Since the Captains and the geography of Soul Society came close in the voting for backstory elements (last I checked anyway =o ), I decided to work on them simultaneously, and it ended up with the former Captains guide edging out the latter for first release.

So, anyway, to keep you guys posted of updates to this thread, I'll be listing them here in the first entry:

(1.3.06)

*Ohara Aya, Zanpaku added
*Fyourin Shorin, started

Special thanks to Ouchy for helping out with the next couple of Zanpaku!

1st Division Captain and Gotei 13 Commander
Ro-Hanken

Early History

Having originally been from peasant roots, the previous Commander of the Gotei 13 took preserved his status of having only a single name when he enrolled into the Shinigami Academy. Not being especially talented in many of the basic skill sets required for a full-fledged Shinigami, Ro-Hanken barely managed to join the Gotei 13 through a manpower shortage in the 6th Division. Here in the 6th Division, Ro-Hanken would spend decade after decade simply following orders and providing the most basic of grunt work in the 5th Squad, the Division's most active supply unit. His time to shine ultimately came during his unit's assignment to supplement two other squads in their assignment to bring down a trio of notorious C-Rank Hollows. During the skirmish with one of the three targets, the enemy flared up to reveal its true status as a B+ rank Hollow and wiped out one of the 6th Division units single-handedly. The 6th Division Vice-Captain was severely injured by the Hollow's new powers and was unable to lead the counterattack. Acting on pure initiatve, Ro-Hanken quickly rallied the scattering Shinigami forces and organized them into a ragtag, yet effective, force. When the battle finally ended, Ro-Hanken had gained and revealed his Zanpakutou's powerful Shikai and fame for saving his comrades and defeating a powerful enemy. For his actions, Ro-Hanken was immediately named to be the Vice-Captain of the 9th Division, who had seen its Captain taken by illness.

Zanpaku

Shiden's Shikai, activated with "Hirameku!", increases its versatility by tweaking the sword's properties slightly as well as making Shiden's sheath a viable weapon. In its first release, anytime Shiden's blade crashes into an object, be it another sword or a plain surface, a blinding purple flash, intended to create an opening in a guard, fills the opponent's view for the instant of the strike. Additionally, the sheath, now hardened enough to use as a bludgeoning weapon, becomes specially ribbed inside with a pattern that creates a disorienting shriek, also intended to indirectly damage a target's guard, when Shiden is sheathed swiftly.

Shiden's Bankai, called "Kuukanshikishichou" grants Ro-Hanken the temporary ability to warp his opponent(s') depth-perception and sense of balance, in all regards. The result is an incredibly frustrating duel on Ro-Hanken's opponent's part in that, for the duration of the Bankai, Ro-Hanken is virtually unhittable.

2nd Division Captain
"Zan" Liufei

Early History

Hailing from a fairly well-off section of Southern Seireitei, Zan Liufei was sent to Soul Society when she was only a child of ten. Her adopted family, a group of independent farmers, was therefore amazed when they watched the young Liufei exhibited a penchant for explosive spiritual energy. This talent was transferred to her work in the field as it allowed her small frame to easily wield farming implements many times larger than what was appropriate for women her size. Soon, word spread from her home in Southern Rukongai and reached the Shinigami Academy where, then headmaster, Mitori Yanagawa, recognized the youth's raw power. Offerred admission exemption by Mitori himself, Liufei's family immediately pushed her to take up the offer to try for a position within the Gotei 13. Even though the subsequent years in the Academy proved to be hard for Liufei, who had limited education, being sent to Soul Society as a ten year old, she eventually graduated to the 11th Division, where her incredible strength was put to use with a commission to be the Division's 6th Seat. Her exploits and overwhelming ability to use heavy weaponry skillfully as well as her penchant for missing out on staff meetings in the 11th earned her a double-meaning nickname that consisted of the kanji "zan," but was pronounced phonetically as "cutter." Needless to say, Liufei much preferred to be called "Zan".

Zanpaku

"Zan" Liufei's name may have a meaning to the action of cutting, but her Zanpaku, Okitsuchi, is much more reflective of her talent with heavy weaponry. With a cry of "Horikaeru!" the familiar curved blade of Okitsuchi straightens out and remanifests as a much larger, thicker, heavier, and deadlier tetsubo. This heavy Japanese studded club is inladen with the ability, when submerged into any ground surface, to forcibly restructure the elements in it to create anything from poor terrain and spikes to tunnels and walls. In essence, any surface Liufei is standing upon becomes subject to possible manipulation and reconfiguration, hence the Zanpaku's namesake.

