[PM] [Hueco Mundo] Week 203: The Only Freedom

"You asked me once why I needed to be a Captain, Yuzuki." Her eyes looked over at the man she had followed in a time that seemed ages prior, unable to note all the small nuances he carried about him that were no longer concealed by a Haori or a position of power over her. In truth, he seemed....smaller, a pale imitation of the man who had left her the position of Captain and laughed in her face for it.

Is this the man I failed to see all this time?

A spirited swing of her weapon chased the ebony ooze from the blade, painting a long arcing stroke across the sand. Bringing the silver halberd back to bear towards the endless sea of soulless horrors an expressionless mask seemed to settle over the Templar Queen, a knowing sign that whatever qualms she had with the abrupt return of her predecessor would have to wait. "Makoto." her voiced raced across the battlefield like a thunderclap. "The wounded need whatever protection you can afford them....we may have to repeat Tokyo."

Or is all that's left of him?

The pale fire roared to life around her in an instant, covering the skin and clothing of the Captain with shimmering scales of steel. "Yuzuki Masato...I will now give you the answer I had not yet learned when you left."

"Ban Kai."

With two weighted words from the woman the gates of Hell themselves opened, smashing down friend and foe alike with the unyielding pressure of the Templar Queen's final release. Coated head to toe in glinting steel, she appeared almost a monster...even among the countless Hollows that surrounded them. Ebony locks twisted and hardened, becoming a crown of formidable spears that sat atop two eyes that burned with hellfire.

"I need to become a Captain for my friends, and myself. I have seen what the Haori does to good men and women, and I refused to let it happen again. I will use my power to guide my friends, to let them find their own strength." The halberd at her side had disappeared, replaced with a massive hammer of jagged steel, the wyvern's face upon it bearing the same intensity as the Templar Queen herself. "I can endure this, as I endured you. This world is welcome to throw everything it is able to at me, and when it has finished I will still be standing. I am the shield of all those I love, and the sword with which they will carve their own victories."

"Hollows. Shinigami. The Forty-Six." She strode forward calmly towards the ebony sea of putrid flesh, unflinching. "I don't care who or what tries to tear us down." For a moment, the Captain turned to look at the man she once called mentor. The leonine irises that had viewed him in different lights so many times before seethed wisps of crimson flame.
"They will fail."

"That is why I will sacrifice my lifeblood for them." The hammer at her side slowly raised, the jagged maw opening to release a massive gout of living flame. The firebolt raced through the unholy creatures, cutting a black swath through Hollow and the sands upon which they stood in one stroke. As the dust settled a massive cone of the desert had been wiped away, replaced with blackened sands and the screeching of the base creatures as they fled the impact zone. "That is why I am Captain, that is why I lead the Blood Templar."

Though decreased, the alabaster fire hammered across the field without mercy as the Captain turned to her officers. "No one dies today! None of you are going to give these freaks a goddamn inch!"

Update
Im at half Rei now, should give you guys a bit of a break pressure wise. Seriously though, let's fuck them up.

The brunette was lost. The entire situation was so confusing that she had no idea what she should do. Enemies and friends were all mixed together. Somehow the shinigami had been pitted against each other. Even she had almost...

Her violet eyes flicked over toward Mitsuyo, down in the sand and trembling with shock.

When she thought of how she had almost... her sword hand quivered, shaking with uncertainty and fear. How could she fight, not knowing if she would hit a friend, not knowing if she would hit Mitsu..? Waves upon waves of hollows surrounded them, moving closer every second, easily numbering in the thousands.

How many were real? Were any of them? All of them?

How many could they take down before getting overwhelmed?

Her grip on the sealed zanpakuto slackened. Even Aka himself did not say anything to dissuade her. The zanpakuto was no clearer on the situation than she was. Something out here was driving them mad, was making them see things that weren't there.

As if to punctuate that thought, Tsubaki's attack revealed their enemy to be none other than Yuzuki Masato. The girl's eyes widened. Even from this distance she heard his voice, hoarse, weak, but familiar. It was arrogant, condescending, but meaningful. She stared, dumbfounded, at the diminutive former captain, felt a swell of hope at seeing him standing back to back with Tsubaki.

"... there is no happy ending. You do not become re-invigorated by a dream of winning.
You are consumed with the thought of not losing. In truth, you are no longer 'you'.
Nothing matters. And soon enough you forget what you are fighting for,
and at that point you are lost to the world - and yourself.

Bleeding from a hundred cuts, her weapons chipped and broken, clothing in tatters... Kyu had looked up on the captain and listened.

"Do you know how you avoid such a state? Strength. That's it. It is all you can do.
To attain such a strength that you never have to protect someone from an opponent
that much stronger than you, because no such opponent exists. That's it! It's the only way
to ensure the safety of those you care about - to be the wall no one can break! That type of strength
comes from such intense training that people regard you as a lost cause, something inhumane
and something to be feared. From an endless pursuit of situations that will
make you stronger. From a pursuit of fearlessness."

Fearlessness... like Leon himself. Kyu turned her eyes, looked at Ilsa, at Mitsu, at Picca, at Yuurei... Despite all her training and confidence, Kyu was not the strongest person here... but nor was she the weakest. She had not reached that state, was not the unstoppable monster that Leon Valiente Simeon had been, but she was strong.

Could she get stronger, though? If she cast aside her humanity, her doubts and fears, could she be strong enough?

"I didn't care about 'not losing,' just about fighting. About giving everything I had to
push forward, to break through your guard, to cut you. I don't know what all this talk
about truth and existence is. I just know that if I keep having fights like this,
I'll get better, I'll get stronger, and I will be the one that makes the choices."

Choices like who lives and who dies... choices about what to do with her life, about what happened to her friends and allies. As long as she held a sword, as long as she was free to fight... that was what she wanted, what she sought.

"... you're a little like Leon, I think. Dumber, but the core is similar. So I'll tell you
that the only thing that follows from such a path is being alone. It's not suited
towards someone who thinks about protecting others."

Protecting others like Mitsuyo, like Ilsa and Yuurei and Picca and everyone else here. Even Tsubaki! Kyu felt her fist tightening down on her zanpakuto. Waves of white sand began to radiate outward as the girl's fighting spirit began to rekindle, as she thought about why she was strong, why she fought, why she walked that path, and why Yuzuki was still wrong!

"If I train more, if I fight harder, if I get stronger... then I know I won't be alone.
Because I will always choose to protect those close to me."

"Always," Kyu repeated aloud, the fire back in her eyes. She grinned then, facing Yuzuki's back, thankful for the words he said so long ago. They were words she hadn't really understood or taken to heart before.

She looked at the advancing hollows, looked at her allies, and finally, looked down at Mitsu. Resolve hardened, the Seventh Seat stepped forward and gripped Nananen Ki firmly. "Kishi kaisei, Nananen Ki!" she called out quietly, confidently. Her reiatsu billowed forth once again, pouring out along with an appreciative rumble from her zanpakuto spirit.

