■■■ EVIDENCE OF THINGS NOT SEEN ■■■

The arcane room appeared to be quite a departure from the rest of the sleepy town. Through a mix of bartering and begging, Zoroastres Aurora had managed to get an entire wing of Timeus’ house for rather cheap. The wizard had created a peaceful life for himself as an alchemist for the past several years. In fact the sole reason he had decided to relocate to Navale was to escape the hustle and bustle of the Arcanum in Terminus.

However, it was much to his chagrin that a swarm of demons had decided to pull him back into the lifestyle he had previously abandoned. While his skill was proficient enough to prevent the swarm from doing too much damage to the township, he was nowhere near divining the cause of the calamity.

The laicar mage stepped back, sitting down on a simple wooden chair. The room contained little furniture, just a set of three wooden chairs and a long wooden table covered in his alchemical tools. The room had been painted completely black with a rather peculiar type of paint that transformed the walls into ones similar to a blackboard. Esoteric markings in multicolored chalk decorated the walls, conduits for his magic that few in the town understood.

For his part the mage was still in the outfit he had used to fight the demons previously. His desire to determine the truth behind the events had prevented him from taking any bit of time off to even change. He wore a long crimson overcoat that extended to the floor. A pair of white cotton pants and knee-high black boots could be seen underneath. A black-vest peeked out between the buttons of the overcoat. A pointed, black hat accentuated his average height, causing him to appear much taller than he actually was.

In the center of the room, on the floor, was an ornate glyph created in white chalk. It was a set of concentric circles with polygonal shapes in between each ring. Odd ruins were scrawled on the ground surrounding it with opened bags of Terra Regia next to it. He sighed for a moment, spinning the gold ring on his right hand.

Standing up once more he approached the glyph, kneeling before it and placing both of his hands on the ground. With a sudden surge of magical energy, a portal erupted open in the circle. It revealed a black void with a crimson energies radiating outwards. A figure crawled out, clinking sets of chains appearing out of thin air to bind the supernatural being.

The cacophonic sounds appeared to herald a devastating supernatural force but expectations were not quite met by reality. As the sound and lightshow from the summoning faded, the true nature of the conjured demon was revealed.

It was a simple black cat with golden eyes.

The tiny chains shackled its paws and a fifth chain shackled its neck as a collar. A scowl appeared on Zoroastres’ face, disappointed with the outcome once again. He could have sworn that when he bound the demon in the first place, it was quite different. Did something go wrong in the binding process? Was fatigue affecting his recollection of the event?

“A pleasure to see you again Zoroastres,” the cat said in a surprisingly deep voice. “Round… fourteen?

Before the summoner could reply, a loud knock on the door cut him off. Still disgruntled, he got up and angrily stormed to the door. With sudden force he ripped the door open to see who dared to bother him while working.

On the other-side, stuffed awkwardly in the cramped hallway waited four individuals. In the front was the flamboyant Kincaid, who appeared to be suppressing the urge to introduce himself in his usual dramatic manner. Behind him was Aeria, who seemed to be having doubts on what she had gotten herself into, given the present company. Nearby was the demvir Speedy, who seemed a bit lost but carried an excitable gusto to resolve the whole demonic mess. Finally, in sharp contrast, was Cassius at the back of the group. With an infectious, lethargic demeanor, it was obvious that he wished he had taken off work when the day the demons attacked.

“If Timeus sent you, tell the tin can that I can take care of this myself!” he shouted, before loudly slamming the door shut again.

The sound of the door slamming shut came as a great shock to Speedy. With Duilius at the front Speedy had let its focus slip away. Navale’s quiet exterior did nothing to hamper the demvir’s interest in the town. While the wizard went about his tirade, Speedy was gazing at the slope of a rooftop in the distance. Gradually, Speedy began coming to grips with the fact that it hadn’t fully understood the task it had just accepted. With confusion, however, came experience and anything involving a demon was important if it had any hope of helping to close the portal.

“Why would he do that?” Speedy looked around to the others for answers.

