[Shini] Week 214 : For Great Times II

Wow, another auction? Yuurei thought as soon as she saw the posters a week ago. Well, the time had come and if it wasn't for the naughty little rumormongers around the division, she probably wouldn't have remembered about the auction. If she was bad at anything, she was terribly bad at remembering dates.

* * *

Eh, it doesn't look crowded as the last time, but it's spectacular.

Her auburn eyes searched the place for any acquaintances at the back but there was none, and she almost chided herself for going late -- that is, until a hand waving in front of her face caught her attention. "Oh sorry," she quickly apologized to the woman and muttered a slight bit of thanks as a pad was handed to her. The ebony-haired arcanist glanced at the stage where a man stood, whose face was nothing but a blur due to her distance.

Without any further ado, she walked down the aisle and sat on one of the empty chairs. Well, not that she had any intention of bidding for a captain, really, but she was quite curious of how it would work out. She was there just for the fun of it, but who knows?

She walked towards the aisle and motioned towards the first person she knew -- not that much, but probably enough to be an acquaintance of sorts. If all those sea of colors made her peers indistinguishable, it was quite hard to mistake the man's modified arm. "Hello there, Lucas!" She greeted brightly as she took the seat beside him.

Adelaide was about to retort something witty, something she hadn’t figured out yet, to the advancement of TenTen-san, who now needed a new nickname, when she was quickly silenced.

It had only been a couple weeks since she last saw Yuu-chan, and now here she was, mere feet away, talking to that insufferable Lucas. Adelaide drank from Raury’s gourd defiantly. We might’ve not left on good terms, but she could at least say hi, Adelaide thought judgmentally. Then again, she reconsidered; maybe the shorter hair threw her off? Still, the Reminiscence choker and emerald hair clips should’ve been enough of a hint.

Adelaide certainly wasn’t going to be the first to greet the other, though! No, it was Addie who had her heart broken! More alcohol burned down Addie’s throat. She shouldn’t need to be so damned apologetic around Yuurei!

"Twelve hundred!”

Adelaide had no idea why she placed that bid, but she threw her arm and "Fourteen” sign into the air with gusto. Maybe it was an effort to distract herself, but if it was it was both ill-conceived and foolhardy.

Orin looked at his comrade with a confused but amused expression, "Wasn’t the idea to scheme about acquiring Captain –"

"Shush!” Adelaide interrupted. She knew what he was going to say and didn’t need that kind of negativity right now. Surely there was a clever ploy that could emerge from this.

Picca let someone else handle the main recording of who was bidding as that person was much better at it. The new auctioneer was pointing to people, acknowledging their bids while at the same time drumming up intensity and urgency with psychological rapid speaking. This left Picca free to oversee other matters, such as the arrival of other important people.

She stepped off to the side and slid off the side of the stage. A smile spread across her face upon seeing Captain Makoto.

"Good day Captain Matsumara, I'm glad ye could make it." She faltered a bit upon seeing Fumika. Hmm, awkward. Then again, they were engaged for a really long time already. "And good day Miss Fumika. Why din, don't you sit and have a drink. Captain Matsumara, I will be requiring your assistance shortly but for now, please enjoy yourself as well." Picca nodded appreciatively at both of them.

Her attention was suddenly taken by the arrival of a flustered Captain of the Tenth.

She held up both hands defensively while forming a sentence. "Owah, eeer, yeeeah, I mean, did you not see the posters right outside yer division?" A quick glance back to the crowd was taken to confirm that there were indeed members of the mystics there. That meant she did put one in at the gates of the Tenth. "Yeah, posters at yer division gates. No special tricks like self erasing ink when in the presence of too much spiritual pressures. I fully let my intentions be known this time."

A worried, toothy smile appeared on Picca's face.

Turning his head he saw the beautiful Yuurei coming towards him. He was happy to see she was well and growing strong. He greeted her back and was a little shocked when she sat next to him. Glancing up the other woman he could tell she was a bit shocked when Yuu ignored her. He could not help but chuckle inside at her. he sat back again his chair as he placed an arm around Yuu's shoulder pulling her close as his eyes went back to the stage as he raised his number.

