◖ Perseus Artifex Vanitas Perseus is a young man whose many oddities and eccentricities tend to overshadow his genius, and whose disconnected, scatter-brained social disposition belies a deep passion for crafting. His study and practice of the many crafts encompass most of his life. Something of a polymath, Perseus lacks devotion to any one subject. He cares as much for smithing as he does engineering, as much for alchemy as he does mechanics, and he avoids enchanting only out of lack of understanding for the theory behind magic. Prone to bursts of manic inspiration, Perseus flits from one project to another, pursuing his goals with obsessive intensity. It isn’t unusual for him to go days without food or sleep. To an outsider, Perseus can come across as dismissive, rude, overly-blunt, and generally lacking a proper moral compass. His dedication is to crafting, learning new crafts, and implementing his knowledge -- nothing else. While he’s a quick learner and an excellent logician, Perseus seems to struggle with social interaction, empathizing with others, and putting his thoughts into words. The cadence of his speech is typically slow and stilted: during conversation, he is prone to pausing randomly to find words, repeating himself for no reason, and trailing off into mumbling mid-sentence. With a head of wildly curly, uncombed black hair, an equally black left eye, and a faintly-glowing robotic right eye, Perseus’s appearance can be unnerving to strangers – particularly when paired with his already-eccentric disposition. Dark circles stain the skin around his eyes, the result of regular sleep deprivation, and his face, fingers, hands, and arms tend to be covered in thin scars and scrapes in various stages of healing. His fingers bear the thick calluses of any professional artisan. Perseus prefers to wear clothing of his own design, although his sense of fashion leaves much to be desired. A study in contradictions likely caused by being raised in a subtropical climate before relocating to Terminus, most of Perseus’s wardrobe consists of short-sleeved jackets, shirts, shorts, cropped pants, and clogs with fur or heavy insulation sewn into the lining. Even at a young age, Perseus was quick to understand that his sisters resented him. The girls took to bullying and teasing their (admittedly unusual) younger brother during the long stretches of time the three were alone together, and Pers took to shutting himself in his father’s crafting workshop to avoid their company. It was there that he began to develop his interest in trade skills. As soon as he was able (and far younger than was probably safe), Perseus began venturing out into Prenditus during the day, instead. He began taking on apprenticeships, one after another, devouring information, concepts, and techniques from the city's tradesmen. Since Perseus was old enough to speak, his mother has been determined to make a socialite and businessman of her only son – efforts that were doomed to failure from the start. Not only is Perseus entirely uninterested in the inner workings of social circles, he has frequently used family resources on projects that he then gave away for free. An engineering accident led to the loss of all functionality in Perseus’s right eye; with the excuse that the Grand Metropolis holds unlimited opportunities for an up-and-coming young craftsman booming trade, and in truth just to get him out of the way, Olivia sent Perseus off to Terminus to gain ‘life experience’. He spent his first few months in the Metropolis designing, building, and implementing a fully-functional robotic implant. The eye has gone through several iterations, each one improving its versatility and functionality. Perseus currently lives above a large, multi-purpose craft shop near the bottom of Teminus’s mountain valley. The majority of his funds are managed by Tavius Acer, one of the Artifex family stewards, which is probably the only reason Perseus hasn’t starved to death already. |
