[PM][ALL UKI] Week 170: Onward to Salvation

Chikao had been sitting off to the side, a calculating gaze passing over each and every individual as they spoke. He had been following the pace of the conversation quite carefully; there was neither word nor emotion overlooked as he drunk in the entirety of the conversation at hand. Many of the gathered seemed to house that burning fervor Orion liked so much to brand to their soul; some of them, like that poor woman who seemed just about ready to break down, were housing doubts. Of course those doubts were very reasonable; one cannot expect to charge into war against a force like the Gotei Thirteen without being afraid, or at the very least, unsure. A good deal of the gathered seemed to have adopted much more brash 'let's do this' attitudes. It was all very well that they were anxious to get things started (and it made sense after waiting for so long) but they seemed to forget the gravity of their situation. But he wouldn't say anything about it. Instead he was content to sit back and further contemplate the conversation.

The tension is high, he observed with a repressed chuckle.

"See, now we're talking!" Haruki finally pushed his way to our of the mob of people, onto the light of the campfire.

He wore his the same old ragged pants, boots and jacket he always wore, with his loyal knife wrapped into his cloth belt. He combed his hair right with his hand, took a careful look to the ones around him and sighted with a bit of disappointment. He expected a much more straightforward group of people. Still, it was all he had, so they'd have to do. He would have liked to speak a bit about his heritage, his father, the things he did both before and after his death. Yet, they had no time for such things, and so he decided to make it simple.

"All right, my name is Furude Haruki, son of Furude Matachi, who was a member of the Sin Qua Non before those fucking reapers caught him," he thought it would be appropriate to at least introduce himself. "I've lived in the fifty-eight district for more than four hundred years, and I know very well just how little we mean to those shitbags. I guess it's time to show them what we're capable of," he came closer to the campfire, both to get some attention and to keep himself warm. "So, what's the plan? What is it that you need me to do?"

[230/230]

Orion’s eyes remained directed downwards. The amber flakes in his eyes swayed and lashed with the emblazoned flames. He was still studying the sheet of paper the mysterious man had given him. It was a curious situation. This man wasn’t one of the scouts he had sent to reconnoiter Seireitei, yet his map matched – and was even more accurate – than the one drawn out by his men.

"Your name?” Orion asked the stranger. His expression was sharp and solemn, his senses piqued. "I don’t recognize you. When did you join the Insurrection and what district did you come from?”

However Haruki, impatient as ever, stood waiting for a response. Orion turned to him and answered, "I want you and Rayon to observe the actions of the men and women in Seireitei. The shinigami should be leaving for Earth shortly. When all the divisions are gone, signal us.” He turned back to the carriage and removed an auburn cloth tied to a staff. "Wave this flag five times as your signal. Then, we shall begin our march.

"There’s no point in initiating combat...” His eyes, grave and heavy, fell over the whimpering figure of Josephine. "...Unless we are certain the shinigami are gone. Attacking any moment sooner would only be suicide. I will not let you die mindlessly.”

This massive turn is probably my last one in here, but I'll might put in another short one later, before the end of the week.

Rayon ignored completely the girl who was throwing a blue fit in the middle of the already heated situation. If it were for him, he would have just got there and slapped her on the face. It would not probably do much, but she would quite down for a while nonetheless. His attention had been focused to the defeatist who was annoying them all with his weak spine and soul, babbling around about swords and spells, and god only knew whatever he was afraid of. ‘Be a man,’ the gaunt citizen wanted to shout, ‘stand up for the cause!’ Luckily for the dirty brat, Rayon had subdued his necessity to get up and slap him too, when Orion had responded. Their leader had gone as far as to show something extremely important to their cause, something that would turn the table in their favour when used. And they would use it soon.

A quick glance around the campfire highlighted all those that had remained quiet, maintaining their thoughts for themselves, waiting without acting. The revolutionist had a very clear idea of what he would like to do to them, but their revolt was open to all kind of people, either hot-headed or patient. Nevertheless, the growing winding doubts about their chances in their project were a slight on their beliefs. On his beliefs. If there is even one an other that start his rigmarole on the risks and whatnot, Rayon commented mentally, I swear to a kinder god that I will strike him down tooth and nail… I’ll show him that you don’t need any flashy weapon or power to do some real damages. The opportunity didn’t show up for him to smite the infidels, but a different, much more interesting shot came his way.

