Many roads led in and out of Terminus, but none larger than the shuttle doors which barred its west and south entrances. Large, auritium-reinforced steel parted on the occasional day when massive caravans might shuttle supplies in bulk into the metropolis. Now, though, those gates were shut.

The smaller passages might've been guarded by smaller forces, but no less than a full platoon now occupied the western gate. As for the south... large stripes of yellow tape were criss-crossed along it, a clear sign of law enforcement.

All throughout Terminus, the grandis speculii flickered to life. Like a pool of murky water, a smoky gray filled the orb-like screens before slowly clearing into a coherent picture. On it was a recognizable - and well-respected - figure: the Auspex of the Conexus.

Zephyrus was a woman who loathed the limelight, but there was no trace of her renowned patience in her eyes. The enlil-velen spurii was striking to behold. Her mixed parentage had endowed her with a wholly unique aesthetic, neither Velen nor Enlil. Pure white plumage feathered her neck and cheeks, thinning out to reveal a small pair of spines that ran across the top of her head and down her back.

Puffed out not unlike a scarf, the plumage decorated her shoulders before revealing the tightly-packed musculature of the Velen. Terminating abruptly, the sinewy amber skin gave way to hardened keratin almost seamlessly, black limbs smooth in appearance and texture. Five digits occupied either hand, an opposable talon with four other digits.

Her left leg was shown prominently, dressed in simple denim pants beneath an open-side skirt. A deadly distraction, one that had long since earned Zephyrus the reputation of a femme fatale. Above it, she wore a simple button-up shirt with a thick jacket draped over her shoulders. Slung around her waist loosely, a pair of pistols sat snugly, waiting to be used.

Glowing amber eyes matched the almost luminescent skin of the Auspex, but not a trace of humor lined them. Instead, her voice spoke lowly, devoid of its typical musical tenor. "Attention all citizens of Terminus: the city is hereby on lockdown. All those associated with Astra Non Obligant is hereby wanted - for crimes of murder, conspiracy, and assault with deadly intent - dead or alive."

Behind her, the gates loomed large in the encroaching winter night. The images faded from the speculii, and the fresh announcement left no question in every citizen's mind: there was no leaving until the Auspex meted out justice.

A chuckle was heard after the announcement.

“Astra Non Obligant. Man is that a ridiculous name,” Furi said to herself. The huntress was camping by the south gate, which was now locked down.

“Why even call yourself that? Obligated to care about astral shit?” she stated. The only reason she was here was on the off-chance some member showed up and tried to escape the city. They had to carry some reward.

Keydis may have gotten away, but it was very obvious she was not involved with the assassination incident. Maybe they’d meet up again someday, when she didn’t have a price tag on her. Since then she added dual pistols to her repertoire, as well as a higher-grade sniper rifle. God did the waiting suck though...

[127]

A frustrated curse slipped from the towering laicar at the head of the column. Standing a head above most of the non-Velen behind him, the man struck an imposing figure. His copper-colored hair was shorn close in a soldier's cut. Behind his metallic red mask, Aureax grit his teeth, trying to figure out the best course of action.

Zephyrus was at this gate. He had judged poorly, and now the bulk of the Astra non Obligant, many of whom were not ready or able to fight, was nearly within earshot of the head of the very organization they were looking to escape.

At this point, there was no hope of crossing the city again to make it to the western gate, and they would almost certainly be seen and hounded the entire way.

"Anyone willing to fight, come behind me," Aureax called out. "I'll speak with her. If she won't back down, we'll hold her and anyone else off, and the rest of you start working on getting that gate opened back up."

Without waiting for any word of assent, Aureax walked out into the open. A long burgundy cloak fell from his shoulders, open in the front to show leather body armor, sculpted into the shape of his own chest. He held both arms up, showing himself to be unarmed as he strode down the center of the road, heading right for the Auspex, scanning about to see if she was truly alone.

In that wide street, the self-proclaimed "Desperado" of Terminus fixed the approaching man with a baleful stare. With her enlilian amber eyes, the piercing gaze was equal parts intimidating and fascinating. Her words were ice, frigid in the winter air as she spoke to Aureax. "I had thought so much better of you, you know. Even if we didn't see eye to eye during your time serving, I had hoped you would aspire to greater things than... this."

