The venture was short lived.

Freedom can at times be nonexistent. One moment, you have it within your grasp and the next its whisked away.

Despite his unparalleled speed, he was not able to get to the Eleventh Division's headquarters as soon as he would have liked. The Seventh's holding cells were on the easternmost part of Seireitei while the Blood Templars' home was located on the westernmost sect. To add to that, the wounds that he had sustained from having been bludgeoned more than once in prison had still shown no signs of clearing up.

Coming to a halt just past the end of the Eight Division, Ryoujin tried to catch his breath, which was oddly surprising. He had felt fine just a few moments ago, but now that he was on the outside, it seemed as if his energy was being sapped from some sort of source. Perhaps being confined within those bloodstone walls had a more drastic effect on him than he would have ever imagined.

It was right then when he realized how ignorant he truly was. For someone who held the ranking of an upper tier officer, news surrounding his act of “treason” had surely spread by now. Search warrants would probably take up to a few days to carry out, but shinigami were already on the prowl, hunting for him, and there was no way of guaranteeing that they would not recognize him as the savage that had been responsible for that massacre a few days ago.

As a result, his first task before even considering investigating the Eleventh’s grounds was to find some sort of disguise in order to cloak himself. Finding something suitable was going to be hard given the fact that his pink hair made him stick out like a sore thumb in a crowd.

After pushing through some foliage and finding one of Seiretei’s more finer markets, he noticed that many of the civilians were out mingling with one another and enjoying the festivity and security that the White Walls had to offer - so much so that it was absolutely the best opportunity for him to blend in somewhat without attracting much unnecessary attention.

Scanning the many patrons in the various shops and open booths and bars, he tried to find a vulnerable target, namely one who was wearing a cloak of some sort so that he could cover his face.

With what seemed like forever, he finally found said individual, who seemed to have placed his wide-brim hat and cloak on the table that he was seated in. The man appeared to be very haggard in appearance, his face flustered up from heavy drinking. His tongue lolled out of his mouth in a very stupid fashion.

Would you look at that? This couldn't have been any better, Ryoujin thought, satisfied as he slowly but surely advanced towards the vulnerable man. The others around him seem to pay neither of them any mind.

With a very innocent and chesire grin spread across his face, Ryoujin finally reached the table, noticing that the man was staring off into space. Waving his hands in front of the drunkard to see if the poor soul was truly out of it, he was relieved to see that that was indeed the case.

Quickly grabbing the hat and the matching cloak, he put both items on before striding away.

Unfortunately, things weren't exactly going to be that simple.

“Oi lad, where’re you headed with that?” the drunkard piped up, opening his startled grey eyes as his words came out in a very slurred and indistinguishable manner.

Freezing in his tracks, Ryoujin seemed to curse under his breath, as he debated whether or not to book it right there or stay while risking being caught.

“Hrmm, not one for the words...?” the haggard-looking man began, standing up on wobbly feet as he ushered Ryoujin to take a seat, “You look like a weary traveler. Here...why don’t you sit down and rest a while.”

Ryoujin shook his head in response. “No - I’m fine, really. I’ve got somewhere to be, and I’m already running late.”

“Nonsense!” came the retort, “I’m sure wherever you need to be can wait.”

“Ehh, no I really should get going. Thanks for the offer though, maybe next time-” he began, his auburn eyes narrowing in on a particular photo pinned by a nearby billboard. Sure enough, it was a wanted list filled with convicts of all sorts on the loose, and while the others seemed to look worn and faded, the picture that he was concentrated on stood out. It was a snapshot of none other than himself with his thumbs up and one of his trademark grins.

Funny how he had underestimated how quickly the Gotei could respond.

As he prepared to leave, the old man began making a ruckus of the whole thing, attracting unnecessary attention until eventually all eyes were set on the flustered elder.

