Grades are due by 11:59 PM EST on Tuesday, 03/03/15.

Pls, Thread, pls.

Raph + 100 bouns
CnD: 184 * 2 plot = 368
Individually, this thread felt busy since near everyone was trying to handle more than one character. That was in sharp contrast to Prophet, which had a large influx of characters. That led to a lot of doing multiple characters per turn.

For someone that I hadn't seen before, I am surprised that Sid disappeared. Will he be the guy that breaks the AnO out of jail?

As for Annora, that was a fine confrontation with the Orator, and I'm impressed that she (maybe partially) convinced him to stand down. It probably had to be Annora since no PC's were fighting for the Conexus. NPC-wise, it was mostly Nisi doing all the work. The small amount of characters, while disappointing for participation, probably gave for a more focused collab compared to, say, prophet.

Shoot the Sheriff: 150 * 2 plot = 300
Whoa, we have a badass in here. This thread was fun, mostly because Zephyrus is practically an action hero. The impact for this thread felt less than Cease and Desist and Prophet, probably due to the people involved. Was Furi the only PC in there? But yeah, this one felt like the least important of the three threads.

What I am surprised with is that the AnO lost on all three fronts. The big boss is going to have to step in and set his people right.

Other comment. Man, you and Will must have 100k words together already.

Nobody Shoots the Sheriff [198/224]

Minja. Word counts. Please. I don’t care if you do it every turn (I tend to not) but make sure you have a final at the end of the thread.

Hmm, I'm kind of confused with what Hikaru's whole motivation was in this thing. Like, he's there somehow just chilling even though the entire place is on lockdown? He's apparently unaware of one of one of the most important people in Terminus? He somehow missed pretty much every important plot development announced to the public (like who ANO are?). And then his first reaction is to just attack the person who spent most of the time telling people to stand down...?

Like, I mean if you want Hikaru to really be one of the down-right stupidest people here... good on you? But it took some suspensions of like any sort of commonsense to make any of this make sense. Also, is this just Hikaru from HD ported over... as a pirate? And on that note, this gate is like teeming with guards and police officers. Why would a pirate just be hanging out there. Does he want to get arrested?

Did he actually say Yeargh?

I just left this with more questions than I had at the beginning. If you want to roll with Hikaru not having any sort of sense, go for it... just don't be surprised when he eventually gets killed... or worse.

Also, grammar wise you had a bunch of typos. For example, when you complete a sentence with a period, please remember to put a space after it.

Berri
Sworn [227/229]

Oho, finally figuring out what's happening with his bounty. Interesting that he's deciding to turn himself in. I'm curious to see what the outcome of that action will be. Interesting chapter overall though, lots of introspection weaved between the dialogue created an interesting dynamic. It sort of gave it this sort of esoteric feeling, that gave it a unique tone.

My only quip is that the pacing did seem to flux throughout. There was this slow build at the beginning from the introspection and scenery which rapidly picked up once the conversation began. However, the introspection at time did seem a bit more drawn out, especially when it occurred after someone talked. Where I expected an immediate response, it was drawn out a bit. Not a big deal, it's just a balance that needs to be struck. Good job!

Cease and Desist [165/169]

El shows up like the american cavalry with a Repulsor. I'm kind of sad he didn't show up earlier, since there was a nice riff going on between Annora, El and Keydis. The writing was solid once you joined the collab and your description of abilities and his reaction to Keydis' vistra activating was interesting. If he had come in earlier, I would have really liked to read his impression on the events that occurred at the beginning.

My only main hang up was on the late entry. While it's fine when these PM threads are set up all open for people to leave and join, in general it tends to be a bit jarring if the other writers don't know before hand. While that was more for the non-Orator bout, it did catch me off guard a bit and I was worried I would have to rewrite something initially (I didn't but ukno).

Hello Shrub, I totally know you and who you are and what you write and all about your character...*checks notes*...Raa..sss...uuuull. Haha. yeah. T-that guy!

What a.... *clears throat*....p-erson...he is! Quite a character! He...exists! And... *checks*...Speaks! With words and everything!

Ahem.

I kid, actually. Even not knowing who dafuq Rassuul was before reading your chip-chap, it wasn’t really hard at all to get the gist of the shenanigans he’s up to. Tho IDK what his problem would be: fireworks are the most safe thing in all of history. Nothing safer.

I don’t have a whole bushelload to say about Rassle-Dassle here, but I waaannna say it’s because not a ton happens in the chap? Goes to place -> demands to see someone -> REJECTED -> leaves.

If anything, I’d say it would’ve been more...interesting? Engaging? If you’d written out more details and interactions between characters. A lot of the words in here are you describing ‘rassuul got this job and then he had this thought so he went here and did this thing’ -- even if it’s something you wrote more on in a past chapter, describing things so...brusquely?...here made me feel more like I was reading a quick character synopsis or ‘Last Time, On: Life of Russuul!’ than a chapter describing events that you are currently focusing on.

