Though the exit was sealed off for now, the vice-captain of the Third was fairly sure the caverns had already started to be filled with ocean water – a fact only further reinforced by the sudden sounds of waves splashing and rocking against the inner-cave’s walls.

Turning to face those who had safely managed to get out, she scanned the room for a good half a minute before saying anything, but even then it took her a while to get her words across.

Throwing her gaze upwards for a split moment she sighed rather audibly. Please be safe, Lilith... Okamii-san.

“Right!” she yelled across the group, garnering the attention of those who were with her. “As you may have heard, or noticed, Maikeru-taichou’s bold attempt at erupting a volcano underwater has made a gap in the outer-wall resulting in ocean water coming in at an insane rate.

“That mean we have a few things ahead of us right now: first, we need to make sure if having breached the cavern made our communications work again. We need to find out if we can contact anyone who is still within the maze!

“Secondly we need to contact Soul Society to see if they can’t help us plan an escape route, and lastly... but perhaps most importantly: we need to make absolutely sure that those still trapped in the maze get all the time they need to leave there and join us in the real world again!

“We will not let them perish, shinigami and human alike. Do I make myself clear?”

Reaching inside of her shihakushou she took out a denreishinki and tried to contact the only person she could think of at the moment, Haresuno.

[285]

So, you heard Will. We need to make sure that those still in the maze do not die, as well as establishing contact with them as well as Soul Society.

GET ON IT GUISE.

From somewhere within the cavern of Dunan a single sound echoed through the glass container holding the Founder-Captain.

Ring, ring. Ring, ring.

Ring, ring. Ring, ring.

Ring, ring. Ring, ring.

But no answer came, no move to silence the ringing.

Only the solemn silence between each ring and the next.

In the field of wires and tubes, shattered glass coffins and upturned rocks from an all too recent battle, the peaceful resting face of the Fifth Division’s Captain lay tranquil. His lids closed behind silver-wire frame glasses, and black bangs framing his angular face.

It was the most peaceful sleep he had had in months. Even subjected to the labyrinth of Raifuku’s.

He was peaceful.

He was still.

Waiting. Waiting in that silence between each ring and the next.

As one or two more minutes passed, Nana gave up her attempts at getting a response. Why wasn’t he responding? Why wasn’t he picking up his phone? There could only be two answers: either the communications still weren’t back up... or something happened to his phone whilst in the maze.

Although the former seemed more likely, the vice-captain of the Third had high hoped for the latter.

Turning to her companions she said, “He won’t pick up.” It wasn’t so much a question as a remark, or even a demand. It was just a sentence, and she wasn’t even sure what she meant by it anymore. “That can only mean one of two things: either communications are still blocked... or his phone was destroyed inside of the maze, causing a paradox.

Tch,” she cursed under her breath as she began to pace back and forth within the cavern, looking at her phone ever so often.

“Only option I see is trying to contact anyone else still in the maze. Hisoka-san,” she turned her attention towards the Mystic, but was a bit hesitant before motioning for him to take out his phone, “would you be so kind as to contact Adelaide Pierce, Third Seat of the Tenth Division? I would do it myself, but after our last meeting in the maze, I’m afraid if I contact her now she would... probably freak out like there was no tomorrow...

“And we really can’t have that. So, while you do that, could you...” she was looking at Tsubaki now and hesitated for a moment before continuing, “...look, I know chances are you can’t come back with us. I know you’re a bit sick and tired of all our self-righteousness, but we’re not all to blame for that, and really... you're the only one I feel I can really trust.

“So, from the bottom of my heart, not as an officer of the Gotei Thirteen, but as you friend... would you be so kind as to go to where Uchiharu-taichou’s phone is ringing and make sure they get out safe and sound? I will be contacting Inuzuri-soutaichou and I will join you once that is done, okay?

"Oh, and one more thing, Ryoujin-san," she continued, turning to the Templar this time, "could you try contacting the Gotei?"

With that, she didn’t wait too long for an answer as she flipped open her denreishinki once more.

"Roger that, Nana-chan," he replied, trying to steady his footing as he could feel the tremor of the earth beneath him. So much for being away from danger briefly, huh?

As Nana gave out her orders, the Blood Templar fished into his shihakushou for his own soul phone before dialing HQ's number. It seemed like there would be a response from the other end, but the annoyed expression washing over Ryoujin's countenace disproved that assumption instantly.