"Two thousand!"

There are words for rage. There are words for anger. There are words for disappointment, despair and regret. There are words for hate. There are words for all sorts of emotions.

Adelaide needed none of them.

Had Adelaide’s heart been a cannon, she’d fire this feeling upon the happy couple, ending both of them with the kind of agony she felt right now.

If she wasn’t already dead, she’d want to die.

Her mind drifted through various ways to harm Lucas while she sat, fuming. She wanted to tear to pieces the duo next to her. Bastard. She couldn’t bring herself to hate Yuurei, which made her hate Lucas all the more.

Thankfully, she was enraged beyond the capacity for rational thought, which prevented her from bidding again. Instead, she drank. Heavily. Angrily. Her body visibly trembled with her out-of-control emotions and her reiatsu pulsed as she wasn’t able to keep hold of her control over it.

Adelaide, Lashiel started, but stopped speaking. What would she say that would be useful?

An obnoxiously loud voice called above the din, his challenge breaking out over the others. "Three-thousand!"

The bid left in its wake a curiosity for whoever had placed such a hefty one. At the rear of the crowd they found a single man, stained head-to-toe in soot and oil and with the pungent smell of brimstone about him. Grinning mischievously at the surrounding crowd, he eyed up the offered captain with a healthy interest as to what traps might be capable of if they were involved with, say, a healthy dose of trinitroluene.

Looking about with the sly grin dimming occasionally only to break out in full force again, he eagerly awaited for the opportunity to show up another of those present.

Yuurei was rather surprised and flustered. Yes, that's what she felt as soon as the Mystic's arm touched her skin. For all she remembered, they weren't even close, to begin with. But then again, there was something inside her that told her not to retort about it. After all, she did catch him at least half-naked back in the Tenth -- this might be his payback time for the random intrusion. Still, it didn't justify for the discomfort she felt.

"Twelve hundred!" A familiar voice spoke, and she looked farther from Lucas.

If it wasn't such an unfortunate day. There she was, the woman whose romantic advances she just turned down, and here he is, his arm over her shoulders. Well, it seemed like someone was in hot waters, boiling hot and ready to magically morph into lava just to scorch her skin.

"Oh, hi there, Addy-chan! I... I didn't see you there!" The arcanist spoke in a pitch that surprisingly went higher than her usual tone. There was an audible nervousness in the petite shinigami's voice, and her smile did very little to cover that up. "Looks like you're enjoying some time with your male friend there!"

All Yuurei wanted was to avert the attention. If Adelaide got over her and found herself happy with the man's company, then it might turn out for the better. And if she got the wrong impression of what she hinted at, well, shit.

Oh god, why?

The betting process had been repeated enough times to bore Udo. He had found a new target, so he would either get him through this contest, or through other means later. With a dispassionate look the amethyst-eyed reaper announced his last attempt to capture Haresuno at this time.

"Four thousand!”

[50/297]

"We both know that’s your arena and not mine,” Adelaide sniped.

She had gone a little too far, Ouch, that was harsh. She sighed, trying to get a grip on her remarkable rage. "Sorry,” she apologized, weakly. She wasn’t sure if she meant what she said or not, but she did completely feel bad for saying it aloud. She was pissed, in every sense of the word. She wanted to strangle Lucas.

She’d bid to distract herself, but honestly couldn’t afford it at the moment. So, she settled for more aggressive comments. "I’m a lesbian, Yuurei. Some would think that the poetry and chocolates would have tipped that hand pretty clearly.” Again, she felt apologetic, "Sorry, again. I’m a little drunk.” Yeah. That totally was the reason.

The thin, sickly-looking assassin could only sigh as he waited for his target to be put up for auction. Sitting there among the shinigami of the other divisions of the Gotei, Tsuneo felt as if he was in an alien, unfamiliar world. Ever since he had reemerged in the realm of the living, it had been one dire situation after the other, one mater of life and death superseding another. Out here though, far away from the realm of those who’s lives were based on killing, things were far more frivolous, superficial. People were dying so this could all happen, good people, his people. Sacrifice for the good of others. He supposed that that was the life of an assassin extracted to its core essence.

