His father tried not to favor one brother over the other, but it was obvious to Lukas that Josef was the favorite. It always seemed to be Josef that went with his father on trips, while Lukas was stuck at the house with his mother. Over time, he grew estranged with his sibling, which caused an even deeper rift between him and his father.
After his mother passed away, when he was around the age of 16, Lukas decided there was nothing left for him at home. Waiting for his family to go on another one of their trips, he silently left the house one day. Moving to a city, he found a job and ditched the surname Erdeschalk, favoring Schulze instead.
While it was a lot to handle all of sudden, Lukas took the change in stride, knowing he couldn’t complain since he had done it to himself. He lived in the city for the next couple years, working different jobs to help pay his rent. Lukas hadn’t given much thought to the rest of his family, nor did he really care; he had distanced himself from them emotionally, and didn’t care to reopen that can of worms.
One day, when he was 19, he was visited by a figure he vaguely remembered from childhood. After an introduction revealed the visitor to be one of his father’s old friends, Lukas chose to hear him out. The news he received was intriguing; the man told him that his father and Josef had passed away, but wouldn’t elaborate as to how this had happened.
Intrigued, upset, and slightly concerned, Lukas decided it was time to return to his old home and see what he could find out. Discovering only the tattered remnants of his house, Lukas was left stunned and full of questions. He decided it was time to track down some of his extended family, even if it was only out of false hope for some reconciliation.
