"You're sure about this?" Dai questioned his best friend, a look of disappointment on his face "" although admittedly much less so than it had been before; he had come to terms with the idea of Sho achieving Shikai before he did.
Sho nodded, glancing at the clouds atop of a large hill just beyond the gate separating the Gotei 13 from the common people of Rukongai. "You remember, before? When I told you I was hearing faint whispers? That I believed it was my Zanpakutou calling out to me... trying to tell me its name?"
Dai closed his eyes for a few seconds, dwelling over their past meeting for a few moments before reopening them. "How could I forget?" he replied simply, cupping a hand over his mouth as he yawned, enjoying the day off; a nice relaxing day off.
Sho turned his head to face his friend, holding in the early stages of laughter, How Could I forget? he repeated the statement in his mind, knowing that despite not feeling as strongly about it, Dai was still disappointed he was being overshadowed by the friend he'd always surpassed in combat. "The voices have gotten louder Dai," Sho admitted finally, "Before all I heard was a faint whisper... it was inaudible. That's different now, it's much clearer, but still just out of my reach; I'm close, I can feel it."
"You need more training," Dai assured him, "If it's just beyond your reach, all it will probably take is for you to push yourself to the limit." Sho glanced over at Dai, wise words. This was certainly an odd situation, for Dai to be the source of insight between the two of them, regardless of whether it had been in combat, a test or even in conversation, these moments were rare.
Perhaps this was a sign that Sho wasn't thinking clearly? That was usually the case when Dai was the superior in logic. The answer he had given in itself was also so simple, push yourself to the limit. Why hadn't Sho thought of that? He was so wrapped up in the idea of achieving a greater level of power that he'd not been thinking straight. This was highly unlike him, it worried him, was being a formidable Shinigami in combat nor more important to him than his research? He certainly hoped not. He silently vowed to refocus on his research once he had achieved and gotten the hang of using his Shikai.
"Something wrong Sho?" Dai had noticed it too, the role reversal. Whilst Sho was usually the calm, collected and insightful one between them, the roles had been reversed, Sho had now taken on that particular quality of Dai's; a determination to succeed but the lack of any insight in how to do so.
Sho sat up, staring out over Rukongai, he could barely make out his old district in the distance and he smiled, such fond memories. He contemplated going back there, he hadn't been there for so long, since... since he'd left a few years before joining the academy. After it had all fallen apart... Andrago, he felt no more distaste for him now. It was obvious he'd only been angry at Sho for "˜abandoning' him in a time of need; he considered the young soul's dream of being a Shinigami foolish. No... he'd merely wanted some support.
Dai could also make the district out from there current position, but of course, only the tip of the marvellous and tall building that lay in its centre. It was merely a small dot on the horizon from where they were, but still... it was there, it's presence affected the both of them.
"Remember when we finally reunited Dai? Five years before we entered the academy?" Sho's expression was blank at this point, despite the fact he acknowledge it as a great moment, it was truly lucky.
"I'd been searching for you all that time," Dai admitted, "District fifty-two, I wasn't sure whether you were above or below that... I headed in the wrong direction at first and searched the districts with numbers above mine for quite a while before I finally got wind of a great mechanic and inventor named Sho from a passing traveller... it was a stroke of luck on my part."
"I want to head back there," Sho admitted, "Maybe later... to meet up with old friends. I was so glad when you arrived Dai... so glad. It had been so long, I could only hope that if I stayed still, that you were the type to travel and that we would eventually meet; I regret that I left as quickly as I did though, Andrago was furious... and I don't blame him."
Dai got up and stretched a little, now content on his feet. "Do you still think about Mayu?" he questioned, "Do you think she's out there somewhere? In a district... waiting? Just like you were?"
"I think about her everyday," Sho admitted, "Both for that very same reason and because..." he stopped, joining Dai by getting to his feet and placed a hand next to his Zanpakutou. "Before, it was you who would challenge me to a fight, Dai."
Deciding not to press the issue of Mayu, knowing full well Sho stopped because he didn't wish to think of her, of the girl that he had loved but never seemed to be able to be with. "A fight?" Dai responded, drawing his own Zanpakutou on some sort of reflex, "Why is it that you wish to fight?"
The Unseated Ninth Division Shinigami grinned, shifting his body so that his face met with his best friend's own trademark goofy smile. "What was it that you said earlier? Your sudden stroke of genius? I thoroughly appreciate it, I assure you. If you don't remember, allow me to repeat; I need to push myself to the limit."
Dai raised his Zanpakutou and "" in now some sort of ritualistic fashion "" pointed it directly at his best friend. "My, my Sho... is that a challenge? I can assure you I haven't been slacking off. I underestimated you last time... no, that is a lie; in all truth, I overestimated my own potential. I won't make such a mistake again... I know you've gotten stronger Sho, but let me tell you... I... I've gotten stronger."
"Here and now?" the researcher questioned, pointing his Zanpakutou at his friend in the exact same fashion. It was at this point, he heard the almost complete name of his Zanpakutou once again: Mar... Mart... it was useless, Dai was right. He would need to push himself.
Dai chuckled, "Gladly, old friend, I will help you achieve your Shikai."