Okitsuchi's Bankai, "Ikijigoku" was revealed only one time over the course of Liufei's short Captainship of the 2nd, and therefore not much can be said of its properties. However, when it was seen used in her final battle against the Maskless Hollow White Corona, it was reported that the creature and the Captain had both been enclosed in a gigantic earthen dome impregnable from the outside. After the duel, the Hollow had broken out of the dome, and was observed to have suffered numerous terrible abrasions and burns over much of its body before its rapid regenerative healing kicked into effect.

3rd Division Captain
Ishimasuka Zennosuke

Early History

The house of Ishimasuka was one of the most prosperous in Seireitei before the outbreak of the Great Hollow War and was in a position to become one of Soul Society's noble families before the end of the century. The last generation of this proud clan was led by the extremely amicable Ishimasuka Zennosuke, the son of the last legally recognized head of the family before it was set to ascend into nobility. Since the family was preparing to head into its new social status with Zennosuke at the lead, they invested a vast amount of their coffers into grooming him into an impressive leader. As such, Zennosuke's talents in hand-to-hand and armed combat, as well as with Kidou were all well above the levels of a senior student by the time he enrolled in the Shinigami Academy. Since he had received advance instruction at the Ishimasuka estate, Zennosuke was prompted by the headmaster, Mitori Yanagawa, to take the placement tests in order to forego the years that would be spent reiterating lessons he already took. The results of the test were so incredible that Mitori himself was dumbfounded when Ishimasuka had been found to have taken and passed the Academy's final exams nearly a year before enrolling and had taken Mitori's request to register for a Captain's qualifier test. Two tries later, the scion of the Ishimasuka family, and the final result of its massive expenditures to bill their new status as nobles had paid off: Bankai at last, becoming the youngest recorded Shinigami under the Mitori administration to achieve Bankai.

Zanpaku

Ishimasuka's Zanpaku was honed to achieve Shikai even before he enrolled in the old Academy for general education. The blade's name, Gomuhen, is a dead giveaway to the Zanpaku's elastic properties when its Shikai is activated. While the blade can not stretch any farther than a normal blade, Gomuhen's main property in its first release is its ability to bounce back any impact made on its blade, but not impacts created by the blade. In short, if someone were to strike Ishimasuka and he were to block with Gomuhen's Shikai active, the offensive weapon would bounce back just as if it were striking a rubber cord. On the other hand, if one is struck with Gomuhen, the impact is as hard and solid as if it were coming from a normal blade.

Gomuhen's Bankai, "Hinseki", is slightly less indicative of the weapon's abilities this time around. In this form, any opponent within eyeshot of Ishimasuka also becomes elastic when they receive a blow. That is to say, when anyone is struck by Gomuhen while its Bankai is active, they would receive it as if they were elastic in composition, increasing the magnitude of the impact by such a factor that it makes Zennosuke's strength seem manyfold higher than it actually it is. Naturally, Gomuhen's defensive elasticity is also preserved, making Kidou or indirect attacks a must when confronting this strange blade.

4th Division Captain
Inoue Taka

Early History

Interestingly enough, one of the most recognizable Captains in the old Gotei 13 was one sheet of paper away from becoming an officer in the Kidou Brigade for the rest of her life. Inoue's roots in Soul Society were spent being the scheming daughter of a prestigious instructor at the Shinigami Academy. Having been famous for her ability to throw and host elaborate parties, many of Seireitei's elders, most noticably the Central 46, immediately tied that ability to a lack of academic skills. Therefore, it surprised many people when she was formally evaluated for her aptitude for pre-Shinigami training skills and received perfect marks in the Kidou section of her application. At first, the lack of any martial training singled young Taka out to become a new recruit for the Kidou Brigade, but in a mix-up at the Academy's registrar, her file was somehow put into the processing inbox for incoming students for supplementary spearmanship and self-defense classes. In another turn of luck, the classes were supervised by the 10th Division Captain Fuyutsuki Nimuro who immediately spotted Taka secretly channeling Kidou into her swordwork (which, of course, was against the rules) to gain top marks in that class as well. Amused at the girl's ability to dupe the other instructors, Captain Fuyutsuki took Taka under his wing and the two became the best of friends and possibly even more as she eventually became his Vice-Captain and, later on, Captain Inoue of the 4th Division.