Kyu gripped the shikai form of her sword in both hands. She was tired, true... but her sword was whole, her body was whole, her spirit was whole. Yuzuki had taken all of that away from her and she had still fought. He had taken everything and she still fought, until her arms would no longer lift above her hips, until her legs would no longer carry her. If she could do that in training... then she could do it now.

"Ban..."

A sudden heavy spiritual pressure pounded down on her, interrupting her release and knocking her down to one knee, fist in the sand. Jaw agape, Kyu stared wide-eyed at the Templar Queen, watching her power coil around her, tearing away at everything around her.

No, Kyu certainly wasn't the strongest.

Mustering all of her strength, Kyu stood again, squaring her stance and eyeing the hollows, halted in their tracks but still very much a threat. "Ban Kai!"

Strength flooded into her, lessening the weight of the Templar Queen's spirit. Instead of being smothered by it, she felt invigorated. Enshrouded once again in the red fighting dress of her bankai, wielding falchions as long as she was tall, Kyu felt like she had a choice again.

Tsubaki and the captains could sort out the leaders or the cause behind everything. If they held back, if they sat and waited, then even the regular hollows would become a threat.

"Mitsu..." she called out. When there was no answer, she looked down at the boy. If he'd been worn down before, now with the weight pressing down on him he was practically prone on the ground. Kyu reached down, about to grab his shoulder, before stopping.

Gritting her teeth, Kyu kicked the boy sharply in the ribs.

"Mitsu!" she shouted. "Snap the fuck out of it! You are stronger than this!" Knuckles tight on her swords, she yelled, "Stand up! You're an officer, you're in charge of defending those beneath you and supporting those above you! This is no place for people like Yuurei and Picca!" The girl looked at him, reiatsu coiling around her and surging through her. She met his stunned, fearful eyes, and recognized the terrified tremor in her own words. Shaking it off, she softened her voice. "They need someone to protect them, someone strong like you.

"If you can protect them, I swear I will get you out of here alive, no matter what."

She turned away, facing the swarms of hollows. How many were there? A thousand? Two thousand? More? "No turning back," the girl said, mostly to herself, "no other plan."

Leon had taken out ten thousand hollows.

"I swear, Mitsu." She gave the redhead a little smile, just for him.

Then she was gone, and the line of hollows disintegrated in the face of her assault.

What?
Kyu is going fury mode on all of the surrounding hollows. She knows she can't figure out what's going on, and it puts her farthest away from the one person she absolutely must protect, while at the same time letting her go all out.

It's also my way of removing her from the main fight 'cause I can't handle that many main fights.

I knew it! I knew this would happen!

Ilsa had no idea who the strange shinigami was, except that Tsubaki-taichou, Ryoujin, and Kyuketsu seemed to know him and his reiatsu was incredibly strong. But... was this yet another illusion? Was the Vasto Lorde trying to protect itself by making itself look like a shinigami, or had the 'Vasto Lorde' been this shinigami all along?

She hated this. Tenrai Chikaku, and especially the bankai form of that ability, was supposed to let her see through this kind of stuff. It had in the past! Not here, though. Not when it mattered most.

Haresuno's voice echoed in her head, demanding an update while Ilsa was trying to sort out the situation and keep her bankai in check. Just what she needed. ”Where are you, Uchiharu-san? Get out here, we need every fighter we can get! There's a mob of Hollows and something that looked like a Vasto Lorde leading them. Once Tsubaki-taichou attacked it, it turned into a shinigami. I have no idea who he is, but it seems that Tsubaki-taichou, Ryoujin, and Kyuketsu know him.”

Before she could say anything more, a crushing weight slammed into her. Ilsa gasped, locking her knees to stay upright under the now familiar pressure of the Templar Queen's reiatsu. A stab of pain coursed through her body.

Fledgling, let go!

Crystal wings exploded into a shower of razor-edged fragments, winking in the pale light of Hueco Mundo's moon as color flooded back into Ilsa's garments. The flames surrounding her blade turned to a nimbus of white, stretching into the familiar shape of a glaive, and the light solidified into transparent crystal. Ilsa drove the butt of the weapon into the sand, clinging to it like a walking stick. She could still stand, and probably move, which told her that Tsubaki-taichou wasn't at full strength. This was quite bad enough, though.

Hinometori, how long do I have to wait before I can bankai again?

Again? It will be some time. I can’t say exactly how long, as you’ve never tried to fully release me in quick succession before.

Well, that was a lot of help. Thank goodness I’m an arcanist. I don’t need bankai for mass destruction, and I don't have to move much as long as I stay out of the fray. Ilsa narrowed her eyes at the pack of Hollows, picking a target. If Tsubaki-taichou was going to blow them up, Ilsa was more than happy to follow her lead. There; a large creature that looked like an unholy cross between a giant toad and a scorpion. It was a nice big target, it was distinctive, and most importantly it was quite some distance from the steel-edged blur that was Kyuto. "Mask of blood and flesh, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man!” She raised her left hand. "On the wall of blue flame, inscribe a twin lotus. In the abyss of conflagration, wait at the far heavens.

"Hadou number seventy-three, Souren Soukatsui!”

Two enormous disks of blue flame screamed through the mob, igniting several Hollows before reaching their target. The toad-scorpion tried to hop aside, but it wasn’t quite fast enough.

The twin projectiles met with a crash of thunder. A massive azure fireball bloomed from the point of impact, vaporizing Hollows and raining globules of molten sand onto those lucky enough to be outside the inferno.

GMs, let me know if I've got too much going on here and I'll trim it back. Trying to keep up with the massive Battle Royale-ness.

As the remnants of Ilsa's kidou dropped in chunks of molten sand, the Blood Templar took note of Tsubaki's and the other Arcanist's Bankai releases. Anything he had to say was left unsaid for the most part save for-

"That's more like it," Ryoujin muttered, his words left in the wake of his heightened speed. Shunpoing towards the nearest creature, the youth eagerly punched the humanoid-looking figure squarely in its upper jaw, sending it spiraling backwards towards two of its own brethren. As the behemoth crashed into its allies, a huge gust of sand shot up into the air. Before the three could so much as recuperate, they found their cries and shrieks of rebuttal cut short by the jagged-edged longswords skewering them.

Landing not so lightly on his feet from the whole stunt, the pink-haired youth coughed and turned towards the ever-growing mob.

No one said this would be easy, Kazeoni reminded.

...Well then, at least work with me for a bit, eh?

We'll see about that, the spirit replied, more as a hint to what would inevitably happen soon enough.

As much as he hated to admit it though, Kazeoni was right. Unlike before, his time was limited now. Even if that Espada earlier had been an illusion, it felt all too real. At this point, there was no guarantee that his spiritual pressure would hold out for the duration of this fight. He had never pushed his shikai release this far before, and there was no telling when his soul slayer would revert back to its sealed form.

How much do I have?

I can't say... Two minutes tops?

"All the more reason I guess!" he exclaimed with the utmost conviction, "Eat this!"

