Year#105 in Rukongai
[1048]
Carefully tinkering with a small and intricate device, Sho was yet again thinking of his friends; why did he do it? Was it perhaps because he had little left? He turned and looked at the sleeping Andrago who hadn't visibly aged too much over the course of the one-hundred or so years he had been in Rukongai, but such was natural, in fact he himself had aged in appearance much more than Andrago "" if a few years could be considered do "" although he had done some research and seemed to notice a trend upon reaching prime age that souls were known to stay in such a visible age for up to hundreds of years and possibly even larger spaces of time.
His friends... Dai and Mayu, the two that he had been with on earth, his greatest friend and the girl that he loved. Sure... she hadn't reciprocated his feelings, but he had been hasty and could tell by the looks that she'd sometimes given him that perhaps if he had have not always asked her at the worst imaginable time, that things could have been different.
But that was being optimistic, what he was more concerned with was the well being of his two friends, sometimes he hoped that due not hearing from them for over one-hundred years that they'd escaped with their lives in that accident, but if there was one memory Sho did have it was a quick flash of his life slipping away and in that moment he had looked around to see the two lifeless and maimed bodies of his friends; he he caused that, and it had put a stain on him forever. He wanted to apologise, if such a trivial thing would even do the situation a tiny morsel of good. He knew Rukongai was massive and that people got separated, never to find each other again... he hoped that he and his friends did not fit into that group. It was highly possible that of all things they were travelling even now, searching for each other. He'd considered many possibilities, perhaps they too were staying put in one place for the others to locate them? That thought worried him the most. He would have gone looking but he owed a massive debt to Andrago and Kaver and had very little interest in abandoning them "" at least, not for such a slim chance as finding his friends "" but he'd always considered where his allegiance would be if he was asked to go with his friends or stay with the district he'd grown to love over one-hundred years.
What was left for him? That was the real question that he found himself asking every single day, to be a mechanic? To be... a Shinigami? At that point Sho felt hunger take over him and he grabbed a piece of bread that was in front of him and began to eat it. Those that needed food and water were possible candidates for Shinigami he'd read and he'd toyed with the idea before "" especially considering that Dai and Mayu may also have become Shinigami "" but hadn't give it as much thought as perhaps he should have... was it an option? Surely... but what is the right option? That was what puzzled him.
A knock came at the door and Sho lazily leapt from his chair and walked over to it, not bothering to check who it was, he opened the door and came face to face with an eerily familiar goofy-looking smile.
"Is that you... Sho?" Asked the voice of the in front of the young mechanic, "I was told that a skilled mechanic named Sho lived here... that would be you... right?" His tone of voice was desperate which Sho found odd.
"I am," he replied simply, "Do you want something fixed...? Or, have you another reason for coming here? We have a great selection of books on offer here... not to peddle or anything but"”"
"Sho," the stranger interrupted, "Do you recognise me? You've changed a little... but I can still recognise you; is it working both ways? Who am I, Sho? Who am I?" Their were tears welling up in the man's eyes.
Thinking for a moment, Sho glanced over the man and then it came to him, finally his thoughts were subdued. What he had hoped for and thought for hours over almost every single day was finally in front of him... an old friend, this was Dai; the two had finally reunited. "Is that you Dai?"
Dai nodded and extended his hand and shook Sho's firmly before pulling him closer and the two patted each other on the back as they'd done so many times in high school and then Sho began to cry, but not because he'd been united.
"I'm sorry," Sho muttered, "I'm sorry that... I'm sorry that I was a fool and that I took away the best times of your life. We had so much ahead of us... you, me and... Mayu. I took that away because I was a fool... a fool who didn't get what he wanted and I cost all three of us our lives because of it."
"I'd rather not think about that," Dai replied, finally releasing him and walking into Sho's home and sitting down, surely he was owed a rest after having made the final stretch of his journey non-stop for several days. "Let's just be happy that we're both back together again. Next on the list... Mayu."
"Do you eat?" Sho asked, feeling a glimmer of hope and pointing to the other roll of bread sitting next to his own half-eaten piece. "You know... get hungry? I do... I hear that it's something not many people feel here."
"It's not," Dai agreed, "However... yes, I would like that roll of bread, I in fact "" like you "" do get hungry, and I mean really hungry. So if you don't mind passing me the bread?" Sho complied and tossed it to his old friend. "So... looks like my hopes have come true then... you need to eat and drink? You know the Shinigami academy? What say we leave Rukongai for good and go find better lives there? I know it's sudden but what do you say?"
