The tiny man paced back and forth within the First Division Library. The same problem had been festering in the back of his mind for several days and despite his intellect he had been unable to derive a solution. The signs of another entire nights anxiety powdered his face as his footsteps were heavy against the bamboo floor. He slung Shidari over his back and made way towards his daily tasks, picking up an energy drink on his route. He cracked the top open and guzzled down the tart tasting beverage as his body quickly became revitalized as well as his attentiveness.
For the next few hours he did the menial tasks of an unseated officer while he quietly thought about the problem at hand. This was one of the many downfalls of the young shinigami. When he came to a question he needed some kind of answer, he could not let an unsolvable question plaque his mind to a fault.
How can I talk with Z and not get caught. I am not constantly monitored but the lag time will eventually catch up with me regardless if I am ahead of the curve. I have to think many months in advance with I want to escape the watchful eye of “Them.” His quizzical thoughts were harshly interrupted when a superior berated him about some late paper work.
“I need the reports on last weeks inventory, where are they Theo?” The small boy’s blood boiled at the unprofessional way he addressed him. He had not given him permission to call him by a name only Shidari was allowed to use. He quelled his anger fumbling through a stack of papers and handing them over to the bulky man with fire red hair. “Here you are Junto-sama, everything is accounted for.” His eyes ripping the man limb from limb in a sequential order. No one save perhaps Sayis and the group who watched Theo would have any inclination of the boy’s repressed anger and manipulative nature but it was there. Clawing in the back of his mind, waiting to escape from the mental cage his logical side had put on it. He had the potential to become an Evil Genius, the kind he heard about in comic books and video games.
With a sudden realization the azure haired child packed his things up and placed all the papers into their proper places. He rushed over to the First Division library where he would spend the rest of the night. Another all nighter in the search for an answer that was necessary for the childs own sanity. He was on the cusp of coming to the realization that video games would be his salvation.
It is one thing to say that Theo was a genius, that was not the case. His intelligence was not that he knew a lot of information but more so his ability to absorb and apply information he learned. The child did not know the first thing about programming let alone how to create a video game but he would soon. Spending countless days in the library was not something unheard of for the knowledge hungry shinigami. For the next week he spent every waking moment he could afford researching and developing means to employ his new found obsession. However, despite everything he learned he was not able to create what he had in mind for his plan. He went to the one place where he knew there would be someone willing to help him with this project, the Ninth Division.
Yawning for what seemed to be an entire minute the young shinigami chugged another beverage advertised to boost ones energy. Weather it did that or not was arguable but he did feel a slight boost to his otherwise disheveled body. He entered the Reception area of the building where lectures were held. He trudged over over to a digital touch screen where a registry of all the lectures being held that day were located. To his delight there were a few on programming He made his way to the first hall where a dozen shinigami sat all wearing the traditional garb save for a few changes or person flairs muddled through out.
Within a few minutes of waiting a blond haired man wearing a white lab coat burst in the room. Immediately he took it off and hung it on a hook that seemingly appeared from nowhere in the wall. He now wore a yellow t-shirt with a white stripe on it, his green cargo shorts rubbed together with every heavy step the man made. A bandanna pulled his uncontrollable hair back as it poked out of every hole it could find. He was an energetic man who was physically probably in his mid twenties.
“Hello hello! welcome to the lecture one basic programming and algorithms. I am eager to teach you all about my research! We are going to have lots of fun! Yea!” The man walked over to a large digital display screen and started writing things down that Theo recognized from his cram session on programming. It was not as exciting as the man had promised but everyone always started with the basics. Theo’s right arm propped his head up for most of the lecture until he drifted off into a hard sleep.
“Hello, anyone in there!” The lecture hall was empty and the only people that remained were Theo and the man who he would come to call Sai. The tired shinigami rubbed the sand from his eyes and let out a stretch before responding to the over energetic man.
“I apologize. I drifted off mid way through the lecture. I knew this stuff already and was hoping to gain some insight on programming a video game but, this did not prove useful.” The man had just poured his heart and soul into the lecture about the automatically generating computer viruses his program created but Theo did not hear any of that, he was asleep, and not amused. However, this did not upset the eager researcher, he was too proud of his work to care the thoughts of some lowly non-seated runt and the word video game grasped his attention. “Video game you say, that’s some heavy stuff man. What kind of game are yah tryin to make, I am sure there is someone here in the Ninth that can help you.” Theo looked at Sai with a bit of doubt as he ascertained the men's intrigue. It was genuine, it was the same thirst of knowledge that the young man had without any of the snarky sarcasm that came with a general Theo response. Theo could not tell him the real reason of why he wanted to create this digital world so he created a believable one. Something that was honest enough to be believable, it was a grand idea much like the tournament.
“Well, inspired by the World Tournament where Shinigami, Quincy, Humans, and Vizards can all test their metal against one another why not have a place where they could do the same thing. A place where they could communicate with each other in a light hearted manner and see past the barriers of race or faction. In my game people would be able to create friendships based upon their actions within the game and not just assume that someone is evil solely on what part of the cycle they come from.” The thought was noble and was sure to move anyone who heard the words issued by the tiny arcanist.
The researcher scratched his head a bit before responding. His lips pursed together as he whistled with exaggeration. “That’s one tall order you got their kid. Something like that would take months to get up and going. I could help yah out but it is gona take more than just you and me, your first problem is figuring out how to stabilize a connection from an Earth connector to our servers. I think I know a few guys who would want in on this. Mind if I tell them?” The people of the Ninth really did enjoy taking up arms with one another to create something of amazing engineering. “Keep it to a very small group, I am Theodoor Holiday unseated member of the First Division. I will meet you in the reception area next week to discuss our plan of action. Please have everyone ready and briefed on what we will be discussing.” Leave it to a First Division member to start delegating the minute the get into a group. Theo could not help it though as he came by it honestly. It was in his blood to take charge and control the flow of things although he had not learned the finesse that many of his First Division members had yet but that would come with age.
“Yea sure kid! Man the guys are gonna eat this up! We are going to be famous!” The man rushed from the hall forgetting his coat in the process. The exhausted Theodoor troddened to his division quarters and collapsed on his bed. He was one step closer to being in two places at once. He would need to keep tabs on his work mates, loose ends did not bode well for a manipulator.
