~ A Pretty-Ass Fucking Forest ~

This thread is for: Mineto Mitsuyo, Keiryaku Sunai

The sun, slung low in a serene, cloudless blue sky, threw light out across the forest. Sunshine caught on the thin, wisp-like branches of the trees sparsely populating the area, tangled in a few scatterings of leaves, and spilled itself across the mossy forest floor like liquid gold. The forest seemed to stretch on into forever, disappearing in a smudge of brown and green on the horizon, where the far-off treetops touched the sky. Dirt and weeds, dead leaves and fallen tree limbs matted the ground. The air was still – unnaturally so. The forest was silent and unmoving, like a snapshot frozen in time.

Mitsuyo was incredibly confused.

Since when was he in a fucking forest?

The redhead paused and looked back down at the phone in his hand. The screen glared up at him, and the image on its display hadn’t changed. The blinking red dot that represented him on his map was still where it had been a few seconds ago -- at the entrance to a room not unlike the one in which he’d started. He’d passed through a cold, gray, and relatively expressionless hallway to get here, and that had gone without incident. But now...

Mitsu looked up.

He had to squint to get a good look at the – at this...at his new surroundings. The sun was blinding to his eyes, warm against his skin. Whatever this was, it felt real enough to be a legitimate concern, regardless of whether or not it actually was real. He knew by now that just because something wasn't real didn't mean it couldn't cause harm...and, well, maybe he should’ve been expecting something like this with how that Raifuku guy had just faded away like a ghost after he’d had his say.

After he’d bestowed upon Mitsu a present (bribe) that was just as, if not more, concerning than the change in scenery he’d witnessed just now.

The weight of the ring in the third seat’s pocket felt just as real as the warmth of the sun that had not been there a moment ago, and he’d have to be a moron not to at least consider that. Then again, it wasn’t like he could ignore something that could negate his curse, even if everything turned out to be some shitty hallucination. He didn’t have that luxury. For a moment it was like he was back in Hueco Mundo, surrounded by the desert's bleached white sands and defenseless in the face of an enemy he couldn't see, couldn't hear, couldn't touch...and could never hope to fight. For a moment, the same bottomless desperation threatened to submerge him, leaving him blind with doubts and fears he'd suffered from for as long as he could remember. What if...? What if...? What if...?

But he was a different person from then. He'd made a decision to change...and going back wasn't an option.

“Look at your hand. What you see there is merely one part of the whole. Your allies each have one of their own. Here is my offer: to attain more pieces, you must defeat the others who walk these halls.”

While he had no intention of ‘defeating’ anyone for some madman’s stupid game, Mitsu also knew better than to think this little trial was going to end with everyone holding hands and skipping their way to victory. Not everyone was as stupidly pacifistic as he. That was fine. All he wanted was to get back home (to Kyu) with minimal bloodshed.

Mitsu’s grip tightened around his cellphone.

Of course things had to be like this; a mission as important as this couldn't be easy. ...But Raifuku had made a mistake. What had the man said to him? "Right when you found a reason to need that strength, you were left with nothing."? What a dumbass. He hadn't been left with nothing, even stripped of his kidou.

"Even when you were at your best, dearest Kyuto bled in your defense."? His best? The silver-tongued bastard had no idea what Mitsu's best was.

Come on, Ataru.

The zanpakutou shattered as Mitsuyo drew it from its sheath; his shikai reformed from the sword’s broken pieces, curling around him as two airborne scrolls. They shifted, in constant motion around two spheres of lightly-glowing energy: red and green, green and red.

With a deep breath, Mitsu continued into the...room. Let’s do it right this time.

Sunai touched the bark of one of the trees. He felt the dirt on his boots, and was glad that his choice of footwear was boots instead of the normal sandals. This illusion forest was incredibly detailed and looked so real to him that he thought he was dreaming. The bearded shinigami had a disgruntled looked on his face. He didn’t like the situation he was in at all. He was in a room with the man that was doing all this to the Sereitei and then he magically got here in a forest.

