Hi?
I'm out of practice with comments n' critique, but I said I'd say SOMETHING so ENJOY THIS HOT MESS
As per usual with your writing, I go into it meaning to 'do you a favor' reading a chapter and offering my thoughts, and then like a half-second later I'm chewing through the content at mothafuckin' mach speed. It's the best compliment I can pay, really, to say that I read your writing like I read best-selling novel writers and my favorite authors. I can be a bit of a nitpicky person when it comes to things like sentence flow, word choice, etc., so any writing that is good enough that I don't stop or stumble over anything -- or, if I do, I'm too enveloped in the story being told to realize it -- is pretty amazing to me. OKAY ENOUGH FANGIRLING NOW
so another thing i love about your work (oops i lied more fangirling now) is how fuckin' good you've gotten at the sheer fuckin' HUMANITY of characters. This time, of course, I'm talking about Sanctum, and the way you paint him. Even though the WAY you told the story of his past was somewhat distant and removed, an introspective flashback more than an in-the-moment retelling, you stuff so much damn character and personality into the story that it doesn't feel as boring as I expect this sort of thing to.
My personal favvie moment would be his sheer bafflement that someone he hated, someone he barely recognized in hindsight, thought there was some friendship, some camaraderie between them. IDK if it was your intention (but I will assume so) but I love the idea of that flawed greyness in characters, even when it started out as something as clear-cut as 'slaves dont want to be slaves anymore, rebel against awful slavers'. I balk pretty hard against people who are evil for the sake of evil (or the sake of being an antagonist to someone's protagonist) or even just assholes for the sake of asshole...ery, so I eat up any character flaws in good characters, or insight into the motivations of 'bad' characters or antagonists, that I can get.
The chapter was, admittedly, a little slow -- like I said before, very detached, almost, very introspective. But that isn't a bad thing, every now and then, and I think it does work well for such a weary soul like Sanctum.
okay that's all i got i'm out of steam now bye
