[PM][Open] Week 240: Walled In

“I know, Mabara-san, and part of me still wants to cling onto that false sense of hope that he was indeed the man I used to know, but...” By now Nana had come back from her ‘how’s it going’ inspection up front and had appeared right next to Tsubaki again, making sure her words only reached her, “Can you really tell me face to face that he was the man he once was? That he was the man I’ve seen grow up to not become just a fine Captain, but first also a vice-captain of the Third?

“Don’t think for a second that I don’t know, because I do, and that’s what pains me the most. I try to look further than a ‘Kyuu’ and a ‘Theron’, but I cannot. Where there is supposed to be black and white between the two personas, there is only gray for me.

“Had it not come to what it had with the three of you, I might’ve learned to overcome this sense of finality, but now that he is no longer with us... I can only look back on what I saw, on what I know, and not on what might have been...”

A single tear fell from the noblewoman’s right eye as she said the words.

Ketch, Thread, thanks for posting.
Might as well toss some much needed dramarevelations in there, no?

"No. No I don't imagine he was the man you knew, but I can guess you already knew that." Her tone remained a somber one. The loss of Theron Ascania was on her hands more than anyone, a fact that was far from lost on Tsubaki.

"Ascania was a monster, just like we all someday become. It didn't have a thing to do with him being a Vizard, or with how his life ended." She skirted a quick glance to the Vice-Captain, letting her know the topic of conversation was no longer restricted in instance to the man she had once called her superior officer. "From the very first day you pick up the mantle of Shinigami, the person you knew, the friend you once shared laughter and secrets with, is gone."

"We are all monsters, Amaterasu. We begin as fledglings, learning what it is and what it means to fight, to kill. We do it to protect, to safeguard the balance. The creatures we kill do the same to protect their broods, to keep our numbers from overwhelming their own. It is a tug of war that began eons before Ascania, and will continue until the balance is lost, either when the soldiers outnumber the creatures...or when the last Shinigami falls."

"We are all monsters, and we all kill for what we deem the right cause. It doesn't matter your methods or morals, our job is to take life...a job people like Theron Ascania and myself became exceedingly adept at." She paused, realizing for a moment that she had accidentally spoken of herself in the past tense, as though the woman reciting the words was already dead as well. Cold feeling, that.

"There is good in you, but there is still darkness, bad, evil...whatever you want to label it with. We do not resign. We do not retire, Nana. Hollows do not hang up their fangs and claws in old age, content to rest their laurels and think back on the carnage of their past." She managed a weak smile, but it wasn't fooling anyone.

"Monsters fight, and monsters kill until the day that we die. Even the very good monsters. You will learn like I did, that black and white are lies. Illusions created by the enfeebling needs of our own consciences and sanity. I have lost my conscience, many would argue my sanity never existed. I have lost my station and my credibility among my fellow monsters." The twin leonine irises that used to burn with unquenchable fire looked at the girl with only embers, smoldering ghosts of the past that were a piteous thing to compare.

"What could have been is irrelevant, nothing more than cold comfort from the senses of guilt or a war of conscience. Those senses will kill you. Theron Ascania knew that, from the very moment he ceased to be the leader of the Blitzkreig to transform into the Herald of Death. He embraced his name because it meant finality for himself as much as those he held a blade in opposition to."

She managed a chuckle that couldn't have been more self-mocking if she tried. Fatigue, in every sense of the word permeated the sound, invoking a weary acknowledgment where laughter should have followed.

"I am a monster just as he was, as Inuzuri is, as each and every one of us are. Wealth can be gained, spent, and lost, then regained again in a moment's turn. Titles are granted, stripped, and returned...in the end they mean just as little as those who bestow them. There is only one true thing in our world that can be lost, and that is life."

She managed the same weak smile, returning the sisterly pat on Nana's shoulder.

"He lived well, he fought well, and he died well. In death we paint those we admire in the kindest color, knowing that they will never return. We make them what we need them to be to endure, to keep pushing on without them there. The day he died Theron Ascania became the Herald of Death for me, holding a blade against my own and calling for my blood."

