Week 325: Confessions of the Soul

Confessions of the Soul
1040 Words

Takes place after:
Little Graverobber

Her eyes, fluttering softly in the dark of night, had trouble adjusting themselves to vivid images coursing past them. Her ears, likewise, had trouble discerning what she needed to hear, with what she wanted to hear and what she ended up hearing as a cacophony of sad and lonely figures wailed through the abyss.

“This is taking too long,” a voice called out from behind Lina.

Instinctively, she tried to turn her head around to face whoever had spoken to her, but the simple fact that she was hanging with her legs tied to the ceiling made it more than just a little bit difficult to turn herself around. No matter how hard she tried - and she tried ridiculously hard - Lina couldn’t wrest herself from her bindings.

Then again, she never really expected them to just give in with the slightest hint of her trying to get free. After all, she’d been hanging upside down for at least a few weeks now and, though most of the blood in her body should’ve rushed to her head by now, she felt surprisingly fresh. Perhaps her being dead had something to do with it.

“But,” the voice called out from behind her again, “you’re not really dead now, are you?”

“Who are you?” Lina asked with annoyance coated behind every syllable.

“You may call me Mikhael, little Graverobber,” Mikhael responded, though Lina wasn’t sure in what kind of fashion as she couldn’t see his face.

Strangely enough, she couldn’t hear any discernable intonation in his voice either. It was as if he was directly speaking to her, through her. A part of her felt enthralled by this sudden revelation, but another part of her wanted nothing more than to get the man’s voice out of her head. She’d had enough of mind games ever since Cain had decided to turn her into his vessel - along with turning her into the vessel of god knows how many other souls.

Was that why she was chained upside down right now? Had her mind become a prisoner in Cain’s grand scheme of things as well, or was there something else at play here? She hadn’t seen Mikhael during her initial... experience and, though she couldn’t see what he looked like, she was almost positive this man was a demon - just like Cain had been.

“Mikhael?” she asked in a tone of uncertainty. She wasn’t sure what to make of this demon-man. He seemed adamant with just letting her hang upside down, leaving her to her fate - whatever that may be. A part of her was thankful that he did just that, another part of her wished he was a bit more active in explaining whatever the hell was going on.

She knew she had died, but she also knew that this was not what it would be like to be truly dead. And that wasn’t just because Mikhael had mentioned her not actually being ‘really’ dead. It was more a gut feeling that she had that made her sceptic of her state of being dead. It was more like some form of limbo she’d found herself in. Hanging - literally - between the life she’d left, and the life beyond.

Something was keeping her here, but she didn’t know for what reason this might have been. Perhaps it was Cain’s doing. Maybe he’d hoped that she would’ve succumbed to the darkness by now and that he could take control of her soul before too long. Or, perhaps, this was Mikhael’s doing. After all, she still didn’t know his modus operandi.

“How are you holding up out there?” Mikhael suddenly asked, snapping Lina back to her distorted senses.

“What do you think?” she replied, expecting her response to be the single most believable thing in the world. In reality, though, she was holding up just fine. She wasn’t thirsty, she wasn’t hungry, she wasn’t sleepy, she didn’t even feel bored and she’d been here for well over a week now just doing nothing and hanging around like a lunatic. Of course, she wouldn’t ever dare to tell him that.

“I can help you out, you know.” His voice changed a little as he said this, a clear intonation finally shining through his otherwise neutral voice. “Let you down from there, free you from the chains that bind you. I can help you, Avani “Lina” Nair, our little Graverobber...

“For a small price, of course.”

“What price?” the princess asked, trying her hardest not to sound too hopeful.

“You just...” he began, his voice trailing off into the distance, “let me in.”

“Not a chance.” She didn’t even need to think twice about her response. “I’d rather stay here, hanging for all of eternity, than let you in, Cain.”

“Oh, how you hurt me so, Lina,” Mikhael responded. “In this world, this very definition of your life, there is no Cain. I can show you the world, Graverobber, let you feast in the Void of your own competence. All I need for you is to let me in, is that really such a sin?”

“Maybe not,” Lina responded, “But I’d rather not have someone poke around in my subconscious when I don’t even know who are what he is. You expect me to just take your word for it, demon? You should stop insulting my lineage.”

Sighing rather audibly at Lina’s definite answer, Mikhael turned around - though she couldn’t see him actually do that, she could hear him walk away from her - and disappeared into nothingness again.

“Suit yourself,” his voice echoed through the now stillness of Lina’s mind again. “Our time will yet come, my time will yet come, Little Graverobber. Until then, I hope you’ll find a way out of this place yourself and...

“You’d better hurry.”

As Mikhael’s voice faded, so did a lot of other things from Lina’s vision. Her eyes began to become blurry, or maybe the darkness had finally started to catch up to her. Her body began to feel weak again, her lungs were aching for water and her stomach was burning for food and soon the young princess screamed as the agonizing pain of her own soul caught up to her.
