Simon Hale

In Public

The Liar
In his day-to-day interactions Simon attempts to come off as friendly, affable, and utterly forgettable. To anybody with whom he isn’t familiar he’ll stick to small talk. If it breaks tension and distracts any given person from focusing on any part of him, he’ll tell or make up something just humorous enough to elicit a chuckle. From his point of view a little impression that’s easily forgotten is sometimes better than the distinct lack of one.
At Work

The Hoodlum
What matters more to Simon is his work, which changes from time to time. Sometimes “work” means hunting down somebody that an international agency or two is willing to pay for. Other times it means he’s found something of interest to him, which will either ultimately satisfy his greed or his personal sense of self-worth. For this reason he doesn’t involve himself with anything supernatural.

All that deals with shinigami and hollows does not interest him. During those rare moments in which he runs into a hollow he’ll favor flight far more often than fight, especially if a shinigami is nearby that can take care of the problem for him. While he knows that he is what many refer to as “Quincy” he has no concept of pride for that name.

On the other hand he is aware that his arrows destroy souls entirely – though he can hardly conceive of it – which is one reason why he’ll refrain from killing people with his arrows if he can. That said, he is not above murder if he finds that somebody has slighted him in some way or if they appear to him to be “disposable” (the definition of which changes and evolves on a case-by-case basis).
In Truth

The Man
Behind all of the facades that Simon has put up is a boy escaping from the shadow of a ghost. For years he allowed somebody else’s morals to dictate his actions. As a child it was easy but over time the dissonance grew until he was acting against his own values. Still, he accrued indispensable skills and obsessive tendencies over those years.

In every situation, Simon remains studious of his surroundings. Successful or not, he tries to read most people with whom he interacts – an effort whose intensity varies depending on the situation. Contingency upon contingency is built which has lead to a compulsive need to bring a number of tools along should he be at work. Another tendency he could not drop was the need to keep his identity a secret, leading to the creation of numerous aliases. Any time that his face is exposed he will try to keep whatever secrets he can.

The Outfit

Simon stands at just under five feet and ten inches. While physically fit his body is better-suited for quick, agile movement rather than heavy lifting. Simon sports a head of blond hair which he keeps short and combed to the left, and dull green eyes.

In terms of clothing Simon keeps two separate sets for two different occasions. When out and about in public he keeps himself in denim jeans, a shirt with varying designs or colors a jacket of some kind that varies with the weather, though he usually favors a black sports jacket featuring the German flag on the lapel.

However, when he finds himself at “work” he chooses his clothing with more purpose. What he likes to call his “work duds” consist of: a pair of black combat boots, gray tactical combat pants complimented by a black utility belt, a gray undershirt and a red hooded jacket accompanied by a black riot mask and a pair of thick silver goggles.

The Story

At the age of 6 Simon Hale was adopted by Hugo Baasch, a former operative of the KSK. There are few events prior to that point in his life of which he has any recollection. Under Hugo’s care he not only found a home more consistent than the four orphanages he had been living in up to that point, but a mentor and teacher in the art of hunting. Much of what Simon was first taught was simple tracking and preparedness. When he was old enough Hugo started training him in the use of weapons, including bows, crossbows and select firearms. All of Hugo’s experience was funneled into Simon’s daily life until he turned sixteen.

At the age of sixteen Simon was made to follow Hugo into the field for a number of reasons. Sometimes Hugo would have pinned down an international terrorist of some kind, or a human trafficking operation. Few things fell below Hugo’s moral radar which he did his very best to pass onto Simon. Learning to react in a tactical situation, as well as anticipate actions, read body language – hardly a day passed in which Hugo wasn’t teaching his adopted son how to become the same soldier he was.

Over the course of ten years Simon had been taught everything that Hugo knew, which included their heritage. Perhaps due to Hugo’s own militant nature all that he taught the young man about what it meant to be a Quincy was that they could create arrows out of thin air, that they could perceive monsters that nobody else could, and that their arrows not only ended lives but destroyed souls entirely.

Ever since being taken into the field Simon had started to disagree with Hugo’s methods. Whether utilizing a bow, a gun or a knife the former agent would never take a life. On the point of killing versus sparing the two became increasingly disparate until three years ago, at which time Simon first committed murder in direct defiance of Hugo’s command. It was during that same incident that Hugo was maimed beyond recovery. Since that day Simon has done as he pleases with all that was left to him but without the restriction or guidance of a stubborn old soldier.