ANSWER, DAMN IT! the pink-haired youth thought, pressing away on his own denreinshinki in an attempt to try and establish some sort of connection with headquarters. I knew I should have gotten the Ninth to upgrade this thing!

Although there were no enemies around them anymore, there was no guaranteeing that there wouldn't be within the next few moments, and their group had already been split with Lilith and Igasho sealing them off from danger, and Manzo still unconscious. To make matters worse, they had a bigger concern to worry about now that the entire place seemed like it would be flooded, and there was also the memory of that toxin and smoke earlier that seemed to stay in the forefront of his mind. All in all, the likelihood of getting out here in one piece along with the entirety of the forces that had arrived in Dunan was dwindling with each passing second.

"This is the Eleventh's co-third seat Ryoujin from Dunan. I don't know if this message is transmitting to ya guys, but if it is, then time's short. You can reprimand me about my formality later, but point is we have to get the hell out of here. We need an escape route ASAP before this place completely floods!" he exclaimed. He had never really liked relying on random analysts and shinigami back in Soul Society to assist them. If Hueco Mundo and Prometheus had taught him anything, then it was that these types of things never seemed to work out as one would hope.

“I’m going, too,” Manzou spoke for the first time since falling unconscious, trying to lean his weight up on both elbows and giving the Templar a false smile while his eyes were still gathering color and focus---while he was still trying to gather what had happened to Tatsunokuchi. Barely coherent and ailing or not, he couldn’t lie there and do nothing.

He spurned his legs to move, to no avail once again. A shot of pain reverberating from his center mass forced his teeth to clench together harshly. His blood began to boil in the face of his difficulties, almost involuntarily spawning the black flames along his every inch. A moment passed and the tissues in his body began to sow themselves back together---a lot slower than usual, however, and with a lot more concentration and effort demanded. So much so that his pace of breathing had doubled quickly. In a few seconds rather than split seconds, movement and vigor was returned to the Herald, but not yet enough had come to lift him solidly to his feet.

His lower back and legs still felt like wet noodles.

“I still have to deliver the Captain Commander’s message,” the Sixth Seat panted. "Ryoujin-senpai, see if they can activate the Sokyouku gate again... and see if the Kidou Corps commander can meet us there."

"When this is all over you may escort me back to Soul Society to answer for my actions. I will...what's the phrase?" The expression of pleasant nature grew thoughtful for a moment, then returned to the same placid grin. "I will go quietly, Vice-Captain Amaterasu."

The wings of alabaster appeared at her back, ready for use. "Until then, I will do everything in my power to make sure we all come out alive." With an abnormally cheerful smile and a mock salute the former Captain was off like a shot, flying through the ruptured walls and ceilings of the caverns listening intently for the sound of a ringing phone.

[109]

Soooo....
What am I doing? I know, looking for Hare's celly & the people still matrixed, but what is the environment I'm heading into?

[PM] [Dunan] Week ---: Savior's March

Stride by uneasy stride, Manzou scraped his way down the corridor. His skin was blackened by flakes of ash throughout, specks of molten rock still lodged in his chest and everywhere else, and by the burns of the bullet wounds littering his body that had yet to be fully healed. The flames of his basilisk spirit coated his skin, slowly mending him and leaving him no more distinguishable than the deep shadows he was immersed in---even more akin to the black toxin he’d just laid his eyes on moments ago. His already-marred shoulder dragged roughly against the stone facade and buttressed him where his legs barely could, the skin being torn and put back together over and over again.

Stubbornly, the Herald pressed forward.

In his other hand was Tatsunokuchi, gripped firmly and as ready as both onyx irises were as he retraced the steps that led the group to the now-collapsed chamber of Raifuku’s infernal weapon. Manzou reached the egress of the corridor and his eyes immediately found the wooden arch of what he believed was the Sokyouku world-piercing gate.

Without moving his eyes from it, he brought his denreishinki from out of his hakama and pressed the communication button on the side.

“This is Kagetoki Manzou,” he panted into the small speaker. “Sixth seat of the Third. We need a route out of here, asap. Get the Kidou Corps to re-open the senkaimon.”

