Regarding the questions you answered for me, I am actually hoping to find an in-character answer to the second one. I understand that I get to choose which squad I join, but I was hoping to find out how my character would go about an initiation into one.

I don't really know how. I think the chat client I use may prevent me from entering of my own accord.