The woman's voice grew distant, knowing that the words to follow may not have meant anything to any other soul save her own. But that was her truth, and the opinions and thoughts of others would never sway that.

"My death knell has been rung, and in a time very soon I will join him." The distant tone emboldened, imbued for the most fleeting of moments with the righteous fire and zealotry that had made her feared. Made her respected....made her a Captain. "That being said I intend to use my remaining time to fight as he did, to live as he did, and meet him at death's door every bit the monster he ever was."

[Fuck y'all I want a wordy turn too]

The cold embrace of darkness loosened its grip on Okamii Igasho and shuffled him into a pale light. The soul reaper realized he was standing, only after the weight of his body started to collapse against the smooth, transparent surface. Taking a deep breath, the removed assassin let his eyes glance down to his chest, where a hand slipped beneath the fold his kosode and searched for a stab wound. Gazing at his wound-free flesh, the prisoner’s earlier assumptions were confirmed – the realms in which they had been placed and the opponents they had faced were only shadows of a false reality.

At least, it seemed that way.

There was still no way of being entirely sure that the dark room and the glass prison weren’t simply another manifestation of Raifuku’s power or imagination. Tracing his hand across the glass, Igasho’s fingertips ran over a hairline fracture in the plate’s surface. Pressing firmly against it, the Death God looked out into the darkness, looking for any signs of life that he might find, but there seemed to be little more than shadow and a faint beam of light in the center of the room.

The burly warrior pounded his fist against the glass, feeling the resistance of the reinforced glass, testing the durability of the clear walls. Another slam against the glass, with more power, sent the vibrations back into the man’s arm. Leaning back in the confined space, Igasho looked around again before focusing on the crack in the glass. Releasing a series of open-palm strikes against the weakened wall, Igasho let each slam gain momentum with his strength, reiatsu pulsing within the case. The crack split along the wall and, within a few moments, the glass shattered and fell to the shadowy floor.

Igasho stepped out into the arid room, pausing for a moment to look around. The glass cases that could be seen around the dark room were holding a few others within while others had been broken as well. The trail of reiatsu that still lingered in the air gave the burly warrior the feeling that the crack in his own cell had been left by the raw power of those who had already broken free. Momentarily considering breaking the others free, the assassin realized the amount of energy he’d have to expend, not even sure it wouldn’t be in vain.
Turning to follow the traces of the other shinigami, Igasho considered Kago’s words and ran forward, determined to find any others that could bring the games to an end.

sup.

Had death already claimed him and the countless others before him? The only things he was really sure about was that Kyuketsu and Ilsa had already advanced to the next room and to what he assumed to be the final stages of Raifuku's game. Meanwhile, the human that had tamed the tigers was killed, and he couldn't discern what had happened to Yuurei nor Yukiko. The desolated and ravaged canyons including his other surroundings may as well have been nonexistent as well. All he could really do at the moment was to try and relax his breathing.

Even if he was still alive, the Acting Captain, despite not intending to kill him, sure had damaged him a great deal, almost to the point where it could prove to be life-threatening if he lied here untreated in his own pool of blood for too long. For the first time in all of his confrontations with Kyuketsu, his friend had genuinely defeated him instead of their regular stalemates. The worst part of it all was the psychological damage that it was doing to his normally carefree demeanor. For once in his life, he was utterly annoyed and frustrated at his own weaknesses and at Raifuku for orchestrating all of this. The mastermind had originally told him that the others were jealous of the fact that he had somehow ignorantly managed to break free from Prometheus's curse, but now ironically, he was the one that envied them - well rather, he envied those that were still apart of this competition. While he initially had no purpose or goal to play by Raifuku's rules, that had undoubtedly changed over the course of his stay at Dunan.

