“Oh, uh,” Mitsu said – eloquent as ever, “...y-yeah. You too.”

It was only when he reached out to grip the other boy’s hand that Mitsu noticed the fact that his uniform sleeves were shredded and blackened at the edges; a brief glance down confirmed that his pants legs were no better off. Ash coated Ataru’s twin scrolls in a fine layer of gray (Mitsu was reminded of the last time he’d visited his inner world), and second- and third-degree burns marred his skin in places. The redhead suspected that his hair was singed as well.

For now, though, all he felt was the slow, subtle drain of reiatsu from Threshold. He didn’t want to think about what would happen when the Bakudou wore off.

“I’m, uhm,” Mitsu continued, blinking himself out of his reverie and taking Vincent’s hand in his own, “Mitsuyo. Mineto Mitsuyo, Third Seat of the First Division. I...don’t think we’ve met before. Or, if we did, I don’t remember because I’m kinda notoriously stupid. Sorry about the, uh,” the redhead shifted uneasily, “...the whole...tackling...thing. I really don’t know why that guy started attacking.” Or decided to go all kamikaze and explode in my damn face. “...I...should be fine, at least until this Bakudou wears off – but are you alright?”

Mitsu carefully didn’t think too hard about the old man (his death). He was starting to hope this was all just a part of Raifuku’s game. This shit just didn’t make any sense, otherwise.

Speaking of...

“...Huh...weird. There...was another guy here...” Mitsu looked around at the burnt trees and blackened ground as he spoke. “....But he’s gone now.”

He was, too. No reiatsu signature, no sign that he’d left, not even a charred corpse (the worst of all the possibilities). At some point the man had simply vanished. Mitsu met Vincent’s gaze again before continuing. “I dunno if you got here before he disappeared, but I was talking about formin’ an anti-asshole alliance with him. I was...um...kind of hoping to avoid any stupid in-fighting over these.” He held up his hand, where the kanji ‘奥’ remained, unhidden and undisguised. “And I guess I was thinking...uh...’the more, the merrier’? Or ‘the more, the less likely to die’, anyway.” He smiled weakly, nervous and unsure.

Mitsu really hoped the former Arcanist was as friendly as he seemed. He could really use a damn friend in this place (the burns scattered across his face and limbs seemed to verify that).

Vincent shook Mitsuyo's hand excitedly, until the officer's comment about his Threshold spell brought a sudden realization to the boy's mind. He'd taken quite the beating himself, and until now, adrenaline and the desire to survive had conveniently allowed him to forget that fact. But with clarity came pain. And lots of it.

"Yeah... kinda wish I had one of those Threshold's on me, too..." The guardian ran a hand across his ribs, wincing as he reached the broken rib. "Yeah, definitely broken... I'll just never run out of things for the Fourth to do, it seems." Luckily, his months spent recovering in the hospital, and endless supply of Michiko's medical books, gave him some insight in what to do. He ripped the single sleeve from his shihakushou and re-purposed it into a bandage. With a small whimper, the boy pushed his cracked rib back into place and wound the strip of cloth tightly around his body. "I guess that'll have to do for now...

"I've spent the last few months in the Fourth, kinda picked up a thing or two. Not chiyudou, but at least basic medical skills." He let out a long, slow breath, placing a hand over his ribs and flooding it with regenerative reiatsu. "What do you say we get ourselves patched up a bit and then find a way out of here?" The young death god didn't much want to spend any longer in the charred remains of the forest than necessary. It just felt bad to linger around such violent, and in the child's opinion, pointless deaths. "I'm all for not in-fighting. Hopefully we can find some more friends. I think we're gonna need them."

“Yeah,” Mitsu sighed, trying not to sound too obviously relieved. “...Just...yeah. I wish I had some sort of fucking clue what was going on around here, but if that’s outta the question I’ll definitely take having someone to watch my back.”

The redhead rocked back on his heels, frowning slightly. With no small amount of reluctance he pushed back one of his sleeves to reveal a mess of burns crawling up and down the length of his arm. “...Ugh. Yeah...that’s going to hurt like shit after a while.” He glanced up at Vincent, expression lightening a bit. “Take your time, Vince—ah, Kreuz-san.” His tongue tripped over the foreign word, and Mitsu cringed. “Sorry I can’t...you know...do anything to help. Hell, my solution’s only temporary.

“The sooner we get out of this, the better.” The boy glanced up at the smoldering treetops. “...And I don’t just mean this fucking forest, either. Actually, here—” Mitsu dug in his kosode pocket, extracting the heavy black ring Raifuku had given him. He pressed it into Vincent’s free hand. “Would you take this for me, please? I shouldn’t be holding on to it – it’s sort of...a...temptation? And I don't wanna risk it, ya know?” He hastened to add, “I don’t think it’s dangerous or anything – I just...I, uh, don’t...want it.” He swallowed. “Or need it. ...I’d just toss the damn thing, but I dunn what would happen if someone else found it.”