If only he was more aware he could have noticed the trap that the enemy had laid out for them. Sunai vowed that he wasn’t going to be useless in all of this. He thought back on the words of the man Raifuku, He tried to offer me power, but I won’t accept it from someone like him. He is a person without morals to be doing something like this.

Observing the forest, the blonde shinigami took note of the environment around him. I need to be prepared for anything.

Sunai looked at the back of his right hand he saw the symbol printed on it. He knew this symbol would only cause trouble, he trusted his squad mates from the fifth but he wasn’t sure what the other squads would do with this little game. There were also the other people that Raifuku said he invited. They would definitely not be friendly.

He needed to hide his symbol. it would help him get out of fight if others didn’t know what symbol he had. Putting his left hand on his right arm, Sunai ripped off the sleeve of his robes. He took the black cloth and wrapped it around his right and making sure he tied it tight. His symbol was now covered and Sunai felt a bit safer.

Now I just need to get out of this place, Sunai walked through the trees until he noticed a redheaded young man. He saw that the man was wearing a shihakusho so he must be a shinigami on my side. Sunai didn’t know if the young man would attack on sight or if he was reluctant to play the game like the bearded shinigami.

The middle aged shinigami decided to gamble on talking with the young man. Making sure his symbol was hidden Sunai shouted towards the redhead shinigami, “Hey it's nice to see a fellow shinigami!”

Oh thank the fucking King, Mitsuyo carefully didn’t say, although the heavy sigh of relief he heaved was just about as subtle. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected from this test of Raifuku’s...but a friendly face in the first room (forest) he came across wasn’t it.

Maybe things weren’t as bad as he’d assumed.

Yeah, sure.

With a forced smile and the slow, cautious movements of an animal that hadn’t decided whether or not it should run for the hills, the redhead began working his way over to his newfound forest buddy. Every few feet a hidden root or clump of rotting leaves would trip him up, and he had to invest a part of his attention in using Ataru to keep his footing.

“Er, uh, hi!” he called back. He raised his hand in a half-hearted wave, the Insignia of the First a clear circle of arcane runes emblazoned upon his palm. “Same to you. I’m Mineto Mitsuyo, First Division. I, uh, don’t think we’ve met.” The older man didn’t seem familiar to Mitsu – he very well might’ve been one of the shinigami who had passed through the gate with him, but he honestly couldn’t say for sure.

He opened his mouth to say – well, something – and stopped up short, noticing the strip of cloth tied around the man’s hand. His right hand. His kanji hand.

Mitsu considered that for a moment.

Then, hesitantly, he started forward again. He laughed nervously, and while it was a small thing, it sounded sharp and unnatural in their ethereal surroundings. He tried not to cringe. “No offense, but you’re not, ah, gonna try to assault me or anything, are you? I’d...like to think not, but I got the impression that that was what that Raifuku guy was going for when he set us all loose in here.

The man’s spiritual signature painted him as a shinigami, and upon closer inspection it seemed smaller than Mitsu’s own...but Mitsu knew better than to rely solely on what things seemed to be.

“I’d rather form an anti-asshole alliance, myself,” he said. “You?â

These bones were growing weary. The fluidity of youth had steadily been draining for some time. Bones grow brittle. Eyes grow rheumy. And the mind wearies from the endless weight of time as it presses ever downward. A lifetime of hunting had only exacerbated the natural course of life, but his body still flowed with power. Not the budding force of fresh, promising power. He had harvested his own skills, honed his own strengths. He was now as inexorable a force as time itself. His raw presence alone gave the impression of something immovable. Something that had been far longer than it should have.

These bones were growing weary. But they were still good for one last hunt. One final verification of his purpose here. One last death at his hands. A correction of the balance those murderers were so bent on upsetting.

“Nearly there.” He rumbled, his voice raw and gravelly as a mining pit. Flint grey eyes scanned the clearing ahead, searching for the ones he felt.

Ah.

