Neo Queen Serenity, I mean, Shira the Rabbit of the Moon, has started acting strange, as has all the other inhabitants of the Moonlit Kingdom. Now you (and your friends) set out to figure out what is going on.

Okay, for a clearer explanation of the game, Rabbit and Steel is a boss-focused game. You fly around on the screen attacking the enemy while trying to dodge their attacks, and the patterns can get really complex. It is fast-paced and action heavy. Each run is different as you get a random assortment of items to power you up each time. Make it to the end and try to figure out what has befallen the Moonlit Kingdom. And do it all as a cute bunny fighting against other cut citizens of the Kingdom.

Find it on Steam.

Bunlock your potential.

I want to start out talking about Rabbit and Steel’s artstyle and presentation. The game is just cute and adorable overall. From the smaller characters that float around on screen to the various expressions in the portraits, the game sort of puts you at ease. And then it punches you in the face with some ridiculous enemy attack patterns.

In the game, each run starts fresh. There is no lingering power. The run consists of an opening stage, 3 out of 5 random stages each with a boss at the end, and the final boss area. The stages are usually tutorials teaching you about the skills the boss has, though even then, there are some variations in attack patterns so each run has some difference. To help you, there is a shop that sells skill upgrades, and you’ll find a random assortment of equipment in each stage that can really change your playstyle. The randomness is what gives this game a lot of replayability.

Start off simple.

To start each run, you select one of many different rabbit classes to go through the game with. Each of them has a different playstyle and different items you may want to focus on. You start out with five different rabbits, but you can unlock more as you play the game. Try them all out as each one is fun in their own ways. And each run, you get a whole new set of gear to play around with. Just be careful. I have both accidentally made some overpowered builds and some really bad builds. Accidentally because I often don’t fully consider my choices before choosing.

Different upgrades each time.

This is a game that can be pretty challenging. There are four difficulty modes going from Cute to Normal to Hard to Lunar. While you can react to things well enough on normal, starting from Hard, you’ll probably need to memorize the bosses enough to start positioning yourself for attacks before they happen. And you’ll definitely need to do that for Lunar. The attacks get more and more complex and ridiculous, but they are satisfying to avoid. All while making sure you keep up your damage since if you take too long, the bosses will start throwing out unavoidable attacks. Outside of the final boss and taking too long, all attacks can be avoided by proper moving around, but your rabbits all have an invulnerability skill they can use to help.

Now if you just want to see and beat all the bosses, you can probably do that in a few hours. Playing on Cute helps if you want. Mastering and higher difficulties however will take a lot of skill and practice. Also, there are lots to unlock in the game! Aside from more rabbits to try out, there are cosmetic trinkets that just look cool. Also, you can unlock new equipment that will be thrown into the random pool of possibilities. More stuff, more wild builds you may be able to complete.

Get ready to dodge!

The game also has no practice mode. You can choose which area to visit first, but that still means getting through the opening stage and the first stage if you want to learn about a certain boss.

The music in the game is great as well. It really fits the vibe and some tunes are cheery and fun. The frog area is particularly cheerful and fun.

Multiplayer Mayhem!

Now I mentioned you can have friends here, up to three other players for a total of four. Note that you can only progress the story in singleplayer, but the game’s selling point is playing in multiplayer! You can either browse through online lobbies or make your own. You can also have multiple people all playing on the local machine as well.

In multiplayer, every boss pattern is modified to accommodate multiple players. The feel of the game changes as many attacks now depend on where other players are. It becomes a complicated dance between two to four players as you must figure out where to safely stand while avoiding the bosses other attacks.

Follow all instructions!

The game also has free DLC that adds 3 new stages with a challenging boss, a new final boss, and 4 new rabbits! The combinations and runs are endless! The game also supports modding, so you can try your hand at making boss attacks.

Rabbit and Steel is about skillfully challenging yourself in single player and trying to coordinate between multiple players when you have friends or strangers. The game may be cute, but the attacks are fierce. But the bosses are cute as well, so it’s okay getting beaten by them. Just come back and try again.

Find it on Steam.

Touhou style with Final Fantasy XIV style combat.
