Much like Myst, it’s you in a strange place where you have to learn how to get around and figure stuff out all without any help and really strange clues.

This is the original Riven. There is no updated rerelease, which is a shame. According to Steam, this doesn’t work on Windows XP. It works fine on Windows 10, though, at least for me.

So find it on Steam. Also, all screenshots here are from the official Steam store page since this game was incompatible with the program I use to screen capture.

Not looking good for you

The story picks up from where the previous game left off as well as resolve the hinted plot points from there. This time, you are sent to Riven specifically on a mission, and you get captured almost immediately. Off to a great start!

As you can see from the screen above, there are actual people around! Riven doesn’t feel as lonely as Myst despite you almost having no interactions because you know people are there, they are just avoiding you since you’re a strange outsider. Oh, they also don’t speak English, so no communicating, and you’ll have to decipher a bit of their language to get some clues.

Got to figure out what this is for

Riven is pretty much a bigger, better Myst in most ways. It’s a real shame they haven’t decided to remake Riven, because that would be amazing. As is, the game is still fantastic. It’s mainly about you trying to figure out how to get around the islands of Riven and figuring out what the machinery around are.

The world is meant to be lived in and things are there for a purpose, not just for a puzzle. So try to think of things in how they are actually used and fit into the world. Of course, there are some actual puzzles, too, but those also make sense within the story. Treat going to Riven like going to an actual world to figure out how things are put together.

A village?

Being that this is an old game, it still works on fixed images. There are no free roam or free look, which really made me miss some things at times. Also, I hope you’re not hard to hearing, since some information is given as sound, and there are no subtitles. Also, I hope you like to read cursive, since all of the notes in the game are handwritten that way.

I was also far too deep into the game before I realized you can press escape to skip animations. You will want to do that since you’ll be seeing a lot of doors opening and trams riding as you explore the island and re-explore the island trying to find things you missed.

It’s quite a ride

Riven is a harder game than Myst, that’s for sure. I had to turn to the guide a few times as there are some puzzles that require you to get clues from across the entire world. Oh, and you don’t even know they’re clues. And you also need to learn that they’re clues to other clues before you can solve your problem. It’s great! This is an amazing world to go exploring in.

It could really do with a remake, like realRiven. I do hear there is a fan group doing one, but they’ve been working for a while, and I don’t know the status.

At least this isn’t like the original CD version. Yes, young ones, CD’s are how we got content back in the day, like 3 steps before streaming. CD’s could not fit the entire game, so the game came in multiple CD’s and when you went between parts of Riven, you needed to change CD’s. I’m so glad I didn’t play that version since you need to go between the different places of Riven a lot, especially if you have no idea where to go next.

Be wary

Go find Riven on Steam. It is still visually amazing in a fantastic world. Solving puzzles here means figuring out how the various machines in the world works and how they’re connected together, along with a bit of hunting around for tiny levers because you can’t turn in the direction you want to.

Well, as the title says, this is Riven: The Sequel to MYST.
