[Mission] [TWFNE] Week 197: Appearance In Dawn

As Keydis fell from above, Aeria danced below.

Her body twisted and moved, spinning and ducking through the mass of tentacles that cracked at her like whips, her halberd twirling in her hands like a baton. The backhaft slammed into the ground as she pivoted away, then pushed up to smack one limb as she sliced through another with the other side. The anger at her comrade’s wounds fueled her motion, leading her step by step through her macabre waltz.

The guardian struck at her wildly, devoting more and more appendages to the task until the air around seemed to become a small pocket of dark night. Still the lancer moved, undaunted by her monstrous foe’s mad attacks. The tentacles tore lines in her clothes, created small welts and bruises as she flowed between feint and counterstroke, but still she moved, keeping her lifeblood within as she danced the line between heaven and hell.

In contrast to her partner’s grace, the Keydis was a stone, simply thrown down from the heavens. When thrown from the heavens, however, grace becomes secondary to the pure potency and lethality of physics. Gravity fell upon the mercenary, pushing her to go faster and faster. Her prey, focused as it was on Aeria, could only mount a small defense against her, sending tentacles up to encircle and grab her.

It was like trying to catch a bullet with your fingers. The weapons of night, fast as they were, missed. They darted back down, attempting to grab her back and pull her up, but she was too fast. With a roar, she plunged into the guardian, her blade tunneling through dark flesh and what little armor remained until she emerged through the other side, bursting out the bottom portion of the beast, blood dripping from her hands as it clenched her blade in a white knuckled grip.

Aeria continued moving, shifting past and through attack after attack. Her foot stumbled for a step, failing to adjust for a fist sized chunk of concrete that had landed just before she had entered that space. It threw her movements off by maybe an inch. Her movement stopped for a single split-second to try and compensate, but she knew that that was enough. she cursed, fully ready to catch the deadly point of a tentacle through the gut or even her head. She did not close her eyes, however, and looked up sharply at what fate held for her.

A single tentacle, sharp as a claw and filled with starry black night, hovered between her eyes, less than a single inch from her face. It was completely still, motionless. Past it, she could see the same stillness in the guardian itself. It had become almost like a statue, frozen in time. Small grainy bits of what appeared to be sand flaked off of it as the woman watched, carried off by the wind.

Under that statue, Keydis stood, panting. Her violent eyes stared at the white orb skewered into the middle of her blade. It glowed like a dying sun, filled with sharp but quickly dimming light. It pulsed vainly, trying to breathe life back into itself. Then, with a harsh crackling sound, cracks sprouted from it, starting from the blade and expanding rapidly to cover the whole sphere. Each weak pulse of light seemed to cause chunks of sphere to fall off, shattering into powder as they landed upon the ground.

Then, with one last pulse, the entire orb collapsed into dust. A small plate of metal fell with it, clattering onto the ground and raising a small white cloud of dust. The wind seemed to pick up at this, blowing away both the white dust and, as Aeria watched, taking more and more of the guardian’s corpse. It dwindled into nothing swiftly, as if time itself was carrying off the body to be disposed of.

At the end, all that was left of the guardian was that small plate. No larger than Keydis’ hand, it gleamed as if it had been freshly polished. Words, deep and clear, had been engraved upon the metal. Words that carried the weight of an epitaph.

“And So Ends The Watch Of High Templar Chesmalt. May His Memory Be An Everlasting Bulwark.”

With the guardian gone, the way to the to the main entrance was clear. A set of heavy stone doors looms at the top of the stairs. They are ornately decorated with carvings and decorations. A few flecks of sparkling paint still remain, but most of it had worn off, revealing the dark blue tint below.

Aeria walked over to stand next to Keydis, looking down at the plaque that lay in the midst of the dusty remains of the creature with whom they'd just fought, dusting her fuzzy hair off with one hand and leaning up against the haft of her halberd. She read the plaque and raised an eyebrow. "I guess High Templar Chesmalt wasn't going to give up his guardianship without a fight."

She gave her companion an appraising glance. "You are one crazy fighter. I mean that in the best possible way incidentally. I don't think that we could have managed any of this without you. Thank you, Keydis."

In spite of the best efforts of the medics to stop her, Diamantus wasn't having any of it. She'd deserted the field of battle (albeit to save a life) but she was not going to let Keydis and Aeria carry the fight on their own. She took back the belt she'd used as a tourniquet on Gwen and holstered her guns properly before stumping off in the direction of the battle's aftermath.

She found Aeria and Keydis standing in front of the plaque. Coming up beside the spurii, she clapped Aeria on the shoulder. "You did a good job, you two. Gwen's alright, they've got things under control. Sorry I ran off like that but I was gonna be Vis-damned if I let that girl die."

“To Eversor with High Templar Chesmalt,” the brunette grumbled. With adrenaline fading, Keydis was left panting for breath, finally feeling the strain in her muscles and the pain from her wounds. She dropped down to one knee, sweat rolling down her skin, stinging in the wounds on her back. With each shuddering breath, a pang ran through her chest. She touched it through her armor, wincing but nodding as she prodded. Maybe a crack or two, but nothing broken.

Leaving the rest of her wounds unchecked, Keydis instead focused on her sword, eyes carefully taking it in. She responded to Aeria’s praise with little more than a grunt, more concerned with making sure she hadn’t critically damaged the blade with that last reckless attack. Finally, she let out a sigh of relief and slid the weapon into its sheath. There was a warp and the guard was loosened from the handle slightly, but it was still serviceable. She’d have to be careful with it and repair it when the timing was better.

With a nod to Diamantus as the velen returned, Keydis asked, “Good that she lived, but if she wasn’t going to fight, why’d she even come?” The spiky-haired brunette grabbed her anvil-axe and sheathed it over one shoulder, taking a deep breath. Her eyes were drawn down to the violet blades protruding from both arms, a sense of disgust overwhelming her. She wanted to jam them into a crevice and rip them off again, no matter how connected to her they were.

She would need the cursed things, though.

“Let’s go, and just hope we find more of the weaklings inside. I’ve only got two or three more of these big ones in me today.” She laughed. What else could she do?

Back in camp Gwendolyn was asking herself the same thing as Keydis.

"What kind of adventurer runs away and then looses her foot?"

The irony in her predicament was palpable, thick like congealed and rotten soup, and everyone else nearby could taste it too since she hadn't shut up about it since a medic sent someone to retrieve her foot and she could do something else besides scream in pain.

"I mean, it's dumb, that was dumb, I'm dumb. No! Sis taught me better than that." The girl stopped talking for a minute to think, a rare occurrence, trying to remember what exactly what her sister had actually said.

Her thinking didn't last long though, and the girl was quickly distracted by the bustling activity of the medics rushing around the wounded. The spurii hadn't given much thought to it before, but there were still other people fighting in the areas around them. The tents were full of velen and laicar of varied colors, mostly pale white among the laicar and pastels colored velen, all nursing wounds from the beasts that she'd been shooting at from afar earlier that day. Some of their wounds worse than her own.

"I guess that's why those things weren't attacking the others and me- the others earlier... I don't even know their names do I?" She thought aloud to herself, and frowned, a new perspective of the conflict at hand falling into place in her mind.

Then she turned to glance at the gilded longbow lying against her cot and her bag tied around it. Then she sighed and reached into it, rummaging around for a brief moment until her talons wrapped around a ball of glass on a leather string filled with a clear bronze liquid.

Gwendolyn pulled the ball close and focused her gaze on the tiny disc floating inside it while she wrapped the string around her claws. "Maybe these guys need someone with a little more experience than me."