[235/235]

This is for me, Gorou, and Fanny I believe (if he's with me, trying to get this senkaimon open). Talked with sensei about it beforehand.

Still, the biting words of Akane’s illusion rang in Gorou’s ears. The sound of his steps echoing in the massive corridor reminded him where he was and why, but his anger had gotten the better of him. Every bone in his body itched for a fight, and he couldn’t stop thinking about driving his blade into the psychopath that had put him there.

Ahead, a familiar presence came into being which the angry soldier immediately recognized as belonging to Manzou. Some sense of calm could have washed over him at the sight of his friend, but there was nowhere for his rage to go. As soon as he came close enough to see his comrade, he stopped short and, unconsciously, rested his hand on Gunshin’s hilt.

“Manzou,” he growled, “why have you come to this place,” he meant to ask a question but thanks to his anger caused it to sound more like a demand. The wild-eyed and battle-crazed look was still on his face, but it was different. There was darkness to it. He felt like he did when he hunted down and killed Juzo back in Edo. All he could think about was finding the object of his anger and watching it die before his eyes.

His counterpart snapped his eyes toward the footsteps outside his field of vision.

“G...,” the Herald spoke before his shoulder slipped from the wall, taking his balance down with it. “Gorou...”

His concerns over the whereabouts and well-being of his friend rushed to the surface and were allayed just as quickly as Manzou laid his eyes on Gorou. That relief itself, too, was smothered as the pain of his wounds surged again and forced his eyes and jaw shut harshly. He groaned, managing to lock the sanguine-haired Herald’s gaze after a moment---pausing and assaying his friend’s words and unnatural temperament. He’d seen that look in Gorou’s eyes only once before, though not to its present degree.

“I’m here,” Manzou began, regaining a bit of his strength with every word, skepticism hidden in his exhausted expression. “because of that... bastard, Raifuku. We’re all here.” He made it to his feet, still panting and needing the strength of the wall to stand. “Did you... just get out of there?”

Hearing the name had set Gorou further over the edge than he’d expected. It didn’t help that he saw his companion beaten and battered. He took a few steps forward, but he was cautious with his position and maintained his distance.

“I’ve fought and killed and died, and yet I remain, as you do. It’s time to put an end to this game,” he tightened his grip on Gunshin’s handle, “Raifuku needs to die,” he tightened his expression.

The intensity in his tone, the apprehension in his steps, the overall unfamiliarity of the man standing before him put him less at ease than closer to the same level of ire---if only a little closer. For all the strife that he himself had experienced, it seemed his friend took more scars---none of them apparent---with him from that false reality than he did.

For a moment, the raven-haired man’s mind diverged from where it was a moment ago, from where it needed to be.

“...who’d you find in there?”

Hearing the question took him back, and he slid through the spectrum he’d felt when he’d seen his wife in that mirror. None of it made it through to his face, he forced it back and just got angrier.

“Her name was Akane,” he looked away for a moment. Despite his resolve to keep his composure, his voice still shook with a combination of grief and anger.

“But that is in the past,” he looked back at Manzou and his grimace returned in full force, “all I have here is death and I mean to bring it to Raifuku.”

The fire in Gorou’s eyes engulfed Manzou and yet didn’t reach him at the same time. The concern of and curiosity over what exactly happened to him within the maze brushed abrasively against everything else running through his head and the agony of his wounds, the former falling to the latter. As soon as his thoughts were centered again, the Herald forcibly regathered his resolution.

“As much as I understand that,” he said, the static of the phone’s speaker hissing in the background. “We have to get everyone out of here before this place floods.” After slowly re-sheathing Tatsunokuchi, Manzou gimply pushed himself from the other side of the corridor opening to the next. His eyes narrowed and gathered what light and clarity they could in the dark distance, finding the two far-off corridors. “There might be... a control room or something... that’ll free everyone from that damn dream world. All I know is... we can’t wake them up... right now.”

A distraction was the last thing Gorou needed, and he was fully prepared to argue or even split up just to satisfy his blood thirst. He shifted his stance and something in his pocket shifted, and he immediately remembered what he’d brought. Even though it had been obliterated in the illusion, he knew that he’d still brought the only thing that could keep him from going completely berserk.