Give me more details! Describe the surroundings! The sights, the smells, the sounds, the people in the background, those little irrelevant shits! Paint out these character interactions instead of just mentioning that they happened (all I got was a tiny babby scene with him annoying poor Receptionist-chan, and that was the highlight of the babbychap). YA KNOW? WHAT I MEAN?

N-No?

Well god why are you even listening to me DO I LOOK LIKE I CAN EVEN GRADE I MEAN GEEZ

the fact that he spoke in third person made me haha

I will say two things here (let’s not lie I’ma end up saying way more than that but STILL--)

One: IDK if you’ve gotten much better or it’s been a while since I actually read YOUR writing or what but the writing quality in this chap was prty great. Like the sentence structure and grammarz and tone and mood and yada yada whatnot and whathave you.

Two: God damn this is a darkass motherfucker of a plot son. All this Parents Wanna Kill Me And/Or Sacrifice My Sexy Featherhair Body To Spider Queens shiiiit is...

well..

I was gonna say ‘too dark for my palette’ but then I realized that a lot of my plots involve horribly assaulting and/or torturing my own characters so you know what, that isn’t quite true.

I won’t lie, I REALLY LIKED THIS CHAPTER: there wasn’t exactly any drama or action in it -- more of an in-between chapter that’s part of a (much) bigger plot -- but it was still captivating. Interesting. It made me wonder where the plot started, and where it’s going, and where Rosa will end up and also necromancy is a bit creepy this just in.

So. YA KNOW. Good job rob. Have all the points, just.

here. /shovels them into your lap

here, have them, TAKE THEM AND GO BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND

Cease and Desist [1,870]
[187 / 187]
[374 / 374] {PM}

Like Hiren-Hiren-Bo-Biren said above, I do believe (and as I’m pretty sure you encouraged from the get-go), I think I really shoulda hopped into this thread earlier. SO MUCH HAPPENED, and it all seemed to happen rather swiftly, too. We got the Orator and Sid poppin’ up, Nisi and his demon gettin’ down to business, Anno and Key going ‘lelelelelellee!!’, and Dys’s poor guard fellows all tumbling into the action -- and all pretty much right off the bat.

That said, the back-and forth of this thread felt surprisingly follow-able and coherent when I went and reread through it. I think it was mostly my anxiety talking when I told you before that I just COULDN’T HOP IN, IT WASN’T CLEAR WHAT WAS GOING ON, etc, etc.

Keydis is literally never not fun to read when she’s rolling up her sleeves (figuratively) and going in for a brawl. I especially love how you keep action fast-paced and in-the-moment -- there’s little time for talking when Keydis is in her scuffaloo. I also superduper like how you’re working Key’s little...er...arm-metal problem into random OTHER plots and threads and just her daily doody-doody life instead of having like, A FEW CHAPS DEVOTED TO IT AND THEN ACTING LIKE NO BIG DEAL NOTHING’S CHANGED.

Orator has himself some wordy back-and-forth with the people fighting him (especially once Annora gets hold of him) -- but I got the impression that both were sort of GOING for a ‘verbal match as well as a physical one’ with you and raph’s turns.

I still find a lot of dialogue kinda jarring to an action sequence’s pace (unless it specifies the two are talking WHILE fighting or specifically stopped to exchange barbs -- otherwise the dialogue gets lost in this weird limbo-space ya know?) -- but since I still do that much worse than you and raph did in this thread, IT AIN’T LIKE I’M GUNNA PULL POINTS FOR IT. Besides, for the amount of talking-to-fighting action, it still flowed well.

If there’s something I should pull points for, er, I MISSED IT -- and it feels assinine to pull points for no reason so HERE JUST TAKE THEM ALL

God damn just everyone in AnO got their poor asses captured didn’t they

Nobody Shoots the Sheriff [1,440]
[144 / 144]
[288 / 288] {PM}

Hm.

HMMM.

Hmmhmmmm....

Is it just me or was this thread just a bit more....clusterfucky than C&D?

I AM JUST SAYING -- if I thought I had a hard time keeping track of which characters were doing what, to whom, and whereabouts, in C&D, this one I was LUCKY IF I COULD KEEP TRACK OF WHO WAS FIGHTING WHOM.

Tho I will say it might be in part because of all the characters participating, and also your part in it was prty easy to track. I think I rememberin’ you sayin’ yer turns in this were crappycrap but.

No. Just no. Shut yer dirty mouth you don’t know crappy turns clearly. I feel bad for NOT taking points from you but I still can’t think of any good legit reason to do so.