He was nearly upon them. He sighed heavily, allowing power to course through his limbs, feeling the long since familiar well of energy filling what would soon surely be a lifeless corpse.

But not before them.

Hefting his targe into a proper position, the grizzled veteran of time lifted his weapon high overhead, and without a word, began to charge.

There was still a good ten yards or so between the two shinigami when a new presence pricked at the edges of Mitsuyo’s awareness. He paused mid-step and tried not to sigh.

“Hang on,” he said, holding up a hand to forestall...whatever the other shinigami might’ve been about to say. “I think...yeah. We’re not the only ones here.” He frowned (as if he hadn’t been already) and turned, but no amount of squinting through the trees helped him spot the newcomer. The reiatsu signature wasn’t one he knew – hell, it wasn’t even a shinigami’s – but it was definitely headed their way.

Awesome.

“Back up, Ojisan.” The redhead stepped forward; with an absent-minded nod of his head, Ataru’s green scroll flitted away, birdlike, to protect the other shinigami. The other remained at his shoulder. “Let me deal with this, alright?”

Mitsu’s expression was grim but resolved, his footsteps even and measured. He strode deeper into the forest, pocketing his cellphone as he went. He positioned himself between the unfamiliar signature and the as-of-yet-unidentified shinigami.

Shit, he thought. Shit, shit, shit.

When the stranger finally came into view, it was a miserable confirmation of his fears; the grizzled and scarred relic charging his way didn’t look like the sort that was going to sit down and talk things out. Fuck, judging by the raised length of metal in one hand, the shield clutched in the other, and the cold look in his single, flinty-gray eye, this guy wasn’t even planning to bother with an introduction.

That didn’t mean Mitsu wasn’t. “Stop!...Listen!” The man did neither. “I don’t want to fight you! I don’t know who the hell you are or what your motivations are, but my name is Mineto Mitsuyo.” The warrior continued forward, cutting a path through the sparse forest undergrowth, headed straight for him. “...I’d rather discuss things, personally, but you don’t look like the type who’ll understand just like that. Fine.”

Mitsu took a moment to stare at the old man’s short, boxed beard and wild, greying hair. Then he braced himself in the mossy earth and glared at the charging figure.

“Let me show you.” His voice was steely, as if his pulse hadn’t just doubled in the last handful of seconds.

Fuck. Alright, well, time to test this ‘gift’ of Raifuku’s. The third seat swallowed past the collar at his throat and murmured, “Bakudou number five, Mage Eye.”

The boy braced himself. If his curse was still there...if whatever Raifuku had done to him hadn’t actually given him a reprieve from its unwanted effects...then he wasn’t sure what he’d do. Maybe the sight of pointless gender-bending would be enough to stop his attacker.

He needn’t have worried. With a flare of refined kidou energy, the redhead’s eyes began to glow blue.

As the world distorted, lighting itself in monochrome colors, Mitsu didn’t feel relief so much as a grim sort of satisfaction.

There wasn’t much space between him and his grizzled assailant when he said, “Mitsu!”

An unnatural darkness bled into the forest, black as ink. Mitsu kept his red scroll close and waited.

There were two. He noted this with satisfaction, glad to have a chance at snuffing out two of the disgusting black-jackets in one go. One of them was speaking, but the words made no sense. Not that it would have mattered. This was his life. This was his purpose. Seek. Find. Snuff. Just as they did.

The smaller of the two flared with power. Unexpected. He would have thought...

The hesitant one dies first.

The grizzled bastard made no sign of slowing, plunging full-speed into the blackness now spreading around him. Still silent, he swung his weapon full-force at where the unresponsive black-jacket’s head had been a moment ago.

Mitsuyo turned on heel to follow the grizzled man’s charge, stunned into inactivity for a moment. Then realization hit him, and a surge of anger followed in its wake.

Bastard.

That old bastard!