Speedy partly wanted to wait and let one of the smooth-talking members of the band give the door another shot. Conversely, it felt that familiar heat building in the back of its head following the sudden and abrupt rejection. While Aja waited behind the group Speedy moved through the tight corridor and turned the knob, fully expecting it to be locked. Instead, the door swung wide open with relative ease. To make room, Speedy took a careful step inside, sliding just past Duilius.

“That’s no way to treat, uh...” Speedy rapidly lost focus and found itself pointing at the room's other occupant. “is that a cat?”

“We were told otherwise,” Kincaid’s chimed.

Stepping into the room, the thief rested a hand on the short machina’s shoulder, and pushed Speedy politely to one side before stepping past him.

Wearing a plain wool traveling cloak, dyed a shade of forest green, over traveling clothes which had been tailored to his specifications, the short (only a few inches taller than Speedy) laicar’s presence demanded attention if for no other reason than by virtue of him being there.

Dull grass-green eyes surveyed the room in an instant, taking in the details of the room and discarding them just as quickly until they settled on the wizened summoner. At which point Kincaid tilted his head, curious, and rested his left hand on his hip, drawing attention to the two swords that rested there. If their guards were anything to go by the first, and most gaudy of the two swords, was purely decorative. The wire guard was made completely of golden auritium, and sheathed in a scabbard much too fine for a weapon expected to be used. The second sword, on the other hand, was all together plain with a scabbard that was weathered and aged.

If owner could use such weapons effectively was another story altogether, as the laicar didn’t look like much of a fighter. He was too relaxed, and the smarmy grin on his face said he would rather have others fight for him.

“But please,” he continued, all warm insincerity, “forgive us our intrusion and let us stay all the same. At the very least, our own summoner might learn a thing or two from such a prestigious man as yourself!”

As Kincaid rambled, he made eye contact with Zoroastres and willed the summoner to accept their temporary annoyance.

It was a small thing, after all, to accommodate them. They could be an audience to his success, and then maybe Timeus would have a bit more faith in Zoroastres’ skill.

Aeria rolled her eyes at Kincaid. He was always so over the top and cheesy. She also reminded herself that she'd better not call him Kincaid. She doubted it would go over well if she exposed his true identity. In fact, she was feeling a little bit like more knowledge was a good thing at the moment so she stepped forward, swinging her halberd across herself unconsciously in case she needed it quickly.

Although she had some magical abilities, she never trusted full time mages. Oddly she often felt her weapon was more reassuring than her magical skills. She met Zoroastres' eyes and held them calmly. Her stint in prison had made her a lot less nervous and prone to back down and she proved this as she spoke.

"Yeah. What he said. Actually I have a question for you - what is it that you've summoned there? I don't think it's just a kitty cat like my metal friend here suggested."

Her eyes strayed to the cat and she concentrated. If there was any power coming from it, she couldn’t detect it but that didn’t mean much. Demons and other assorted nasties of any significant ability often cloaked their true forms quite well.

“Little guy is pretty cute, though.” Cassius said from behind Aeria. He had always had a fondness for cats. They were almost always allowed to live however they wanted to. It was something he could respect.

Zoroastres had half a mind to throw a fit when the group barged into the room. He turned to face Kincaid, about to reprimand the thief. However, before he could finish it was as if his anger dissipated on the spot. While he certainly was not happy with the interruption, he didn’t have the heart to deny an up and coming intellectual new knowledge!

“About time another summoner showed up. Someone I can finally talk to…” he mumbled, shutting the door behind them.

He looked towards both Speedy and Aeria, anger rearing up again. “Well of course it isn’t a cat! A typical pair of no knowledge nincompoops…” he grumbled under his voice. “Don’t you sense its magic potential? Do you not identify the Aiwass Binding Circles that I have set up? It’s an elementary form of demonic binding magic! You two clearly are not summoners! How dare he send me… mercenaries!?” A particularly acerbic tone punctuated those remarks.

Continuing his fit, Zoroastres walked over and stood behind Cassius who had already kneeled in front of the demon. “I’m surprised that a prestigious student such as yourself would carry company such as these philistines. Feel free to study the specimen, though I would be careful. This one tends to bite.”