Perhaps, that could have been the reason why he was apparently being given another chance. As a strong pulse of reaitsu coursed through his body, he found himself to be in a cavern. His wounds for the most part seemed to have healed up, and just faintly, he could make out the silohouettes of six other figures. While normally it'd be advisable to proceed with caution, the pink-haired third seater confronted the group directly, only to realize that it was none other than familiar faces whom were all comrades. As his auburn gaze swept from Lilith, Ishin, a fairly silent Mystic, Nana, Manzou, he seemed to wonder if they had fallen to the same fate as him and had apparently cheated death. And then, he noticed ebony tresses and the leonine irises that hadn't seemed to take stock of him just yet. Smirking at his luck that would surely turn in to misfortune at any moment, Arashi Ryoujin revealed himself to the others, just in time to catch Tsubaki's last statements.

"Don't go dying on me just yet. Before that can happen Tsubaki, we'll have to give ya a proper homecoming."

When she had walked through those doors over what seemed like ages, branded a traitor with no hope of ever returning back to the ranks of the Goteijuusantai, he hadn't been able to say anything to her which could potentially give off the sign that he was careless, that the Templar Queen had meant nothing him. To his credit though, that was far from the case.

Unfortunately, while he did have a wide array of topics that he would have gladly enjoyed conversing with Tsubaki about, their reunion would have to be cut short.

"I hate being the bearer of bad news, but I guess before we can start being all optimistic and all about this, we should probably hurry up. I crossed paths with Raifuku again earlier, well a projection of him, and let's just say the rules to his little game have changed. Having one kanji isn't enough to leave and enter another room. You need at least two."

“Then I will do that which he could not accomplish, that which he could not see with tainted eyes,” Nana began as she softly acknowledged Ryoujin’s appearance, “I will take that feeling of yours, Mabara-san, I will take all of your feelings, I will take your very life and protect it until the end.

“I will not stand by idly as you toss yourself in front of a battle long lost, or anyone for that matter. I will forge a new division from the ashes Ascania-san left behind, I will become a vanguard of those who have fallen.

“And you will come home with us.”

For an instant Nana's words fell on deafened ears, senses too blinded by fury to tell the Vice-Captain had been speaking...let alone that it be comprehended.

The diminutive former Captain spun on her right heel, bringing her body and raised right hand about in one flawless, fluid motion. However before the open-palm smack was thrown, she stopped.

"Homecoming." It left her lips like an insult, more spat than spoken. "Yes. Take me home, Arashi. Take me home to the hundreds of people who are sick to death of me. To the men and women who are tired of me trying to fight for them." Just as quickly as it had been frozen in mid-motion, the open hand fell to her side accompanied by an expression of barely contained tears and furor.

"It has been a joy, an absolute joy to be in exile. Cut off from everyone, EVERYONE-" She sharpened in tone and volume for a brief second, almost fully capturing the boy's attention anew. "-I love. But I still hear them. Every thought. Every word they speak while I'm gone. Not one. Not two. Hundreds. Hundreds every second of every day. I hear them all. They are all tired of me. Tired of me trying to protect them. Trying to stop horrible things and horrible beings from coming to them."

"You are one of them now. And I have no home to return to."

Before the tears had a moment to finally bloom she spun on one heel just as quickly as before, speeding up her pace and momentarily leaving both the Third Seat and the Vice-Captain behind.

TL;DR
Yes, I still keep up on the 11th's writing. OOC I'm not mad at all. IC....yeah. She mad.

Igasho made his way down the dim hallway, sheathed zanpakuto in hand, as he came closer to the resonating energy traces. Voices carried in the darkness, tones of stress or disagreement echoing with their words while the prisoner approached. The silent blade slid from the casing as the assassin came to see the figures of several shinigami up ahead. Although unsure of where he or the others were going, Igasho could tell that they had been moving forward with a purpose.

“Forgive the informality,” he called out from behind the group, “but I need to know that you are all really here.” Looking down momentarily at his own mark-free hand, the burly warrior asked, “Do any of you have kanji on your hands?”

123

Quickly turning towards the source of the voice, the pink-haired youth held his hand out for the former assassin to see.