Note
Realistically speaking, Ryoujin's pretty spent at this point, having already used his shikai for a few turns before with the "espada" and also having used utsusemi. He probably has one or two more trump cards in his arsenal, but that'll really be up to how things go. Wayne, if you want, we can start busting out UF techs + dome of death if it comes to that.

The ebony-haired arcanist stood up straight as ever, with a slightly relieved gleam upon her pair of auburn eyes. One by one, she eyed the shinigami around the vicinity. Once more she stood in a single spot, her feet planted upon the fine alabaster sands of Hueco Mundo, still far away from the medic captain, and perhaps farthest from the Templar Queen. The moon smirked upon them, these little shinigami forced to fight under the mercy of its diminutive light. Everyone lashed out to the monsters with their trump cards, sending off monstrous assaults back and forth. They were fighting at their very best, alright...

"Everyone, please gather around me! Soul Society sent a message that they will be sending us a Senkaimon shortly..." Yuurei spoke with her loudest voice, in an attempt to overcome the boisterous noise upon the sands. She even raised both of her arms and waved them frantically in the air. A cloud of sand rose up from her feet as she jumped up and down, hoping to catch everyone's attention. There might even have a peril in regards to the communicator as its container bounced in unison with the arcanist's motion.

Her role in this whole expedition was to serve as a communication bridge between Soul Society and Hueco Mundo. And that, she undeniably tried to fulfill with her greatest efforts.

Udo winced when he spotted a comrade from one of his previous missions, Kamenashi Yuurei, struggling towards him. Damn, this deception business has hit her hard...good thing she’s moving towards someone who can help. To help ease her mental burden, the reaper yelled out, "Keep it up Yuurei, you can do it!”

As if fate wanted to prove Udo wrong, or simply enjoyed the irony, straight after the shinigami yelled out his words of support, he was slammed by the sudden release of Tsubaki’s full strength. The man caught his breath, and ground his teeth under the growing weight of his comrades. To nobody, he asked, Why am I being crushed by my own allies!?

Thankfully, the weight upon his soul was partially relieved as the Templar Queen unloaded half of her power in an instant, cutting a swathe through the horde. Udo stood in place, holding guard over Seitaro as the rest of the force went on the offensive. Right now, it was his job to think.

We saw hollows, and slayed them.

We saw Espada, and fought them.

The Espada were revealed as shinigami.

We saw a Vasto Lorde, and started to fight him.

The Vasto Lorde was revealed as a shinigami.

The Vasto Lorde was trapped...

Cogs turned in Udo’s mind, searching for a flaw. Every illusion has a flaw, because reality is simply too complex to perfectly imitate. What was the gap in this deceit?

We never killed an illusion!

Whenever an illusion was under threat of being killed, it ceased to exist. The eighth seat yelled out, "Anenokoji-Taichou! Matsumara-Taichou! We never killed an illusion! Whenever an illusory character was under threat of death, the illusion was broken, revealing the underlying truth!”

Would this information help? Was it correct? There was no way to be certain, but that was the way the real world worked. Since you’re not omniscient, there is always uncertainty.

"Aye,” Makoto responded to Tsubaki’s call without looking up from his task. That very thought had already crossed the nobleman’s mind. It worked then under similarly dire circumstances, perhaps it would now.

"There,” the healer captain said a few moments later, his tone filled with relief. Following soon after the release of a deep breath, the warm cerulean glow that had enveloped his hands for the greater part of the last several minutes died away. "He should be stable enough for transport now. Just try not to jostle him too much when our transport arrives.” The nobleman gave Senesati a reassuring smile and then nodded to the spell-blade tasked with ferrying the injured man.

With that finally done, Makoto rose from his kneeling position to take stock of what was going on around him. The first word that came to the healer’s mind was chaos, utter chaos. Not only were the unfortunate members of the expeditionary team under siege by teeming hoards of hollows and the dread Vasto Lorde, but so too did they all battle madness. All across the field blades cut through the air in a manner that was not as crisp as they should have been. Fighters renowned for their skill appeared sloppy and in a daze. Some poor souls even appeared to be fighting enemies that were not actually there.

Fortunately for the mender, Placebo seemed to have given himself and those few gathered closely around him respite from the ravages of their own minds. But was it still indeed working? Makoto was beginning to truly wonder after quickly scanning the field beyond the walls of his final release. To his left, a weary looking shinigami—a young woman with strikingly auburn eyes—just barely stumbled through the barrier of his bankai. There was an almost visible weight seemingly lifted from the girl’s shoulders as she found release from Tsubaki’s oppressive presence. This in and of itself was not the strange part. It was instead what was happening in the young woman’s wake.

In the distance, Shinigami appeared to be drawn towards a cluster of (from the feel of them) highly dangerous hollows. ‘Drawn’ was the appropriate word because the men and women that were making their way towards certain death did not do so racing with fangs bared and malice in their eyes, but did so sluggishly with expressions of pure joy and relief such as a man wandering the desert suddenly finding himself faced with a shimmering oasis.

But just as he was about to do something, anything to avert tragic disaster, his attention was drawn to yet another developing nightmarish scene. Was he seeing this correctly? Was Tsubaki truly standing next to the foul hollow as if it was a companion? A chill ran down the nobleman’s spine as he realized the depth of the Vasto Lorde’s horrible ability.

"TSUBAKI!” the healer captain roared, his stomach turning over. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? STRIKE IT DOWN OR GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE! YOU’RE STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO HE BEAST!”

The healer's warning came too late. Clawed digits lanced out, sliding dexterously between the steel scales of the Templar Queen's shell, parting muscle and sinew as bored ever deeper into the hapless Shinigami's flesh. For all the power the former Kenpachi wielded, she had fallen for the Vasto Lorde's ruse hook, line and sinker. The apparition of Yuzuki Masato vanished as quickly as it had appeared; the beast no longer needed to conceal himself now that the swordswoman had let her guard down.

"How quickly you gave into madness," the creature chided, moving its fanged maw closer to the girl's pallid visage. Wisps of putrid breath seeped from between its clenched teeth as it came eye to eye with the Templar Queen. "Your mind is weak."

With a tug, the beast pulled its hooked appendage from Tsubaki's flesh, staining the alabaster sand with a splash of crimson. All around him, lesser Shinigami fought futilely, trapped in the insanity he had sewn -- engrossed by it. A rapturous moment for the eldritch horror, indeed. The weight of the creature's presence redoubled, bearing down on the morsels in his vicinity as midnight flames erupted from the morose lantern around his neck. Streaking over the pale sands in a heartbeat, the conflagration overtook that of the Templar Queen -- shrouding the whole of their battleground in its atramentous blaze.

Cold eyes narrowed to slits as the masked abomination turned its attention to the healer captain. In a burst of movement almost too quick to perceive, the manacled Hollow stood face to face with stunned Shinigami. Reaching out, the beast placed one snake-like digit on the man's forehead.

"Go mad."

"My oh my. It seems my suspicions were correct after all. How shocking.”

