[8th] Week 95: Torasawa Anzu

Contact information: My email address is [email protected]. My AIM username is EnokiChica, and my YIM name is xxprincessofwindxx.

Character name: Torasawa Anzu

Age: Would appear on Earth to be twenty-three.

Persona: Despite her appearance or what one might think of her, Anzu is somewhat shy. Having been raised to trust no one, it takes some time to get to know her. Once a bond is formed, though, Anzu is a woman true to her word, and loyal to the end. Having very little family, the few people that have taken the time to win her over as a friend had become very close to her, like kin. Once she's comfortable with her new acquaintance, she opens slowly, like a flower in bloom, sharing smiles, wit, and a touch of sarcasm.

Anzu is also a very logical woman, feeling that everything in the universe has it's place, and to every question, there is an answer. She sees fanciful thought as a waste of time, but she's been known to squander many idle afternoons with such thought.

Physical stature: While still shorter than most men, it embarrasses (and sometimes intimidates) Anzu that she's still a number of inches taller than other women her age, holding a height of five feet and nine inches.

Her body is slender and athletic, but still "undeveloped," in her opinion. She's still waiting on the feminine curves that she feels are owed her, and she refuses to believe that she's done growing without the changes she deserves.

The only other distinct features of her body are two tattoos. Across the soft interior of her slender right wrist, her name is etched in a confusing, almost indiscernible hand. The only trace of the other marking is just visible at the nape of her neck before her shinigami robe conceals the rest.

The story had been told to her many times that, when she was born, her father had abandoned the name he'd planned to give her in lieu of a name that suited her better, all because of the color of her hair. For as long as she can remember, she had always kept her bright, ginger orange hair short, and she plans to keep it that way. Her hair is stylishly choppy, longer on one side than the other, never failing to get in her eyes. The hair at the back of her head is by no means long, but always appears to need a trim.

The face that this hair frames has a gentle heart shape. Simple lips, an unassuming nose, a dusting of freckles over her cheeks, and a set of arresting hazel eyes...all of these things paired almost always with a standoffish but attentive air.

Biography: Anzu grew up in a sparsely populated area far outside of historical Kyoto (exact years unknown, though it is safe to say electronics and vehicles had more than one hundred years before they were to be invented) in a tiny house at the foot of a forest. The small house was sturdy, though, with two rooms. The room right within the front door was where she and her father ate and slept. The back room was her father's makeshift laboratory, as he was a (self-proclaimed) scientist of sorts.

As far as Anzu knew, her mother had disappeared shortly after her birth. Without her mother, she and her father invested their lives into each other, and they were the best of friends.

Living quite far from the closest village, Anzu received no formal education. Instead, her father taught her everything he could out of the texts he kept in his lab. She was by his side always, lending a hand in his sometimes quite outlandish experiments, and adding her own ideas to the ever-curious melting pot of his mind.

However, every good thing has its end. Twenty-three years into her life, her father passed away. Shortly after, her own life was lost. Though she searched, she wasn't able to find her father's soul before a Shinigami discovered hers. After much arguing that she needed to stay in Japan to search, the Shinigami convinced her that she should abandon her fruitless search on Earth to try and find her beloved father in Soul Society.

After her soul burial, she spent years combing every district of Rokungai that she could reach, homeless and alone, seeking shelter anywhere that she could stay away from untrustworthy people.

While scouring the 14th district, a man that her father had done business with in life recognized her. After badgering Anzu for hours, she told him of her search. He invited her into his small, mish-mash Rokungai family, persistent upon her making their home her own. Over the time she spent there, she became close friends with Ume, one of the girls in the house.

Dedicated to her new sister, she followed Ume to the Spirit Academy to become a Shinigami at her side. Though they pursued positions in different divisions, Anzu was pleased to be graduating from the Academy with Ume. Outside of the Academy, though, would be where the real tests would start.

Division and seat: 8th Division, unseated.

Zanpakutou: Having spent nearly all of her time within Rokungai as a drifter, she had very few possessions and no money to her name when the head of her new home sent her to the Spirit Academy. When her zanpakutou came to her, she was very pleased with it, even though it wasn't showy like most of the other blades.

Anzu's blade looked as if it had a history...it appeared to be an old weapon, but not old enough to be a relic one would hesitate to part with. The blade is a dull gunmetal color that resists a shining, no matter how hard Anzu would try to burnish it. The blade is also long, nearly five inches longer than the blade of a standard katana.

Into the guard, she and Ume had successfully carved a number of delicate blossoms, significant of every flowering tree that, as if waking from death, shook the snow from its weary branches every spring to burst forth into beauty.

Upon the hilt, she had inscribed the name of her father and of her family, then wrapped it tightly in the thin burial cloth that bodies are dressed in before entombment...very similar to the ones that she had watched her father's body and her own body be wrapped in.

