Hue

Hue, a puzzle platformer all about colors. You play as Hue going out to find your mother. Along the way, discover the mysteries of her research into color and why you can manipulate color to your advantage.

Special thanks to swaswj for making this possible.

In this game, you collect the ability to change the background color. Whatever objects matches the color no longer exist and cannot be interacted with. You need to change colors to get through obstacles and solve puzzles.

Find it on Steam.

The joy of color.

The world starts out lifeless and colorless. It’s a drab place. But as you go through the game, you collect the essence of color. Doing that will bring your world to life. It gives a nice sense of progression as you go through the game. Coming back to old areas, you get to enjoy it in all new stereocolors!

The game is about Hue going through rooms of puzzles to collect more color essences. In turn, he’ll use those essences to help him find him mother. It’s a sweet little story. Along the way, he’ll find research notes from a couple of people all about the color essences.

Wooden boxes grow up to be stone blocks.

The game has a good progression of difficulty. You get introduced to new colors and new mechanics at a steady pace. Each area has a theme to the puzzles. In the end, you have up to eight colors to choose from. It does get a bit tricky, but not that much. Time slows down when you’re in the color menu, allowing you time to think. There’s not going to be a huge need for speed color changing.

The color wheel. Accurate.

The puzzle rooms are alright, but I really like the design of the connecting world outside. The world has character and atmosphere. The puzzle rooms are merely there as challenges. If the game could somehow make the puzzle rooms feel more integrated into the world, that would be better. Like, why are there random balloons in old dungeons?

Walking around the outside world feels great, especially as you slowly bring color back to the world.

Wooden boxes are the ultimate laser stoppers.

Hue is a decent little puzzle game. It’s not too long. It’s sweet. On the challenge scale, I found it pretty simple.