They should have an age limit for drinking. Good god Oji-san, Ryoujin thought, feigning ignorance and pretending like he hadn’t even conversed with the man a few moments ago. As he seemed to gain some distance from the drunkard, the old man with surprisingly quick reflexes grabbed his wrist with a vice-like grip. Struggling to break free, Ryoujin finally managed to do so but not without allowing his hat and cloak to slip free.

Freezing up, the Blood Templar watched as heads turned towards the bounty list. As murmurs started to spread through the increasing crowd, a high-pitched voice finally shouted, "Aye! That's him - that there Ryoujin, one of Tsubaki's. The one that killed his own comrades in broad daylight!"

"Pft, you serious? I don't believe it," someone else argued.

"Look for yourself!"

"Crap.. it is him!"

Before long, footsteps could be heard nearby. In what sounded like a stampede, dozens of armed shinigami appeared with a flash step, their blades menacingly poised at him. In very brief moments, the old man that had been responsible for blowing his cover had vanished altogether.

“Well shit, so much for a disguise, huh?” he said, his hands on the pommel of his own zanpakutou prepared to draw it at any moment in order to fend himself. Before he could so much as unsheathe Kazeoni though, a heavy spiritual pressure seemed to weigh down on him, and what was more it held the exact same traces of the one that he had detected back when he was imprisoned - the very same one that had taken the liberty to free him.

In the distance, he could hear someone clapping. Behind it all, there was a boisterous laugh and a smug grin. As if rehearsed many times prior, the armed soliders parted to create a straight pathway of sorts for their commander. Ryoujin took note of the all-too familiar ebony mop of hair that rested on his head and the slate-colored eyes that shook many eneies with fear and apprehension.

Kyoshiro...

If he wasn't already annoyed by the man standing across from him, the very one that had been responsible for detaining him in the first place, then he was more than irked to be in this guy's presence... again.

"My, my, look who we have here," the guard captain taunted, "You've done well to escape our confinement. I don't think I've ever had anyone get past our top line security."

"Cut the bullshit," Ryoujin began, resulting in more katanas being poised at him. One soldier even had the gall to attempt to charge him right here and there. Sending a gut wrenching kick towards him, the man was launched back, sending others sprawling in his course. Before anyone could attempt to overwhelm the Blood Templar, a motion of Kyoshiro's hand halted their advance.

"Everyone leave," the leader commanded, his boisterious voice thundering across the market. In what seemed like seconds, the innocent denizens parted and ran, leaving no one but Kyoshiro, his reinforcements, and Ryoujin.

Opening his mouth, Ryoujin began to speak again; however, no words seem to come forth. In fact, he found that the color around him faded. Everything seemed to freeze up, and time stilled. A rip seemed to open up behind Kyoshiro, it's form stretching outwards and encompassing everything. Soon enough, a pitch-dark abyss swallowed both he and Kyoshiro, removing them from the fabric of reality. The other soldiers vanished as well as the White Walls of Seireitei. The scenery suddenly shifted in favor of a more cryptic setting, a graveyard filled with the tombstones of fallen shinigami whose identities were lost with the passage of time. As his gaze combed through his new surroundings, searching for something that was not there, the ebony-haired man laughed.

"We're not in the real world if that's what you're wondering," Kyoshiro explained. "You like it? Most people would have been terrified to even be able to stand right at this point. I guess that's something else that I should commend you for - you lot were after all the 'Fearless' Duelists, am I right?"

Noticing the glare on the Blood Templar's auburn orbs, the prison guard smirked. "Oh yeah, I almost forgot. You can't talk.

"I think I like it better this way. Wouldn't you agree? I should just have you like this when they finally bring you to the Central and decide on your execution date."

As the man stepped towards him, the pink-haired youth allowed his own spiritual pressure to keep Kyoshiro at bay. With some struggling, he was finally able to pose the burning question that had been lingering in his mind.

"Why'd you save me only to go through the trouble of trying to capture me again? For someone who acts all high and mighty, it doesn’t make much of any sense,” he said, having already confirmed that it was indeed the guard assigned to him that had liberated him. Although everything added up from Kyoshiro’s sudden disappearance from his nightly vigil to the ‘intruder’ being able to get past all the security measures and locks with what seemed like relative ease, there was still the one thing that he needed to clarify. What purpose had his liberation served except to make things more complicated on Kyoshiro’s part?