The mage stepped towards the black cat, smiling at it as he did so. He honestly was not sure that this was the demon problem. Sure the feline looked a little prouder and more full of itself than your usual cat, but demons took larger, more physically imposing forms. Even Ego’s contained form was still one that left a visible, immediate impression on you.

Either way, he could afford to be a little dumb at the moment. There was zero desire to hurry, in his mind. The other groups probably had to fight their way through some sort of bullshit, and so they had requested that any group that completes their task quickly to offer support where needed. The student had already had his fill of danger for the foreseeable future. So the longer this took, the better.

Cassius crouched down a bit, going eye level with the creature. “Are you the scary beast that's been plaguing this poor man. I'm Cass, little guy.” He held out his hand towards it. If he was just a cat, he would probably just rub against it. If he was a demon… well that form wasn't able to do much in the way of harm. Maybe scratch the hell out his hand.

The feline tentatively looked at the outstretched hand. It leaned forward, cautiously sniffing at Cassius. The cat’s nose was cold and wet to touch, a sign of its good health. After a few seconds it drew his head back before nodding towards at the young summoner. It opened its mouth wide as if simply yawning.

However, much to the group’s surprise and especially Cassius’ disgust, its jaw continued to open wider and wider. Its mouth unhinged with a sickening pop! The inside of its mouth appeared as a disgusting fleshy void, most definitely unnatural.

With retching noise, a pair of enormous antenna erupted outwards from its mouth! They easily extended over twice the cats size. Both wrapped themselves tightly around Cassius’ arm. The bristles appeared to move independently and scoured all along the summoner’s arm. They clamped down with such force it was almost impossible for the mage the wrestle his arm free.

A few moments later the antenna retracted almost as suddenly as they appeared. The demon’s jaw popped once more as the bone realigned to the jaw. It clamped its mouth shut, a clearly annoyed look appearing on its face.

“Already taken!” it bemoaned in a deep baritone.

As Cassius stumbled back in shock, Zoroastres quickly responded. He pulled over a wooden chair for the youth to sit on.

Turning back towards the other three he began to bark orders. “Well?! Are you three still going to stand there and be wastes of space? There’s a kettle on the table, two glasses, and some bags of tea! Someone get me and my newfound associate a cup! I will take the Darjeeling! He will take the lemon with two spoons of honey to calm his shock!”

Pulling his own chair next to Cassius, the cloaked man began to explain in a dry tone of voice. ”Fascinating creature is it not? It managed to do quite a lot of damage to the town and took me quite a while to bind it!” he paused for a moment and eyed the beast with a peculiar look, “Though I daresay it had quite a bit more… gravitas when I bound it.”

"That's....disgusting. You wanna drink tea after seeing that? I couldn't even make tea after seeing it."

She turned her attention back to whatever it was that Zoroastres had brought into the world. She didn't really want to think about how it had managed to squeeze itself into the feline body that surrounded it but the fact remained that it had. Glaring at it up and down, she tried not to let the nausea overtake her before she shot a question at the crabby summoner.

"Did you mean to call this thing up? You seem a little wary of it. I thought that summoners were generally pretty confident when they bound creatures with all of this mumbo jumbo. We've established that it sure as shit isn't a cat but I want to know more about what it actually is? Please enlighten this particular ignorant fool, oh wise master."

Aeria rocked back on her heels and waited to hear what the grumpy old man would produce in the way of information.

[373]

“The nature of a demon is almost impossible to put into words understandable in the common tongue,” the summoner spat back. He eyed the demon closer who simply continued to flick its tail back and forth. With a look as if he had just drunk sour milk on his face, he turned back to Aeria.

“However, I will try to simplify the explanation for you folk. It’s a well-studied fact that there may be changes in a demon before and after the binding ritual. Often, summoners simply cannot contain the full forms demons have in Infernalis. In these cases, summoners invoke a scaled down version of the demon. They usually appear in a similar form but are smaller and weaker,” the robed man rambled.

Looking back at the feline he continued on, “However, I don’t believe that this is the case here. The form was changed far too much. Even invoking its true name does not reveal much.”

Zoroastres stood up before pointing at the bound demon. “Dmrn Ba’al!” he invoked the name of the demon, though through the esoteric magic of demons the other members of the party only heard an incomprehensible buzzing noise.

