Shadowwind
Araevis' Lead Ecologist
Name: Phorcys Nerites
Age: 35
Race: Velen (Aquatic)
Vigor: 1500
Latens: 0
Persona: Phorcys is zealotry given form. Since his revelation while in seminary the man has become wholly devoted toward advancing the worship of his abyssal god. While many discard him as a madmen, most intellectuals find some shred of conceivable truth in the velen’s copious body of work on the nature of divinity and of planes outside the moral realm. Phorcys has an almost supernatural wealth of knowledge of religion and most forms of spirits having devoted most of his life to studying the planes outside normal understanding.
Despite him being rather unhinged in his religious views, growing up the youngest son of a wealthy merchant family has given Phorcys a rather charismatic demeanor. When not diverted onto talks of his god, the velen can be equal parts suave aristocrat and ruthless negotiator. Though he will use any available opportunity to flaunt his knowledge of the celestial planes and to advocate for his dark benefactor.
Those who can weather the storm of lunatic ravings can find a man who embodies the razor’s edge of genius and madness. Loyal to a fault to those he sees as being under his protection, the velen still has a small adventurous streak kept alive in large part to the ruin surveying he does for his god.
Physical Stature: Phorcys cuts an imposing, if initially flamboyant figure. The velen tends to tower over those around him at an massive 6’8”. His limbs are surprisingly sprite for his size, and while his legs are somewhat muscular from swimming the young velen lacks any defined musculature. However, Phorcys is gifted with what Laicar would view as a swimmers build, his broad shoulders allow the man to glide effortlessly through the waters.
The Nerites trace their family heritage to warm tropical waters, which gives Phorcys a rather unique coloration. He is primarily red in coloration though traces of purple, orange, and yellow all weave around his body. After his first encounter with the devil Cete, the man’s pupils seem to have ruptured giving the entirety of his eye a murky black appearance speckled with hints of the deep blue that used to reside there.
While in cities preaching, the man’s form is usually hidden behind a wave of nondescript cloth, usually in a blue tone. In battle, or in situations that allow the velen to be more comfortable, he prefers tighter fitting leather over more protective metal alloys.
Biography: Life for Phorcys appeared to be set for a rather boring one. The youngest of five born to a pair of wealthy velen merchants, he spent most of his early years in and around the family’s bustling trade business. At age twelve he was shipped off to a seminary to become a part of the priesthood as the business was set to be inherited by his oldest brother.
What happened to the velen during his training is still a source of confusion, whoever witnessed what turned the man into worshiping the dark creation he now does have simply disappeared. Upon his revelation, the velen has spent the next two decades of his life studying visae, their associated phenomena, as well as the beings inhabiting the other planes of existence. He has published ten tomes on the natures of these creatures as well as on the idea of divinity. While many view his postulations as simply ravings, a few theologians agree that while his work is extremely heretical his theories, on the surface, appear nothing if not interesting.