The scabbard is plain (which is all the better for adorning after she achieves Shi Kai, in her opinion). Through the tight sash around her waist is where she wears the scabbard, tucked at her left side for her right-handed attack.

There was shuffling and the hollow snap and pop of a fire in the next room. Upon a worn mat half destroyed by moths, a pile of blankets moaned. Rising out of the coverings, the young girl's mouth opened wide, releasing a long, heavy yawn. Rubbing the sleep out of her eyes with both hands, she stifled another yawn and peeked her eyes open for her first look at the day.

She should have been surprised that the sun hadn't come up yet, and that the small home was still pitch black, but she wasn't. One squinted glance over to her father's equally worn bedroll showed that his blankets were in disarray, and the crackle of fire in the next room proved her theory.

"Still too early..." she murmured to herself, settling back down beneath her covers, allowing her whole body to disappear beneath the old blankets.

She and Ryouta had stayed up late to look at stars. He had promised her Venus after sunset, and Mars before bed. The girl had bet him her morning rice that they wouldn't see both planets on the same night, and she'd lost that bet. Her stomach grumbled at the memory.

The door to the second room opened wide, flooding the black room with dancing firelight. The tall figure silhouetted in the doorway scanned the room quickly, dark eyes glinting in the shifting light. Avoiding the small table, he moved directly to the pile of blankets beneath one of the room's only windows.

"Anzu... Wake up, Anzu-chan."

Grumbling from the curled up girl in the blankets. "Go away, old man. I want to sleep through breakfast so I can forget how hungry I'm going to be."

A pause. Then incessant nudging on the blankets from the man. "Anzu-chaaaan, wake up!"

Waving her hands out of the blankets, she swatted at Ryouta's foot. "I told you to leave me alone," she groused.

The middle-aged man squatted by the belligerent pile, whining childishly. "But nobody can find mushrooms like you can, Anzu-chan!"

Beneath the blankets, the girl smiled. Then, heaving the largest groan that her small body could handle, she moved up out of the warm spot, meeting her father's eyes. "If I go out to get mushrooms, though, I'll be wanting my bowl of breakfast rice back as payment."

Ryouta made a face at her. "Fine. I'll just win it again the next time you bet. You always lose."

A girl cursed with continual bed head, she clawed her fingers through her short orange hair. "Keep saying that, old man. I'll win next time. Why are you up so early, anyway?"

"I couldn't sleep, so I went to the back room to work on something that I'd been tossing around in my head for a while."

"What is it?" Anzu asked, suddenly more awake.

Seeing her excitement, her father veiled his, his face flooding with nonchalance. "Really, it's not important. Just go back to sleep, Anzu-chan. You wouldn't be interested anyway." He distracted himself for a moment, refusing to look at his daughter. When he glanced back at her, though, he couldn't bear it.

He grinned widely at the ginger-haired preteen. "Go get mushrooms, and then I'll show you!"

Grabbing a shabby straw hat at the door, Anzu was gone, running across the dew-covered grass to the mouth of the forest behind their small home. The morning sun's first fingers of light were creeping up into the sky, slowly revealing the thin layer of warm mist she moved so swiftly through.

As lanky as she was for her age, she still moved with the grace of one that had yet to grow beyond their child height. Especially in these woods. She knew this forest inside and out. Every insect, arachnid, and sliming creature that crawled the mossy floor to every chattering and wailing bird in the canopy. Without slowing, she dipped beneath low branches, raising her arms to shield her face against brambles hidden in the brush.

Leaving the mess of brush, Anzu paused, taking a moment to breathe and savor the morning. She had planned on running the whole way, to the mushrooms and back home, but the morning always brought her a calm feeling that very little else could.

Her bare feet padded over the mossy ground, slender, dirty toes taking in the sensation of the thousands of green nubs beneath the soles of her feet. A gentle breeze whispered past her bare calves, ruffling the thin linen of her short yukata.

A small stream crossed her path thirty feet ahead, so she moved on to it, remembering that there was a rotting log nearby where mushrooms grew very well. At the edge of the stream, she craned her neck, spying the white mushrooms growing plentiful on the log across the slow moving water.

Putting the straw hat she held over her short hair, she took up fistfuls of her short yukata and stepped forward into the water. The icy cold of the stream took her by surprise, and a thin gasp escaped her lips. Cold pebbles obeyed the movement of her feet as she began to wade further through the water, the flowing liquid moving lazily southward at mid-thigh.

Shivering against the water, she hurried out the other side, twitching one foot free of water like a perturbed cat. Moving over to the log, she took inventory of the mushrooms she saw. Three different edible kinds growing on this log. Pleased with her find, she took off the straw hat and began to fill it with mushrooms. Picking each small fungi gently by its stem, she dropped it into the hat.

Moment later, hat half full, she cradled it against herself and moved back across the stream, not as surprised by the biting water this time. Gaining her footing against the stones at the bank, she was out of the water and at a run again, homeward bound.