“So be it,” he grunted as he reached in and pulled out the cigarette he’d brought, “come what may. I’ll assist you,” he lit the cigarette up and took in a long puff. The taste and smell of tobacco took the edge off. Even though he was angry and he wished so dearly for his hands to be drenched in Raifuku’s blood, he could wait just a little bit longer.

“Kagetoki Manzou!” she shouted after the raven-haired officer, but despite his battered appearance he was soon out of her reach – well, it was more like that she had more pressing matters than having to babysit one of the most stubborn of officers she had ever met.

“Damnit!” she exclaimed as her burnt fist punched a hole in the stone wall next to her. “What is up with everyone? Do they all think this is still some kind of game? And where the hell are Maikeru-taichou and that prisoner?”

Sighing audibly, she shook her head in disappointment and disappeared into a flash step, going after Tsubaki. No longer than perhaps five minutes did it take Nana to find the former Templar Queen, and as soon as she appeared right next to the woman she began to drag her companion along in her slipstream.

"Change of plans," she stated in a matter of fact tone of voice as she sped up.

Beaks, if you see this, we're going to bust us some corridors.

While the mutual resentment towards Raifuku became almost palpable, all a particular pink-haired soul reaper could hear was the static through his denreishinki, and Manzou's plea for assistance fall on deaf ears just like his earlier attempt had. After finally turning to face the Walker, he finally took note of a scruffy-haired shinigami that had stumbled upon them, a hulk of one at that who seemed to be friends with Manzou.

Another of Nana's. Well shit, I've only ever seen one of her training sessions with her division, but if she can get a result like that, I don't think I wanna find out just what she can really do, he thought idly before returning his focus back to what was weighing heavily on his mind earlier.

"If headquarters don't respond soon, which I'm really beginning to believe at this point, we've gotta do something. Just what kind of message did the Soutaichou even assign you to deliver, Manzou?

From the shadows they moved in unison. They moved not with gravity, not with haste. If at all, it looked as if they did not heed the necessity of the calls that came through. This was not the case, not by a long shot.

One by one they came into view atop the grand pillars that housed the greatest of all Senkaimon: the first, the only.
Just like last time there were twenty of them, but unlike the previous summoning... six of them would go through.

More than enough.

Overhead the sky was clear, clearer than it had been in a very long while. For the Kidoushuu it did not matter, for their duty lay elsewhere. For those who wanted to return, for those who had to return, though...

It was a most welcoming sight indeed.

Clad in black – as was standard for most of Soul Society’s enforcers -, all they had to differentiate themselves from regular shinigami was the fact that their robes were of a slightly tighter build with the robes near the bottom even going so far as to wrap tightly around their ankles.

To safeguard their anonymity they had white hoods covering their faces with only slits for the eyes, and a trailing cloth all the way down past the waist.

As they positioned themselves in front of their designated pillars they clasped their hands together and began to chant.

Soon enough the gate began to open itself, before finally fully revealing itself.

Having learned from their last encounter with the first Senkaimon, they lowered their hands and stepped through the gate one by one.

The eldest of the group – though, honestly, who could really tell with those white hoods? – flung open his denreishinki.

“The First Senkaimon is open, as per request,” he responded in a monotone.

Just as he was about to close his denreishinki, Nana appeared out of the blue with Tsubaki in tow. If there was ever a moment in a Kidoushuu’s long-lived career in which he or she would be surprised at something this would probably it.

They did a damn great job at concealing it though, if that was even the case.

Putting his denreishinki away the man bowed slightly, “Amaterasu-fukutaichou.”

What now? Nana though to herself as she came to a halt near the opened Senkaimon gate. Well... this puts a damper on a lot of things.

“I suppose this would be a good time to explain the situation, no?” she attempted her opening sentence. She really wasn’t sure what to make of this sudden appearance at all, had Ryoujin’s call reached them again? Or perhaps... was it Manzou?

Leave it to him to do something outrageous.

Seeing Manzou, Ryoujin and Gorou in the back of her eyes she turned to them for a moment.

“Kagetoki-san, Arashi-san, Yoshinaga-san.” It was not the voice of someone trying to be nice, she was being the commander she was supposed to be. “Seeing as how Kagetoki-san enjoys ignoring orders, and thinking he can save the world with his limped-out body, I would like it if the three of you would go back through the Senkaimon gate.