Aureax seems like an interesting character -- especially his ‘awwwshiiiiit’ realization that they’ve gone and gotten their gates mixed up. I also really liked yer secondary guy -- the uh. The SHOOTER GUY. SNIPER CHAN. I have a giant soft spot for superranged sniper-types -- especially when they’re well-written and the SHEER EFFORT AND FOCUS AND WHATNOT NEEDED for sniping is written/portrayed accurately. I will say that the poor guy having shaky fingers is probably NOT GOOD FOR SOMEONE SNIPING.

He should learn from solid snake: take lots of drugs. then shoot. /THUMBS UP

Reading all this stuff about the Astra non Obligants makes me wish I had gotten my characters more...embroiled in current events, ya might say. Even if it’s true to mosta their characters that they didn’t. Both AnO and the people rallying to TAKE THEM DOWN RAAGHHHH seem to be, so far, putting up pretty good, understandable arguments. And a conflict where it’s hard to know JUST WHO is in the right (or where both sides have perfectly good points and both sides are ALSO handling certain things poorly) is my favorite kind of conflict OF ALL.

I am kinda curious where the plot with all the now-captured AnO members is gonna lead. And by kinda I mean very. I think I like your AnO guys too much for them to be ‘antagonists’.

NEVERMIND THEIR PLOTS OR PERSONALITIES, TIME TO SHOVE ONE OF MY PEEPS INTO ANO

I can’t actually express to you in coherent, sane-person wordy-speak how pleased your word count made/makes me.

Just.

Look at it.

/contented sigh

Wha--oh. Right. Right. Like...the actual--the actual content you wrote. All One thousand, one hundred and eleven words of it.

EVEN THOUGH you apologized for disappearing in your final turn, I’m pretty sure your characters’ felt much more ingrained into the thread and its happenings than like, say...SOMEONE’S CHARACTER.

Who appeared like right as everyone was surrendering and the fight was literally over.

THAT loser.

FROM EXPERIENCE, I know the horrible agonizing pain of trying to write multiple characters at once. It seems like EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER was doing so in this thread -- but you most of all. Juggling Acer and his poor band of Conexus guards had to have been a headache, but I, at least, appreciated the inclusion of some of the guards that HAD TO HAVE BEEN THERE to add some realness to what HAD TO HAVE BEEN a chatic-ass mothaflippin’ environment to fight in. Even if Acer and co seemed to get as much intense combat in as, say, THAT ONE TAILED LOSER, their presence was certainly felt.

Poor bbs getting hurt and covering for each other was a good touch, and I definitely liked the way you wrote Acer trying his FRIGGIN BEST to keep a hand on things (even when things were basically totally out of hand with all these goddamn freelancing bounty-sporting little shits leaping into the frey). You also did a good job fleshing out the other guards with like, little brushstrokes of description -- MY FAVVIE -- and even in their limited screentime, you really got the different personalities through.

SO.

KUDOS TO YOU.

My only nitpick would POSSIBLY be that the guards seemed a bit too ‘hangy-back’? Like them tryin’ to have a parley with Key in the middle of the fiight. But seeing as Nisi was friggin’ going ALL OUT LIKE A DEMON AND ALSO WITH A DEMON, Keydis was like on top of Sid trying to punch his shit, and then Orator and Annora were dominating with their big Drama Talk, I can see how difficult it could be to work in the guards ALSO getting in on dat action without it turning into mothaflippin FRIENDLY FIRE MADNESS.

324/324 - The Devil and the Details [6480]

Okay so I wrote these comments after Freedom for a Favour and I have to ask: what the fuck is up with Kincaid? Is he an insider in the Conexus? Is he bluffing his way through this? What is actually happening with him because mid-PMs he spontaneously stopped being a rogue on the streets and started being like a dirty cop or whatever. You need to clarify this somehow man, it is really confusing.

That said, I really enjoy the contrast between the Duilius and Kincaid personas you have going on here. The sort of noir-cop drama tones you give with Duilius clash with the tongue-in-cheek haberdashery of Kincaid in a really good way. I really enjoyed the inspection of the crime scene, horrible protocol aside (really Duilius, NO GLOVES AND TOUCHING THE CRIME SCENE?) and the fluid switch to Kincaid had me really impressed.

You rolled with some of the more 'wut' stuff on Resh's part really well, and managed to make yourself the better half of the collab without being domineering. Good stuff man, I hope to see more along with at least some cursory information as to what actually happened with Kincaid being in the Conexus suddenly.

186/186 - Freedom for a Favour [3721]

This was a good number, but it left me with a few questions, not the least of which is: how exactly does this free Deni? Kincaid - although posing as an officer - doesn't really have any authority, and the instant he attempted to exert any I'm pretty sure he'd be found out. The charges of murder against a political and religious icon aren't one you can really sob story your way out of in as fledgling a judicial system as this. I hope there's a follow up on that.

