A line of red erupted from the withered Arrancar’s finger and the retreating shinigami’s form fell out of the sky like a bird whose wings had been broken. The Commander leapt at Esqueleto in a flash step, but emerged only to find that Esqueleto had darted into his own sonido and stood on a nearby pile of rubble, leaving the Commander to strike only thin air.
“I’m a man of my word,” Esqueleto called into the sky, seeming to take no notice of Shiroi until the Vice-Captain hit the ground. He turned back to the Captain of the 1st. “You’ll excuse me, but if a man ain’t got his word, then what does he got?” He laughed a wheezing laugh. “Don’t give me that look, it was just a bala. I’m a hospitable host, and I’m saving the best for my guests of honor.”
“Gangrenousssss limb. You will be ammmmputtatttedd.” Orcus hissed at the Arrancar’s back and his eyes flashed red. Twin beams of red arced at the dread lord and he disappeared into a sonido, only to find the beams continued their chase.
Shiroi was not going to waste the small opening worrying about the fate of the Vice-Captain. He shoved his sword back into his sheath and ripped the weapon from his belt to hold it in both hands. “Ban-kai!” He cried out, and the air boiled with pestilent reiatsu as Ekirei truly entered the field.
It was like a disease as the sheath rippled and melted, coating the white haori-clad Commander in its inky ebony sheen from head to toe. His face was featureless and muted – a poor reflection of what once had been a human being. The pale moonlight reflected dimly off of him, as if he had become a living embodiment of the night. Lurking within the reflection was the Sin Eater, a memory of the hollow Shiroi had become for decades after his death. How close had he come to being a hollow general himself? How close had he come to being Esqueleto?
The Commander rose from the ground to float up several feet, a true icon of destruction, as his eyeless face scanned to try and detect the Arrancar lord, who appeared and disappeared lately as Orcus’ cero continued in hot pursuit. Shiroi hesitated to join the battle and hedge Esqueleto into the trap as he wished for the two to exhaust each other and allow his debilitating presence to take full effect. He was thankful that Louhi had not attacked yet so that the Arrancar’s power could degrade as much as possible.
Esqueleto’s laugh seemed to echo from one end of Hueco Mundo to the other, from the southern battlefield to the north. He finally stopped and batted the Cero away with the back of his hand, his skin sizzling slightly as crimson energy met enhanced Arrancar skin.
The Arrancar king’s hand went to his hilt and his duster billowed. His grey eyes were ringed by lines of glowing crimson that extend to his entire face. A wild grin stretched across his leathery face, “There ain’t nothin’ more to life than this. The killin’ is going to go on forever. Let the murder begin, Megiddo!”
Hundreds of thousands of voices, lost echoes from all of history called out to the fighting shinigami, vizards, humans and hollows. They all shared the commonality of conflict, dating back to the first time man had taken up arms against another. Their warcries resonated and shook Las Noches to its very foundations. Buildings collapsed into dust as the earth shook.
Hundreds of spirits composed of dust poured from the earth and took shape around Esqueleto. Each took the form of a weapon. Knives, swords, flails, guns and spears of every conceivable design and size roiled about the Arrancar king chaotically. Then, they attacked him.
Flame, bullet and blade riddled the creature in one moment of violence. His flesh melted in some places, split in others. Bullet holes and tears riddled his clothes and scraps of severed muscle and sinew were clearly visible all over his body. But there was no blood from the wounds. Only dust.
As dust spurted out of an open throat to the rhythm of the monster’s heartbeat, Esqueleto’s voice boomed. “I have my bones wrapped around every weapon ever made to kill another man. Killin’ – that’s all I am and that’s all that humanity has been doin’ while I’ve been under the dirt. They’ve gotten damn good at it too.” Dust settled underneath his arm into the form of an enormous Gatling gun that spun in warning of the destruction it was about to bring.
Shiroi could only watch as the apocalyptic spiritual pressure assault him with wave after wave of energy. He had to hold up his hand to shield himself from the sheer strength of it. Only once had he felt energy of such magnitude and it was from a great distance. Now he stood in the center of the storm. Yet he was still standing.
Shiroi’s arm slid into the shape of a shield as the avalanche of projectiles rained down upon him, shoving him feet into the ground with their sheer weight and power and chipping away at the iron that was now his flesh. He could not withstand the onslaught for long.
Orcus shifted behind the corpse only to have Esqueleto turn his free hand and fire a spray of pellets from a shotgun that had materialized in the air. The creature hissed as it was knocked back into a pile of stone and mortar, bleeding from multiple wounds.