A calm figure had valuable intelligence on how to infiltrate a small group of them inside Seireitei. Knowing the weak points of the militia patrols or which gates were less guarded were information worth more than fresh water to a thirsty man. On the other hand, Rayon was a cautious man, and something in this newcomer’s attitude looked fishy: it was not just the fact that he had appeared apparently from nowhere, but it was also because he had exactly what they needed most. The gaunt revolutionary was also pretty sure that the man had not stated his name, or anything else. That was true for the most of them; Orion had probably planned that stop in order to gather everybody in a single place to prepare everything in an orderly fashion. Yet, Rayon could not rest completely at ease.

“Who are you that are so willingly to give these information out?” the scarred individual enquired with anger, “and where did you get them?”

His voice made echo to the peremptory tone of his leader. It was evident that Orion himself was dubious about the man’s motives. Their protests, on the other hand, were partially covered by a voice that gave even too many details about him and his relatives. When his name was coupled with that of the peeving blatherer, Rayon nodded in the direction of Haruki even if he was quite pestered. After all, he would never contradict a direct order from Orion.

“As soon as you are ready,” Rayon said, taking the flag from the outstretched hand of his leader, “son of SQN.”

[1212]

Josephine froze in place as the man’s hand settled on her shoulder. The passing glimpse of a faint smile was enough to center the girl again.

They’re not all bad.

The pierced girl huffed a sigh out and wiped the tears from eyes, streaking the dark liner with it. Cocking her wrist down, she lowered her hand and quickly her nose across the cuff of her sleeve. Pulling the sleeve back over her hands, Josephine walked back into the crowd, not far from where the man had settled with a bowl of stew.

The stranger holding the two maps in the center of the mob questioned the shaded man’s sources – and rightfully so. It seemed odd that someone would suddenly appear with precise, critical information directing this group to exact locations. As the thoughts spun through the girl’s head, another man stepped forward and began to chomp at this informant’s heels.

"Stop for a second,” the guarded girl said stepping forward, "If someone wanted us dead or wanted this stopped, they would have done it already.”

The frail girl held her crossed arms and rubbed them slow and nervously.

"If he has information I think we should take it for what it is. If he knows something we don’t or has information on the inside, we should go with it. I don’t see why anyone here would try and sabotage our plans...everyone here wants an escape. We all have our reasons to be here. If you don’t trust him we could just keep him near...and if we’re wrong and he is a traitor,” she said, passing a glance to the seated stranger, "we’ll make sure it’s the last thinghe does.”

[282/724]

Ritsuko decided not to finish the flask of alcohol and listen the rest of the group who came up with ideas to be certain that the majority of the Gotei forces were on Earth. The dark-haired woman was certain that the strongest fighters were sent to stop some nonsense that she cared less about. At least a couple of guys would search the fabled area before the insurgence make their move to topple the army.

"Let's hope that all Captains and Vice-Captains left for Earth. What will we do if some of those people decide to return to Soul Society? God forbid if those blasted fools from Central Forty-Six decided that the Shinigami can use their releases fully. But like I said earlier, they cannot use lethal force of any kind to stop the rebellion." Ritsuko out gave extra information for the group to think about and make secondary plans should things hit a snag.

[155/575]

"All right, I think I can do that," Haruki said, "assuming we already have a good way to track what happens in there."

The young man then turned around to nod at the man who had greeted him as Son of the Sin Qua Non. A brief wave of pride went through him, as the memory of his father came to his mind. But he had to save that for later. Right now there was a task to be done. It wasn’t exactly the kind of mission he expected, but he had to start somewhere. He had no idea of how were they going to do this surveillance, so he hoped someone else did, or it was going to be a very short mission. Especially if they got caught, or if the reapers found a reason to have them killed.

