There are old, floating ruins all over the place and a mysterious voice guiding you on what to do. You must get around and find ancient relics in this parkour adventure across several a few different areas. Downward is a first person parkour game with a lot of exploration and collecting.

Find it on Steam.

It’s all out there

Being a first person parkour game, there will be a lot of platforming and hopping around. Those tend not to be easy in first person, but how about here? This game controls rather well. You will pretty much grab and climb onto most narrow platforms, so you don’t need to be that precise. The parkour is also simple and easy, meaning you can more focus on the path you want to take. There is no timing of button presses, just hold down the “parkour” button and your character will climb, wall run, activate special jump points and more. There are a few more involved mechanics, but it still isn’t too hard.

This makes for a fun time getting around the world, and the world is quite fun. It is sort of open world. There are large areas for you to run around and explore. Just going through what the main game wants and you won’t even see half of the world. You are encouraged to explore to find all of the collectibles around.

A mysterious friend(?)

The world of full of floating ruins, so falls might cost you a lot of time or you might even perish if you fall too far. To prevent frustration, you have the ability to place a “mark”. It acts as a checkpoint and you can teleport back to it when you want with the press of a button. Note that this is a manual action. If you die, you will still go all the way back to the last save point you used, so be fast on that teleport button finger. You can also just use it for convenience exploring by jumping back after reaching an area or so.

There is also a mechanic that allows you to change the properties of the world. It mainly opens up new places to explore within the same area while also looking pretty cool.

The planets align

So there is a cost to death in this game. You collect sky shards that can be used to buy upgrades, and you lose some of them when you die. Falling isn’t the only means of death, though. There are also enemies around. Though the combat in this game is pretty neat. You don’t have any attacks. What you must do is dodge until you get the opportunity to take out the enemy’s power source. It’s pretty basic, though as the enemies have simple actions.

An ancient guardian

The lighting in the game works against it. I didn’t mess around with the video settings too much, and the default setting has really bright bloom. Important information in the world is often drowned out by the light such as glowing points up in the sky that just blends right in. I needed to squint to see some of the stuff.

While the story part of the game isn’t too bad and is full of fun places to play around in, the game also has challenge stages.

You must go… upward

In the challenge stages, you need to pull off moves that you never needed to in the main game. Stuff they only allude to in the hints on loading screens. Then you need to do it perfectly if you want to get a gold rank. If you want know how much you’ve mastered the game, challenge mode is the way to go.

The game is fun and there is lots to see and jump around in. The simplified actions really make getting around feel good while still having enough mechanical depth to make getting around interesting. The mark system means any area won’t be too frustrating as you can try stuff again if you make a mistake.

Find Downward on Steam.

Then there’s whatever’s going on in here.

Uh oh

Welcome to a strange and lonely world where there doesn’t seem to be any people other than you.
