Canonization Thread

We've said many times that we hope to have the users help build out the world: inhabitants, flora, fauna, geography, culture, etc. As such, things don't need to be approved before you can write them. By all means, be creative and draw out new ideas on the canvas of Araevis.

This thread exists to add some legitimacy to the things you create -- or to request clarification on something that isn't clear. Essentially, you're requesting that we add a Codex entry or update a rule thread, to add something into the established lore in Post Terminus.

Two examples:

In Finny's chapter, Bijou, I like the idea of the Three Jewels, and I plan to feature one of the locations in an upcoming chapter! They should have a codex entry.

Does Araevis have one moon, or several? Is there just one sun? What kind of constellations should we expect?

Note: this is a discussion thread, so feel free to weigh in on someone else's suggestions!

MORE SUNS, MORE MOONS, YES, VERY GOOD.

Also what I know about constellations is literally nothing at all. So I can't help with that.

(well i know zodiac signs...sort of. only because i'm a lazy shit and that's how i pick characters' birthdays)

Thirded. Necessito mas sols y luna. I feel like a visible asteroid belt might be cool, kind of adding a little to the scifi aspect of our fantasy world. Or actually I bet landmarks would be better, like the jewels. And floating rocks! That'd be super rad.

Also, is survival possible in the wastes? I seem to recall someone telling me no and decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to go hang out there.

I listed that as an example question, and I guess I forgot that we never actually added this to the Codex:

Caesar (Cascade), the Sun -

The great light of Caesar has shone in the sky since time immemorial. Araevis orbits it in a three-hundred-sixty-five day cycle, and corresponds to Castus and its respective holidays. Red-orange in coloration, the red sun appears to be in the latter half of its lifespan, Araevis having stabilized its orbit just prior to the sun entering its red giant state. Astronomists cannot predict for sure when the red giant phase will begin, but suspect it remains a few millennium off.

Aestus (Tide), the first Moon -

The largest and closest in orbit of all of Araevis’ moons, the orbits of this large orbiting station determine the tides of the world, holding dear value to the velen for its connotations with Serpens. It orbits Araevis in a twenty-four hour cycle. The navy coloration of the moon is often attributed to its proximity to Araevis, its visage often occupying a great deal of the night sky, causing a reflection of the world’s oceans to cast its - assumedly normal - lavender composition to be dyed its most commonly seen color.

Lacunar (Ceiling), the second Moon -

The smallest and second-closest in orbit of Araevis’ moons, this station rotates far slower than the other two moons. Keeping a stable orbit approximating one-hundred-thirty days, Lacunar appears to hold no apparent sway over the climate or weather of Araevis, perhaps due to interference from Aestus. When seen, it often holds a greenish hue, prompting astrologists to debate if the moon is possibly constructed of vitatium lateris. Whatever the case, the enlil often celebrate its bi-yearly rotations as a sort of ‘new year’, prompting festivals and holidays in the name of Aquila.

Tus (Comet), the third Moon -

The further in orbit of Araevis’ moons, Tus is most often seen as a white-hot streak in the sky, orbiting at half the speed of Caesar with an estimated seven-hundred-thirty day cycle. The moon is often subject to debate as its actual status, and only its stable orbit saves it from being listed as a glorified comet caught in Araevis’ inevitable pull. The laicar often use it as a symbol of resilience, associating it with Bellator himself.

Spera (Hope), the demi-Moon -

Though not considered to be a true moon, Spera maintains a consistent orbit around Araevis, cycling around the planet roughly once per seven days. Odd in shape, and smaller even than Tus, Spera is a dark form rarely visible against the backdrop of the stars. On rare occasions, not quite three years apart, it passes in front of Aestus, and only then can its shape be clearly seen: to many, it seems to take the shape of a pair of wings. The rarity of its sightings has caused many to associate it with Occultus, and most view it as a portent of good fortune, particularly when it is passing through favored constellations.

Also, is survival possible in the wastes? I seem to recall someone telling me no and decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to go hang out there.

Possible, yes. There are no thriving communities or cities in the wastes, though, because there really isn't enough to support large groups.

Some creatures have adapted to it, though, and a persistent (and lucky) individual could survive out there for a time.

Major cities across the different continents would be nice. IIRC the capitols are in place, but not much else. I've made one city and plan on making at least one or two others as part of story.

Araevis is pretty big, and having a few key cities agreed on with general information would be helpful.

Feel free to contribute a few.

What is the government of Excelsus like? A fiefdom, lordship kind of thing?

Edit: I laughed out loud in my office. I thought that was funny too, Raph. Thanks for answering because I have like a million silly questions I'm still coming up with.

You mean the Kingdom? The one with a King? What government does the Kingdom have?

(it's a monarchy this is sarcastic not meant to be mean just thought it was funny)

You might have just used it as an example, but I think it would be cool to officially add in the 3 shopping centers of Terminus that I mentioned. Just a thought.

There are multiple ways a kingdom can be governed. UK has a standing parliament to run the country with elected officials. Feudal kingdoms had the kings/queens court of counts, dukes, lords, ect. to help the monarch govern or to rule their lands whilst paying tribute as a vassal to the monarch. Then you have smaller kingdoms where everything is directly run by the current monarch. It is something that is worth noting if you want to talk about the political geography of an area.