Zanpaku

The Zanpaku that Inoue used during her term of office in the 4th Division was known as Ankou, the "angler." In its fully sealed form, Ankou was so small that Inoue used it with lacquered chopsticks to tie back her hair in many unique fashions, hence the ease in recognizing her in public. Being true to a nature of duality, the sealed Ankou could also be used as an emergency medical tool for minor operations. However, when actually needed in practical combat situations, a shout of "Tsutsukeru!" and the once tiny chopstick-sized blade grew to a full-length double-bladed spear. In this form, the weapon could detach each of its blades from the spear's shaft with a length of metal chain and attack from a range of up to fifty feet. Needless to say, the presence of Inoue and Ankou in mass-combat situations made her a more battle-hardened 4th Division Captain than her predecessors.

Ankou's Bankai, "Kongou," has its name taken from the legendary weapon of Indra, and much like it, Ankou's form becomes as hard as the purest Bloodstone, capable of crushing through the hardiest of defenses. Again, true to Indra's legend, the wielder of this particular weapon is also able to shrug off the mightiest of blows with little to no effect for the duration of the Zanpaku's Bankai. According to historical records, it seemed as if Inoue's Connection stat with Ankou determined how many hits she could take before the Bankai began to draw directly from her personal spiritual pressure. The nature of her death, brought on by Karappo Kotsu, the alias of the Maskless Hollow Emptybones, supports this report since the 4th Division outpost in Rukongai where she was last working in was obliterated in what seemed to be a single blast.

Todoko Kenji, a.k.a. Todoko Kenpachi

Early History

The early history of Todoko Kenji, the last Shinigami of the Gotei 13 to hold the vaunted title of "Kenpachi," began when he arrived in Soul Society after passing away from a rare blood infection in a makeshift urban orphange. The wound from which the infection stemmed was preserved during Kenji's transition to existence in Soul Society, much to the interest of several local doctors in Rukongai. Over the next few years, the wound, which had closed into a horrible scar, began to run down the length of Kenji's right arm, growing noticeably year after year. Baffled by both the the growth of his injury as well as the pangs of numbness in the affected arm, the young Kenji eventually made a journey on foot from the forests of the Western Rukongai frontier to Inner Rukongai just outside of the massive fortified Shinigami city of Seireitei. Here, the unique qualities of his case prompted the attention of the Shinigami Captain Inoue Taka, who after a few tests and observations concluded that the lingering ailment that had stricken the young man's arm was caused by some exotic Hollow ability. Furthermore, the ultimate diagnosis of Kenji's disorder called for full-time spiritual energy therapy, but in order for that to take place the boy would have to become a Shinigami. What followed upon Kenji's graduation from the Academy is currently classified information regarding a series of experimental operations that were conducted jointly by Captains Inoue Taka of the 4th and Oowanryuu Suikuske of the 12th. The scar's growth had been stopped, but new ones had been etched onto Kenji's Hakusui and Saketsu. While the true effects of the operation were known only to Inoue and Oowanryuu, as well as Ro-Hanken himself, the other Shinigami in the Gotei 13 were immediately transfixed at the sheer amount of spiritual pressure that Todoko exuded, even while sleeping. More disturbing though was the boy's seemingly overnight transition from being normal, upstanding young man to being a quiet and secluded recluse for most of his term as a seated officer of, then Vice-Captain, and eventually Captain of the 5th Division in the Gotei 13. The man's personality could be described perfectly as bipolar, child-like when at peace, and an unreasonable demon when provoked; all the while preserving a monstrous spiritual pressure that some maintained wasn't truly that of a Shinigami anymore...