For once, his restraint actually paid off. Call it distrust or unease, but something about the former Captain just didn’t sit well with Kyuketsu... regardless of what Tsubaki thought. He kept his intentions at bay, holding only to close scrutiny rather actual action. In the end, however, it seemed the commander of the Fourth was the one who had some senses sharper than the rest. And he was right—the Templar Queen was indeed standing right next to the ancient creature from before. Lo and behold, the warm and fuzzy reunion was nothing more but a shit-stained ruse meant to take advantage of a woman’s aching heart. How original.

Pointing his zanpakutou high towards the black heavens, the Vice-Captain shook his head as he continued, "I suppose it’s my turn then. Ban Kai.”

What came next was a flash. Less than an instant, even before his shadowy cloak could drape over his shoulders, Kyuketsu whipped his blade forward towards the ancient Vasto Lorde. In the wake of the slash came a downpour of concentrated spirit energy, its ethereal black flames racing viciously towards the target with great avarice. And with a swift turn of the heel, the young man followed the attack with yet another, a kidou of all things. Free arm stretched out and index finger pointed, he whispered, "Hadou Seventy. Kokuryuha.”

.

Mitsu clutched at his side with one pale hand and stared up at Kyuto with wide, vivid green eyes. Curled in Hueco Mundo's blistering white sand, halfway propped up on one elbow, with Ataru's hilt warm in his palm and his ribcage smarting where the girl's foot had struck home, he stared.

The world was in an uproar around them – a war of hollows and shinigami, blades and teeth and kidou and claws and killing intent blazing in everyone's eyes – and Mitsu barely noticed. The roiling, burning energy of multiple full releases sent a wave of pressure to bear down on him, and he barely noticed. A sandy gust of wind, backdraft from the fight, buffeted at his hair and stung at his exposed skin, and that he didn't notice at all.

The redhead felt numb; all of the pain, the fear, the hurt, the regret, all of it condensed into the ache high on his right side.

Ow. He thought, distantly. Somewhere, off in the back of his mind, was a flicker of indignation.

"Mitsu!"

Mitsu flinched at the cutting edge of Kyu's voice.

But he could hear her – he could understand – and the voice of a dead woman, the unseeing glint of her eyes, was gone in that moment.

So he listened.

And when she turned away and he was left alone in the sand, he let her words sink in.

"If you can protect them, I swear I will get you out of here alive, no matter what."

His hand closed on Ataru, clenching it until his fist was trembling and his fingers were white with the effort.

Shit.

Shit.

How dare she.

How dare she trust him with this.
"I thought we were supposed to protect each other. I'm not your damsel in distress or something - I'm your friend. Right?"

It was only once his head started to ache that Mitsu realized he'd been gritting his teeth, hard enough to make his muscles stand out in his jaw.

Ataru.

There was no response from the spirit.

I know I'm fucked up right now. I know...I know there is a lot of shit I need to deal with, and I haven't...and now that's biting me in the ass.

Mitsu dragged himself to his feet, laboriously. Sweat beaded at his hairline, gathered at the nape of his neck.

But you were right. That's for later. Right now, I just need you to do one thing.

Jesus fucking Christ, there was too much going on. Kidou lit the battlefield in a swirl of arcane energies, and he could barely separate the roar of the hollows from the roar of his comrades trying to communicate with each other. As he looked around, he ignored the trembling in his hand.

I don’t want...anyone getting hurt because of me. Ever. I’m supposed to protect people, not...be a fuckin’ liability.”

It didn't matter. Only one thing mattered right now.

One thing.

"Ataru,” Mineto Mitsuyo, Eighth Seat of the First Division, said with a calm he hadn't felt since Tokyo. "Unravel.”

The sword fractured like spun glass, shattering into thousands of glowing, dust-sized fragments in the air around him; only two small spheres remained, the basis for the zanpakutou's released form. The dual scrolls of Mitsu's shikai coiled around him like a red and green multi-faceted barrier, but he was already moving. He didn't give himself a chance to think – to remember why it was he had hesitated before. Later. He could panic later.

Right now there was a metric fuck-ton of hollows advancing on them, and one going around ruining their captains.

"The arrows that fell a hero,” Mitsu chanted, stumbling through the sand towards the front line, where shinigami were shuffling towards the enemy horde with their weapons lowered, their gazes distant. He didn't know what the hell was going on, but Kyuto's words thundered in his ears.

Protect them.

I know.

Protect them.

I will.

"Falling sun. Mourn, precious moon, for the withering earth.Hadou Forty-four, Hadou Forty-Four. One Hundred Wooden Arrows.

Arrows spun themselves into existence in the air above him, their tips ignited with a telltale glow of kidou. At a gesture they rained down upon the front-most ranks of hollows.

blah
TL;DR - Mimi used that one arrow spell thing then used

Ability - Saki Wataru "Bloom"

By paying an additional 25% of the base spell's cost, Mitsuyo can cause a projectile kidou to bloom, exploding outward at the point of impact. The effect has a radius of 1 foot per 500 Kidou, capping at 30 feet with 15,000 Kidou.

to make them do the explody thing. =T

The sounds were horrifying, the screeching, the yelling, the crying. Who was friend and who was foe? That line had already been blurred and it was only getting fainter by the second. Were the people around Picca allies, enemies or were they even there at all?

The weary shinigami still had her head pressed against the sand. She was trying to control her trembling body but between the stress of all the high powered spirit pressure flying about and the strain of maintaining her shikai made it tough. The constant malicious energy from the vasto lorde was the worst. She barely wanted to think as every thought was of horrible things.

Are ye still there? Picca asked IMINT.

Her response was a loud static. There wasn't even a garbled voice in there.

"Someone?" the shivering shinigami croaked. "Anyone?"

IMINT was still there though. It had to be. She could feel the visor firmly on her head. And everyone else, her shinigami allies, they were still around and they were still fighting. Stastically speaking, she still had most of her energy from having done almost no fighting but her body was just so weary. Her hand clutched into the sand. She was an officer, meant to guide and protect others. But they were the ones doing all the fighting now.

Gritting her teeth tightly, Picca slowly tried to stagger up to her feet.

I have no clue how to do those embedded music thingies so here.

"Go back to Hell."

The flames of a foe the creature believed vanquished roared to life once more, fueled all the higher by the insult paid to her injuries. An inelegant burst of shunpo brought the wounded Templar directly behind the abomination, her jagged hammer slamming straight down atop the Vasto Lorde's skull. Though the blow was far from a mortal one, it gave her the momentary advantage she needed.

"Makoto! Where the hell is our ticket home?!" Again and again she rained down unrelenting strikes against the prone creature, each attack more reckless and unrefined than the last. Sand rocketed up and away from the blows, each one bearing the weight of the Templar Queen's enormous pressure behind it. Whether she was aware of it or not, the cadence of strikes was accompanied by a ragged scream from her own throat, increasing in ferocity with each resounding strike.

Going to die here.

The words repeated themselves with each fall of the hammer, providing an otherworldly percussion to the unwise assault. As the full might of the Eleventh's Captain smashed the figure further and further into the welcoming embrace of the desert sands the words within her mind grew deafening almost to the point where they drowned out all other rational thought.