“I believe you had something you needed to relay?” She was looking intently at Manzou’s battered and broken body now. “I suggest you do it as soon as possible. Or, at least before you bleed out from blood loss, okay? After that, do whatever the hell you can’t not do.

“We’ll speak again when this is all said and done.

“Arashi-san, Yoshinaga-san, please do be careful and make sure he doesn’t do anything stupid, okay?”

With that she flipped open her own denreishinki and dialed Lilith’s number.

[610/1465]

Anyone who wishes to leave may now do so, enjoy.

Due to merging of the two threads (Savior's March and this one), timing became a little derpy because of the time at which the different posts were written.

As a thumb of rule, expect that due to Nana's speed she entered the main room at the same time as the Kidoushuu, Tsubaki in tow due to slipstream reversal.

Gorou should've been able to see them, but was busy chatting up Manzou and Ryoujin just as they entered after Nana.

So this all happens literally within seconds of each other.

[Took some liberty and RP'd Hisoka here. Really just using him as a vector for Lil.]

Hisoka.
The Tenth Division Captain’s voice suddenly resonated in the mystic’s mind. This is your captain. He was quiet for a moment as he listened to what Maikeru-taichou had to say.

Once the message was complete, the boy's eyes scampered to find Nana’s when he cried, “Amaterasu-fukutaichou!” The rose-shaped tattoo on his forehead shined brilliantly as he ran toward her and described, “I just got a message from Maikeru-taichou. She and Igasho are alive, but they’re in a small room with Raifuku and two other humans. That's why she's not picking up her phone.

“He’s not telling her anything, but she wants to find a way to get the others out. I just told her that we secured an exit with the Kidoushuu, but she has no intention of leaving that room.”

Hearing Nana’s voice snapped Gorou’s attention away from Manzou, but only due to his surprise at her presence. Anger had kept his mind busy, preventing him from noticing her or anybody else before they’d announced themselves.

“Amaterasu-dono,” he muttered and exhaled a cloud of smoke, “wh—” he cut himself off when the young Mystic piped up. Bits of irritation flared up at the outburst, but he was willing to let the burning tobacco keep his mind at ease.

That task was made considerably harder, if not impossible, when Hisoka mentioned Raifuku’s name. There was somebody in the room that knew where the madman was, and at that moment, that was all that mattered.

“Where,” he ignored the others and slowly approached the boy and the group he’d gathered with, “where is he,” his voice seemed calm but was tempered by rage. Orders from Nana, or Manzou’s battle-torn state, or even the accord he’d just made all paled in comparison to being led directly to Raifuku.
165 [688]

Almost just as quickly as Gorou probed for answers, Ryoujin flared his spiritual pressure, making sure that the larger Walker noticed.

Just how many times had he seen this? In fact, hadn't he also fallen victim to bring fueled by the thought of revenge? Personal grudges against Raifuku had resulted in the human making fools of them time and time again. The last time they tried playing hero they were pronounced dead in Hueco Mundo, and the collars that most of them had were a testament of that. Before Nana could reproach her subordinate, Ryoujin spoke up.

"Gorou, was it? We don't have time to find Raifuku ourselves. As much as I'd love to kill him and send him through the reincarnation cycle endlessly, that will have to wait. This place is going to flood soon, and we've gotta deliver the Soutaichou's message, whatever it is, back to Soul Society. And the only one who knows is Manzou, who at this point looks like he'll pass out or worse yet die if his wounds aren't treated."

I would have thought you would have been raring to find Raifuku as soon as possible, his zanpuktou spirit piped up.

Yeah well, Raifuku's already made a mockery of me a few times already and if this means we can save everyone from drowning in this place, then that's just gonna have to be the way things go, he thought.

Then, for the first time since exiting the molten battlefield that had once been a room, the Prisoner captain made a move. He reached out and grabbed the one named Hisoka.

"Where is the room? I will go pull her out of there myself if that's what it takes. I swear to god, if she thinks she is getting off that easily she has another thing coming."

His grip was like a vice. He had kept quite due to worry. It had taken everything he had not to throw his charge down earlier and return to where Lilith was, and now that an extraction option was open, he was no longer responsible for them. Now, he would focus on making sure that they would come back alive.

“I... I don’t know, sir,” Hisoka nervously sputtered out, terrified under the powerful giant’s grip.