Instead of going for the closer target – Mitsu – the old man was focusing on the apparently-weaker of the two shinigami. Even blind, the man struck with conviction. His form was a white-hot shade of blue, and energy followed the line of his arm as he brought his weapon cut through the air.

Hard and fast enough to give the other shinigami whiplash (and possibly send him sprawling), the scroll Mitsu had left at the man’s side coiled tight around his left bicep and wrenched him backwards. Before the flinty fuck had a chance to follow after his not-yet ally and possibly ventilate him with the heavy length of metal still clutched in his hand, Mitsu was on him.

Hadou Twenty-Five,” he chanted, fast enough that his words were a blur, “Breaking Palm!” Under his reiatsu-sensitive gaze, the third seat’s hands were bathed in blue light – destructive kidou energy pooled in his fists. He could feel the thrum of potential energy trapped beneath his fingertips.

Then he dropped into a fighting stance (Raury and Kyuto’s grinning faces flitted through his mind) and muscle memory took over. Arms up. Elbows in. Fists loose. Weight on the balls of his feet.

“Oi, show me ya learned somethin’ these past few weeks, boyo."

Mitsu didn’t aim at the small of his opponent’s back, low on the left side – he aimed past it. With a vicious shout his right arm snapped forward, and his entire body poured into the strike. His hips and his back foot twisted with the movement.

Antai experienced a brief moment of frustration as his iron struck empty air, whizzing in a useless arc. Had the man moved? He couldn’t tell. Nothing else to do. Correcting his motion, the greyed warrior stepped in for another blow, only to be met with a surprising sensation. Something on his back...thumped. Presumably his other target. The boy must have a way of seeing through this inky mess and had come around for a sneak attack.

Smiling grimly, Antai turned around, grasping the offending fist with one of his own. Though he still couldn’t see, he knew he had the black jacket in his hand. Wordlessly, he swung his iron down hard.

Vincent had wandered his way into the forest room only minutes ago, but he was already coming up on the fray. It hadn't been hard to sense the two heightened spiritual pressures, but Vincent was still surprised to find not a battle, but a bubble of shadow. He hated Break of Dusk with a passion...

"Give vision life, make the intangibles tangible. Bakudou number five, Mage Eye!" The boy shut his eyes tight, still rushing headlong through the forest. As soon as they closed, they were open again, glowing an eerie red. With his infrared vision, he could clearly make out three figures struggling. One large form, attacking the weakest of the three, the third defending the latter. Picking on the weak? Vincent thought, angrily. He didn't know who any of the three were, but he was already on the duo's team.

"Hitotsu!" Vincent cried out, the tattoo flaring a brilliant red on his arm. He lashed out with the energy rope, catching it tight around the piece of cold iron the brutish man was swinging at the smaller of the two. This was his only shot to save the person. Here goes nothing, he thought as he leapt into a flash step, racing past the pair, using all his strength and momentum to yank on the crowbar, hoping to dislodge it, or at least slow it down.

“Futatsu!” Electrical energy pricked at the short hairs on Mitsu’s skin a split-second before a burst of charged energy dispersed into the air around him. The old man’s grip jerked loose, muscles gone momentarily lax from the shock, and Mitsu was gone.

Mitsu darted back, brows furrowed with a combination of surprise and alarm – not at the arrival of another shinigami, whose presence had been foretold by the whisper of an incantation caught by the Chomei at his ear, but at the wild-haired old man.

Had he messed up the incantation for Breaking Palm? No, he would’ve noticed that; the kidou energy engulfing his hands was as it should be – strong and steadily growing. Had his punch missed? There was no way. He’d distinctly felt the impact of his strike. He’d felt the shock race up his arm. So why the fuck hadn’t the hit done anything? Was the old-timer that much stronger than him? Or were his hakuda techniques still not viable in real combat?

The third-seat risked a glance back at the newcomer who was responsible for the rope of energy now lashed around his opponent’s weapon. He took in the blue-washed figure’s spiritual signature, nodded in what he hoped looked like thanks, and then turned his attention back to the fight at-hand.

