    The Societas

    The Societas
    The Society

“Money talks, and the Society listens.”

    About:
    T
he Societas is a freelance organization, best described as a thieves guild. The reality is something more complicated, as the Societas deals with a wide variety of criminal activity. Many question the reasoning behind allowing such a guild to exist publicly; however, political scholars and the majority of residents within Terminus see its existence as a response to the up-tick in criminal activity around the time of the five-hundred and first Nocte Nils.

Those who join the Societas are met with mixed feelings. To the public, they are a tolerated evil and not fully trusted. To those who share the same line of work, but refused to join the Societas, they are considered sell-outs or cowards. Societas members are seen as being concerned about their own skin more then pride, reputation, or the job.

Not all jobs are accepted by the Societas. As an organization, it has to look out for the well-being of itself and its members. Per negotiations with the Terminus government, the Societas cannot officially take jobs which have the sole purpose to intentionally cause permanent bodily harm, or death.

By taking jobs with the Societas, members do not need to worry about accumulating a bounty for most of their work. This has primarily been worked out because the Societas's skills can be bought for almost any price.

    Function

    T
he Societas is organized, more comparable to a business, with the head members each being in charge of specific criminal areas. They control which missions are available to their members, officially sanctioning most jobs, thereby defining what the scope of crimes the guild will take on. Not all illicit jobs are taken by the guild, however, as they have to work within the confines of particular laws. As such, assassination work is not accepted; and neither are jobs which require permanent, or long-term, bodily harm.

Though the guild cannot accept these missions, it does realize that its members are individuals with their own initiative. Should members of the Societas take unofficial missions, members are cautioned that they will receive no support or direct aid from the guild.

Specialized items and technology have diverse applications in the lives of the citizens of Terminus. However, the skill and material to make more complex or interesting inventions is not something readily available to all. When in need of technical items, the Societas is willing to fill that need for those who can pay -- no questions asked.

The Engineering branch of the Societas can provide mundane items such as communication devices as well as more complex products such as cybernetic enhancements. Valuing utility and diversity, the Engineering branch is more than happy to help build new inventions from blueprints or design innovative technologies.

With the state of affairs in the world of Araevis, safety is a commodity that citizens prize more dearly than ever. With the threat of terror and the safety of entire cities to tend to, however, the Conexus cannot always be relied upon to deal with matters that may seem trivial to them.

Those who feel as though trouble might be drawn to them can call upon the Security and Collections branch of the Societas for help. Whether they need a bodyguard to escort them from one location to another, extra security for an event, or perhaps someone to monitor an individual who is expecting trouble, money speaks and the Societas listens.

    Ranking
    R
anks within the Societas hierarchy are kept to a minimum. While each branch head is allowed to make as many ranks within their own branch as they deem necessary to divide up work, the Societas itself only recognizes three ranks: Members, Staff, and Officers.

The lowest ranking are the members, those who have simply joined the Societas and have not yet proved themselves to be placed in positions of trust. Members have access to the basic guild item, but are not allowed to learn the guild's techniques.

Staff are those individuals who have proven themselves crucial, or helpful, to the organization's achievements. These are people of skill, usually in one or more areas, and are promoted within each branch by an officer. Staff get access to the basic guild item, as well as teaches them how to use the first guild technique.

Finally, officers. Officers are the highest rank one can achieve within the Society. Officers have authority over their branches resources, staff, and members. These individuals are typically selected for their leadership capabilities, as well as their skill and dedication to the organization. Each branch may have as many officers as they deem necessary, but only one officer is in charge of each branch. This officer is referred to by many names, varying from branch to branch, but their function remains unchanged: lead the branch, oversee that each job is completed successfully, and keep as many bad things from rolling downhill as possible. Officers have access to both guild items, and all guild techniques.
