Safe and Sound

“You could be my luck
Even if we're six feet underground
I know that we'll be safe and sound”

-Capital Cities

Early morning had arrived with a bitter chill in the air, causing the small vizard to feel around for a blanket within hands reach. She felt around for a moment, confused as to why she was feeling what seemed to be grass. Tokiwa shot up in a sitting position with her blue eyes wide open, taking in the strange scenery around her. Somehow the red haired had ended up in a lush, green, Tokyo park surrounded by tall silver skyscrapers the night before. She did not recall ever coming by here, she didn’t even know what part of the city she was in. Nothing was familiar, and had she been a human child she would have been panicked. Who was she kidding, she was worried, she had no memory of the night before. The sky was still on the dark side, but the city roared with life in every direction. There was even an elderly couple in the distance going for walk, most likely their daily routine.

Toki smiled as the sight reminded her of her now family waiting for her back at the warehouse. How they must have been worried, especially Kyojitsu. She had bonded to the artist tightly, thinking of him as her older brother, her very first family member. He must have been looking for her, right? Of course he was, and when she found him she would take him back to the park and share her find with him. She would bring them all out here, all the vizards! When was the last time they all had fun together? Then again since when was she the one to suggest new outings?

She just felt good today, not nearly as moody as she normally was. It took even Tokiwa herself by surprise. She would have thought after the rude, cold wake that she wanted to snap at everyone. Instead she just wanted to get home and tell everyone about her strange occurrence.

Without a moment to waste, Tokiwa took off running in the direction she figured the warehouse was in, her shoes clapping against the sidewalk as she went. The worst that would happen is she would have to turn around and try the other way. The scenery became more and more familiar as she went along though, bringing another smile to her face. She drew in a deep breath as she ran, the cold air stinging her lungs and reminding her that that was alive.

“Feels good doesn’t it? You should enjoy it, because at the rate your training is progressing, you won’t make it to see spring arrive. Hahahaaaa!”

The vizard could see his face flash in her mind briefly, his glowing yellow eyes watching her every move. It was her hollow, Waruagaki, making himself known lest she should forget about his existence. How could she? He controlled so much in her life it seemed. It was because of him she had to choose her allies carefully. Anyone could be someone wanting to stab her in the back, literally. She suddenly didn’t feel so safe on her own anymore, she had never been the strongest in any of her groups. Maybe Waru was right, she didn’t particularly believe in herself. She never had and that is one of the reasons she was here right now instead of with the Gotei.

Toki opened her mouth to agree with her hollow, but shut it again, deciding against a remark. She didn’t want to give that thing an inch. He was just waiting in the dark for her to falter, so he could squeeze his hold on her tighter. He probably already knew what she was thinking anyway as they reached the outskirts of the industrial zone, words were not needed. The sun had risen completely by now and silhouetted the familiar shapes of the warehouses in front of the small teen. Pulling a pair of sunglasses out of her messenger bag and slipping them on, Tokiwa proceeded to walk through the rows of old buildings used for storage, and in her recent memory, vizard housing. She rounded a corner, kicking an empty can of ginger beer in the process and sending it flying into the side of her home. It clanked to the ground near the entrance.

The large sliding door hung open about a foot, just enough for Toki to see that there was any activity going on in the dark building. She could just make out the kitchen from where she stood. The only thing she could come up with was she must have gotten home before the others got up. Slowly, the horned vizard slide the door open, it squealed and whined on its track as it otherwise moved with ease. She could see tiny bits of dust flying up in the columns of daylight as she went to flip on the light switch.

Nothing. The room remained in its darkened state and Toki let out a frustrated sigh. “Guys! I’m home! What happened to the electricity in here!?” She stood there, her ears staining to hear a reply. She thought she heard one for a moment, the faint sound of Kyo’s voice off in the distance. She shrugged it off though and shivered at the thought of her mind playing tricks on her. She hated when that happened.

The red head made her way through the makeshift house, quietly opening doors to see if anyone was home before taking a seat on her own bed, it was uncharacteristically dusty, but it was still hers. Toki shook her bedding out with a cough, then plopped down on the mattress and proceeded to stare up at the ceiling.

“Looks like they ditched you in the park and moved, kid. Thats tough luck, maybe we should hunt them down and teach them a few things.” Waru said excitedly at his new plan.

“No one left anyone, they are just out is all. People do this. You just want an excuse to eat them like any hollow would. I’m still in control, and as long as I am my friends are safe and sound.” Tokiwa stretched out on the bed, imagining dancing images on the ceiling to entertain herself while the power was apparently out. She expected to hear footsteps anytime now of her vizard family returning.