“Ensnaring sands, fleeting winds,” he chanted, backing out of crowbar and shield range, “bind yourself to mine enemy. And cease his movements.” As if on cue, the dual-scrolls of Mitsu’s shikai each seized one of the hunter’s legs and jerked them out from under him. “Bakudou number seventeen, Earthen Maw!”

A mess of heavy, dark dirt sprang from the forest floor, clogged with moss and rotting leaves. The mass branched out into four strips as it rose, each grasping at one of the grizzled man’s limbs.

Antai grunted as his blow was stayed, not sure what had caused the interference. This blackness was proving quite the annoyance. Had it been his initial target? No, that couldn’t be right, the angle was off and he hadn’t sensed any movement from his target. So, yet another black jacket, then. Like lambs to the slaughter, these ones. The new arrival seemed quite weak, barely capable of slowing his strike on the smallest of the bunch.

An electric jolt stopped his thoughts as his muscles spasmed and became momentarily useless. He kept his iron, but had lost grip of the boy. And now these...bonds. A guttural growl rose from deep in his chest as a quick flare of power broke whatever was holding him. Felt like dirt. Weak.

Now free, Antai roared, yanking his iron free and whomever had been holding it with it. The boy had to go down. Couldn’t have gotten far in this span of time. Stepping forward, the iron sentinel let fly a flurry of brutal slashes in the air, roughly where he felt the presence of his target.

It worked! Vincent rejoiced, amazed his impromptu plan had been enough to save the stronger Shinigami from a brutal blow. He had even bought the reaper enough time to mount a counter-attack. And to top it all off, the guy was an Arcane Specialist, judging by his use of the word "futatsu." It may not have been the Tenth anymore, but they were still both Arcane Specialists. More or less.

The young reaper's joy was short lived, however. Just as soon as the pair had thwarted and countered, the berserker made his own move. Without warning, Vincent was yanked, rather painfully, by his left arm, as Hainawa still connected it to the man's weapon. Before he knew it, he had slammed into the ground at the man's feet, the cold iron slamming down around him. He twisted and curved, avoiding the attacks until... with a loud crack, the crowbar connected with the child's side. The air was knocked out of him and intense pain surged through his body. He was certain at least one rib had been broken.

Still, he had to react, to do something that to prevent the crazed attacker, who now knew where he was for sure, to stop him. "Rise oh maddening gala of the earth, erupt in your imperial wall!" he cried out, tears steaming down his face, every word, every breath reigniting the pain in his chest. "Bakudou number thirty-four, Iron Bastion!" The metallic wall rose between the two, all Vincent's hopes for survival resting within it.

The pained voice of the newcomer shinigami echoed in his ears, the dull crack of metal on bone made his sides ache, and for a moment it was as if he’d been struck as well. “What the fuck are you doing?!”

Yeah, okay, rhetorical question. One of these days he was going to come to terms with the fact that some people were okay with hurting others...but apparently today wasn’t it.

A heavy wall of energy divided the grizzled figure from Mitsu’s new ally, and he didn’t wait to see how their opponent would react before launching a counter-attack of his own. His mind was blanked, over-charged with adrenaline, and he had his extensive training sessions to thank for instinct immediately taking over.

Red then green – using Ataru’s scrolls as springboards, Mitsu launched himself over the other boy’s Bakudou spell. He landed lightly on the forest floor, caught the blue-lit figure’s wrist, and slung his arm over his shoulder. He pulled the smaller boy to his feet, summoned Ataru back to him, and pushed the shinigami back down – this time onto the levitating surface of a green-backed scroll. “I’m Mineto Mitsuyo,” the redhead panted, skirting backwards, away from the bright blue of the other’s barrier as well as their madman opponent. He urged the green scroll higher, carrying the other shinigami towards the treetops and safely out of striking range. “Stay there, alright?” Don’t get yourself killed, he didn’t say.