"Good question, but this isn't the right place to have it answered. If you're seeking answers, meet me at the stadium that once held the Grand Tournament of Seireitei back before your time.”

"You say that as if I knew where in the blue hell that is in the first place," Ryoujin countered. Before he could so much as say something else though, an image of the aforementioned grounds seemed to have been imprinted into the forefront of his mind along with the directions needed to reach the deserted stadium. This could only mean one of two things. If Kyoshiro could transport him to this realm at will and even mess with him mentally, then he was dealing with some sort of deranged psychopath, and this was going to be far more complicated than he wanted it to be. If that wasn't it, then he probably wasn't even close to surmizing the surface of his powers, and he could only wonder what other trump cards Kyoshiro had. Nevertheless, no matter how far this man's abilities extended to, his actions were far more confusing than they were before.

"I don't get it. Why would you want to go there? We can settle whatever vendetta you have against me right here."

"You really do have a nutshell for a brain, don't you?" Kyoshiro began, bridging the distance between them in a nanosecond. Before Ryoujin could so much as react, the prison guard reached forward, unsheathing Kazeoni from his scabbard. With one motion, his own zanpakutou impaled him right through, blood gushing forth. Clutching the wound as he staggered back, Ryoujin gasped for breath... only to have his respiration return instantly right after. Furthermore, there was no more evidence of a wound or any blood, and his zanpakutou was back within its scabbard, almost as if nothing had even transpired in that dreadful moment.

"You saw for yourself. I can't hurt you here nor can I keep this illusion going on any longer. If you are wondering why I freed you, it's because I can't dispose of you while others are watching. If you had been an unseated officer, it would have been far easier, but since you're not, I can't just kill you outright in the open.

"If you're dead set on getting answers, then you'll do as I instructed. Go to the stadium alone in a few hours. And bring no one. If you so much as consider doing that, then let's just say your little Academy friend Toshi or maybe even Kyuketsu can wind up getting imprisoned as well."

Pausing as Kyoshiro sensed the sudden rise and fluctuation in Ryoujin's reiatsu output, he continued, "Or we can bring others too. Amaterasu Nana. Manzo Kagetoki. Hayashi Amaya. Zakeriah. You name it."

"How did you-"

"I know more about you then you think. Although I may not have the power to decide on the final verdict, I do have enough influence to at least have some sort of sway on the Courts," Kyoshiro concluded, his power seeming to gradually weaken. "I'll wait for your answer there. For now, I'll let you go."

The hold he had on reality began to slip as the graveyard finally peeled away in favor of the market that they were in to begin with.

The soldiers, not even realizing that they had been frozen in place, clutched their zanpakutous at the ready, waiting for the signal to cut the Blood Templar down. However, no such motion came. A strong pulse of reaitsu weighed down on everyone present instead. Looks of panic and fear filled every one of the men's features as they dropped their swords and placed their hands on their ears in order to drown out whatever was frightening them. In the pandemonium that ensued, a menacing glint appeared in Kyoshiro's eyes, only visible to Ryoujin, who remained unaffected.

Realizing that this was his cue to leave, the pink-haired youth burst into a shunpo while Kyoshiro stalled and feigned as if it was the Blood Templar's own arcane talent that had resulted in the mass disturbance. Instead of looking back, Ryoujin pushed fowards, heading towards the designated location. As he did so, he felt a bead of sweat roll down his forehead. Although he had done a good job at it when he was face-to-face with the man, he was now beginning to realize just why Kyoshiro evoked fear.

"Chikushou," he swore under his breath through gritted teeth.

In no shape or form could he even hope to match Kyoshiro's speed and prowess in the time that he had allotted to him. And he didn't intend on letting anyone know about his situation either - he couldn't afford jeapordizing anyone.

He had to do this alone.
