While I’ve always known of it, my first real experience with it were the new Chris Pine movies. From there, I moved onto the newer Star Trek shows starting with Discovery. Strange New Worlds was the one that really grabbed me. Prodigy and Lower Decks are both great fun as well. So I decided I wanted to check out some Star Trek games.

Out of the many I found, I decided to go with Star Trek: Resurgence. The style of the game is more of a movie with some choices and gameplay elements interspersed throughout. It is a story game first and foremost with gameplay segments being merely serviceable. With a focus on characters and plot, Star Trek: Resurgence is pretty close to putting you into control of a Star Trek episode.

Find it on Steam.

Into the Darkness.

Star Trek: Resurgence takes place during The Next Generation era, the one with Picard and Riker. It is after the Dominion War. If you don’t know what any of those are, the game doesn’t really tell you. You should have previous knowledge of Star Trek to really get all of the references and stuff, but the story of the game stands up well by itself.

First officer material. Maybe.

It takes place on an entirely new ship. No, not the Resurgence. The ship you’re on is the Resolute. Your perspective shifts between controlling the new First Officer, Jara Rydek, and one of the petty officer engineers, Carter Diaz. Both points of view get to experience different parts of the story. As Jara, you’re making decisions about the ship and how to do things. As Carter, you do a lot more technical and field work and getting into more trouble.

Time for a space trek.

Both characters are fun and interesting. They interact with different characters on board the ship as well. Jara is mainly talking with other bridge crew and high-ranking officers. Perhaps one thing the game does worse than the regular shows is having the bridge crew be more selfish and desiring for promotion. It makes for interesting choices as picking one person’s ideas over the other will affect their affection towards you. Though perhaps it can be argued that the show takes place on the best of the best in Starfleet. The Resolute is just one of many ships.

Carter has more fun interactions. He has a best friend, Nili Edsilar, he has a demanding vulcan boss, Chovak, and overall, being not on the bridge gives him a more relaxed, informal attitude.

Getting involved in a delicate situation.

The story of the game feels like a Star Trek plot. Perhaps more of a movie plot where big things are happening, but still Star Trek. You get to meet new alien species in the middle of a conflict and try to get a peaceful resolution. There will be strange alien artifacts, characters to try and befriend, and lots of choices to be made. Will you stick to Starfleet principles even though they make things harder or take an easier way that’ll solve problems quicker but with a cost? The game won’t push you in any one direction, so it’ll be up to you how Starfleet you want to be.

A meeting with Spock.

There are gameplay segments They are varied but mostly simple. They consist of some quicktime action scenes, some shooting gallery events, scanning things with the tricorder, or stealth. They come at regular intervals to break up the talking parts. While not too engaging, I do appreciate them to change up the pacing and put you more into the Starfleet vibe. Just working on shuttles and opening panels. That’s the stuff. They do provide a story mode in case you prefer not to worry about actually succeeding during the gameplay segments.

I don’t usually play these kinds of choice games because making choices stress me out. Star Trek: Resurgence is a fun adventure that makes me feel like a part of Starfleet. Not everyone may like your choices, but you got to make them anyway or the bad guys are going to win.

Ad astra per aspera.

Find it on Steam.

I am a relatively new fan to the Star Trek galaxy.