Despite the morning sun glaring in her eyes, and despite the awakening she felt was terribly premature, a smile split her face. She had her mushrooms, her father waiting for her, and a whole bowl of rice with her name on it.

------

Anzu woke suddenly, gasping for breath and gripping her sheets in tight fists. Panting, she stared around the room through wide eyes. A young woman was kneeling by her bed, gazing down at her through silvery blue eyes.

"Are you alright, Anzu...?" she asked, both hands touching the girl's arm. "One of the girls said you were talking in your sleep."

Trying to get her breathing back to normal, she pressed a hand to her chest. She was pale, freckles contrasting harshly with ashy skin. "Ume...it was just a dream... Just a dream..." Her face turned, eyes darkening. "Ryouta..."

Ume's ears pricked at the name, and she instantly pressed a smile through she pain she was feeling for her friend. "Come on, Carrot Head. Time to get up. Fix your messy hair, and lets go find our division houses together."

Trying to push her dream from her mind, Anzu nodded slowly and disengaged herself from her sheets.

Okay... I believe I posted this in the wrong place.. -.-

I did a copy-paste from a Word document, and I made the assumption that it would paste over all of the bolding and spacing that was done. But apparently I didn't get the memo that Word stinks at pasting things exactly as they appear. And it's my fault that I was in a hurry to post it last night when I finished it.

I'll do what I can to get those things fixed up. n_n

Edit: Everything's fixed up. n_n Thank you for pointing out things that I needed to change! I appreciate the help!

As expected everything looks awesome! I'm so glad you're joining! >_<!!!!

Lawl, she's a turtle! XD!

Otherwise, solid stat distribution.

a dusting of freckles over her cheeks

My favorite part about her! <3333

Also, you seemed to have posted it in the right place. So yeah, other than the title everything else is awesome. =D

You'd better be sure to make time for a collab with me. =3

She and Ryouta had stayed up late to look at stars. He had promised her Venus after sunset, and Mars before bed. The girl had bet him her morning rice that they wouldn't see both planets on the same night, and she'd lost that bet. Her stomach grumbled at the memory.

That was possibly the most awesome thing in your sample chapter. <3 -swoon- For some reason that little section really just caught my attention and captivated me.

Sorry, I completely forgot about the new formatting and that we now put what division ya want to join in the title too. ( xP @ Splokie )

Heh, I giggled at how slow your character was but then again, its kind of a unique change since most people tank their Hohou and Zan and leave the other two to die. n_n

Overall, the application is gorgeous, Erin. I love the character to pieces. <3

Woah, to get such awesome reviews from the RPG's arguably sexiest couple in a row... This application must be too smexy. You're a smex-magnet. @_@

Oh, and Stephums, it's nice to see you reviewing apps, even if it's just a short comment :3

And because I did the same thing to Yota:

...This must be the true power of Stephie, the Sexilicious Reviewer.

Yeeeeaaaah, she's a turtle. x___x So far! But-but-but.....no special reason, so I have no good excuse. .-.

Thanks for the nice comments, Stephieface and Myles! n___n

And, the arguability aside, they ARE the sexiest couple. They got the Erin-chan seal of approval for Sexiest Couple before they became absolute AWESOME on BFRPG. n___n

Ohohoho... it's Erin's application. (goes about setting blades all around her application along with flaming toilet paper and releases the monkeys)

Anyhow, nice application, doesn't reveal too much and isn't too wordy (cause you know, we all hate words). The paragraph structure is pretty good and there's nothing really to complain about. You seem to have a firm picture in your head about how you want your character and that's always a good thing.

...do note, that I do not review applications often and when I do it's not usually this uh... dumb. (nods sagely) Anyway off I go! (runs away before Stephy attacks him for setting loose the monkeys and the flaming toilet paper)

yaaaay erin n____n

great job on your character and the chapter, i really enjoyed reading it! now i don't have the only underdeveloped female shinigami, haha. so we should collab sometime *steals anzu away and corrupts her* >3

and yeah, there's nothing negative to comment! so helpful of me, i know !

Ohohoho... it's Erin's application. (goes about setting blades all around her application along with flaming toilet paper and releases the monkeys)

Well, I suppose I'd rather have flaming toilet paper and the MONKEYS than you putting poop in my application like you said you would... *shoves application up into shirt for safekeeping*

i don't have the only underdeveloped female shinigami, haha. so we should collab sometime *steals anzu away and corrupts her* >3

Waitwaitwait..... A collab offer based solely on the fact that she's flat?! I ACCEPT! *ish okay with being stole'd*

Torasawa Anzu,

After being reviewed by the Application Acceptance Staff, your application to the Eighth Division was approved.

We're sorry for the delay caused by the forums' down-time, as well as other more personal factors, and wish you a pleasant and long-lived career as a fledged shinigami.
