Appearances were deceiving. From what stood upon the outside of the Ninth Division Headquarters seemed a building that appeared just as mundane, just as normal as any other Taisho. What lurked inside was another matter. Through labyrinthine halls that twisted and curved for no apparent reason, past the entrance of random dÁ©cor that seemed wholly unfit for a military- no, a Research and Development station- past what seemed to be offices bustling with hopeful scientists willing to uncover the truth and passion for these mechanical arts.
If one peered closely, through the almost robotic swaths of researchers and the like, the decorum gracing these halls were pieces of machinery, various vials and tubes containing who knew what, and an overall mess of papers and such strewn about. Luckily the Division was practically able to do as it pleased, for the sake of science and the advancement of the afterlife. Messes were inconsequential, as one quickly learned to navigate around the mass of mess- what was more troublesome was navigating through the building itself. Snaking corridors could end up abruptly; doors could either lead nowhere, outside the Headquarters, anywhere.
If one stopped to take a sniff there senses would be overridden with this amalgam of odors, perhaps crinkling their nose one second, inhaling pleasantly the next, and perhaps wanting to vomit horribly another moment. The smells consisted of an odd concoction: antiseptic, malodorous chemicals, sweet perfumes, foreign foods, and other mysterious gases often floated periodically within the Kyuubantai Taisho. For the sake of smelling sanctity, gas masks and nose plugs were usually used.
Amidst the lingering smells came the resounding sounds of a catastrophic symphony. The whirring of machinery buzzed and chirped. What would be quiet for one second a crash could follow suit. And from that crash the whole Taisho itself could quake and rumble. This was quite commonplace within the Division Headquarters; explosions and accidents would occur frequently. Therefore came the explanation of its contorted design- renovations upon renovations would be done practically every week, making the maze that the Kyuubantai Taisho was today.
Murmurs of scientists too busy with their work would sit alongside the sounds of mechanics. An ear piercing screech would echo through an empty hall, searing through however many floors the Ninth Division held. Howling, wailing, the sounds of something that perhaps lived or existed in this life could be heard like phantoms within a spiritual place. Experiments of untold horror and awe unfolded each day, all for the benefit of science.
Somewhere within this architectural hell laid an enormous auditorium. Its size could be compared to the Sou Kyoukou's top; the massize area seemed to make little to no sense being within a building half its size. The nonsensical room had an almost never ending flight of stairs leading up to the stage, where dozens of tables held near countless trinkets, all polished and brand new. Standing beside these tables were members of the Ninth- particularly the fabled team of the Saika Ikki- and at the middle stood the most prominent figure clad in his white haori.
Under disheveled black and silver streaked hair, an enormous grin fell upon the tanned Captain of the Ninth, Saika Rakushun, proud owner of this Division and its contents. Dozens of lights fashioned upon him as he lied extravagantly upon a floating throne-like bed with a lustrous sheen. The research head knew of his own aesthetic beauty because he had ordered the lighting technicians to make him look as picturesque as possible. Why did he bear such a wide smile?
For he had plans with this meeting and given the fact that he hardly spoke with the majority of his subordinates, now would be the best time to implement such a plan. Lording over his heavenly podium, with the chamber of the roof seeming almost as endless as the skies, Saika felt accomplished. Soon his subordinates would file in. Surely they would know that their Captain was organizing them for an important event... but for what exactly. The rare smile that split his usual deadpan facade was now a devilish sneer.
“S... Saika Taichou,” a somewhat demure voice squeaked from beneath long black hair covering her face. This came from Minami Midoriko, the personal aide and assistant to Rakushun. Hiding behind him and nearly in the presence of the mammoth shadow he overcast, it was almost as if the tall woman didn't exist at all. “I know you're thinking something... that's not right. I can tell... when you smile like that.”
“...You're the one that told me to formally meet with my subordinates, Mimi-chan. You're just lucky that I finished building this floating dais when you asked me to,” Raku slapped his palm against the hovering throne, while kicking out his legs in utter relaxation. “Why can't I have fun with my subordinates when doing official business at the same time.”
“Knowing you, you probably devised that bed to invite all the female members onto it,” scathingly replied the feline-eared Gustav Adolphus, with a cool adjustment of the half-rimmed spectacles adorning his face.
“Ugh. As if any respectable woman with a brain would want to lay on that insult to science with a moron atop of it,” Fiona Kincade folded her six arms and huffed angrily, completely avoiding her dark orange irises from even looking at the floating monstrosity.
“Oi, I think it's a great idea,” the whiny and raspy voice of Jousuke interjected before any additional insults could be tossed. Scratching the gray and splotchy skin of his barely haired head that shone with a layer of mucous, he gave out a small chuckle. “Wish I thought of that instead.”
“...At least Jousuke's the one thinking here,” Raku eyed the precious members of his Saika Ikki; they all had mouths, but each were talented members and specialists in branches of science. They were irreplaceable despite giving their Captain lip- although their bonds and relationships amongst one another entitled them perfect reason to. “This dais isn't particularly for women, rather, it'll be my main mode of transportation in this damn labyrinth of a Division. I don't like strenuous physical effort.”
“...You mean walking,” the bald headed Bartholomew spoke up, obviously teasing his Captain. He waved his hands all about the hovering bed, examining it thoroughly with the yellow irises on each palm. “Well, if you want to stay out of shape, so be it. Just don't be surprised when someone steps up and challenges you for your position... just like you did so long ago.”
“Hey... That's not the point,” Minami said, her tone growing more serious. “I don't care what Saika-Taichou does with his inventions, so long as he isn't molesting anyone. What I'm trying to get at is... this is an auditorium for a large number of people yet... Saika-Taichou has already acquainted himself with at least half of the Division already. This was supposed to be a plan to discuss the future course of action in the following battle to come...”
“It's okay, Mimi-chan, I've got things under control,” Raku casually flicked a nostril with one of his knuckles, doing his best to give her an award winning smile. She would no doubt enjoy it and stop questioning him about his great plans. “We'll just wait for them to come, it won't be long. I can hardly contain my excitement, can you? And besides that, since when have my ideas ever gone awry?”
Unfortunately Midoriko couldn't reply; that accursed smile of the horned man, accompanied in that light, caused her to bite her lip. His plans went awry about 45% of the time.
“Hey... you guys... they're starting to come in,” a tiny voice seemed to squeak from the smallest member of the Saika Ikki, the diminutive Hoshino Seiun. She pointed at the black mass of robes swarming in from the mouth of this expansive chamber.