The chalk, circular outline began to light up around the demon. The form of three concentric circles was etched into the air, though only the middle circle glowed red.
Zoroastres strained the magic in order to compel the demon. With a blinding flash it disappeared in an instant.

The feline’s ears twitched twice. “For the fourteenth time, what is it Zoroastres? It’s rather rude to call someone and leave them waiting,” the cat replied in an obvious attempt to goad the summoner.

“Tch!” The
summoner frumpily sat back down on the chair, even more upset that before. “How Murgatroyd put up with this thing, I will never understand.”

“Is that jealousy I detect?”
Dmrn Ba’al chimed.

Zoroastres scowled.

Speedy found itself staring at where Duilius’ hand had pushed it aside. Again, heat flickered in its head while the others piled in. They were talking, of that Speedy was certain, but its attention had wandered over and been caught upon Duilius. As before, he spoke in a way that was uncomfortably familiar for the demvir. From the corner of its field of view it could see Cassius approach the cat that was not a cat, and its attention was torn away.

What ensued brought Speedy to pull the revolver from the holster, but it ended before the weapon could go very far, resulting in the weapon being put away. There were no further questions that it could raise regarding the creature’s nature. In that moment it had learned that Ego was not representative of all demons and the cat was certainly not a cat at all.

“Why don’t you believe it?” Speedy asked the exasperated wizard. It looked at the cat once again in an attempt to understand where the rest of it was being kept, but to no avail.

“If you did it before — I mean, if this is how you always, well, bind the demon, how could it be the wrong one?” Speedy strained to understand any part of the subject matter as it went on and said, “is it normally a bigger cat, or have more legs?”

“The exact nature of the changes would not have much to do with it, I think.” Cassius answered for the summoner, trying to make sure the conversation moved along. Their host had not noticed the demon’s words, but he sure had. “That little bit of static you is a beast’s true name. All demons have them, and whoever knows them can invoke it to control them. The idea that a fiend could resist it would get you laughed out of any magic group. They all have that same vulnerability.” As he said it, a flash of the demon Ego made it’s way to the forefront of his brain. Every demon, indeed.

“Except this one, it seems.” The student waved that thought away, and looked closely at the beast. He could take his time, still, and this had become a lot more interesting than his last encounters with demons had been. It also would keep their host from thinking about that damning statement this cat had made. “There was an obvious reaction to your words, though, sir. How did you procure his name in the first place?” He glanced over at Zoroastres.

In a stream of consciousness, Aeria had little time to worry about the niceties of conversation. She could have waited politely while the others chimed in with the points they wanted to make or the queries they had for Zoroastres, but she had felt that something about the last calling of the demon felt strange. The androgynous spurii raked a hand through her short fuzzy hair as she considered how much effort the summoner seemed to be expending to call the demon up. Perhaps some of the latent magical energy within her felt something in the summoning that wasn't right but whatever was happening, she felt like she ought to mention it. Her voice was full of more confidence than she felt as she cut into the discussion.

"Something feels funny here. I might be talking out of my ass, but I think Mr. Zoroastres here was trying pretty hard to make this whole summoning deal work. If you're such a great summoner, why'd it take that much out of you just to call this thing up?" She took a breath and added, "I wouldn't know but I get the sense that you're not as in control as you think you are, Zoroastres. Things like that worry me. What about you guys? Does it worry you that he might not have a lot of control over this thing?"

Her intense gaze was focused on the summoner, almost challenging him to answer her questions. There was something here that she didn't like at all.

[626]

“My feline form is quite elegant is it not?” mewed Dmrn Ba’al, grooming itself absent-mindedly. It twitched its nose before continuing to respond to Speedy’s question, “Though I’m quite a bit more evolved than those overgrown rats you call cats in this realm. I believe that this is honestly the true form.”

However, while the cat continued fawn over itself, Zoroastres sat with a sour look on his face. He looked down at the summoning matrix that he had scrawled, double and triple checking it for accuracy. Regardless if he wanted to admit it or not, it was proving far too difficult to summon what should have been a relatively easy demon to summon.