Your actual mechanics are quite strong, and you get a decent back and forth going between both characters. One thing I would say is to not hesitate to shorten up the dialogue, these large chunks can make for some very samey pacing where actual conversations tend to have a choppier flow to them.

Overall I kinda wish this had led somewhere more concrete, but as what appears to be a precursor to Deni's actual release/escape plan, it works.

Resh:

274/324 - The Devil and the Details [6480]

Resh, buddy, let's chat. Today I'm gonna talk about a little thing called 'verisimilitude'. I'm not talking down to you, but in case you're not familiar with that exact terminology of it, it refers to the illusion of truth in writing. Which is to say: verisimilitude is a quality in writing, used to measure how 'real' your writing feels. I'm bringing this up because, in short, your writing lacks verisimilitude.

Let's talk about Naga: he seems to be a psychopathic murderer with little to nary conscience and appears to be motivated solely by a pay cheque and self-declared revolutionary tendencies. At no point does this appear to be justified, explained, or shown beyond casual insults and death threats.

Let's talk about how Naga acts: he's violent, smarmy, condescending, and easily angered. Once again, these are traits that are stretched to their extremes without much of a showing of why he acts the way he does.

I'm not saying these things solely to criticize, but to help you understand that characters are - for all intents and purposes - real people in writing. They have personal experiences, opinions, fears, imaginations, and conflicting motivations. A real person - unless truly psychopathic - doesn't immediately murder without a second thought. Even if that second thought is to consider efficiency or alternative options for the killing, jumping straight into the action is not something a person would actually do.

Let's say that Naga truly is psychopathic, and violently so. The context you present him under is that of a known assassin. If he's known for doing things in such an extravagant and overt manner, would he really be so respected or easily considered? Naga exists in a world that is full of real people, all with their own opinions and thoughts and questions about why an assassin would carry hand grenades.

The mechanics of your writing also need work, but the foundation needs to be there to start ironing out the edges. I want to see more of your writing, because the diversity in the characters of Post Terminus helps drive it forward. But I don't want to see you creating these collaborations and chapters where your character succeeds solely because you bend the world to suit his circumstances. Good characters are built on conflict - either within or without - show us where Naga is as a person, rather than as a flat expression of violence without purpose.

Val:

186/186 - Freedom for a Favour [3721]

As I said with Hare: I really liked this, but found it a bit anticlimactic. For negotiating terms as an alternative to execution, Deni seems awfully composed. Whether that's largely an act or if he's truly that at peace with the concept of being killed, I found it rather jarring. Similarly, the lack of actual seeming solution to Deni's predicament left me somewhat baffled. Attempting to kill the equivalent of an archbishop after allying yourself with a known terrorist group isn't really something you can sob story out of. I would definitely recommend making a follow up to this to expand more.

Your writing mechanics are strong, but you lean a bit too heavily on the 'tell' half of 'show and tell'. Take some time to pull us - as readers - to the surface. Show us Deni's physical posture and physical reactions. Hesitation can be shown physically as much mentally, and taking the time to portray your character as having physical tells to their emotions helps us relate to them.

That said, nothing terribly wrong with this that left me wanting to pull points. I hope to see more of you - and others - building out of Sound of Trumpets. I'm really digging the plot involvement you guys are dedicating yourselves to.

Vin:

**PM BONUS APPLIED** 92/92 - Nobody Shoots the Sheriff [457]

Good to see you writing, Vinny. Hope to see more from you. There's not much to really comment on here, but I do appreciate you dropping your character into the fray. I believe Will already talked to you about the small hiccup that happened, and other than that I only wish you might've taken time to throw in a description for Furi. Remember that people reading this thread won't have a pre-established image of your character in their head. Just something to remember.

Guest Grader: Hiren:

**PM BONUS APPLIED** 304/304 - Cease and Desist [1523]

Gotta say, I really appreciate you taking on this thread. Nisi and his men seem very dedicated to the task, but I was left somewhat wanting for the rank and file to chime in at least once or twice. As it stood, they more or less postured and ate shit like fantasy-Stormtroopers. Try to take a moment to give names or a passing physical trait to each character you're writing, no matter how insignificant. It shows thought and does more to lend a touch of reality to the writing.

Moving beyond that, you kept this going at a fair clip. Nisi's actions were well measured and his strong sense of justice (and seemingly short supply of mercy for criminals) helps distinguish him in the thread. I enjoyed having him call in a demon as backup, and it gave a bit more insight to the character on circumstance alone. Perhaps one other thing I'd point out is that Nisi's words were somewhat disconnected from the rest of the thread. I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, and perhaps it was, but it feels as though he's not really paying attention to what else is going on. That aside, good work and solid writing mechanics from you.
