Disney Dreamlight Valley Update

I am specifically doing this update because of a change in Disney Dreamlight Valley’s monetization plans. When I first wrote my review, (read here), I mentioned that I paid for early access, but the game was eventually going to be a free-to-play game with paid currency that allows players to buy cosmetics.

They are changing that plan now, though, to keeping the purchase price. The game will still have paid for cosmetics as well, but they also have paid for quest bundles. The change of plans does come as a shock for some people since originally, the paid premium items were supposed to fund the game after it went free to play. However, the game now has both paid cosmetic items and a purchase price.

Just a normal beach.

I don’t mind it so much, assuming things continue on as is. People will be understandably upset at the change of plans. I think it’ll be alright. I usually find paid for games more wholesome than free-to-play games.

The game is actually gives out a decent amount of moonstones, the premium currency, just by playing. They have this new Dreamsnaps weekly event. For some effort, it is possible to earn a minimal of 350 moonstones a week. Dreamsnaps is basically decorating and dressing challenges where you submit your photo to the game’s server. Other players then vote on how much they like it. The more votes you get, the more moonstones you earn with the minimum amount being 300. Top moonstone reward is 12,000, but that is literally the number one highest rated photo of the week. The extra 50 comes from voting on other people’s submissions.

For example, I tend to spend 10 to 20 minutes per week doing it and usually earn 900 moonstones. One quest bundle costs 4000 moonstones currently, so you could get that in one month or so of doing the event that gives moonstones. Assuming none of the numbers change, then the moonstone currency can be seen as an extra that players can either pay for or wait for. Cosmetic items tend to cost 1300 for simple stuff to 3000 for more complicated stuff.

For information, it costs $4.49 USD for 1200 moonstones with higher amounts being more cost efficient.

Also, a paid expansion is coming. This was always in the plans, so that’s not a surprise. Even with the expansion, the base game is still going to be getting at least 5 new characters until 2024. As for more after that? I don’t know. We shall just have to see.

Anyway, just thought I would update you all on the change in Disney Dreamlight Valley’s monetization plans. It will now stay a regular paid for game with paid for in-game currency that can also be earned other ways.
