The Fracture: Depth or Connection
[WC] 1560
Vita had spent many weeks in correspondence with Omen. The range of topics varied from abstract enchanting theories to revolutionary concepts of Demvir sociology. Many times the ideas that Omen brought forth were so far-fetched that the young artificer couldn’t see the need or reason to pursue them but it was nice to have someone crazier than he was. However, Omen was an eccentric tinkerer who was excited with all things. Omen woke several years before Vita discovered by a traveling group of Demvir where he became self aware in the safety of others able to follow his own path without the objection or influence of biologicals. Unlike Vita, Omen did not hate or hold any ill will towards the other kingdoms but the skeptical enchanter believed that to be a matter of circumstance. A mind sheltered from the harshness of prejudice. The band he belonged to fare share of tough times but Extricus was adamant to keep Omen behind the scenes in support of the rest.. Vita and Extricus had similar awakenings that molded his trepidation and borderline contempt of bios. Capricious creatures that seemed to have no sense of unity beyond their own self will. [WC] 1560
Vita did not know who he liked more. Extricus for his ideology or Omen for his creativity, innocence, and artisan skills. Suma, as Vita learned to call them was a small group of Demvir that had created a small establishment in the Mountains of Hiemis. Their numbers were few, fifty at most from what the pupil could gather. Correspondence with Omen became less and less until Vita would only get post from Extricus. We, us, pronouns he felt odd about but paid no mind to littered his letters. Extricus explained they wished to remain small which is what gave them the ability to operate with little to no interference of the neighboring races. Paradise in the eyes of Vita. Trust was not so easily given and for a cautious man like Vita it was a two way street.
Time passed and the Suma was ready to invite Vita to join them. In his last letter from Extricus there was an attachment from the collective as a whole. Apparently who he thought of as the leader of them was simply the voice that spoke for all of them. The more he read he became aware of their unique connection. They were like a hive mind, working effortlessly in unison towards specific goals they group deemed more important than others logically. Arcane arts, mechanical cybernetics, engineering, alchemy, history, and even combat training was being taught here. The more one would learn the more the entity learned.
“To the attention of our Brother, Vita. At the request of one of us, Omen, you have been granted consideration to enter Suma. A representative will be in contact with you when appropriate. Please mark your dwelling with a combination of the below ingredients. The formula needed is enchanted within this parcel. At the bottom right of the page was a strange symbol or banner that he was not familiar with. He brushed his hand over its beveled surface, the image sparked and sent an image to his mind. A pillar of sorts with a top and bottom pyramid. The image hovers above the ground and each piece rotated freely from the others. Fora brief moment only Vita saw it and before he could begin to study any more detail it stopped and the image faded from his mind. The page that was sent dissolved slowly into ash and the hermit was left with so many questions.
There was a lot to process for Vita. He would need to procure ingredients he was not familiar with and the ones he did recognize were rather expensive. He also needed to decide if he wanted to join an establishment of Demvir that were a borderline cult. He placed his suspension in the back of his mind to temper and focused on another factor. He considered how much made in a good week and it would take some time to get enough money for him to afford half of what was needed. With no time reference for when the representative would come the young enchanter felt that this was not a timed test but more of a contact us when you are ready. With too much to consider he retired to his chamber to meditate, ground himself, and rest.
Meditation was important to Vita. he would go over his day in his head trying his best to fil his thoughts with the exact feelings and moments he experienced. He would continue his work mentally performing calculations and probabilities of experiments he was running. Meditation was a form of training that Dominus had instilled in him before the uprising. Merging his mind and body into one, mental and physical memory. This session he was consumers with what he felt while he touched the symbol on the attached letter earlier in the day. His mind was blank and in the darkness the image in two dimensions burned like a beacon of fire reaching past the limits of his sight above and below. Its edges almost to hot to look at in the space that was his mind. A geometric field drew itself like a laser around the two dimensional symbol. Shapes like cubes and pyramids and octagonals gew likes crystals in the darkness around him each different colors and intensities. Some covered in a lattice of glowing framework. A feeling on the tip of Vita’s mind's eye. SOmethings so familiar he felt he could reach out and touch someone on the other side. This was a deeper almost telepathic connection that he experienced in his meditation session.
He felt like a bubble surrounded by a cage of light. Formless, just purely existed in a state of awareness and energy. He tried to reach the lights and shapes around him that seemed closer but were clearly farther away than anticipated. He could not reach out, he did not know how. This was not like walking and his movement felt restricted as if he was in a prison or the very least a hold. Within a moments notice Vita was falling back into the void. His energy raced to a bright light. ONe so intense it banished the void he wondered. He opened his eyes, mind blank of thought at the experience that had just happened to him. The incense that was lit had crumbled to ash the candles small puddles of cold wax long past their use. Vits felt exhausted and weak. His body physically sore from the ordeal. He guessed that only a few minutes had past for it did not feel that long. How wrong he was. Startled he looked at the time and then a calendar. Two days had passed. His body so run down from the mental experience of his meditation he could not bear to form a thought from his shock. He pulled his hood down over his eyes and easily drifted into sleep.
In the soft white glow of a room that moved on magic two figures stood looking at a large planetary object. The Demvir were talking over the low hymn of the orbiting bodies around them. One dressing in a gold robe designed with an eye and other symbols that seemed nondescript. The other in a sheer white robe lightly glinting as it caught light from angles.
”How was our newest brothers first experiance to the collective? Where yuou able to garner his true intentions with brother Omen?”
The man dressed in gold let out a chuckle. He moved to a chair which he sat in and folded his legs and hands over one another. ”This latest spark, his light is brilliant. I could feel his drive and ambition. I fear though, we may be getting to him too late. Myself and others spent some time calculation his odds. His true nature, much like yours, is tainted by abuse and self doubt. He needs to move past his contempt for other life and see that it is all connected. All life comes from the great light, the greatest energy that unifies us all given to us by the Vis. From what Omen has shared with my mind, Vita could influence the course of Demvir unity or be its undoing. His energy is much to bright and harsh for the collective as it is now. In fact I needed to sector his access to the session in fear that he would fry the weaker of us. His light could be seen from the deepest parts of the Fracture.”
The two sat and talked more about the possibilities of Vita at great depth. Ultimately coming to the conclusion he needed to achieve some personal growth before he could be brought into the fold. For someone like Vita trails would be more difficult than he thought. He would not be asked to assimilate into the collective until he could shape certain aspects of his personality differently. He would need to see the value in all life. A trial that would not happen over night for him but across a long period of time. The Guide would use the Fracture to influence him to focus on his research until he was ready.