Zanpaku
Hands down, Todoko Kenpachi's Zanpaku was the single deadliest and possibly most complex of all those wielded in the Gotei 13. The name of the weapon, Hakamori, literally means gravedigger and many an opponent of Kenpachi have been sent to their graves thanks to this deadly weapon. The Shikai form alone of this weapon is a reason that many have fallen to this Kenpachi for when activated, the Zanpaku can draw out the color of an opponent and temporarily steal one of their soul-based abilities. While limited only to Shikai, moderate Hollow attacks, and basic Quincy/ryoka abilities, this gave Kenpachi an insight into how the enemy functioned and what sort of strategy they brought to the fight. So even if the enemy survived taking a bit of their own medicine, Kenpachi would already be inside their heads thinking of how to counter their plans of attack.

If that wasn't fearsome enough, Kenpachi's Bankai was so drastic that it nearly required a sealing measure from Ro-Hanken in order to be properly used. Without his Commander's permission, Kenpachi was unable to perform the single most terrifying ability the last of the old Gotei 13 had under their command: Anouyo Hakamori. In this Bankai, a special spiritual link is established between Kenpachi and a target of choice. Here, spiritual power is shared exclusively between the two opponents, regardless of the state of their surroundings. Over time, the Bankai's target has his/her/its power siphoned off each time he/she/it takes a hit to join Kenpachi's own reserves resulting in a timed match in which Kenpachi could gradually become stronger while the target became weaker. As such, the amount of spiritual power that Anouyo Hakamari can dig up with each landing stroke is so great that it could cause shock in lesser disciplined opponents, which in turn would be fatal. However, the main flaws in this Bankai can be seen in that its effectiveness is halved against multiple opponents since if everyone is linked, everyone shares the same amount of initial power. Though again, only the wielder of Hakamori gains access to the "gravedigger" ability and while the Bankai was active, he need not fear overloading his Zanpaku with too much energy than it could handle and warp the blade in the process. Going up against Kenpachi and Anouyo Hakamori alone was suicidal, plain and simple and the infamy of his Zanpaku's ability forced many of the Gotei 13's enemies to plan their attacks around the possibility of this dreaded Shinigami's appearance.

6th Division Captain
Maehara Goro

Early History

An established member of the noble house of Maehara, Goro was one of the last children of his family's generation to enter the Shinigami Academy. A distant relative of the famed Maehara Junko, Goro was initially favored above his cousin to ascend to prominence within the Keigun, the old administrative police and internal affairs organization. However, lacking the necessary atheletic ability to become a covert field agent, the family instead had him develop his other latent abilities at the Maehara estate's famed bujutsu dojo in N. Rukongai. Here, Goro gradually rose to the rank of adjutant master at the school's spear and polearm proficiency classes. Unbeknownst to him over the course of his life, Goro would come to teach the likes of future heroes such as Todoko Kenji, Inoue Taka, Seiji Yasuo, and even the future Gotei 13 Commander Shinkou Masaru. For his extraordinary abilities with both a katana and a naginata, it was decided by both Commander Ro-Hanken and future 13th Division Captain Mitori Yanagawa to specially bypass Maehara's induction into the Gotei 13 and immediately give him a Captainship examination.

Zanpaku

Maehara Goro's Zanpaku was unique in that it was fully sealed without a handguard. While it would eventually serve its purpose as an omen of an untimely death, the lack of a handguard made Goro's weapon of choice much more concealable. Coupled with some minor traning in Keigun techniques, one could never tell if Goro was armed or not at first glance. Moroihada, literally "brittle skin," was one of the last Zanpaku anyone would want to face especially when unsealed. For if any impact were to be made on or caused by the blade, Moroihada would send tens upon hundreds of razor-sharp shards into the air. Naturally, the blade being attuned to Goro's spiritual pressure would not affect him, but for his opponent on the other end, it was quite painful to endure multiple shards tearing at your arms and face and anywhere else they landed (hence the other meaning of Moroihada being the brittle skin of Goro's opponent).

In Bankai, Hifuishoku Moroihada extends its laceration-inducing abilities to much larger scale. Upon activation of the technique, the area surrounding Goro (approximately fifty feet; can be scaled with more or less spiritual pressure) is flash-coated with serrated blades and the air is filled with a fine powder similar to grounded glass. Needless to say, every surface in this area has become dangerous to touch, from clothes, to walls, to even one's own Zanpaku, the opponent's sense of touch has been turned against him/her/it. Add in the fact that the shiny powder can one, eventually grate away at one's skin (earning the reference to skin transplant in the name) and two, eat away at one's lungs through inhalation, and any target of this Bankai arrives in a most desparate situation.