He turned – red scroll coiled close to his side once more – and fixed his gaze on his vicious opponent. “I’ll deal with the senile old bastard. Hadou forty-four, One Hundred Wooden Arrows, Hadou forty-one, Coiling Abyss.” The first of the spells he cast into Ataru; the hadou scroll flared to life, alight with arcane writing. Color rippled across the ever-changing text, and then the spell settled in, Mitsu’s reiatsu soaking into the scroll’s parchment.

That done, Mitsu dropped to one knee and drove his left arm into the ground; instead of dirt, a deep pool of black caught at the limb, pulling it in. His arm sank in to the elbow. Like a trigger had been pulled, the darkness struck out towards the grizzled melee fighter, black on black. Only Mitsu’s altered vision allowed him to track the spell’s movement across the darkened forest floor. The pool of shadows stopped beneath the wild-haired man and reached out; fast as cracking whips, and just as biting, the shadows struck.

There was a wall now. He couldn’t see it, but he damn well felt it as he tried fruitlessly to bat away some kind of limb and or limbs that were currently giving him a thrashing. It was a pointless gesture, so he stopped and stood straight under the onslaught. What was attacking him? Surely the number of attackers hadn’t grown to this number. It was probably some of that magic he had seen them display from time to time. A shame. He would have liked to kill more of them.

The moment he had been bidding for finally came as that goddamn blackness finally dissipated, giving him a clear view of his surroundings. Yes, a wall of steel. One of the black jackets was riding what looked like some sort of flying carpet. The other, his primary aggressor, had taken refuge behind the steel wall that had taken form just as he was about to finish off one of his targets. Shame.

“There.” He growled.

In one fluid motion, Antai dodged the most recent oncoming attack of what appeared to be shadowy appendages coming from the earth around him and vaulted through the air, clearing the wall that had been between himself and the small black jacket.

Smiling, the aged bastard roared mightily and let fly a flurry of powerful strikes, letting loose a vast amount of his power all in one go.

Despite the pain burning through his chest, Vincent managed to be pleasantly surprised by his new ally's ability to fly him around on a giant scroll. It's just like a magic carpet! the boy thought, excitedly. After all, how many people could say they actually got to ride on a magic carpet in their lifetime, or afterlifetime.

As the scroll brought him to a tree branch big enough to safely hold him, Vincent hopped off, groaning as he did. Moving was not something he or his broken rib enjoyed at that particular moment, but the other boy would probably need his other scroll back. That man was crazy, and they would need every weapon at their disposal.

"Who is that guy, anyway?" Vincent asked, looking back down into the battle. "He seems pretty..." His monologue was cut short by the berserker's latest attack. The young reaper quickly dismissed Iron Bastion, the metal wall crumbling back into the ground from which it had sprung. He could clearly see the enemy punching at the kid with what looked like three separate fists.

"Bakudou number twenty-eight, Anchor!" Vincent shouted, not even sure he knew what he was doing. The binding fabric launched from his hand, aimed for the human's chest. As soon as Anchor was cast, Vincent lifted his other hand, his tattoo flared to life once more. "Hitotsu!" The energy rope shot out, quickly wrapping around the Shinigami's waist. Vincent gave it as hard a pull as he could, tears welling up in his eyes from the pain the exertion caused, but he kept pulling anyway. He needed to get the boy out of the way, and get some space between them, or the brute would have a deadly advantage over the boy.

A split second before the first (and second, and third) of the old man’s strikes could hit home, a rope of tightly-woven kidou energy coiled around Mitsu’s waist. With an almighty jerk that knocked his breathe out of him, the Bakudou spell dragged him backwards – and, without thinking, Mitsu threw Ataru’s twin scrolls in front of him to act as a rudimentary shield.

The redhead hit the ground in an awkward tumble, rolled backwards, and was back on his feet; at his behest his scrolls shot forward, threading themselves between and around the one-eyed human’s ankles and pulling taut. Wishing he had a second to spare his shinigami helper a word of thanks (because whatever the old man had just done, he wasn’t so sure he would’ve been able to counter in time), Mitsuyo gave voice to his kidou, instead.