"Let's get on moving then," he said. "The sooner we get this done, the sooner we can hit those bastards where it hurts them the most. We’ll hit them right in their death god pride. So the thing now is, where and how do we start?"

[405/405]

The calm man simply raised his eyes from the bowl of stew he was eating, locked the other man in his gaze, and smiled. The peaceful sensation radiated out from him, as though he was a beacon of warmth in the cold.

"You may call me professor. That should suffice for now. I am not from this district, or really any, for that matter. I am a traveling merchant, which is how I have that map. I go through those gates quite a few times so i have seen the security on them regularly. Also, the guards know me so I may be able to help get through with minimal problems. As for why, well."

He paused here and shifted his weight slightly, allowing himself to get a more comfortable seat.

"The Central 46, in their obviously infinite wisdom, locked one of my friends away for something he had nothing to do with. I will not let that injustice go unpunished."

Ryu had listened quietly for the others to discuss and share their visions about options to do, if things would go haywire. He had already finished his bowl of stew, as his thoughts flew in his head. But it only took him a moment to decide on what type of fighting he was going to use. There was nothing like the feeling of steel cutting flesh, and the spilt blood made the young rebel excited even more than usual.

"Orion-sama, I'd like to be in the close fighting group," Ryu finally spoke out under strands of his hair.

[wc later]

"And I will be right there with you.” the former Confederate added, raising his empty bottle to the sky in salute to Ryu, "We’ll be where the fighting funnest. I guarantee it.” Funner than where those others were going, at least. A scouting mission sounded way too complicated for his tastes. He had never been part of a scouting mission when he had been alive. That just was not the type of man he had been, and it was not the type of man that he was now. This was especially true when he realized that they were both the same man, just in a different time period.

But, Samuel thought, casting a sideways glance at the widow Mitsuko, I was and will always be the type of man who can appreciate a good drinker. It was odd, but a girl who could handle her liquor had always been one of the things that just got his blood boiling. Maybe I could see if that leads anywhere, for the night at least. Gotta be careful, though. Widows are some of God’s craziest women. They tend to get upset at any thought of love, even if it’s just the physical kind. Shrugging, the Southerner returned to his guitar. It was not like it mattered that much. Things like these either worked out or failed miserably, and neither one increased his chances of dying. The only difference, in fact, is that one ending would let him leave camp tomorrow with a slightly larger smile on his face.

[255/950]

It was all very amusing, how casually these men and women spoke of battle. He would have assumed that they would be incredibly cautious when fighting the ebony-clad warriors that are the Shinigami. There was a reason no spiritual race was capable of bringing and end to them. They were a formidable species, no doubt. Chikao sighed to himself. It was almost starting to sound like he admired those blasted Death Gods...

Chikao carefully weighed his options; he had been analyzing every bit of information he could wrap his mind around since this conquest for liberation had begun. He was just as ready for it as the next person, but he understood the precautions needed a little bit better than most. When it came to the actual fighting, they had a chance of posing a real threat to the Shinigami. As a number of people began volunteering to be at the front of the assault, fighting using nothing but their own bodies and their furious spirits, Chikao stood of quietly and walked closer to the center of the circle.

"I do not mean to be a spoil sport," he began in the most even of tones, "But let me remind you of one crucial fact; while it is true that the Shinigami are not allowed to use lethal force, they are sure to have an arsenal specifically for the purpose of quelling an uprising from the citizens of the Rukongai. The Central Forty-Six is too paranoid to not have something planned in the event that the mistreated suddenly gain a voice and speak out." The crowd fell silent for that moment, as the citizens of Kanda took in the information. "I suggest that you, my dear people, proceed with caution. The race known as the Shinigami are, as you all are well aware, quite fiendish.

"As for myself, if it would please you Orion, I would like to be apart of the ranged-fighting unit." As he turned to go back to his seat, Chikao gave Orion a meaningful look, hoping to remind the revolutionary about his special powers.

[348/542]

Chikao was right about one thing – Shinigami were a group of fiends. They always got something on their sleeves to make sure that the mistreated people of Kanda remained silenced. It happened long enough in Mitsuko's eyes, and she wanted to make sure that the district got the compensation it deserved from those ivory-clad idiots. The Kanda Incident would always be part of the Gotei's dubious history in terms of Seireitei-Rukongai relations.