Going to die here. Going to die. All of you are going to die.

The jagged maw of her hammer opened wide, seething over with the living fire that had laid waste to hundreds of lesser Hollows in a single stroke.

I am the shield. I am the sword.

Without restraint of a single second Tsubaki brought the hammer brimming with hellfire down upon the creature.

"I HAVE NOT-"

A second blow augmented by the flames crashed down, weaker than the last.

"-COME THIS FAR-"

A third. A fourth. The attack that had been so fearsome with its initial assault was wavering, reduced again and again by the Templar Queen's rapidly dwindling spiritual force.

"-TO DIE NOW!"

Not dead
At least not yet, you're gonna have to do it 2 more times brah.

Ability: Scales of the Titan Lord, The Seven Tragedies of Man - The scales of Gravios glitter in an everlasting hue of night, each brimming with the intent to cause pain beyond measure to any who would threaten the master that they defend.

Through tragedy and pain one becomes stronger, through suffering one is sculpted into what they will one day rise to be. The primal desire to endure and withstand harm gives rise to an internal fervor that seeks vengeance against those who would inflict the suffering. As before, the scales enable the Captain to ignore all minor wounds, in addition to moderate attacks in Ban Kai. Severe and fatal wounds are treated as if moderate, however the limitation to this is that Tsubaki's Ban Kai can only mitigate 3 lethal wounds, any further attacks that would take the Captain's life continue to be fatal.

When Tsubaki is struck, the malicious force contained in the scales is brought to life, bringing to bear an event of great sorrow and loss in the life of an attacker. This recollection occurs in the foes mind, and cannot be circumvented via any mental discipline or conditioning.

Sev, you have some mindfuck of your own to write. As far as damage goes, it was 50% of my remaining rei for the first hit, then 50% of that, then 50%, etc. I imagine you're going to be plenty banged up but far from out of the fight. Have fun with it.

Oh no. No no no no no. This could not be happening. Ilsa’s gut twisted in sheer, primal terror as the unknown shinigami turned back into a Vasto Lorde and stabbed right through Tsubaki-taichou’s armor. The armor born of her bankai, the power that had flattened hundreds of Hollows in Tokyo.

"Go mad.”

Someone was beating a drum, right at the edges of Ilsa’s hearing. Her mouth was suddenly dry; she would have given her vice-captain’s badge for a drink of water. Would Matsumoto-taichou fall victim to their enemy’s power? The thought of all that power pointed their way- pointed her way... oh Mother. The drum pounded in her ears.

"I don’t care who or what tries to tear us down. They will fail.”

That’s right. We are the Gotei. Ilsa took a long, shaky breath. And I am a vice-captain of the Gotei. Even if I fall, we will not!

An earsplitting screech ripped the air to her right. Ilsa looked over to see Kyuketsu, of all people, unleash a dragon of ebon flame at the Vasto Lorde. Kokuryuha? From an officer of the Eleventh? This better not be another illusion.

The vice-captain took a quick internal inventory. She was tired, but Ilsa figured she still had a few good kidou left in her. If everyone hit that never-to-be-sufficiently-accursed Vasto Lorde hard and fast, hopefully it would go down before it got even more shinigami to do its dirty work. So far, the only time it had hit them directly was when it deceived Tsubaki-taichou into lowering her guard.

"Cast a memorial for heavenly light, buried in the traps of consummate darkness...”

A voice came from the thin silver chain on her right ear. "Falling sun. Mourn, precious moon, for the withering earth...”

Gray eyes widened. Mineto!

"Hadou Forty-four, Hadou Forty-four. One Hundred Wooden Arrows.”

Arrows materialized in mid-air, raining down on the army of Hollows. But there was something funny going on here. Ilsa barely had time to register the fact that the arrowheads were glowing before they exploded, turning from a deadly hail to a hurricane of shrapnel.

How did he make them do that? A question for later. It was effective, and that was what counted.Tsubaki-taichou had evidently recovered from the Vasto Lorde’s strike and was whaling on him with her flaming hammer. Time for some more arcane power. "Stolen shadows, rod of enmity, cast forth and draw in.” Hope somebody’s got a nice big hadou ready.

"Bakudou number seventy-nine, Kuyou Shibari!”

If it's not in my color, it's not in my word count.

Kuyou Shibari
Kuyou Shibari (Nine Sunlight Traps) - Bakudou #79, 3000 Kidou

Description: Creates eight black holes that emit spiritual energy in the space surrounding the target. The combined pressure tugs the target in all directions, threatening to pull their body apart. A final black hole manifests in the center of the target's chest, tightening the hold. The first hadou cast while this spell is active will be drawn immediately and entirely to the bound target.

Please note that Ilsa cast this kidou AFTER Kyuketsu's Kokuryuha and Mitsu's One Hundred Wooden Arrows.

Division item used
Chomei - "Clarity"

Chomei is a thin silver chain made to be worn behind the ear. Optionally, it may be hung as an earring. The trinket is designed to detect and amplify audible incantations within a thirty-foot radius, allowing the user to clearly pick out the words of a kidou spell even if the caster is whispering or otherwise trying to hide the incantation.

It is still up to the user to recognize the spell, and Chomei cannot help against Eishouhaki ("Revocation of the Recited Poem").

People were shouting all around them. Tsubaki was calling for war, the anarchist was calling for everyone to come to her to escape once the senkaimon opened, and the healer was calling for everyone to get within the protective sphere. It was chaos, too many people giving orders and no one in charge. Then releases began exploding all over the place. Lesser ones buffeted him as powerful winds while those with bankai released power in tidal waves of force and strength.

Zakeriah staggered slightly against the waves, if anything, the fact that there were so many powers coming from so many differing directions helped keep him upright rather than bowling him over. His vision focused on the shrouded image of the Master before him and her mocking smile. Eyes flowed over the liquid shadow of her body and for a moment he though he saw fangs as well. It was as if she was becoming more solid, more real the longer she remained. He broke.his gaze on her. She was an illusion, he knew that, Iblis knew that, yet the primal part of his brain fwas awash with all of the love and terror she inspired in her pets.

'I will be rid of you. One day I will be rid of you.'

'We both will.' Iblis agreed silently. The zanpakutou spirit wasn't formulating words so much as lending the strength behind those thoughts. 'Take that fear, that desire, and that anger she wells within you and turn it against these creatures splayed before us. Let these thirsty sands drown in the blood of the hollows.'

No more motivation was needed; Zak launched himself forward through the specter and into the teeming lesser hollows. The Vasto Lords at that moment vanished in an apparent assault on the healer captain who had avoided the madness and whose soldier was breaking the hollow's hold over those close to him. The third seat tore instead into the teeming lesser hollows enslaved to the Lorde, as were a number of the other shinigami. Chains and sickles flailed wildly at his prey and cut the first few enemies down with ease. Crimson sprayed clouds into the moonlight air only to vanish against the unending thirst of the alabaster sands.