I personally would like to see some magitek and grand inventions. Like super-sky-carriers or mobile castles maybe even some power armour or small mechs. I want to see just how far the rabbit hole goes.

Feudal kingdoms also typically functioned under serfdom, which Araevis has long since moved beyond in civilization. The UK's parliament is still headed by the reigning sovereign, but a standing parliament requires a cohesion of government you don't typically see in the recovery stages of a post-apocalyptic world.

For all intents and purposes, both kingdoms of Secare function as your standard monarchy. One sovereign holds all authoritative right and veto, capable of distilling authority to vassals as he sees fit. Regardless of the model of monarchy used, a single sovereign still holds the final power. This is true in all the examples you've given, and it's true of the kingdoms of Excelsus and Prendere.

This is not to say there is no existing municipal government amongst townships, or perhaps even a stateship, but the buck stops at the sovereign.

Kingdom of the Netherlands is a constitutional monarchy.

I.E. Our King has no say whatsoever in anything that needs to be decided upon. He's a political figure, and nothing more.

(Also, I'm not trying to counter an argument here or anything, since there isn't any argument to counter. Just thought I'd give my additive cent on the different kinds of monarchies - as really, monarchies are typically either Absolute, or Constitutional with the former following the examples you guys used, and the latter uses the example I used.)

That's plenty, as far as answers go. That'll give me a lot of leeway with writing Excelsus with technical Lordships that translate into regional governors or municipalities.

I am really liking the idea of the community canonization thread. Keep posting noteworthy things people! :D

For consideration in getting into the Terminus Area codex.

The Three Jewels
The Three Jewels are the three largest shopping areas inside of Terminus. They are: the Emerald Jewel, the largest of the three. The Ruby Jewel, the one that handles the most imported goods from the Elatus Spirit Docs. And the Diamond Jewel, the most expensive shopping area around.

All stores and land space in the Three Jewels are owned by the city. The stores are rented out to any people that want it. If that person no longer wants the store, dies or is unable to pay rent, the land returns to the city.

Emerald Jewel
The largest shopping center located near the center of Terminus. It contains the great variety of stores.

The stores are arranged into two giant structures, both semi-circle in design. Each building goes up two levels, to hold even more stores. An outdoor walkway allows people to get around the second floor. The feel of the area is simple with plain buildings and little in the way of decoration. Everything is made out of grey stone. A bit of color is provided by murals painted along the walls and isolated trees that stay green all year around.

The center of the area is an area where customers can rest. Tables, seats and umbrellas are provided. It is also a place that carriages can drop off or pick up people.

Ruby Jewel
The center of trade and shopping for travelers, merchants and sailors. It is located near the Elatus Spirit Docks. Good being imported are declared and inspected there as well. There is a direct path from the Ruby Jewel to the docks.

The Ruby Jewel is a combination of brick and iron stores and street stalls. It follows a winding path in a W shape with a shortcut street going right down the center. In order to have as much stores as possible, all buildings are attached to one another. The entire area has more of an industrial feel, with metal and bronze being the dominant colors. Most of the roofs are red, and a line of red stones follows the winding path.

Due to the amount of people in the area, carriages are only allowed down the center street.

Redberry Park overlooks the Ruby Jewel

Diamond Jewel
The height of shopping inside of Terminus. Located near the most expensive residences, all of the most luxurious and expensive goods are sold there. The area is a shining example of beauty and elegance. Things such as grime or dirt are completely foreign and quickly cleaned away if introduced. Small gardens all around provide color and sculptures bring culture from all over the world. Guards are on patrol, mainly to help customers but they are also skilled at keeping the peace.

The stores there are all pristine white with decorative carvings in the stone wall. Each business stands apart from the other with their own small lot. They employ people to open doors, greet patrons and tend to their every need.

In the middle of the shopping area is a plaza where people can rest and relax. The floor is made of decorative tile in the symbol of the vis. A multi-level fountain sits at the center.

Prodest (Profit)

The bustling city of industrialism thrives on the economy and governing council which keep the city alive. It's rapid growth has been attributed to it's southern location, when people can't make the trek north to Terminus, they end up there, in the southeast of Secare.

The inlet that leads to the nearby lake has been dubbed for the founder of the city, fondly proclaimed the Numisma Channel. The nearby lake provides the city with what it uses to power it's growing industries. Given that most inventions and factories are producing machinery and technology which runs on water power, the city is mostly inhabited by the Velen.

The upper class sits comfortably in their well stocked homes, but the factoring capitalism leaves the lower middle class in a state of unemployment and poverty. Allegations have been made to the city, claiming acts of slavery and child labor, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Recently, there have been thefts off of ships carrying precious cargo to the city, and the culprits have yet to be caught. The council dismiss all propositions of stopping the thieves, claiming it is simply some mischief and will sort itself out eventually.

There have been talks, notes passed in alleys and bars at dusk, and it seems to many that a rebel movement has appeared to try and remove the council and create an equal chance for everybody, but all chance of a democracy are thought unlikely at present times, despite the organization of a revolution in the city's roots.

Just something I thought up with mention of more cities. It's definitely open to discussion, but I really enjoy the idea of a more industrial city with many plot opportunities.
