After a long conversation with professor Albinon, Vita felt the need to retire to his tent confused at how he should process the news he was delivered. From everything, he could devise the research team that was put together consisted of four people. Professor Albinon, Engineer, Fectum Septemtrionis, Apprentice Calum, and Noah, a wilderness survival expert. An Enlil, Velen, and two Laicar assigned to look into the creature known as the Phantasmal Fae by the Arcanum. Each one of them was a specialist in their field that seemingly overlapped when it came to the fae. All of them, while assigned by the guild was lobbied by Albinon specifically. The Velen was the first to fall prey to the tricksters.

Fectum Septemtrionis, a Velen Engineer who hailed from the City of Bubbles, Oppidum Bulla. She stood at a regal 73 inches with translucent tentacles falling from the sides of her head. A small fin rested at the top of her head protruding from her brow and traveled down her spine. Her face was split in half by a cartilage ridge just under her eyes meeting at the nose. Scales of deep pink, cold blues, and silver greys covered her body. In the darkness, faint lines of neon pink would emanate all over her body. She had a certain poise about her that carried over to everything she did. Her large black eyes gave the intellectual woman an innocent appearance that was just as misleading as the depths of the ocean floor. She spoke in a somber tone with hardly any inflection and most times could be heard at a whisper. Much like the professor, she shared the same passion for her research as he did, throwing everything to the wind for the sake of progress.

Her career in trade is how she initially got started with engineering, noticing that she could produce instruments of measure far more refined and delicate than what was being peddled throughout the trades district. Velen biology lent an extra finger to her ability to be so precise in the development of countless measuring devices. Anemometers, altimeters, accelerometers, astrolabes, barometers, tachometer, all perfectly created with less than one percent error in their readings. Her tools were highly sought after and before long people were making knockoffs to join in. Ultimately, Fectum did not enjoy the competition of trade and began taking on requests at her discretion only increased their value; a scholar or researcher that owned a “Septa” was the envy of all his colleagues.

The engineer’s research leads her down the path of perpetual energy and how to deal with the increasing demands of the growing city she lived in. This was the first leap down the rabbit hole into planar theory for the aquatic humanoid. Her first theory was that the eternal currents that swept from the deep far North Oceans into the shallow warm waters of the South. A small idea in the grand scheme of things and Professor Albinon’s vision. He was the one to suggest that Transmeatus, the world between worlds in which all other planes of existence used to travel to the Terrestrial plane would be a more efficient source of energy for her machine. This created her obsession with planar alignments and how to measure the minute readings where they overlapped. She quickly became an expert in this field publishing countless research papers to the Commercium and Arcanium.

She was the first to die at the hands of the fae according to Albinon. Once they had arrived in the forest just after the first full moon her mind slowly warped into a frenzy. Over a few weeks, she became crazed and paranoid. Describing the fae as tormentors from the corner of her vision constantly watching her. This was the first discovery for them that the fae had a certain effect over the mind.

Calum was the next to succumb to the twisted creatures. Not even eighteen years of age the young terrain grew up in the swamps of [Aereius]. He could not call one location home but rather the entire Southern Continent of Paludis. He was apart of a nomadic tribe that favored isolated life in the jungle, being one with nature. Paganism ruled their ideology and enforced their hippy lifestyle. His tribe brought him up teaching him the ways of the forest and about the nuances for each flora and fauna. The Arcanium put the apprentice enchanter in touch with Albinon as a good faith match. They got along well enough and they benefited from each other’s knowledge.

The boys go with the flow approach and “everything returns to the earth and the earth gives us everything” mentality lent itself to Albinon’s anxiety at times. He was always able to get any medical herb or magical component needed due to his vast knowledge of resources. The young alchemist did not understand much of the professor's aspirations or enchantment lectures but, he did enjoy the promise of new ingredients and to be the first to discover them. He wanted to have a book on vegetation and its uses someday, “immortal in the mud” he would say. Eventually, the sprites twisted the mind of the alchemist into making mistakes and staying out of the cave after night cataloging the ambered forest. With the loss of their medic, the Enlil took drastic measures.

Professor Albinon created a pocket dimension for him and Noah to sneak away to. Here, they were cut off from the effects of the fae. With the loss of their medic, Calum, the avian set out to contact the guild. However, upon further discovery, they found they could not leave the forest. The Amber forest was alive and had trapped them there unable to walk out of its influence.

This is when they sent a golem Calum had made with a letter to the guild detailing what was going on in a letter. No one entered the forest for fear of not being able to escape. The few that did were kept in a maze unable to find the location of the original camp. The only reason that Vita had even heard about the research for professor Albinon was the, albeit misleading, request for help posted by the Arcanium.

Before Vita arrived the last to die was Noah; he had the most brutal death of all. Noah was a Laicar whos studies took him to care for all manner of creature. He was here to establish and identify the fae’s habits and behavior.

Not much was known about Noah. He kept to himself and didn’t share many of his observations with the rest of the team. He didn’t open up to anyone and kept the details of his past and profession closely kept. Why? because when you deal with unknown creatures things tend to happen. He never wanted to be on this expedition in the first place but he was requested by the guild specifically for his level head and ability to produce results.

The lone surviving Enlil described the horrible claw marks and purple festering rips that covered his body. All of this was detailed in a running report Albinon was making. All that was left for him to do was finish his research. Their lives would have been in vain or so Vita concluded that was the mental state of the Professor, if not.

Despite his pragmatic lifestyle and view of the other races, Vita could not help but feel for the immense potential of knowledge that was lost due to the professor’s inability to lead. Deep within him was a struggle. The potential for others to be at the pinnacle of their fields and not be a Demvir. He rationalized that he was speaking of the ten percent of each population he could tolerate and that is who he would try to learn about. The professor, however, was not one of them. Over the next few hours, Vita systematically made a strategy to understand the research that was being conducted here and find a way to best honor those who have been killed at the expense of the professor’s weak mind.

He came to one logical conclusion that aligned with his ethos. To protect knowledge and prevent this from happening to someone ever again.

Albinon must die.

I know I come and go and post when I want and I am grateful. I consider this place a haven for me from my stressful Navy Job. I get so much of creating. To help with the person who reads this I have made a chronology to better understand what is going on. Here. I am not sure where to post this but I have made it. Please anyone who has inspiration for me or helps with grammar etc is welcome. I tried to work on run-on sentences here because I have been really bad at them in the past.
