Addendum: This is for week 330, not 329...
The night sky was coming through the windows of the closed school. The doors had been shut for the day and the students had already been sent home, clearing out the school for him and making his investigations easier. Holding his zanpakutou over his shoulder he sighed as he walked down the halls. This, however, was some of the boring parts of his job. Patrolling the halls and searching for clues was never like what they showed on the television shows. It was never fun, or interesting or have any witty dialogue involved. And usually his kind of investigations ended up with him getting attacked.
Opening one of the doors to the classrooms he marched to where he’d found the body. He’d had that girl, the class rep, remove the other students from the area but with all those souls moving through the area with their own unique spiritual signatures made it hard for him to track the spirit he’d seen fleeing. Now that there was no one here it should be a simple enough matter to find the culprit, supposedly. So far no signatures had manifested, which either meant the spirit was hiding or wasn’t even on the premises.
“Damn,” the assassin growled to himself as he walked through the room.
The young soul was trying to push his essence outwards to read the scene but too many conflicting ‘scents’ were in the room. Day to day activities of the students coming into the classrooms and sitting there for lectures or practical tests had marred the room with the ambient noise of their person spiritual pressures. He walked over to where the bloodstain had been before it had been cleaned up. So far the school was trying to get the mess cleared up in house.
“It’s over here,” a girls voice said from the hallway as footsteps echoed through the hall. “This is where they found Nanase’s body.”
The soul reaper grimaced as his brain whirred and tried to think through a solution. He looked at the window and made a move towards it when he noticed a blinking red light on it, signifying some kind of alarm attached to the thing. Growling he ran behind the teachers desk and hid behind it as the door opened and several pairs of feet marched into the room, accompanied by a pair of flashlights suddenly flooding parts of the room in light as they moved back and forth.
“So this is where she was found,” a girls voice, different form the first one, said.
“Y-yeah,” a boys voice said with a sigh. “Has anyone figured out who did it?”
“No,” another boys voice said.
Why are you hiding? Grey man whispered in his ear, sounding like rotted leather tearing. His voice was hard to hear sometimes but in moments like this he seemed to be easily understood. Isn’t it your job to be here, investigating this?
In secret. Tod thought back, trying to listen to the others conversation. It seemed to be continuing on without him. Nobody here is supposed to know I’m here.
“Could it be the Ghost Girl?” the first girls voice asked quietly. “Didn’t this start with her?”
“Yeah, but how could a three hundred year old dead woman be able to kill a Seventh Dan student like Nanase?”
“Just because she had that much power doesn’t mean she’s not able to be felled by a ghost.” the first boy said with a growl. “Her power was useless anyways, I mean who’s going to fall for a little light trap?”
“Yeah,” A third female voice said. “Who would fall for something like that Kimihero?”
“Th-that was one time!” the first boys voice said angrily. “She made a bunch of holes of the fight ring and I fell in one since she made it look solid!”
“So you’re just an idiot,” the third girl said with a small smile.
“Shut up!”
“This is pointless,” the second male voice said quietly. “Why are we here Lana?”
“To find the Ghost Girl of course,” the first female said with a smile in her voice. “I think theres someone else here, I can sense them.”
Shit. Tod thought with a grimace. If they caught him sneaking around they’d be even more suspicious. No students were supposed to be here after dark anyways. And so far those named around him were all Student Council members, all of whom were Tenth Dan students, the highest rankings a student could get here. If they caught him there’d be a fight, which he couldn’t afford at the moment.
He looked around the corner of the desk to see the students standing in a huddle around where the body had lain.
“How did you die Nana?” Lana asked quietly. The others looked at their leader then looked down at the ground where the body was found. “Why did they close this investigation to us students? If one of us died we’d all want to be involved in finding the killer right?”
“Y-yeah” Kimihero said with a sigh.
Tod grimaced again as the lot of them stood staring at the ground and thinking. He needed out of here if he was to get this stupid job done. As he growled he saw a movement from nearby in one of the corners. A girl was staring at him, and at the spot where the girl had died. Her eyes looked like she was in shock but the others were ignoring her. He noticed a chain in her chest, meaning she was a ghost waiting to pass on. He blinked, thinking it through for a few moments.
I’m an idiot. These students, no matter how strong they were, couldn’t see spiritual beings, at least not in general. As long as he kept his spiritual pressure condensed he shouldn’t show up to them. The stronger ones spiritual pressure the more likely one was to be noticed after all.
He stood up and began moving through the school room. He avoided the flashlight the leader carried and made his way over to the other side of the room. No point in bringing notice to himself. He made his way over to the girl and looked her in the eyes. She was ignoring him as he tried to shake her or move her out of the room to talk to her. Even if they couldn’t see him they could still hear him. She flinched away from him, curling further into the corner.
I guess I’ve got to do this the hard way. The assassin thought with a small chuckle. The students jumped, two of the flashlights flashing rapidly through the room. He allowed himself to appear to them for a moment, in the flash of a passing flashlight, then he faded from sight again. The flashlight beam flashed back again to where it had seen him for a moment, getting a gasp from the girl holding the flashlight.
“What the hell?” the girl said with a terror edged voice as the beam went through the room to where she’d seen the mysterious man all dressed in black. “What was that?”
“What was what Ririko?” Kimihero asked with a small amount of panic now in his voice.
“I could’ve sworn I just saw someone.” the girl said, breathing in shallow rapid breaths. “Where the hell did he go?”
“No ones here Riri,” Lana said, grabbing a hold of her friends’ shoulders. She was shaking her for a moment before a thump sounded on the other side of the school room.
The kids turned and bathed the area in light to find one of the desks had toppled to the ground. Goose bumps were crawling all over Lana’s skin but she wouldn’t let the others see it.
“Get out...” Tod’s voice whispered from behind the girl. She whirled around to see nothing but air as the others began to cluster around her. They were all seeking the safety of the herd, trying to put someone else between them and danger. “Get out... Get out... Get out...”
Repeating the saying every few seconds he began to make his way towards the chalk board at the head of the class. The kids were really starting to freak out now as they tried to figure out where the voice was coming from. Tod held his spear up, putting the bladed end of it to the chalkboard. The board itself shrieked as he wrote on it.
The students jumped and turned towards the chalkboard as they shined light on it. Out of nowhere letters began to appear to be carved into the chalkboard.
“G.E.T.O.U.T.” Kimihero said with tremulous terror in his voice. “Get out...?”
The silence was deafening as the children stood frozen in terror, he could almost hear their minds whirring as they tried to come up with some kind of logical solution to what was happening to them. He wasn’t going to give them the chance, though.
“GETOUT!” at least they did until Tod screamed at the top of his lungs next to the group, almost shrieking the command. The lot of them screamed in terror and began running to the exit, all except for Lana, who fainted on the spot.
Tod, on the other hand, began laughing, which fortunately the students couldn’t hear over their terrified screams of terror. He turned back towards the girl hidden in the corner, only to see sheâ™d vanished somehow during the commotion.
“Dammit...” the assassin made his way out of the classroom and began walking down the halls in search of the girl. She was the same ghost he’d seen fleeing the scene when he’d discovered the body. He needed to find her to ask her some questions and find out what she’d seen.
