That little note at the start really wasn't necessary. It's all storytelling, and getting to know the characters is part of telling a good story. I actually really appreciated getting to know this crew a little better. We had kind of a handle on Tes already, but this let us dig a little bit deeper.
The fake-out with Bahl was handled nicely. I went into it expecting a fake-out, and then it seemed like that didn't happen, so I assumed the joke was how nonplussed the woman was, but then we circle back around to reveal it was, after all, a fake-out. Learning a little more about Bahl was good, also, making him a little more than the fat joke the other characters kept making of him. Nice to find out that he's happy to foster that impression since it causes people to underestimate him.
Idro comes as the biggest surprise because I didn't really have any impression of him before this, and I walk away finding him the most intriguing. Before, he seemed to do a good job covering up his instability, but now that we're in his head and seeing how he responds to the Noise, I begin to wonder what kind of liability he will be.
Larsi seems like she's not meant for this kind of life like the other three. Knowing she's mostly in it for Idro, who we've previously established is not interested and now established is probably quite dangerous for her health, I have to wonder how she got into this situation to begin with. That high society confidence peeking out near the end of her segment keeps her from being one-note.
Since we're likely going to be seeing a lot more of these four, getting to know them better is perfect. Visuri and Calovan make for an interesting pair. While Visuri still seems offended by Deni and antagonistic, it feels like Calovan may be uncomfortable with the pressure but otherwise fully onboard with advancing his own aims if it only requires giving Deni what he wants. Surprising to see that Deni kept Visuri's dalliance with the Abiectus secret even from Calovan, too. It both serves to ingratiate her to him and establish that there may be things he wants each of them to do separate from the other. Looking forward to seeing what mad schemes Deni has cooking.
