Music at Your Job

..or for that matter anywhere as long as music can be heard by you and someone else.

At my job, my fellow co-workers -mainly men- tend to listen to certain types of music. Let me put it this way, "country music". Not that I despise that style of music but it's just to give you an idea. When I opt to play the music I listen to, I don't play a specific genre. It's random. You just never know people's tastes in music. It so happens that the first time I tried it out, I actually was surprised at how one of them (28 years old) liked it. In fact, it turned out that his tastes and mine were super compatible. I was very excited to have a music-sharing partner.

I tried the same with another co-worker (age 29-30). I could tell from his face that he did not like it at all. He started making fun of the "girly" type of music that was playing. I clearly got the message. He's just a guy who grew up in farm and was closed from the evolution that was happening in the city.

I did the same with another guy who just so happens to be related to the farm animal. At first things were good. Then he started to skip the songs. He would settle for one or two and then would go to the skipping process. For example, he would like Queen's We Will Rock You, but would skip Bohemian Rhapsody .

Now let me backtrack. When these men play their music during the entire shift, I would not complain about their musical preferences. If they ask me whether I liked it, I would reply that I didn't. "Does it annoy you?" "No. I simply ignore it or don't pay attention to it." I don't walk over and start changing their songs just because I don't like it.

It's god damn annoying and I just needed to vent this out... *mumbles*

Surprisingly enough, that guy who dared to not like Bohemian Rhapsody decided to quit for no apparent reason. He was late and instead of giving a reason as to why; he simply told my boss that he had something important to do and if he wanted to lay him off to do so. o_0

How many people these days tell their boss's that they don't want to work anymore? Do they just not value having a job or is this a backlash for not praising a much beloved song?

I vote for small amount of karma and seasoned with a little of ignorance. Unless you hate your job and think you have a better chance elsewhere, you shouldn't think yourself so invaluable that your job will keep you if you hand them an ultimatum like that. Remember: it's a job hungry market out there and your employers have a lot to choose from.