“She won’t tell me.” His blue eyes were brimming with fear, terrorized at having to face the prison lord but equally afraid to risk looking away. “She just wa-wants all of us to focus on trying to save the others still in the maze. Even th-though we can’t get them out of the pods directly, she’s convinced there’s some other way.”

His tattoo glowed brighter and brighter by the second, becoming more radiant with its luminescent glow. “And she has a message specifically for you, sir...”

Hisoka paused, trying to shift around since he began to feel numb under Ishin’s grasp. Nervously, the boy offered an awkward and semi-pathetic smile.

“...She says to put me down.€

"I'm fine," Manzou groaned, the words a rebuttal to his Templar comrade, coming with a stubbornly-defiant growl. "It's taking a little longer than usual, but my wounds won't be a problem..." The tendons tethered to his knees cried out for an end to his prideful display, begged him to do what he needed to and not what I wanted to---or for him to sit down at the very least. His eye didn't meet Nana's, a product of that same rigidness and his having been desensitized to her jabs after all those that had preceded her last cutting remark.

As much ignominy as there was, undeniable truth was spoken just the same: Manzou couldn't go any further.

"I don't know what his message even means," the Herald said, speaking to but not removing his eyes from the stone floor to look at Arashi. "but I believe the Commander Inuzuri might know something about that false reality... and I suppose that the Kidou chief does, too." Slowly pushing himself away from the wall's embrace and standing steadily on his own two feet, Manzou made his way purposefully toward the light of the gate, not giving anyone eye contact and sparing them of his melancholy. He recited Sayis' words with volume and clarity, stopping just before the portal and turning his head halfway over his shoulder. "The secret of redemption lies in remembrance...

"...that mean anything to you guys?"

Ordinarily the pressure might have been enough to force Gorou to relent, or at least indicate that he oughtn’t pursue his current train of thought. However, as he moved his head and locked eyes with Arashi he made no effort to back down. What little good the cigarette had done to calm him immediately went to waste.

“I don’t care,” he bore and clenched his teeth like an animal, “I don’t care about floods or messages. I’m going to hunt that madman down,” he squeezed Gunshin’s handle until its lock popped, “and you will not stop me, boy,” he pushed the blade further out of its scabbard. Adrenaline pumped through his veins, and suddenly it was incredibly difficult for him to think about anything but combat, yet again.

There was a toxic little lust for battle in the back of his mind, one that slowly convinced the bloodthirsty herald that combat with anybody would be just as good as fighting Raifuku.
161 [849]

"He may not, but I most certainly will."

Ishin had snapped to his senses and let go of the boy. After taking several deep breaths to calm his nerves then mumbling an apology, he had started towards the Senkaimon only to notice the spiritual pressure being released. Deciding to investigate, he found Gorou and Ryoujin. He stepped in front of them both, putting himself between them and the exit. The only way they could go would be back to the gate. Or through him.

"Your orders, Yoshinaga, were to return to Soul Society. Are you disoabeying them? Because if so, that is punishable by time in the Seventh, among other things. So that would basically mean you would be spending time getting to know the inside of one of my cells very well. Does that strike your fancy? Or are you going to turn back now?"

Ishin still had yet to release any of his spiritual pressure. In fact, he seemed like the calm point in the flow of Ryoujin's reiatsu and Gorou's rage filled energy. His mouth was an expressionless line, his eyes cold as ice. He waited for the other man to make the move.

WC: 197

"Hmm?" Ryoujin mused, watching as things unfolded rather quickly. With a dismissive motion and sigh, the pink-haired youth allowed his spiritual pressure to recede. Stepping the other way, he stopped before the portal like Manzou had. Tilting his head so that he could see Gorou, the Blood Templar shrugged. If words would not strike a chord, then there was no point in wasting one's breath.

"I'm not here to stop you; in fact, if you're intent on putting your personal affairs over the importance of the lives of everyone that came to Dunan with us, then go ahead. You make the choice. It's as Ishin said. Put the blade away, or did you already forget what you said before? 'Come what may, I'll assist you.' You're not doing anyone any good by openly threatening anyone that obstructs you from Raifuku. If the entirety of our forces couldn't even take down Prometheus, what makes you think you alone can kill the man who let that monster loose?" he said simply, leaving it at that.