Ritsuko had waited all this time seek vengeance against the establishment. This was more than avenging her husband and kids. It was about countless others that had suffered though same nonsense and weren't able to survive such conditions. Her light blue eyes burned with determination. The time to war against the Shinigami drew nigh.

"I will be part of the long-ranged unit as well," she told Orion. "It is time that they feel our centuries-long wrath." Ritsuko gave Chiako a glance, but nothing more. "Though the caution is well appreciated, we do not want to have any regrets after today."

[172/747]

Orion stepped slowly when he moved to stand beside the campfire. He remained quiet, feeling the warmth of the heated flames as he let their conversations carry on for some time. Doubts still lingered in the air, but he made no protests to quell them. There were enough voices arguing against their woes.

Instead, as the crowds ebbed to a hushed silence, Orion spoke deeply, “You have all come this far, traveling together for nearly a month and gathering more and more members to join our cause. We have moved together, trained together, ate together, rested together. And tonight, we stand before the gates of Seireitei as a single, cohesive collection of men and women ready to inflict justice. We are the United Kanda Insurrection.

“I recognize that some of you are fearful. I understand that some of you have doubts that continue to linger. It is true -- our revolution may fail, our warriors may be subdued, and although shinigami are not allowed to kill us, fatalities are not impossible. Leave, choose to desert us if you want. I will not detain you here like prisoners against your will.

“But if you choose to go, if you feel disposed to give up on the eve before our assault, then hear this… Remember the reasons you held on for so long. Why are you still here among us, pushing yourself through weeks of arduous travel and years of exhaustive training? Whether it be decades, months, days, what purpose did you have in joining the Insurrection upon the initiation of your membership? What was the motivation for joining our ranks as a tired and weary rebel? How did you feel upon joining? There was surely passion and enthusiasm. Can you still feel the boils of heat and dynamite of awaiting glory and salvation? I have seen each of you, spoken to each of you. I have seen the flames of justice ignite vividly in your eyes.

“Remember that this is no sudden, trifling matter. This is not a decision based on sheer fervor and impulse. We are here now because of five hundred years of continued pain and anguish. We have reached this pinnacle moment because we have tried to forget, we have tried to move away and relinquish the burden of the Gotei’s past sins… And yet, time and time again, we always realized the same ill-fated truth… Without righteousness, our lives will forever be in turmoil.

“The shinigami have known about our pains, and they have done nothing. We have discussed this situation over and over again, debated the positives and negatives, and tried to find a common solution. But none exists! To conquer Seireitei in this bitter campaign of carnage and combat is our only solution!

"Remember who you are. Remember your pasts. Know what you deserve."

With those words, he felt the night air gain confidence and morale.

“Now…” Orion looked over their faces, waiting for any of the men and women around him to show a hint of readiness to abandon. “Any of you who still feel the need to desert our ranks, go. No one will stop you.”

He waited; he watched. His eyes roamed, yet there was no anger or displeasure in his gaze -- only a neutral readiness for whatever may ensue. To his satisfaction, everyone stayed in place, watching their leader with understanding and a new feeling of tranquility.

“Good. Now I want all of us to focus on our modes of attack. As you already know, most of you…” He turned to the new merchant named ‘Professor,’ “are companions who I have known and trusted for years. I will give each of you a specific duty. The rest of the United Kanda Insurrection is divided by colored bands that were given to them concurrent with their Ring of Nine Tears.”

He turned to those who spoke up about preferring long-distance fighting. “Chikao, Ritsuko… The two of you will lead the yellow group to the Southern gate. Take the long-distance artillery with you -- bows, cannons, catapults. I will need you to act as a distraction as the rest of us break through the Western gate.”

“Kyran, Ryu, Samuel, Josephine, the Professor, and Scarlett…” He paused as he put one hand gently on his fiancés shoulder. “…will come with me to the Western gate. We will line a small hole with our explosives and enter.