Almost immediately, the Auspex's hands dropped to hang languidly from her belt. A dangerously small amount of space was all that separated her from her weapons of choice, and her stern glare relented into something resembling disappointment.

"I suppose this is where I give you your chance to surrender, and make this peaceful," She remarked tiredly.

The tensing of her hands spoke volumes of how much she expected it to happen.

[ 151 / 570 ]

If he weren't so terrified, Aureax might have laughed. Despite dwarfing the woman in front of him, he made very certain not to make any sudden movements. There was no doubt in his mind that she would shoot him without hesitation.

However, with so many people depending on him, he couldn't just back down. "You took the words from my mouth. If you want things peaceful, you're going to have to give the order to open those gates." He hesitated, then added, "You and I both know this will only end badly. How many people have to die?"

A sleeping man of small importance took an interest to the going ons of this announcement. He'd come to Terminus just for the Nocte Nils festival in hopes of catching up with an old friend of his, instead of finding them he caught wind of the Eximum being killed, -racist bastard- a group of suspects being detained, a weird laicar talking on the screens, and now a dude with a cloak trying to talk down some dude with a scythe.

He scratched at his messy head of jet black hair and retrieved a thin band of elastic from his pocket to wrap around the longest locks. All of it tinged with orange at the ends and silky to the touch, was now held back from in front of his face with the band of elastic he carried, forming a long ponytail that protruded from the back of his head, with bangs that breaking free of their restraints formed a little hood that covered his forehead and eyebrows.
He yawned obnoxiously, still drowsy from his nap, and pushed his bangs back out his face to reveal calm, and beamused looking orange eyes that watched the proceedings from his seat on the ground. He wore long tan trousers that had been visibly patched from years of use, a thick black belt of animal hide, and an open vest that revealed his chest, all from beneath a black hood that hung around his shoulders from a rope.

He yawned again and gripped the long black staffed naginata beside him while scratching at his neck absentmindedly, his eyes still fixed on the two soon to be combatants. Boy did I pick a day to fall asleep in public, huh? From looks of things it would seem as though he wouldn't be going anywhere until one of these two fellows lost. He crossed his arms in his lap and yawned again. Well Hikaru, you might as well just sit watch. Maybe they can figure it out before your delivery is late.

[335]

"How many?!" Zephyrus hissed, suddenly. Her amber eyes flashed dangerously. "There are five men dead to your terrorists. Five spouses made widows and widowers, five children made orphans. Do not presume to bring peace to my doorstep after setting my home on fire, Wagoner!"

The Auspex was fast, blindingly so. In a single, fluid motion, she'd drawn both pistols and fired them, angled just perfectly to pierce both of the laicar's kneecaps.A second later, she'd fallen back a good five feet into a comfortable distance for combat.

Flourishing one pistol as the other hung by its trigger-guard on her finger, the spurii's plumage furrowed meaningfully in a show of aggression. The scarf of feathers puffed out as her talons scraped across the packed dirt underfoot. A single harsh snarl ripped from the woman's features, her patience lost and her enlilian ancestry bared. "Come, Astra non Obligant, and break yourselves before me."

[ 156 / 726 ]

“Well at least I don’t have to ask whose side she’s on,” Furi said quietly, having witnessed the kneecapping and subsequent ‘come at me bro’ gesture.

She prepared her ground quickly, setting up a decent perch for her rifle, setting aside clips in a row for quicker reload times. The huntress peered down the scope at the street below, waiting to see who would be next to challenge the lady next. Whoever stepped out was likely to get a nice surprise...in the head.

[84/211]

"Ah!" The scruffy fellow who'd been sleeping earlier now exclaimed in surprise at the rate at which the danger had escalated. More so at the ricochet of the bullets Zepherus decided to fire.

Leaping to his feet in a bout of surprise his own instincts took over and he leapt up from the ground, gripping his naginata tightly scrambling over barrels rather ungracefully in a rush to avoid becoming a case to show off the tiny, cap shaped, projectiles of death. He ran across the paved road and before stopping at the corner of a building that gave him a clear view, while serving as sufficient cover. Peeking out from behind it he could the spurii's anger mounting with the puffing of the feathers around her neck.