"The minute I broke free from my glass encasing, my kanji disappeared altogether. In fact, the moment I was defeated it was gone," he explained. At any other moment, he would have been glad to see that Igasho was doing well, but Tsubaki's words had struck a chord. Before she could gain too much distance on him, he appeared right in front of her in a flash, halting her from moving any further.

"I can understand why you feel that way, but I don't know if I should be insulted or not that you would place me into that category even if it were totally true. If that is what you truly think," Ryoujin began, knowing full well that Tsubaki knew that she could never hope to outpace him or Amaterasu Nana even if she really tried to, "Then you're an idiot, Tsubaki."

Although his words came out to be harsher than he would have liked and very well could have been considered a dereliction of rank, she was technically not his Captain at the moment, though even if she were, it would be all the same. His intake on things hadn't changed, as much as Tsubaki was convinced that it had, and he was undoubtedly not going to allow her to carry such a misplaced notion especially at Dunan, where he knew that an enemy could cross their paths at any given time, whether it was someone who had disappeared a long time ago or someone from the present.

"I won't lie though, and say that you're not totally wrong, but only part of your accusation is right. We are tired of you always protecting us, but don't get that confused. We aren't tired of you. Your self sacrifice and devotion for the division and your family is noble. In fact, I don't think there's a single soul in all of Soul Society that can argue that.

"We're not tired of you, Tsubaki. We're merely growing up. It's time to fight our own battles at times.

"And more importantly it's our turn to protect you."

“I do not necessarily believe they tire of you as much as you believe them to Mabara-san,” Nana responded in a soft and soothing voice as she caught back up to the former Captain of the Eleventh. “And although there are always the exceptions, and it may not even seem like it, I think it has more to do with you putting yourself in compromising situations while trying to protect them that tires them out.

“It is as Arashi-san said, they too are growing up, they too are reaching a point where they can do what you set out to do. Cut them some slack, Mabara-san, the Goteijuusantai is not the same without you, but you can’t win every single person’s heart.

“Yes some may feel ‘happy’ that you are gone, some may even feel ecstatic, but are those really the persons who know you? Are those really members of your division to which you can say ‘Yes, I singlehandedly taught them everything they now know, and they know all there is to know about me’? Because I highly doubt that.

“The people who think they are better off without you are idiots, those who think you should stop protecting them even bigger idiots. But remember what I said? Your actions speak very loud words. So loud in fact that it often times hurts you more than it hurts anyone else.

“Anyway, Arashi-san, Mabara-san...” There was a moment of silence as Nana’s gaze met Lilith’s for a split second, “we are not here to bicker, and I suggest we keep any animosity until after we deal with Raifuku. We’re not here to spite you, Mabara-san.”

[275/2495]

And I thought I had a thing for the overly dramatic.

Igasho was relieved by the templar’s words, knowing he could relatively trust the pink-haired man, whom he had worked with before. Leaving no time to consider their situation to be a false reality, the prisoner couldn’t help but show some hint of an irate reaction to their conversation.

“Is this really what you’ve been discussing?” The question was toned with disbelief, fully aware of the power of his comrades but somewhat staggered by the overheard topic. “Does anyone even know how long we’ve been here?” As the removed assassin approached the group, his eyes met Lilith’s, which calmed his demeanor, knowing that she, more than anyone there, would be well aware of the urgency in their situation.

The polished steel of the zanpakuto glimmered with the dim light that seeped into the hallway, turned outward in the warrior’s hand, like a wolf bearing its teeth. Getting to the point, the burly reaper trailed Nana’s thoughts with his own.

“Kago freed me from Raifuku’s trance, confirming my suspicions that we had been manipulated but, before he did, he said we needed to gather as many people together as possible in order to find Raifuku.”

The shinigami looked at those before him, his eyes connecting with each one briefly. Continuing in a matter-of-fact tone, the stoic spoke, “The problem with that is trying to understand if Raifuku has anticipated this.” Turning to glance back in the direction from which he came, the man continued, “That glass was strong but it wasn’t impossible to break – its only logical that anyone able to break free would try to find Raifuku. Both of those facts are something we have to consider a man as intelligent as Rafuku would consider.”