“Once inside, we will separate into four groups. Each group will go to the closest corresponding guard tower and activate the emergency gate. Vell and Josephine will go to the Northern gate to let the red team enter. Ryu and Samuel, I want you two to take the Southern gate. Be wary there. That area will be on high alert due to the long-distance strikes from the yellow team.

“Kyran and Scarlett -- once inside, stay at the closest Western gate. Open the gateway for the green squad.” He squeezed the indigo-haired woman’s shoulder, hoping to reassure her of his change in plans. “The Professor and I will move the farthest to the opposite Eastern gate. The blue team will be waiting for us there.” Although he originally intended to go to the Eastern gate with Scarlett, he found it crucial to personally observe the merchant’s actions. Leaving him alone with the other members left Orion with a disconcerting feeling of anxiety.

“Do you all have your personal maps?” The men and women nodded. “Good. Once the gates are opened, we shall fight our way to the center. Any questions? If you are satisfied, you may relax until we obtain the signal to move.”

this thread IS ending tonight. so start writing your characters' conclusions

The figure of that man irritated him greatly. ’Professor’? Rayon commented to himself, folding the red flag in his hands, who does he think he is? It was clearly the kind of person that thought highly of themselves and tended to shun people they deemed lower than their own standing. That was exactly the kind of behaviour the Central Forty-six had got them all used to. The gaunt revolutionary could not fathom why his leader wanted such a man into his own group, that thought was completely out of his understanding. Even if it was to keep a close eye on the bizarre merchant, Rayon himself could have covered that role.

Rayon shook his head to clear his mind: he had already accepted a different yet important job, and he would rejoin the main army later on. After all, someone needed to orchestrate their timing and check that the situation was favourable. With an ear to his scouting companion, the scrawny man considered the other people around the campfire one more time. That might be the last time many of them would see each other alive, for even Rayon was not immortal. He especially lingered on the features of those that had chosen to be in the close-fighting group, for theirs was the riskier position. He nodded to them in a silent acknowledgment of their worth, shunning at the same time those that had chosen the long-range team, even if their role was vital as well.

It was with difficulty that Rayon didn’t retort to one of those pavid - was it Chikao his name? – who continued to put forth preoccupations and doubts. The scarred rioter would know how to deal with such scum, but Orion charmed them all with a long speech and a much more detailed plan of the battle ahead. Rayon spent a minute or so to store the names of everyone and their future locations. Once that was done, he bowed profoundly in the direction of their leader, before touching his comrade lightly on a shoulder.

“Time to move, my friend,” Rayon said with a gesture of the hand, “we need to get ready, or we’ll miss the moment…”

[1575] FINAL

Scarlett merely shrugged at the thought of a change of plans, it was just the way Orion was, and always had been. To be blunt, it would’ve been more awkward for him to stay with his original plan instead of something like this and if that had in fact happened, then she would’ve been somewhat frightened.

Somewhat.

Lowering her head, she bit in his ear playfully, turned around rather majestically and strolled off to get her belongings – aka her sword as it was, perhaps, the one thing she would never leave out of anything. She had never once in her entire life left her home without taking her trusted long sword. It was as much a part of her soul as a zanpakutou was to those shinigami.

She smiled faintly upon returning as she sheathed her blade.

[FINAL:137/371]

Sorry for only two posts, I've been ill plus, I hate you guys - Alexis excluded.

Josephine listened to Orion’s words. Now was the girl’s chance to leave without restraint if she wanted to…now was her chance to go back to life as it was…but ‘the professor’ was right to stop her before. She couldn’t possibly turn back now. There was nothing left for her in this district or in this life. She had no choice but to keep going.

As Orion called out the teams, the short haired girl leaned down and picked up a black leather bag she had kept at her side most of the night. As she heaved the full sack, it muffled with sounds of shifting metal and tools. What was inside, well, she’d just have to surprise Seireitei with that later. For now, she walked over to the unkempt man, Vell, and scratched at her nose ring in silence as she quickly looked up at him.

Waiting for his move, Josephine kept her head hung low, and mumbled from beneath the hood a simple, “Hey.”