The orange eyed dozer frowned and shook his blade at the angry woman, "Hey! Watch what you're doing with those things, you could shoot someone's eye out!" He called angry himself for nearly being caught with a stray bullet more than the woman's actual shooting. After all, he was going to be a legend someday, he couldn't die by a stray bullet. It's got to be something phenomenal, like falling into a volcano on a basilisk, that spits fire!

Distracted as he was, he didn't notice the actual damage done to Zephyrus's real target; he was too busy being worried about almost getting shot.So much so that he wasn't being too keen on where the bullets actually went, not that he was too observant after just waking up anyway.

Aureax cursed as he twisted to the side, holding just enough presence of mind to not fall right on the fresh wounds. "You bitch!" he growled out from the ground, gritting his teeth hard as blood pumped from both of his knees. No matter how pissed he was, the former guard kept his empty hands high, not wanting to give the woman an excuse to shoot him again.

Obviously, she didn't need one.

He couldn't stop himself from spitting out a string of curses, though.

Behind him, the other Astra members watched incredulously. Then, they came, a small tidal wave. Ignoring Aureax's cries to stop or fall back, three men were there in seconds. One was swinging two broadswords. The tallest of the bunch, an orange-scaled velen, waded in with brass knuckles. A wiry enlil in a red cloak expertly whirled a staff, working it in between the attacks of the other two.

"Idiots!" Aureax yelled. "There's no way she'd be--!"

[160/500]

Right on cue, three targets came forward. Furi considered shooting them in the head and be done with it...but given Zephyrus's actions down below, perhaps taking them alive would be more preferred and pay out more.

So she aimed for one of the enlil's right leg, firing for the kneecap.

“It begins!” exclaimed Kolr VÁðarrson.

Standing six-foot two and packed with muscle, Kolr was dressed in chainmail and plain wool pants. Taking the wooden shield from his back and the study battle axe from the runic belt loop, the Arctoan man gave a primeval howl before rushing into the oncoming wave of ANO fighters.

With his axe held high he came straight for the three and stopped to bring down his weapon in a mighty strike the wrecked the pavement. The strength of the man was such that his blow sent a jolting wave of force out before him in a cone.

“I am Kolr VÁðarrson!” he shouted in challenge, “If you deathdealers wish more innocent harmed I will meet your first!”

The enlil turned to face the new threat, brandishing his quarterstaff, just before pain exploded in his knee. He yelled out as he fell, the quarterstaff clattering to the ground. He shrieked in agony as he rolled over on his back, hands reaching for his shattered knee, but the pain too intense to actually touch it.

"Faras!" the laicar of the trio yelled out. The brawny man fell back, holding his swords defensively, trying to watch Zephyrus, the newcomer, and the enlil, Faras, all at once. "Pell, we need to--!"

"She's all yours, Bann," the third declared, turning to face the barbarian. The orange-scaled velen had hard flat ridges on his forehead, coming to a point between his eyebrows and giving him a fierce appearance. A few inches taller than the newcomer, he lifted his brass knuckles confidently. "I don't know how you north-landers feel about things, but when a man steals the money from my pocket and the food from my belly," Pell growled out, "or gladly stands aside to allow another the pleasure, I don't call that man innocent!"

Pell lashed out with a rapid left-right combo.

Regaining his composure, Bann nodded to his partner, hoping that Faras would come out of this somehow, and trusting in his other comrades to handle the sniper. Fixing his sights on Zephyrus again, he raised one sword vertically, holding the other perpendicular to it. "Not much sense talking, is there?" he remarked before rushing ahead, cleaving across with the first sword and then thrusting with the second.

High atop the action, an enlil man in dark clothing laid flat on the rooftop. A long, rifle was in his hand, with a heavy scope atop it. The entire weapon had been covered in dark blue paint, intended for camouflage in the night. With the morning sun rising overhead, Boult felt distinctly exposed, despite no one noticing him, yet. He very nearly had a perfect shot at Zephyrus, distracted by the other three. The cross-hairs were lined up, his finger trembling uncertainly on the trigger.

Then there was a gunshot.

When Faras went down, Boult instinctively dropped flat, scanning about the surrounding rooftops and street for whoever it was that had fired the shot. Quickly spotting a woman, Boult rose tentatively to his feet. At that angle, he couldn't steady the rifle against the roof to take the shot. The middle-aged enlil couched the butt of the rifle to his shoulder, fighting against the wind and the weight of the rifle to steady his aim. He exhaled, holding his breath for several seconds.

