I know there is an Uru game that is part of the series. I do have Uru, but I tried to fun it and it plays a bit off for me, so I don’t think I’ll be trying to get through it. Uru and Myst V form their own story separate from Myst 1 through 4, though. I played Myst V not having any idea what happened in Uru, and it was fine, so let’s go!

Find it on Steam.

It’s all over!

Myst V: End of Ages, feels pretty different from the previous games. For one, it’s entirely in a 3d world rather than pre-rendered images, so graphically, it’s a few steps down from the previous games since it’s running that 2005 graphics. This game also gives you full free roam, though, so that’s pretty cool, though you can use the class mouse only controls, too.

Another big difference is that there are no live action characters anymore! The people you do meet are all 3D models. They try to give them the same range of motion and facial expression as real people, but it just feels off. The game sort of feels like someone making their own thing using parts of the Myst lore. It is quite different from Mysts 1 through 4, though it is closer to Uru.

Graphics!

If you think the reason for turning to 3d models is that you can move around in 3d, it’s not even that. Whenever you interact with a character, the camera pretty much forces a perspective, so they could have stuck with real people.

The game does have a lot of callbacks to the previous Myst games, though, including pretty much a recap of what’s happened in them. It’s fine to have. So on to the new ages and puzzles.

There is someone afoot.

This game is centered around the mechanics of a tablet. You need to figure out how to use it. Once you do, though, you’ll find quite a lot of puzzles revolve around using the tablet to manipulate things. It does make all of the ages feel like you’re doing the same things, though the ages themselves are really visually distinct and looks amazing.

This game, perhaps, has my favorite age in terms of appearance. That age has quite fun puzzles, too. All of the ages in the game look decent and are interesting to get through, however, the ages feel smaller and shorter here compared to other games. They just don’t feel as involved since most things are based on properly using the tablet.

A way to other ages

Still, getting around is fun, and each age is self-contained, so if you get stuck on one, you can go around to work on others. The puzzles do feel easier, but each age is interesting to get through. The tone of the game feels different from previous Myst games, though. One of the reason is the constant interruption by some guy talking to you as you go around the ages. It does start feeling old fast, even if he is giving some hints.

How curious

While this is called Myst V, it really does follow a different plot thread from the previous games. You will come across familiar characters, but in a way that’s far different from before, both in terms of presentation and their personality. The game also adds a lot to the story that was probably introduced in Uru, so overall, it feels like a different narrative. Whether you want that out of Myst or not is up to you. It is just different in terms of visuals and narrative from the previous games.

The ages looks great and are mostly fun to get through. They are also among the smaller ages and have easier puzzles, though. There are still some obtuse things to figure out and machinery to get working, so that’s fun.

It’s a long way down

As the last of the Myst games, I would want something else. This feels too different from the previous games with lots of new stuff going on. It’s not bad, though, and has some cool ideas and ages. They just feel a bit short and simple (though not necessarily easy). It just depends on how much different you want compared to previous Myst games.