The spree did not last long; one of the Templar's chains was snagged and yanked hard before it could be given slack. He flew out of control and barely managed to twist around enough to catch the impending blow on his shield. It still sent him spinning away into the white sands while the shock numbed his arm for a moment of uselessness. At least the hollow hadn't held onto the chain and Zak pulled his face from the sand to look up at his attacker. Only the Master stood there grinning at him with her perfectly malicious smile. The sight of her gave him pause again but that moment allowed the hollow's humongous fist to shatter the shadow as it bore down the prone shinigami. Zak took this one full on as its force drove him into the sands.

The hollow hit him again and sand erupted all around them in a rolling shock wave, the thing was the size of a gorilla and thrice as heavy. The reaper tried to get up but the hollow fired an energy blast against his back driving further into the growing crater. Once again the hollow brought up its fist to smash down on the Templar and feel the visceral pleasure of bones snapping under its great strength when the chains of Iblis tore from the sands aglow with the color of the Third Seat's reiatsu. They lashed around the hollows upraised arm and, with the power only a machine could produce, smashed the grey colored thing into the ground. Zakeriah pushed himself up, the twin chains of his gauntlet hidden still in the sands where they had ambushed the foe, while the third in his left hand blazed angrily.

The hollow roared at the shinigami and pulled at the chains but found it was held fast, indeed it was slowly being pulled beneath the sands as the grains gradually have way to the pressure being placed upon them. "You fucking shit. You think you are anything?" Zak growled. The bruise colored reiatsu glow humming over his visible blade began to spark and became accented by a flickering blue flame that made the blade begin to appear slightly translucent. "We are Iblis. Chosen one of the Master. I am Zakeriah. Third seat of the Blood Templar. And unlike my Captain and many of my allies...I have not even begun to tap into my rei." He pulled his gauntlet back, the runes also blazing with reitsu from his techniques, while retracting the twin chains. The gears spun and released steam sparking with energy from their effort. The sickles on the ends of the chain sliced through the meaty arm and they slid around to loosen their strangle hold of the appendage and cleanly sliced it off as though the hollow's skin was naught but paper. The beast cried in a mixture of pain in rage.

Another charged Zak from the left side, the Templar brought the handled sickle up and drove the blade through the soft meat under the hollow's jaw. The blades thirsted, their cut causing them to glow more brightly and he had no intention of disappointing them. Without giving the smaller hollow time to realize it had been wounded he twisted toward the villain and brought his armored arm up and also into its chin not only driving the blade deeper but also sending the hollow flying into the air. Before it got more than a meter up he caught the chain attached to the embedded blade and snapped it back downward. The only sound from the airborne hollow was a loud crack as it sharply broke its ascent. At the same time the Templar violently brought him gauntlet down from having delivered the blow as the twin chains finished their sojourn through the sands and erupted in a great arch behind him. Before the hollow hit around the two sickles had flown around and sliced the hollow into three long strips.

The large one was back on its feet faster than Zak had expected and he had not yet turned back toward the creature. It delivered a backhand that hit his armor and this time sent the Templar flying back toward the ranks. There was nothing in the desert for him to latch his hooked weapons to so the Templar had no recourse but to hit the ground and skid backwards into a dune.

Power erupted once again from Tsubaki, he glanced to his side to see their queen crushing the Vasto Lorde beneath the weight of her mighty hammer. The blows were godly but less so with each successive attack. Her assaults were beyond devastating but clearly cost her dearly. Kidou erupted around the two powerhouses that Zak did not know (not that he knew any) but it was clearly a powerful spell. Part of him was angry, he wanted to taste the blood of a Lorde upon his blade but the main part of him knew that if that creature was a match for the Templar Queen then Zak himself was nothing to the demon. The large hollow was rushing again and the Third seat grinned darkly, his blades were aglow with power and they would only become more so as this fool battled him. Leaving the Lorde to those fit to challenge it he rushed back at his own attacker, if he could not be the sword that smote the great demon he would be a shield for the others.

Techs used
Blade of the Templar - The primary skill taught to every Blood Templar, Blade of the Templar fortifies the Zanpakuto into a more precise and dangerous force. The Templar may channel an exceedingly powerful aura into their weapon, regardless of the state of release. This manifests as an increase in physical attack strength and Zanjutsu proficiency proportionate to the amount of hits the Templar is able to deal in battle.

For each round that the Templar lands a hit, his zanjutsu increases by 2%, up to a maximum of 10%, until the end of battle. While active, the blade glows with the color of the user's reiatsu, growing brighter as it gets stronger.

The Devil's Teeth: Upon activation of this ability the blades begin to glow a spectral blue, become slightly hazy, and a wispy smoke arises from them, the runes engraved in his blade become black and remain weirdly solid in contrast to the blades themselves. The blades appear to become impossibly sharp and cut through most objects with ease. They are actually phasing rapidly between dimensions and this ability has a serious damaging affect on anything it touches. Because of the nature of the attack it can also damage supernatural barriers and shielding. This power costs 5% of his reiatsu per turn. If/when the weapons encounter a barrier this is factored at 10%.

They heavy waves of reiatsu that crashed down on the architect were not unnoticed, nor were they welcomed. With every release that settled on top of the last, the air was becoming stagnant and soon anyone who couldn’t fend off the powers with their own would collapse. Worst of all was Tsubaki’s power that seemed to fluctuate like a roaring volcano. Her power would settle and then without warning jump in a violent explosion that choked the Haresuno. The gods only know what it was doing to someone like the junior members of the Gotei.

As the discord played out, Haresuno noticed something that perhaps no one in the throes of battle did. The shinigami were being pushed apart.

Tsubaki! Haresuno practically shouted into Tenteikuura before he saw where she was at. She stood just before Makoto, her hammer kicking up the sands of Hueco Mundo with deafening strikes at empty sands. Ilsa and Kyuketsu stood a-ways back and the two of them let loose two powerful Kidou.

Kyuketsu’s devastating Kokuryuha howled across the sands, trailing behind the bar of energy his sword had unleashed. A black dragon coalesced from the ebony flames, it’s cruel maw opening to devour Tsubaki.

Foregoing his original plan, Haresuno moved.

In a blinding race of speed few could track, Haresuno threw himself up and forward. Of all before him perhaps only the vasto lorde was watching. Plums of sand burst behind each flash step that trailed behind Haresuno until he was suddenly standing between Tsubaki and the oncoming attacks.

His voice reflected words of power, creating a clone that broke away towards Kokuryuha as fast as it could move.

Haresuno jumped before the energy beam, his power rushing about him from it’s expenditure. "Psuedo Blade.” He commanded firstly of the arcane arts, only to follow with a strong bakudou, "Kaiousei no Tate!”

While the celestial blade began it’s materialization, the tall death god brought forward a single palm, focusing his reiatsu there as his fingers rolled through the air. The scarce water that floated around Hueco Mundo converged before his out-stretched palm.