“Mitsu!” he said, adrenaline turning the chant into an angry, vicious snarl. As swiftly as it had dissipated, the blanket of dark fell over the forest again. Mitsu wasn’t finished, though. “Weight of the World on your shoulders, suffer your punishment.” He held his ground as he cast, fighting to keep his opponent at bay by sheer force of will and the scrolls locked around the old man’s legs. “Bear the Heavens or all shall fall. No rest for the weary, no sleep for the wretched. Bakudou number twenty-five, Atlas!”

A cloud of distorted energy, rippling, silent and nearly-invisible within Break of Dusk’s shadows, formed above the human’s head.

Mildly surprised by the lack of contact in his attacks, Antai growled as he fought against the myriad of bindings as they fell into place across his body. Leg and limb bound, he felt his frustration come to a boil as the blackness settled once more around him. Now blind, and his limbs useless, he could see no other route. A final resort, but this was to be his last hunt, after all. And he meant for those black jackets to come with him. No cost is too high if one is willing to pay it all.

“Have it your way.” He grunted, his deep baritone grating against the swell of darkness around him. “Makes no matter. I will set the balance.”

He didn’t have much to give, maybe having a half of his reserve still intact. But it would be more than enough. The black jackets had used quite a bit as well. Releasing what spiritual power was left him, Antai allowed it to boil out of him in a massive rush, pushing it all into the center of his body. Then as simply as exhaling, he let it fly free.

“Join me in the End.” He rumbled, quickly fading into dust as he was caught up in his own wave of power.

Vincent's eyes widened in fear. He's gonna blow! his subconscious seemed to be screaming at him. You have to move now!

With a grim sense of determination, Vincent launched into a Shunpo, hoping to put as much distance as he could between himself and the coming explosion. As he landed, doing his best to ignore the intense pain in his side, Vincent pulled out his Zanpakutou. He knew it was far from the best solution, but it would be the fastest way to protect himself from the psychotic man's final assault. He just hoped his mind could weather the darkness long enough.

"Mourn, Insontis!" Just as the searing energy erupted from Antai, reducing him to nothing, Vincent's sword shone a brilliant gold, dividing itself into strips of energy that quickly spiraled around the boy's forearms, transforming into a pair of bracers, etched with the strange, mystic markings of its predecessor. The little guardian knelt down and covered his head with his arms as a dome of the strange markings formed around him. And then, in an instant, he was engulfed in a burning, roaring maelstrom of energy and light.

Before the fire could catch hold of the boy – before the churning, violent shock wave of rapidly-expanding energy had a chance to strike in full – another body threw itself over Vincent, covering his back and shielding him from the worst of the explosion. The red and green scrolls of Ataru formed a tight weave around the two boys, held in place by force of will.

“Bakudou twenty-nine, Threshold!” Mitsu gasped, his chest heaving from the rapid burst of Shunpo he’d used to catch up to his smaller, younger-looking ally. He dropped the rest of his spells and channeled the energy into keeping Ataru between them and the explosion that threatened to burn them alive, his jaw clenched and eyes squeezed shut.

Please don’t let this kill us...

Vincent pulled himself out from under the other boy and carefully sat up. The other reaper had shielded him from the bulk of the blast, but he hadn't come out completely unscathed. Parts of his arms and legs were burned, and his robes were pretty singed as well. His entire body ached from being exposed to so much raw energy, albeit in a much smaller portion. Normally such an attack would hurt a lot less, but he still hadn't recovered enough from his coma.

After a moment of coughing to clear his throat and lungs, Vincent smiled at his saviour pleasantly. "Well, that was fun... Thanks for saving me." The guardian paused, realizing that in all the chaos this was actually the first time they had a chance to talk. "I'm Vincent Kreuz, former vice captain of the Arcane Specialists." The boy held out his tattooed right arm to shake hands, and to prove he was at least a former member of the division. "Pleasure to meet you."
