Normally, I am not one to make a recommendation on anime because I can be lenient on quality of animation and story in general as someone who can appreciate even the most basic of stories and sometimes what I like might not be everyone else’s cup of tea. However, Sentenced to Be a Hero with just its first double length episode has left quite an impression on me. There is so much I can praise about it that I feel almost compelled to say in its favor.
The animation is very high quality with some computer-generated effects as is more common in anime these days. The characters are very interesting with inferred backstory that pique the interest to want to learn more about them. The milieu, the world building and mechanics of the world, is unique and while parts of it may seem like commonly used tropes there is an originality that keeps you engaged all through the episode of this fantasy series.
The main idea of the series is that heroes are criminals punished to act as ordered by commanding officers, especially in life threatening situations, to support the Order of Holy Knights. And even should they died, they can be revived to continue their sentence, regardless of if their own body is intact enough to be revived in. Add into the mix the enemies of the Holy Knights the Demon Lords and their virulent Demon Blight that corrupt wildlife and vegetation alike with tumor-like protrusions. And the final piece of the series are the Goddesses, artificial entities that can be attached to a given combatant to bestow their miracles upon to turn the tide against the Demon Lords.
Xylo Forbartz is one of the penal heroes whom we are introduced to as the lead of the series. Rough of edge and carrying a chip on his shoulder over the reason for his sentencing, he showcases the over-the-top nature of battle in this world with acrobatics and blade work mixed with magic infused leaps and explosions. Alongside him in his sentence is Dotta Luzulas, a fellow hero who would rather avoid combat and pilfer unattended items left for his sticky fingers to grab on a whim with little thought for consequences. This is made clear in the opening of the episode by Dotta running from Demon Blighted creatures in the middle of dragging away a covered box necessitating Xylo’s intervention to save him.
This is then where our next main character is introduced when the box is revealed to be a coffin containing a young-looking girl revealed by Xylo to be a Goddess. Attempting to leave the motionless Goddess as another Demon Blight attack is heard at the bottom of the ridge they are camped by, while forming a plan to save what soldiers he can Xylo and Dotta are soon surprised by Teoritta, Goddess of Swords, awake and raring to go to save the soldiers promising her miracles to her “knight” asking only for the proper amount of praise and head pats. This prompts Xylo to declare he does not need the help of a Goddess and he promptly races down to intervene in the attack.
I will not spoil anymore than that and will eagerly suggest that you see the premier episode for yourself if you feel interested. Also, there are presently five volume of the light novels officially translated for which it is based available as of December 9th if, like myself, you cannot wait to find out what comes next week to week and the first volume of its manga adaptation available due out at the end of June 2026.