The splitting beam of power slammed heavily against the wall of water, denying it passage momentarily, but to Haresuno’s horror it started tearing through his kidou.

"Four corners of the ocean,” he recited out loud, "the king's trident strikes the surface of the pool.” Energy flowed out of him and into his bakudou, he could feel it strengthen, but alas it did not halt the powerful attack’s advance. It only slowed it. "The drops all gather at the lowest point, throw the pebble and it will bounce forever. Bakudou Number Fifty-Nine!”

Even with his reinforced bakudou, the attack was pushing through. He could only hope that he had stalled long enough for the Templar Queen to get away.

Haresuno dropped the bakudou.

The blazing light of Reijuu’s attack cut clean through the wall of water, and then through Haresuno, traveling on past him and towards its designated target.

But as the light of his beam faded, and Kokuryuha advanced, the adept was still standing, mere inches from the oncoming kidou.

I know why you are no longer rampant, he thought.

The air around Haresuno’s raised hand began to waver. It danced like the heat of an open flame while something beneath his skin started to squirm. Black veins wormed their way to the surface of Haresuno’s hand, covering it from palm to fingertip, front to back. Dark knots worked into thorns, revealing that they were not veins, but thorned vines that consumed his hand.

The faux-blade came up just as Kokuryuha slammed against Haresuno. Power seeped from the kidou as it tried to push past him. Only then was it that he realized something. Heishuu Ryuou would not do it. Quickly working his reiatsu, the unseated shinigami flooded his twisted power to the area around him, dissolving any weak magic that was around him, and severely weakening the more powerful ones.

In a simple downward slash against the current of the now weak Kokuryuha, Haresuno channeled power into the blade, growling, "Ittouryoudan.”

The reiatsu swept out from his blade, racing along the length of the black dragon until nothing was left.

Dust swirled and settled around Haresuno as his cobalt eyes looked back at the two vice-captains. Letting his voice carry across the thread of Tenteikurra, Haresuno spoke aloud, "Everyone needs to regroup so we can leave. Gather everyone up, let the hollows advance. Defensive posture only, do not attack. We are retreating.”

He might not have been the strongest, and no-where near the highest in rank, but he was the only one who was at full strength, and perhaps the only one fit to hold off the vasto lorde.

Okay, so clusterfuck feel is clusterfuck feel. Let's make some sense and wrap this up, no? Tsubaki attacked the VL as it was near Makoto, and both Kyuketsu and Ilsa launched lvl 70 kidou at it (and Nick's energy beam of doom), but Tsu would be in the way of their attacks and we have no idea wtf is happening with every one. Hare's been outside this battle for long enough so he can step in and round you all up to gtfo. Whoever had Tentei to Hare before hears him if they're not in the immediate area.

Haresuno used his negation reiatsu and Ittouryoudan to stop Kokuryuha, unfortunately it also hits any other spells or techs being used within 10m of him.

Any questions, complaints, gripes, can all be addressed to me as you all see fit. Editing as necessary.

Hitei Reiatsu

[Hitei Reiatsu] - "Negation Spirit Pressure"
[Unique]

Haresuno has been, much to his dissatisfaction, at the receiving end of too many powerful attacks. Many of which have been wrought through the mystical powers of reiatsu, only then to be unleashed upon him.

In a much needed attempt to deter such events in the future, Haresuno’s own reiatsu took on a unique property after some prodding. He has learned through trial and error that for the cost of 4% his overall reiatsu he is able to use his reiatsu to weaken, or even nullify, techniques up to the that amount.

This effect will hit techniques within 10m of Haresuno. After each use, Haresuno must wait two turns before activating the ability once more.

They continued on, with more havoc than ever. Her eyes could barely follow everyone's movements upon the sandy terrain, nor could she even comprehend what exactly they were doing. But, there was perhaps a more blatant affair that caught her attention. The Senkaimon, their salvation, finally opened up its doors for them. The very door which brought them here to these alabaster sands came up once more, its familiar white light glowing like a mirror, waiting only to be passed through.

There was the impending peril though. It was so large, and the diminutive hollows could easily pass through easily, if the troop fails to keep them all at bay. The placing was a little awkward -- it stood gloriously at quite a distance from the hollows, but it also meant farther from the shinigami.

"Everyone! Get inside the Senkaimon, quick!" Yuurei bellowed, still jumping up and down to catch everyone's attention, "Get in or defend the door!" She flailed her arms about, hoping to at least catch attention of those shinigami near her. All of them were occupied but somehow, someone needs to notice.

It all took a toll in her throat as the noise produced by the massive fray drowned her voice, but she did not give up. "I repeat! Head to the Senkaimon immediately or defend the door from intruders!"

Well at least, if they failed to hear her voice amidst the ruckus, they could see the door. That much should give the hint.

The waves of reiatsu that thundered out from the powerful shinigami wailing on the vasto lorde were slamming Udo to the ground and keeping him there. As the spell-blade’s strength gradually faded, salvation arrived...sort of. When the latest reaper joined the fray, every attack was cut down, giving Udo room to catch his breath. However, the same power that did this also dispelled the Chiyudou that calmed him and the attack stored in his blade.

With the best timing imaginable, a Senkaimon opened in the distance. A particularly quick medic, clearly chosen carefully for this mission, reached Seitaro in a few short bursts of speed. Speaking at the speed of a rapper, the young man incanted, "Strapped by the air, bound by earth - brought to salvation by blood. Rejoice! Chiyudou no San, Stretcher.”

Just like that, the stabilized vice-captain was lifted off the ground by a plate of glassy radiance, and the medic started walking back to the Senkaimon, very gradually picking up speed, to deliver his charge as quickly as possible without dropping him. Udo picked himself up and completed the trio, a medic on the right, a patient in the middle, and an escort on the left. Now these three had to survive the walk into a jog into a run across the white sands of Hueco Mundo to the relative safety of Soul Society.

As the battle shifted for both sides, Ryoujin noticed the Senkaimon portal opening overhead. Just beyond that door was sanctity within Soul Society; however, nothing came easily. Such a notion was becoming more apparent as multitudes of shinigami sought to flee the fight. If it were that simple, then there would be no reason to worry. The fact that Tsubaki had exploded her wrath upon the enemy was evidence enough. The Vasto Lorde, which he couldn't make out amongst all of the chaos going on around the center of the conflict, or the hollows for that matter weren't going to let them depart so easily.

Noticing a familiar boy from the Eleventh that had tripped, Ryoujin offered to help him up.

"Go, ask questions later."

"A-a-aren't you coming?" the unseated officer stammered only to receive a push forward from the pink-haired youth. Noticing the flare in the co-third seat's remaining spiritual pressure, the boy merely nodded and ran to join the Arcanist who was in charge of communications.

Now then... where are you Kyuketsu? Ryoujin thought, scanning the vicinity around him before he spotted the vice-captain ahead.

Appearing in a flash step within earshot of the light-blue haired swordsman, Ryoujin refrained from lethally attacking the hollows that were approaching. Standing, with his back faced away from Kyuketsu, he merely countered the blows that were coming his way as best as he could.