“While I appreciate you stating the most painstakingly of obvious facts, Ookami-san, I would like it if you did not make us out to be complete morons.” Her tone was perhaps a bit harsher than she had wanted it to be, but when all had been said and done she wasn’t about to let someone who had absolutely no clue about what had been going on to take a standpoint that made zero sense.

“You were not manipulated,” she continued, making it sound as if Igasho was somewhat of a lunatic, “we were not manipulated. That is a misconception, what you saw was a reality of its own. Not a manipulation. Not a trance, but a truth in and out of itself.

“And while I appreciate Takimoto-fukutaichou’s notion to gather as many able shinigami as we possibly can, I strongly disapprove. Because the more man we have, the higher the risks of something going wrong.

“We are already a too large a group as is, but it’ll have to suffice for now. In the meantime, I hope you’ll listen well to what I say or we may have a problem.”

[190/2685]

In case it wasn't obvious yet, Nana is taking charge.

Get your final turns in before Saturday night.

The former assassin took no concern in the woman’s tone, almost appreciating her grounded nature in handling his opinion.

“I wouldn’t mention it if I wasn’t concerned. It looks as if you all are following the most obvious path – I don’t think it unreasonable to question it for everyone’s safety. Raifuku is cunning and will have our steps accounted for...but I do agree with you about gathering together.”

Looking down at Nana, the reaper asked, “Do you suggest we split up or stay together?”

"I think I could find at least fory-six willing to argue, Arashi." Nothing. No reaction whatsoever to the 'pep talk.' If anything had gotten through she wasn't showing it. Or was it something different? In a sense, it was.

The people trying to convince her of error were in error themselves.

She stepped around him, pausing neither in stride or speech. "The only thing waiting for me in Soul Society is the Sokyoku, and if either of you believe otherwise you're bigger idiots than me." She spun, continuing to walk in reverse without suffering in pace. "What do you think, really? That we're going to go back and everything will be sunshine and rainbows? Tch." She scoffed, never looking away from Arashi's own gaze while doing so.

"I knew when I started this it was a one-way ticket. Either by public execution or by a knife from the shadows. I know where my purpose lies. I know who I am. What I am meant to do." She turned to face the direction she was moving in once again, letting her thoughts slowly seethe into place.

It doesn't matter what you think, any of you. He called, and I will answer.

The next thought echoed directly in time with the thoughts of the co-Third Seat.

And if you pull that Shunpo stunt again I'm going to break your goddamn legs.

[229/2,272]

Ryoujin laughed. She knew all of these things, but yet, she didn't know a single thing about them or at least had given no indication that she still remembered.

He knew a threat, and while very uncharacteristic of how Tsubaki usually acted around him, he could discern the venom behind her warning. This was not the Templar Queen that he knew, and to be quite honest, the pink-haired youth wasn't really too keen of it all, but what could you really do?

"No one said that it was going to be easy. It never was and never will be. If you believe that I think otherwise, then you've really forgotten who I am," he said, leaving it at that. Perhaps, after his tenure thus far in the Eleventh, he had always had certain expectations, and having never seen this other side to the ebony-haired woman could have resulted in his discontent. Again, she had implicitly placed a label on him as if she didn't even know who he was, but now wasn't the time and place to bring personal matters into this. He had joined forces with them to begin with to find this control room that they were searching for, and that was exaclty what he was going to do.

[ 1211 Final ]

There was a long yet soft sigh as Nana shook her head softly, checked in on Lilith to hear that they had almost arrived, and turned her head back to Tsubaki and Ryoujin. “Suit yourself, Mabara-san. Keep living this lie you’ve been telling yourself, because if you really want to know what I think...

“I think you’re scared, afraid of the consequences. What if everyone really think it’s better for you to be gone? What if they really never liked you? What if they’re really sick of you? Seriously, what happened to the woman who despite overwhelming odds pressed forth regardless?