7th Division Captain
Fyourin Marisen

Early History

Fyourin Marisen, without a doubt, was one of the more troublesome students that was ever produced in the Shinigami Academy during Mitori Yanagawa's administration of the institution. Known for instigating multiple altercations in Rukongai (and winning them all) as well as for his wild social life, it was a real wonder how he still managed to hold together his education at the Academy without the aid of any innate talents. In fact, the only subject that young Fyourin was able to pass without a "meets core standards" evaluation was basic geography of Soul Society. His lackluster performance in the Academy didn't earn him any advance promotion from his schooling days into an officer's seat in any Division of the Gotei 13. However, what was considered his biggest vice early in his life became one of his greater assets as he wandered through four of the 13 Divisions. Eventually, for his adventurous exploits (in reality, cases of reckless abandon that worked into his favor) Fyourin rose through the ranks of the 3rd Division and became its new Vice-Captain within a decade. Little did anyone know however, many years later, that it would be Fyourin's rampant drinking issue that would prompt him to challenge the last Captian of the 7th Division in one of the most famous duels ever witnessed in Seireitei, and win!

8th Division Captain
Ohara Aya

Early History

Unlike Inoue Taka, whose competency with Kidou warranted only an immediate transfer into the Kidou brigade, Ohara Aya had been personally scouted by the organization to become a high-level officer without the need for prior experience. Such were the skills of the so-called "Silent Crash." Hailing from some obscure corner of Northern Rukongai, it is unknown whether or not Ohara had been given instruction prior her election to a diplomatic delegation to Seireitei and her subsequent encounter with the famed 10th Division Captain Fuyutsuki Nimuro. Regardless of the true origin of her powers, Ohara, who then had only the fragile frame of a young teenager, was able to approach the Captain undetected to offer him some of North Rukongai's trademark heated black tea. Being surprised at Ohara's ability to sneak past multiple sentries was startling enough; but to steal away to a Captain's side without so much as a creak across a nightingale floor? Captain Fuyutsuki realized that the child's ability was monstrous and immediately had the Onmitsu Kidou keep tabs on her while he arranged for a meeting with Gotei 13 Commander Ro-Hanken, and the top scientist in Seireitei, 12th Division Captain Suikuske Oowanryuu. The decision to settle her into specialized classes created jointly by the Kidou Brigade and Gotei 13 was then made, but when Captain Fuyutsuki arrived at Ohara's mountain home to deliver the message personally he found that the young girl was a mute. And so started the legend of the "Silent Crash," a woman who could not utter the basic incantations for any sort of Kidou, but could somehow still invoke them to, or even past, their previously recorded potentials.

Zanpaku

While it is true that Ohara's main method of attack and defense came from her massive wealth of knowledge concerning Kidou, the 8th Division Captain did not neglect her studies and relationship with her personal Zanpakutou. After a few months of continuous excercise to improve her Connection with her weapon, Kijodokusetsu was finally awakened. Among the last order of Captains, it was one of the few Zanpakutou that featured multiple abilities while in Shikai. The first of which was a simple manifestation of several swords that, when channeled through with sufficient reiatsu, could actually perform a variety of tasks such as creating a whirlwind of blades to act as a barrier/cover to fire Kidou or even to take the fight to an opponent with long-range swordplay. However, as Ohara's assignments within the Kidoushuu had her facing more and more powerful opponents, the "Silent Crash" moved swiftly to prepare a second Shikai ability that called upon a jade avatar that would follow its mistress in combat. The silhouette repeated Ohara's movements by default, but could also move to deflect or defend oncoming attacks, virtually giving Ohara eyes on the back of her head. This Shikai was even further made use of to attack trailing enemies with suppressed reiatsu using homing Kidou; this is part of the reason why numerous attempts on her life made by various Vizards and Arrancar have ended in failure time and again.

Kijoudokusetsu's Bankai has not been revealed to the keepers of the Record of the Central 46, but was rumored to have been shown to fellow Captains in the Gotei 13. Statements made by each of the witnesses claim that Aya mounted on a huge lizard with a fearsome tongue that could cut even the most dense of Bloodstone and whose scales could reflect the most potent of Menos Cero beams.
