Welcome to Nier: Automota, home of the highest quality androids around. Yes, the main character, 2B, is an android. It is the far future. Earth has been invaded by aliens and overrun by their robot creations. The new group of super androids known as Yorha has been made to finally end the war so humanity can stop hiding on the moon.

So, the world is pretty bleak. All the androids know is fighting and more fighting. Which is fine since the fighting in this game is great. Controls are tight, and you can pull off combos by mixing heavy and light attacks. You have a POD that’s basically a rapid fire machine gun and giant laser cannon all mixed together.

You can equip two weapons at once, and they’re divided into four categories. Swords, large swords, spears and knuckles. Each one has flashy moves with great animation. Your POD can be equipped with different effects if you don’t want a laser cannon. Combat is solid and satisfying in the game.
But then it mixes things up with flying sections, both single direction mode and twin-stick mode. These parts are simpler, but still fun. At times, it can get hectic with the screen filled with bullets.

And the music in this game is fantastic. It has a great soundtrack that matches well with the bleak tone of the world. It is full of haunting vocals that lend a lonely air to everything.
What about the characters? 2B is your standard no nonsense badass with a soft side. 9S, though, has some real interesting qualities to him. He’s the one that changes the most through the game.

As for the story, the first playthrough is kind of simple. You get told to go somewhere, you go there, kick ass and that’s it. There are lots of cool scenes and areas but not much more to that. To learn more about the backstory of the game, you really need to do a second playthrough. That will shed some light on the stuff you saw before, maybe giving you a new perspective. It is well worth it to play through Nier: Automata multiple times and obtain a happy ending.