“Why are you hesitating?” There was a moment of silence as Nana shook her head another time, moving to the front of the group, her back for the first time facing towards Tsubaki, “I guess if our words can’t get through that thick skull of yours, no manner of words will. Do what you must, Mabara-san. Stay, leave, run amok, get yourself killed, whatever suits your fancy.

“I just hope it’s worth it in the end, because right now... you’re hard on your way to rid yourself of the respect I have for you.

"At any rate,” she continued facing back to Igasho, "we stay together."

[210/2900]

One or two more turns and I'm getting this thing closed.

"And if your respect is really that fickle and flimsy it isn't worth trying to win back." She started forward slowly, stopping at the Vice-Captain's side and whispering lightly in her ear.

"This place, this test, none of it cares about respect. These beasts will tear you apart, leave you as nothing more than a red stain. You think they care? No. No, Vice-Captain Amaterasu, you respect yourself and leave it at that. My own self worth will not let me apologize to you, to beg you to reconsider and admire me once again. And even if it could, would you still respect me knowing that I begged and pleaded to gain something back so insubstantial?"

She leaned away, continuing to walk down the winding path unhindered. "We fight, and we win. Or we die. And if we are to die then we take as many of them with us as possible, to sour their win. No respect, no creeds or codes, no fluff."

She turned suddenly, looking the woman dead in the eye.

"I am going to press on, not only because I am the woman they knew and feared...but because it's my job. Yours too, whenever you get tired of playing philosopher." With an eerily out of place smile she turned her back to the noble yet again, walking forward while whittling away at her own thoughts.

You need to wake up, Nana. I can show you the way to master the tempest a thousand times, but as you are now? Your mind would stop you before I ever could.

[262/2,534 Final]

Silently acknowledging the noble-woman’s suggestion, the prisoner moved forward, ready to find Raifuku. The stoic turned an eye from Nana, internalizing his displeasure with the ongoing conversation but was momentarily intrigued by Tsubaki’s words. Although he could clearly see the difference between the two women, Igasho immediately came to appreciate the rogue’s resolve, having only heard of her nature through whispers amongst the Gotei.

Standing above the others, the burly Death God walked ahead, saying nothing else, and kept his blade in hand. Although the reaper could sense that his power was dwarfed by those he accompanied, he eagerly moved forward and the shadows of Dunan welcomed the former assassin.

110/1025

For a moment she stood there in silence, still and unmoving as she listened to Tsubaki treating her like a child again, treating everyone like a child really. She wanted to call her out to her self-entitlement, the ridiculous notion that she was some type of motherly figure trying her best to save everyone.

Especially the ones who didn’t need saving.

She wanted to punch her, to kick her, to throw her against a wall and tell what she really thought, but she couldn’t. She wouldn’t. Not as she watched Manzou trying his hardest to fade from existence, not after what happened with Hisoka nearly twice now. Not after listening to Ryoujin’s plea, and especially not after having to deal with a prisoner who seemed to know it better than all of them combined.

The only two she could relate to right now where Lilith and Ishin, but only because the two of them had kept to themselves.

Instead, as she slowly began to walk forward again, she spoke only three words... and only loud enough for Tsubaki to hear them, “I am sorry.” However, before a response could be given they reached a dead-end.

The control room... she thought to herself as she suddenly appeared in front of the group, Murakumo unsheathed and released in its wind-state.

Bringing the blade up to the right corner of the ‘entrance’ she was going to create, she sliced it downwards to the bottom left, and did the same from top left to bottom right. Though the blade had cut right through the stone she still needed someone to apply a powerful enough force on the center-point to have it break.

Turning to Lilith she motioned for the cross-shaped point. The only response she got was a soft nod as the Mystic’s captain moved forward, placed her fist on the center-point and punched a hole right through it, caving in the rest as well.

Before Lilith herself could step into the control room, Nana had already dashed forward.

[335/3235 Final]

*sigh* You guys.
