Kazimir’s adrenaline surged, every flash of red light seeming to suddenly slow down, the carnelian glow creeping along the metal face of the automaton he had already destroyed twice. His heavily muscled arm swung out in an instant, forearm slamming the robotic arm out and away before punching straight ahead, spikes of red extending past the knuckles, churning and sharpened reiatsu rushing toward the curled fist as it slammed into the machine’s chest, through it.

The nerves over his eye twitched, reacting in an instant, as much on instinct as on the glimpse of a leveled barrel, throwing his entire upper body to the left. Caleb’s lance of pure focused destruction came, exceeding even the Russian’s heightened senses, appearing as a sudden beam of searing light that ripped through the machine’s head, the entire frame turning to slag around the hole. Skin charred, flesh bubbled and blackened, a streak along the right side of Kazimir’s face darkening to red and then black as the laser passed less than an inch from his face.

Then it was over and the pulses of red returned to normal. Still with feet firmly planted, Kazimir ripped his arm from the robot and straightened, only to grunt in pain as the ball of condensed reiryoku slammed into the fresh burn wound, the sudden flash of pain overwhelming him and throwing the Russian to one knee.

Blood seeped from the burn wounds, the entire right side of Kazimir’s face black or red, even hair singed away, the tips of the remaining strands also blackened. Eyes flicked over toward the fallen robot – destroyed for sure this time – and then spotted the sniper downed. “Mistake,” Kazimir growled as his cold emotionless eyes turned on Tokiwa. Suddenly snapping into motion, Kazimir threw himself back to his feet, grabbing the sword in both hands and hurling it at the vizard.

The scythe of crimson arced high overhead before Kazimir’s fists tightened on the rattling chain as it sped past. The sword sliced downward, cleaving across the young vizard’s torso before slamming hard into the ground, blood pooling around the blade.

Chest heaving, the Russian finally turned toward Tatiana. Instead of attacking her, though, the Russian growled out, “Te current time?”

Trying another switch, Colin found yet another dead outlet. The whole building was in a blackout, and the emergency generators hadn’t kicked in. That or they were inoperable, but hopefully just off. Without that, he could just try to check over any physical issues. That would take too long.

Something was wrong. Not a noise he could hear, but one that had stopped. The gunfire was utterly stopped after the explosive surge of energy. Of the five reiatsu signatures outside, two felt far weaker than they should have. Worse yet was he knew that was Rune and Caleb. Even the malignant feeling reiatsu of the vizard was straining now. Only the two Russians, both reverberating and weaker, remained.

“Hang on Tati, just stall him,” Colin whispered, only to begin following conduits in the ceiling. Maybe they would lead to the roof and the backup generators. To keep his mind off possibly impending doom he cracked into the local cellular network with the device in his jacket. Sure the exterior looked plain enough. Inside was a hodgepodge of bits that made it something only he could use in various ways.

Tapping into cellular voice channels seemed a logical first try, but they were down. Probably due to various people congesting all of the lines, assuming they could get one. Even the data lines were down. Local wifi gave nothing beyond the local routing, internet DHCP was giving no hits. The whole day was a full on local internet outage, what a nightmare.

He had only a single alternative given the circumstances. What a shame that the latency was always atrocious. He flicked a small antenna through the side of the phone, and isolated a useable satellite frequency. With a sigh the Irishman began hijacking Bitcoin mining, a past time he did from time to time. Plus nothing was wrong with a bit of a slush fund, his already a few hundred coins in size.

“Time to talk, I think. Did you happen to bring any Vodka? I could use a drink,” Tatiana spoke clearly in Russian raised her rifle from being zeroed in. Rune’s machination was torn asunder like tissue paper, and Caleb appeared to be near dead in a pool of his own blood. Even the vizard they brought along was now impaled by Kazimir’s oversized blade.

Hurry up, Colin, and call in help, she thought desperately. If Kazimir’s goal was their deaths, she didn’t know what she could do to stop his onslaught of unstoppable fury. She leaned upon the side of the window sill, still several stories above the broken street.

“Do not toy with me, woman,” the mercenary barked out harshly, switching to fluent Russian. Huffing disgustedly, Kazimir yanked on the heavy chain of his sword, grabbing the haft of the immense weapon with a grunt. Rather than wait on the woman’s response, he stormed over toward Caleb’s fallen form. The Russian grabbed the sniper’s collar and yanked him up, blue eyes scanning rapidly before snatching at the man’s wrist instead. Grunting he dropped the sniper back to the ground and turned toward Tatiana.

The heavy sword lifted high into the air and then settled heavily on the giant’s shoulders. “You are lucky,” he declared coldly. “I do not entertain thoughts of overtime.”

With no further explanation, Kazimir turned and began walking away, blood still dripping from the tip of his greatsword and squelching in his footsteps. “... and I haven't been paid enough to kill such fools.â

Confusion painted across Tatiana’s face. The moment Kazimir picked up Caleb she tensed and readied to fight. All for nothing, he was moving away. The Russian girl waited for him to vanish a few blocks away, then sprung down from her perch.

“Toki, if you can hear me, try to stop Rune’s bleeding!” she barked at the fallen Vizard. After all, shinigami were hardy enough, a Vizard with their mask on was an entirely different beast. Impaled once, and already fighting back, surely this wouldn’t be too much more for the horned demon girl.

Grabbing her left sleeve and tearing it off, Tatiana moved to patch up what she could for Caleb. Far overhead, the spin-up from several generators echoed over the quiet street.

“I’ll just be a few more minutes to get at least radio ranges to spec, keep anyone injured stabilized!” Colin’s voice, amplified by the cocktail of Cerberus drugs, boomed downwards from the roof.

Sliding away from the precipice the Irishman made his way down to the various consoles that he needed to bypass. Blood spikes were a new one in his IT manual, no matter the issue he knew that this was now just another day in the office. With a resigned sigh Colin un-slung the bag of tools and spare parts off his back.

Just another day in the office, like any other.