[165/889] Final

“Oh, so I get the pleasure of spending time with the head honcho, eh? Not a problem. I welcome your…..company.”

He knew what this was. He knew exactly what was happening. He was under suspicion. And rightfully so, to be honest. He had shown up with a map that, in all honesty, a merchant had no use having, saying things he had no business knowing. Instead of giving him a reason to attack by denying the suggestion, he simply smiled and nodded. He would gladly give his solitude if it helped the plan.

“If that is your order, Orion, I will follow. Oh, and, don’t worry. I have plenty of weapons.”

He spread his arms, revealing a coat of leather mail under his clothing and belt straps lined with dozens of throwing knives. His peaceful smile, now shining in his eyes, suddenly seemed like he could do things that even the most hardened of the gathered would shiver at. A few curious rumblings made him chuckle.

“I’m a merchant. It pays to have layers of protection. Now then, if you don’t mind, hall we go? If you like, we can make it appear like I am heading into seireitei to conduct business and you all are my bodyguards. That will get us close enough to act without as much resistance. Of course, that’s only if that meets with your approval.”

540 FINAL

Orion's final speech was very moving, to say the least. His words carried that burning fervor that he hoped to instill in the citizens of Kanda, and many of them seemed to be affected by the charisma that seemed to radiate from his very being. It was curious, the way he had managed to sway nearly the entirety of a people that had been oppressed and mistreated for decades and turn them into a revolutionary force that aimed to take down those who had wrought misery and hell upon them; the Gotei Thirteen. The air was absolutely humming with tension; each individual that had gathered around that single, amber flame seemed to resonate with the desire to transcend their trials and tribulations and fight for that which all of them thirsted after; revenge. It was almost palpable, the amount of rage and anguish that feasted upon each soul that stood before Orion. The fire was very symbolic indeed; it was their collective spirit, their blazing passion that promised to bring an end to those wretched Shinigami. Embers danced gently in the air as the orange flame danced, almost as if it were feeding off of their desire to win. Chikao smiled at the fire.

"Very well then," remarked the man as his scarlet gaze passed over the face of the woman who was to be his partner in demolition. The way she carried herself - her words, movements, and even her facial expressions - made her seem quite dangerous; her threat was spoken with such conviction that Chikao believed it immediately. She would do everything in her power to squeeze every drop of retribution she could from the Shinigami. "I look forward to working with you Miss Ritsuko," he said with a courteous nod of the head. "I look forward to seeing our plans reach fruition."

[306/848]

Samuel Walker idly watched as the group dispersed, each going their separate ways to wait for the attack to begin. He glanced at Ryu, his own partner in this upcoming engagement, and considered whether or not it would be a good idea to follow the example set by everyone else.

Nah, he decided almost instantly, he looks like he can handle himself in a fight, and I doubt that the guy would stab me in the back. Besides, the Southerner thought as he looked once again at Ritsuko, I might have more ‘pressing’ matters to attend to. Standing with bottle and guitar in hand, he slowly walked to where the widow was standing, right next to that Chikao guy. He didn’t say anything, though. All he did was walk past the two, offering a friendly and inviting smile towards Ritsuko as he passed. Samuel would wait until she was alone before actually asking her, though. He didn’t want to make a complete fool out of himself in public. The guy had some sense, after all.

FINAL: [175/1125]

It was then that the majority of their group had begun to clear out. Tomorrow was the big day, and Chikao suspected that most would try and get a good night's sleep before they waged war in the morning. The rogue himself had been anticipating battle for some time; after years upon years of planning and waiting, he would finally be able to bring all of his hatred for that White Walled city to bear. It was truly a momentous occasion for the people of Kanda. Finally, they would have that which they lost longed for. When all was said in done, they would emerge on top of those wretched Shinigami. He would enjoy unleashing every last explosive, every last ounce of his powers, on his enemies.

Chikao bowed eloquently before the thinning procession, and before he turned to leave, leaned closer to Orion, so that no one would hear his words. “Do not forget to use those powers if you must for the good of the people.” With one last meaningful gaze, Chikao left the campfire.