His finger tightened on the trigger and the gun went off with a resounding boom. A cloud of white dust blasted up, though, as the bullet sank into the wall behind the woman's head. Muttering a curse to himself, Boult, immediately broke out into a run, trying to flee before he was spotted.

Zephyrus' cold visage persisted as Bann shot forward. The assistance was unexpected, and perhaps a little unwanted, but a smirk broke from her face. Spinning on her heel, the woman brought up one pistol as the first blow fell, leaning out of its way to give a clear sight of the weapon to the self-proclaimed revolutionary.

The handgun looked more unto a cannon up close, the long silverish barrel of the handgun fused to the bulky steel furniture. Along each side, an engraved pattern drew intricate lines across the whole of the gun. Tinted a distinct green, the fierce laicar felt a dawning recognition: the sly Auspex had plated her weapons to disguise them as bigatium, when in fact he was staring across the bridge of a vitatium handgun!

With a keening screech, the handgun met the thrusting jab, shunting it away as she spun with the momentum of the blow. Bann stumbled forward barely a half-step to her right, before Zephyrus pivoted on her left foot in a full circle. Bringing her knee up, the Auspex revealed another terrible deception: the duelist concealed a pugilist of no small skill.

In the crowd, hisses and jeers began to rise as the urge to surge forward became untolerable. The sight of comrades being picked apart by so few generated increasingly derogatory remarks.

Behind the swelling crowd, two young men bearing the tabard of the Conexus stole into a nearby alley. One, a young enlil bearing an orange flare of plumage that jetted straight upwards from his forehead, the rest of him a vibrant red. The other, a laicar with chocolate eyes and matching skin. Both bore long-barreled carbines, waiting for a signal.

[ 281 / 1007 ]

The first shot rang true, but just as she was about to aim for the next, a loud snap went by Furi’s head. Someone was firing at her. Taking her eyes off of the street, she looked around the rooftops and spotted a figure moving away, a rifle in their hand.

Another leg shot sounded tempting, but she’d rather ensure that whoever it was they couldn’t fire back. She aimed carefully at the hand that held the gun, then fired soon after.

[82/344]

The twin punches landed against the wooden shield that Kolr had brought up in readied defense. Even so, the velen’s raw strength was such that it drove the big man back two steps. Looking down at the shield, the barbarian witnessed two perfect dents in the wood from where the blows had landed.

He glanced back at the velen, Pell, and shook his head with laughter.

“So strange,” was all he said before he strode forward to meet the other man. Though he carried an axe and shield, when Kolr lashed out with a practiced kick at Pell - low and near the other man’s knees as opposed to the flashier kicks so many favored - it was apparent that the laicar was also a student of pugilis.

Hikaru watched the proceedings with increased interest, forgetting completely the gunshots from before that sent him running behind a wall and grinned. Battle? He asked himself with obvious excitement in his eyes, and obviously a struggle of ideals at that, this could be my chance to make history! "Package be damned!" he cried as he leapt into the fray eagerly.

He gripped his wickedly curved naginata tightly in his hand as fervor mounted in the usually calm -tired or sleeping- man. The laicar was seriously staring down a chance to write his name on history's wall in obnoxious black paint, and wasn't about to let it get away. He dove in blade first with a lightning fast thrust, holding his weapon at the handle closest to the hilt of the blade and aimed for the large man's belly, intending to throw him off balance before delivering a strike up and to the side, the steel blade flashing in the streetlight's glow as he ducked around Pell to his unprotected side to prevent himself from disrupting the flow of the man's movements.

He didn't know yet the name of the people who he'd sided with, but he didn't care just yet. He was a pirate, he didn't have to be consistent with anything but the pirate's code of honour, and he was a captain starved of conflict. "Yeargh!" came his wild half growl, half battle cry, his earrings and high-pitched jangling bangles on his arms and hanging from his naginata adding to the cacophony of noise surrounding the gate's entrance.

Today was a good day to be a pirate.

