What's This?!
After some discussion in chat, I thought it would be fun to create a version of the "Choose Your Own" stories. For now, the outcomes of each following turn will be voted on (link at the bottom) by YOU. As the story progresses, the decisions will likely become more influential and complex. There is no specific time-frame in which you need to vote but I will look to see when most of the voting has stopped and move on from there.
Part I
Black and Red
Black and Red
You walk down the hallway of your division, straightening your loose shihakusho, as you approach a set of double-doors at the end of the hall. The office you’re approaching is one that every division has, host to receptionists, office managers and low-level officers. It’s here, in this office, where you and your shinigami comrades come to receive and turn in paperwork, reports and bounties.
It’s been awhile since your last mission - a few months, actually - and since you got that scar. You reach inside the kosode, rubbing your hand across the collarbone and over the hump of your shoulder. You feel the risen skin of scar tissue, a mark left by the last target you brought to justice, on behalf of Soul Society. There’s no pain when you touch it, though, so you think about how lucky you are to have gotten out alive. Sadly, you realize that there were some who weren’t so lucky...some who were gravely injured and some that even died.
Refusing to brood on a distant memory, though, you finally reach the double doors, suppressing the dark thoughts and press them open with a new sense of vigor and accomplishment.
“There you are,” a feminine voice calls out. “We’ve been waiting for you.”
The double-doors open into a bright, organized office. A young lady sits behind a clerk’s desk, looking up at you as she brushes her black hair behind her back. Her other hand is hanging up a phone.
“You,” she says with some playful attitude, “are late.” She reaches down and audibly pulls a filing cabinet drawer out, in order to find something.
“Sor-ry,” you say, rebutting with sarcasm. “I was training...wanted to make sure I was ready for this.”
The girl looks up from the drawer, where her hand is dancing across rows of labels and tabs, and smiles with a simple response, “I know.”
“After all,” you say, looking around, “If I’m late, it makes me seem that much more important.” A childish grin curls up on your lips.
“Right,” she says, brushing off the remark.
She looks back down and grabs a folder triumphantly.
“Aha!”
“Is that it?” you ask, pointing to the folder, eager to get your hands on it.
“Well,” she begins, “it was but...”
She turns in her chair and hops up, moving behind the other side of the counter and pulling another folder. Your anticipation fills the silence.
“...You took so long that we had another one come in. I don’t know why but you’d get to pick, for some reason.”
“Really?” you ask with surprise.
“Really.”
She throws both folders down on the counter before you. The one on the left is black and worn, showing its age, thick and full of yellowed papers. The one on the right is red and sharp, new and seems as if there would be nothing inside, at all.
“So,” she says putting her hands on the table and leaning towards you, “which one is it?”
You look for a moment, letting your eyes move between the two folders. After a few seconds, you extend your hand to grab the folder you’ve chosen.
“That’s easy enough,” you say. “I choose...”
