It was early morning and the young arcanist was just settling into his monotony for the day until his ears caught wind of wrath.
“THEOOODOOR!!!”
The officer’s voice could be heard through the entire complex. Chills went up the young arcanist’s spine when the words had finally reached him in the small office he had come to occupy. Heads from the rooms in the hall poked out curiously to watch Theo walk death row.
The other shinigami whispered indiscriminate comments as the boy’s callous eyes glanced past them on his way to the boss’s office. He was not fool, he knew exactly what this was about but had yet to write a report on his field mission into District Twenty-Three.
“Theodoor Holiday, unseated member of the First Division, reporting in.” A cherry flavored sucker occupied his mouth as the mumbled words were spoken. His eyes strayed from his superior to look in the corner of the room at a spider web.
The old man’s eyes sagged back into his skull, his thick bristled blond beard covered his masculine features, hazel eyes blazed with flakes of gold as his entire demour radiated with rage. Then again he was never a very happy man but this was a first, he was disappointed in Theo.
He tapped his sausage fingers on the desk like the ticking of a clock, “You have really gotten slack in your work and appearance Holiday. Your attitude is poor and your assignment was a failure according to this! What do you have to say for yourself?”
The file slid across the cherrywood desk as the blue-eyed child opened the manilla folder and read its contents. Not one person had received relief on his excursion and the District was still suffering from an unrecognized source of illness.
“I sent you there kid so you could give a bit of relief to the District and locate the source of the infection. You didn’t do shit! If you think you’re ever going to go back out into the Districts again you have another thing coming.”
The spider had caught a fly in its web and began to make its way toward the panicked insect. Every move it made only caused it to exhaust itself more and spread the sticky web over its body.
“Are you even paying attention to me bean sprout!”
The child took the sucker out of his mouth while his brain was hard at work with different possibilities.
“There is no point in helping the people who are already sick. The reports we have about District Twenty-Three already tell us about the mortality rate of those that have contracted the illness. I found it more useful to find the cause of the disease. While unsuccessful I found several matters of interest that I would still like to investigate that could be beneficial to the District. I will need to return at once.”
The weathered man let out a howl in disbelief. He slapped his forehead with one hand and pointed at Theo with the other. “You have some balls on you kid! That’s rich, you want to go back, don’t make me laugh like that, it isn’t good for my heart condition.”
“I am not joking around Sir. It is very important that I be allowed to continue with my relief efforts, would you rather us do nothing, Kato-senpai?”
He slammed his hand on the desk, the old man did not like to be challenged.
“You will go but, if words gets back to me about not a single person being helped while you are out there you can kiss ever leaving the walls of this office again. Do I make myself clear Holiday?”
“Yes, Kato-senpai.”
The short shinigami left the room as he swatted a fly away from his head, he slid the door closed on the way out. His departure was the signal of another individual's arrival that he would pass in the hallway for a brief moment. He gave a double take but no one was there, the man he thought he saw was simply gone. Theodoor continued his journey down the hall and payed no mind to it.
He was a tall man with an athletic build, white cloth covered his mouth and chin, an eye patch with the symbol for the Twelfth, his left eye. His hakama was riddled with belt loops that frayed at the ends along with his kosode. A crimson red eye addressed Kato in a formal manner.
The bear of a man leaned back into his desk chair, it creaked through the room hinting at its age. He pulled a key from thin air as it materialized into his hand, a key he would use to unlock a secret drawer in his desk.
Much like before he threw the manilla folder at his guest, the same noise the paper made against its surface met the assassins ears. “You are not to touch him, harm him, or even be seen. Ever since this little ‘prodigy’ was forced on me I was told I had to keep tabs on him. His ideals are not all there, if you know what I mean.”
The ominous figure before him said nothing, only nodded. His hair was long, braided down the center of his back and then forked like a serpent's tongue. His zanpaktou rested on on his left hip, red and gold wrappings on its hilt. Everything about the man emanated killer and yet, he was being hired only to watch.
“Self proclaimed Shunshin, if you are discovered I will personally make sure that you never work as a field agent again. Secondly, if you harm one hair on that child’s head, I will kill you myself. Do I make myself clear?”
The dark veiled man gave a simple nod before he vanished into thin air. The papers on Kato’s desk ruffled slightly giving hint of the mans leave. He threw his head up and rubbed his temples. “Why do they always give me the trouble makers, I swear, you make one mistake out there and you get desk duty for a century.