The orange velen's lips split in a toothy grin. It came as no surprise for the burly northlander to lash out with a kick, but it was a pleasant surprise to see how primal and unrefined it was. Rather than dodge, Pell dropped down, catching the kick in his arms. He laughed and harshly shoved Kolr away, just in time for the unknown youth to rush up with his naginata.

Not about to question his fortune, Pell followed behind the wild young man. After the naginata flashed by, the orange-scaled velen dashed at the off-balance northlander and hammered both fists against his wooden shield again -- intentionally, this time, aiming to throw the man off-balance.

Roof-side, Boult dove for the shingles when Furi's shot rang out. Letting out a relieved breath at the near-hit, he hurriedly pulled back the bolt on his rifle and seated a new bullet. Boult then etched a design into the air in front of him. The lines glowed in the air as he called up and released the power. "By Occultis' will," he breathed out, mimicking the words of his teacher. Suddenly, a twin lay on the roof beside him.

In unison, both enlil rose to their feet, facing the enemy sniper. They cut and run, one to the left and the other to the right and then both turned, aiming their rifles at Furi. Fingers tightened on the triggers, and a single gunshot rang out.

For an instant, Bann thought that gunshot signaled the end of his life, but instead of a bullet, it was a knee that slammed into his gut. Unable to suppress his shock at how strong the petite Auspex was, Bann dropped one of his swords before he went tumbling away... and further away. Coming up in a half crouch, Bann clutched his ribs and yelled out, "Post-mortem!"

Immediately, Pell turned and dove for the street, locking both hands above his head.

Note
How you wrote Furi's turn sounds like she's trying to use the Tier 3 Sniper ability, Thread the Needle.

Thread the Needle
A skilled Sniper can afford to aim at targets more specific than center mass, if the situation allows. However, if that one shot isn't guaranteed to take out the target, the next best thing is to disable the target in some way. Taking aim at a limb or other extremity, the Sniper seeks to send a shot to cripple the target, allowing for follow-up shots to finish the job.

This ability costs 1500 Vigor. The struck limb will be disabled for the following three rounds; only one limb may be disabled per target. Requires a ranged weapon.

You said that she's only Tier 2 in skill, though, so I figured hitting Boult's hand, while he's running, was a long-shot (pun intended).

Snapping her sights onto the retreating man, she caught his words only a second before it was too late. Eyes wide, she dove backwards without looking. Not an instant later, she felt herself lifted and thrown, her ears fading into a high-pitched whine as the bomb went off.

Landing hard onto her side, the Auspex couldn't help the low groan of pain as she felt a sickening crunch in her left arm. She'd landed on it, and the jolt of pain that followed her attempts to stand afterwards only confirmed it: her arm was broken.

Sucking in hissing breaths as she forced herself to her feet, the fractured arm hung loosely at her side. Holstering her remaining handgun to better steady herself, she finally drew herself up. Bright red blood leaked from the corners of her mouth. Jagged white teeth could be glimpsed as she panted for breath, the membranous skin of her velen ancestry displaying a fresh gash along her forehead.

Her eyes narrowed until they were tiny slits of amber, her body's reflexes dulled none as Bann stood to deliver a convincing final blow. She let herself breathe, slowly and carefully. Agony throbbed in her shoulder, but it was pushed through, numbed by degrees of training far beyond these rats.

There was no warning shot, only the swift trio of shots that sang into the morning air. One for Bann, aimed squarely through his left hip. One for Pell, to pierce through the thick of his left leg. A final one for Hikaru - the youth's attacking of a friendly target more than implicating him - aimed squarely for the young man's s dominant arm.

[ 277 / 1284 ]

Notes
Blood from a Stone to battle through the pain.

Quick Draw to fire at all three simultaneously. Second shot on Pell is Double Tap. Third shot on Hikaru is Thread the Needle.

She couldn’t see how, but there were two targets now, and Furi took cover behind a chimney, the shot ringing past her left ear, clipping part of the concrete.

Odd, there’s two of them, why only one shot? the huntress thought to herself. She theorized that the second man was a decoy of some kind.

“Goddamn magic,” she muttered. She’d have to react quickly, he wasn’t just going to allow her to hide all night. Slowly lowering herself to the ground, she slid out of cover, taking a chance that he’d still be aiming for a person that was standing up. This time she aimed at his lower body before pulling the trigger.