“Summoning is usually an instantaneous and simple event after the conjuring matrix has been created. The binding of the demon consists of two parts. Firstly, one subdues the demon and then the true name is extracted from the creature. However...” he trailed off, thinking back to the previous encounter.

The robed mage stood up, raising his right hand towards the summoning matrix once again. “If I recall correctly, subduing the demon was simple. The shape of the demon was different. However, demons can often freely change their forms. I don't recall it's original form being so... mammalian. It was more... anthropoid. Though now that I think about it further, there was something off when I procured the name.”

The chalk outline on the ground lit up, all three of the concentric circles glowing a bright red color. “Firstly, I etched the matrix onto the ground while I distracted the beast with a well-timed Atlas. Then, I lured it onto the matrix using another one of my demons. The binding spell still in effect, I quickly barraged it with several uses of Lightning Cannon until it yielded.”

He flicked his wrist up, the glowing outline rising into the air and hovering as three concentric circles of light. “Though when the time to procure the name arrived, the situation became rather difficult. I believed that the demon gave me a name, though when I try to remember that one all I remember is ■■■■■■■■■.”

A loud buzzing noise filled the minds of the entire group. The feline twitched its ears once more.

“The odd thing is, I can’t seem to understand it either... Then when I tried to coerce the name once more, the matrix wavered before erupting outwards in a bright plume of light that blinded me for a moment. Though, it was as if my mind immediately remembered a new name! Dm’rn Ba’al!. I quickly attempted to reign in the magic once more, but I was only able to manifest one of the circular arrays to bind the demon. Though, perhaps it was just my prodigal skill but I managed to bind the demon extremely quickly even though I only used one circle! A phenom like myself recovers from unforeseen circumstances quickly and ends up solving the problem in a manner that is even easier than before!”

With the buzzing noise once again echoing through the room, the feline turned its head toward Zoroastres as if to respond. Though instead of speaking up, it simply licked its front paw twice.

[2315]

As everyone took their turns asking questions, Kincaid had busied himself by making tea. Though it irked him to not have the spotlight, the thief wasn’t going to be much help. Still…, as the group posed their questions, small actions now and again would catch the eccentric laicar’s attention.

He remained this uncharacteristically quiet until a moment presented itself, and sudden realization dawning on him. The easy smile on his face darkened, and a mischievous glint settled behind his dull grass-green eyes. In his usual smug voice, he commented loudly, “Perhaps you’re in need of our help more than you are willing to admit.”

Crossing the room with the tea cups in one hand, jar of honey in the other, Kincaid spared a passing glance at Dmrn Ba’al and chuckled. Behind him, near the hearth, the kettle began to whistle.

“I have a better question,” he continued, setting the cups down before either summoner. He turned sharply, speaking while he busied himself, “Better than ‘how you did this,’ and ‘what did that look like,’ or ‘why was that so exhausting.’” He paused dramatically, long enough so that he could take the kettle off the fire and let a pregnant silence fill the room.

Crossing the room one last time, Kincaid stopped to pour the water and let the tea steep. “You never witnessed Murgatroyd summon the demon you fought before, did you?”

“Hmph,” Zoroastres responded in a fed-up tone of voice. He picked up the teacup before taking a sip. His expression turned to an even deeper scowl as he set the tea back down on the table. “Very unsatisfactory,” muttered the arcane scholar.

He shook his head at Kincaid’s question. “Of course I never saw how Murgatroyd summoned the demon. The poor man died about seventy years ago!” exclaimed the researcher. He looked towards the demon before continuing. “You probably saw the manor when you were arriving into town. It’s the decrepit mansion at the top of the hill. Murgatroyd used to be a summoner of quite some renown and he used to live there.”

Pausing for a moment. “Coincidentally, that was also where I fought and bound this damn beast.”

Aeria had been sitting quietly again and thinking. Something had been bothering her but until Kincaid spoke up and asked his question, she hadn't really focused on what her thoughts meant. Finally the pieces began falling into place for her too. After Zoroastres had finished answering Kincaid, she raised her voice again to speak. She was slightly distracted as she tried to put into words what was in her head. The spurii hoped that it didn't come out in a way that was too confusing. It often did when she thought aloud, so she crossed her fingers that it wouldn't be too awkward.

