(I need to look into re-creating the process that would auto-create feedback threads)
Well, faex.
...
It's really good to see both of you writing again. I didn't realize how much I missed these characters. It's stunning to see how much both of them have changed from the earliest chapters, Ignis most of all. I've likely read the bulk of both of their stories, but I was following Ignis from day 1 since I was responsible for grading early on, and I continued following just because I always enjoyed the writing.
I don't think I really picked up on Deni's story before the first PMs, but I've kept an eye on him ever since.
Here we get to see Deni at one of his lowest points, after breaking something inviolate and striving to make it right. The uncertainty and guilt put him in a unique light we're not usually able to see. In the past, whenever Deni recognized a flaw in himself, he seemed to laugh it off or embrace it, yet here, he sees it for the ugly thing it is.
Ignis veering back and forth between rage and depression is all too real. Seeing her turn to substance abuse is tragic, and seeing how it hurts her friend and familiar is painful. Amicus plays a vital role in the story despite having no words to speak, loyal beyond a fault. I like that we get to see the impression of how much Amicus currently hates Deni for what he did, as well as his annoyance at Ignis herself, repeatedly poking and ripping her feathers when she won't pay attention.
The collab is full of intense emotion and imagery, every scene dense with desperation. Their feelings are complex and conflicting. I appreciate that both of them are trying everything they can think of, with some success to offset the stunning failure. It's especially shocking to see how violent Ignis can get. The coldest line of the whole thing: "Maybe I should use you and make him watch." Flipping the script on Linus was as frightening as it was satisfying.
However, Deni putting an end to the problem with three bullets is the perfect punctuation to that scene.
I sincerely hope this is the beginning of something new, too. Given the conversations in Discord, I had my fears that this was a permanent farewell to Ignis to make way for a new character. While that may still end up being the case, I am hoping to see how much Deni is willing to do and sacrifice to get her back.
Fantastic collab to break the dry spell. You're both phenomenal writers.