"I usually just roll with the punches," he began, wincing, "but I've got a bad feeling about this, Kyuketsu. As much as I would love to say retreating is the best option, do you think it's wise to open up that portal like that? Wouldn't this just allow the vasto lorde to enter Soul Society as well? Not to mention that huge army of hollows serving it. That guy from the First too... he's intent on leading the retreat, but to do that alone, that's just asking for a death note. Those of us with captain-classed reiatsu need to stall for time for the others to pass through."

Pausing as a claw grazed his cheek, Ryoujin kicked the offender responsible back.

"Tsubaki always told us not to be heroes, and if ya ask me, none of us are fighting as an Army should. Even if the Central 46 are a bunch of retarded geezers, we're not. We're the Gotei for god's sakes."

[ 1159 ]

yep
Those with a lower amount of rei should probably be the first to try and pass through, just saying.

The unfamiliar sensation of fear that stymied Kurohashi's bloodlust hadn't been enough to keep him from battle. Although he had clearly been distracted by the torrent of voices in his head, the walker staggered forward. The ominous figure rose up slowly and tilted his head to the side, an eerie cracking in his neck precluding the walker’s attack. Warily stepping into the dull sands again, the lanky reaper swung his tattered zanpakutou against the mask of a flailing hollow. The demon burst into a haze of charcoal dust and dissipated into the night air.

Kurohashi slashed his blade hesitantly against the horde of tortured souls. Suddenly, the weight of the Captains and the Vasto Lorde came crashing down on the reaper. His unencumbered swings became sluggish and labored. He let out an anguished grunt and threw a second hand to his hilt. Raising it overhead, the looming figure grappled with the weight of the air around him as he tried to carry the blade downward. One hollow had almost stretched its gaping maw out just enough to snap down on the walker but the steel blade just barely landed its blow. The sword came crashing down on the alabaster mask, slamming it into the sands but the force was barely enough to crack the bone-like surface.

A smaller hollow sprang from behind, pouncing onto the back of the Death God. It chomped down on the reaper’s shoulder, spraying a small gush of blood through its jagged teeth. As the walker grabbed a hold of the small one teething his flesh, another hollow slashed at the man’s chest. The claws swiped across the shihakushou and dug into the surface of skin below. Kurohashi threw the petite hollow against the beast before him and fell to a knee. He lifted his zanpakutou and stammered back, trying to keep steady amongst the crushing energy. The frenzied beasts were too overwhelming and as they kept thrashing about, the enraged demons soon overtook Kurohashi.

The shinigami had entirely disappeared beneath their writhing black masses.

A surge of reiatsu erupted from the dog-pile of hollow and the swarming demons suddenly erupted. The monsters were knocked back and Kurohashi, bloodied and heaving, stood hunched over in the tattered remains of his black uniform. The silent warrior stumbled forward, trying to reach the group again. Another hollow launched toward the reaper but Kurohashi shoved his blade upward, stabbing it through the beast’s belly. He carried the monstrosity overhead and down on its back before mounting the demon and grabbing hold of its mask. Kurohashi gripped the white plate firmly, staring down at the hollow with large, bloodshot eyes. Rearing back, the walker ripped the mask away from the demon and listened to the shrill cries. The beast burst into fading shards of reiatsu and the reaper came to his feet again.

Grabbing hold of his blade, the wary Death God looked forward as the bright glow of the Senkaimon came into sight. He bounded forward, alabaster trophy in hand until, finally, he came upon the rest of the shinigami. The orders and screams of the warriors around him faded into silence as the bloodied Kurohashi collapsed in a moment of fear-induced, battle-worn exhaustion.

A couple of notes from Makoto:

1) Uh...I don't remember calling for anyone to get beneath the barrier...not yet, at least. Perhaps a certain someone behind the fourth wall is hallucinating too...
2) GDI people, stop half-killing your NPCs here (completely kill them)! I don't mind tending to PCs in this kind of situation, but we're wasting a captain class fighter (the one who can actually see what the hell is going on!) on dang NPC rapeage. C'mon man! (0:41-0:50)

Hazel eyes widened in horror; his warning was too little, too late.

"Tsubaki, no!” the healer shouted. The Templar Queen’s ferocious black flames flickered and died, a dubious indicator of the woman’s state. Purpose suddenly returned to life within the nobleman. No could no longer remain within the barrier of his own creation. Tsubaki could not be allowed to fall here.

But prior to taking even one step to come to the injured warrior’s aid, Makoto found himself face to... tentacle with the vasto lorde. The cold and clammy appendage made contact with his forehead and for all intents and purposes bisected the captain’s cranium with a blinding pain. "Go mad,” he somehow heard the beast say through shear agony. But just after his head split seemingly in two, there was nothing more.

"Huh,” the nobleman said, blinking stupidly with a slack-jawed expression. His eyes were brought back to focus and quickly fell upon the form of the great hollow. But instead of finding the fiend mere feet away, it was located just outside of Makoto’s bankai. Apparently the barrier had done its job and prevented the being’s access to his person, but this did not make him immune to the grips of its manipulation of madness.

Then out of nowhere came a blaze of familiar reiatsu as the embers of Tsubaki’s abyssal flames rekindled and roared to life. Along with the return of the Templar Queen’s presence came a renewed onslaught from the apparently unbreakable woman. Carried on the winds of a blinding flash step, the Captain of the Eleventh was behind it, delivering hammer blow after hammer blow—

—Makoto blinked again and had to think about what he was really seeing. In reality, the first of Tsubaki’s strikes had indeed landed true, but after that each blow only fell with a thud on the white sands before her.

"Damn it, enough of this,” the healer captain growled. "Blinded by a great flash, wounded by a horrendous slash, burned by a roaring fire, frustrated by a great ire, whatever the world may put forth, the spirit will persevere....”

Though the hairs on the nobleman’s neck stood on end as attack after attack from his fellow shinigami raced towards him, Makoto remained focused, concentration on casting the spell that would fortify the momentary clarity Placebo had provided him.

"Underneath the torrent of hardships, seek the strength and fortitude to carry on....”

The attacks that were once on a crash course for Shinka Kainyuu’s barrier were deflected, negated even, by... who was that? It was the supplicant from the taishuu he’d left what seemed like ages ago: Haresuno.

"Chiyudou number seventy-two, Immunization.”

When at last the unwieldy spell was completed, Makoto’s mind—which had been wavering between madness and sanity—was cleared once more. With the aid of Immunization, the Placebo he cast earlier would now keep his mind strong for much longer. And a strong mind was most definitely necessary right now. Chaos was continuing to reign supreme on the field. They were all being separated and thinned out. The force was being manipulated far too easily.

"Shinigami of the Gotei Thirteen, keep your wits about you! Templars, remember Tokyo! Fall into the tortoise formation. Able bodies to the outside, spell casters and the injured to the interior! Stay together, work together. And for the love of God, disregard that annoying voice that keeps yapping about a Senkaimon! There is no, Senkaimon yet.”