"Hang on, hang on! The reason that the demon's name won't stick is that it isn't the only one. I mean...the demon...there's not just one demon in all of this. You only have the true name of one demon but there's...what...three? The anthropoid thing that you fought isn't the same as our feline friend here and there's yet another form which might well be the original one that Murgatroyd summoned. At least that's what makes sense to me. So...Zoroastres....what do you say to that?"

The spurii turned her gaze to the summoner, hoping she hadn't just shoved her foot into her mouth by speaking this way but feeling like she had actually made some sort of breakthrough.

[846]

Kincaid’s smile widened, and he raised a single finger into the air, indicating that the prideful summoner should listen to his companion.

“You’re lucky,” the thief said to the older man, “I’d have demanded money from you for that information. The longer we stay, however, the more pressing some things become over others. So consider payment for our help at a discounted rate today.”

Dropping his hand, Kincaid looked back over his shoulder at Dmrn Ba’al, and said, “I would like to dispense with any doubt and bickering, now, by asking you simply to retrieve the names of the other demons. It would expedite matters if you prove us… I believe you called us nincompoops? Yes, well, if you would prove us wrong.”

He didn’t want to get the old man a chance to refute, or wiggle his way out in order to save his pride. Instead, Kincaid returned his attention to Zoroastres and leaned forward on the table, his knuckles pressing down against the hardwood surface. “That is, unless you’re afraid we’re right.”

[730]

Much of the conversation flew far above Speedy’s comprehension. When each participant spoke, its head flitted in their direction, until Speedy was constantly looking from side to side in time with their replies.

After what felt like an eternity of waiting and listening it found a natural pause and cut in. If nothing else Speedy was certain that everybody that had spoken seemed certain they were correct. That Zoroastres appeared unwilling to accept the legitimacy of other opinions was clear.

“I don’t understand very much about summoning. I want you to explain something to me.” Speedy recalled the spectacle from just moments earlier. “ about when demonstrated the ritual for us before. There was something inconsistent about all of this.”

Despite the swell of pride Speedy had begun to project, it was acting entirely on a hunch. For as little as it understood, the observation may have gone without saying, but it had to take the risk.

“You have three circles there, and when you tried to summon it when we got here, only one of them lit up!”

[179/634]

"I believe Mage Zoroastres is taking proper precaution," remarked a new voice from the doorway. A demvir stood there in soft blue robes, a pair of empty wireframe glasses over his eyes. The top of his head was smooth and bald, but the metal around his chin protruded downward in the semblance of a beard. The straight line of his mouth blinked with blue light in time with his words. Two other robed figures walked in with him, the first a laicar woman in violet robes with a white line down one side, and the second a velen man in red-orange.

"My apologies for intruding. I am Laebuta, a humble representative of the Arcanum, come to Navale in the company of an envoy from Terminus." The demvir bowed his head respectfully, with his hands in opposite sleeves. "Your expertise is requested at the town hall." Turning to the others, Laebuta spoke again. "As I said, I believe Mage Zoroastres has been taking proper precaution. Demonkind are known to be liars and deceivers, and while there may be multiple demons, or aspects of a demon, relating to this bound one, it could be foolhardy to seek them out.

"You are in luck, however, as I believe we have ascertained the information you stood to gain." Bowing his head once more, the demvir turned toward the door. "While we are here, we will help to secure your borders, but know that we will be leaving soon, to try to put an end to all this."

[250/250] Final

Notes
I know there was a lot of great stuff planned for this thread, and I hate that we never got to see most of it. Unfortunately, I think it best to get things moving again. You are welcome to add closing turns until the end of the week.

Essentially, Terminus has sent about 600 members of the Arcanum, Conexus, and Fraternitas on their way to Krevati. Upon reaching Navale, Laebuta asked the mayor if anyone in the town knew more about the daemons and was pointed to Zoroastres. They do not know who you are.

Laebuta assumes that you're trying to find the location of Krevati. He does not actually have the information you had the chance to gain from the daemon(s).
