With a wonderful artstyle, you must traverse a grey world in this platformer. But as you go, the world becomes filled out full of color and life. The story of the game is told without words. I’m not even sure what the main character is named, but I’ll just call her Gris. With a great soundtrack, wonderful visuals, and a story about moving past the grey world, Gris is a great experience that many can appreciate.

Find it on Steam.

Gris is a platformer but it’s not a difficult one. There is no dying, no enemies, no restarting. The overall vibe is calm and somber with lots of introspection. The design of the game is great, though. It doesn’t rely on just the atmosphere and style for everything.

The platforming challenges presented in the game are fun and varied. There is nothing that needs that much precision. Things that look like pits really aren’t with the main penalty being a walk back to the start of the jump. And the game does make sure you understand mechanics before allowing you to proceed by forcing you past certain obstacles. Gris does pick up new skills along the way adding to how she interacts with the world.

Sometimes, though, it can be hard to see where Gris is. There can be overlay effects that obscure her. And the game really likes to pull the camera back to show you more of the world leaving her tiny. And some things that look like you can stand on them really aren’t. It would be a bigger problem in precision platformers, but this isn’t that type of game, so it’s not that bad.

Though you’ll return to the same area at the end of each section, the game is mostly linear. You can look around, though, and I encourage it. You’ll find some secret collectibles and just enjoy the wondrous nature of the world.

Remnants of civilization.

You need to piece together the story of Gris yourself since there are no words. The cutscenes do a great job, though. Getting collectibles will give you more pieces, and even the achievements provide information on what’s happening. It is a heartfelt and touching story.

Something blossoming.

Gris is an atmospheric and gorgeous experience. The deeper you get into the game, the more the world grows and changes to something beautiful. Full of imaginative segments and fun platforming puzzles, the gameplay is solid as well. The game is short but makes the most of its time.

Don’t be a square.

Find it on Steam.

Gris, which I believe means grey in Spanish, is a short but impactful game.