Blinking in surprise, Haresuno wondered just what it was that these people hoped for with him. Lucas he could understand - he’d done plenty to warrant some payback from the man -, but the others baffled him.

His eyes danced back and forth between bidders, but against the sea of people filling the rows of chairs, he could only guess. So much for an acute eye-sight.

Yuurei he remembered, vaguely, but the other voices seemed even fainter to his memory. Did he know them from somewhere, or did they just know him? "Remind me to start listing people I meet and offend,” he commented quietly to himself.

Next turn will be 111 >:D

Someone was trying to outbid him; this was something he could not let happen. He had been looking for and praying for an opportunity to get back at Hare, this was his chance.

"Six Thousand" He yelled again as he raised his hand, hare was his.

[308]

"Bids for Captain Haresuno are closing soon," the auctioneer said. "Current high bid is six thousand kan."

Upon hearing that, Picca turned her attention to the next captain. In order of arrival, that would be Captain Makoto Matsumara of the Fourth. She innocently sidled over.

"Excuse Miss Fumika but I will be borrowing your Makoto now."

With help from another staff member, the captain was lead up onto the stage, on the other end from Haresuno. Picca moved over and whispered some new information to the auctioneer.

"Ah, and we are delighted to present Captain Matsumara!" the auctioneer introduced. "Always the gentleman and expert of the secretive chiyudou arts. Perhaps you can get a private demonstration if you win. Once again, bidding will start at two fifty kan. Remember, final bids for Captain Haresuno." He made a motion towards both captains in turn as he spoke about them.

The auctioneer pounded his mallet onto the lectern, creating a very recognizable sound.

"Bidding on Captain Uchiharu is over! Sold for six thousand. Please remain seated for now. You will have a chance to talk at the end of the event. Bidding of Captain Matsumara has commenced!"

[1046]

Ryoujin waited amongst the crowd for the last wagers for Haresuno, but the silence spoke volumes about just who had won the auction for him. Six thousand was a large sum, and the mere fact that so many different soul reapers bet so much for the first Captain being auctioned off meant that a good number of them were loaded with cash. Plus, no one did say that there was the possibility of someone winning more than one captain. Smirking at the thought of some competition, the Blood Templar rolled into view thanks to the nurse assigned to him. Clearing his voice, he finally declared, "I guess I'll go first! How about one thousand to start for Matsumara taichou?"

It seemed like he really was in for a rough ride. Provided Lucas was still feeling slighted. If so, there was nothing he could do about that. Haresuno’s way of teaching was not Lilith’s, nor was it Sayis’, and not many would agree with it.

Ilsa had shown him that.

Taking in a deep breath, Haresuno bowed to the crowd and offered a thank you to all the bidders. "It appears that I am to enjoy the company of a good friend for a day! Too bad I couldn’t get to know others, but that’s that.

"Lucas, let’s talk!” A good-natured laugh jumped from him as he jumped off stage.

Ya', done son.

Fumika’s blue eyes narrowed suspiciously at the completion of Makoto’s reassuring statement and after a moment of silent ire she spoke at last. "For once, it’s not your behavior I’m concerned with....”

And for once Makoto chose not to address the backhanded nature of Fumika’s response. He could certainly see where she was coming from. Though ever so slightly, it was a bit disturbing to witness the rapid decent towards madness from a young woman clearly despondent about something. But just when Makoto felt inclined to inquire as to why, Picca snatched him away and quickly ushered him to the stage.

Once at the center of attention, the nobleman smiled brightly to the large and diverse crown and gave a small but respectful bow towards it and the auctioneer in turn.

The hammer hit the lectern. "Sold," the auctioneer announced, "for one thousand to the person that didn't hear me say bidding starts at two fifty."

Picca immediately went into preparation for the next auction. Based on order of arrival, it would be Lilith, Mystic Captain. Hopefully, she wouldn't mind too much. It was for charity after all and there were signs at every division detailing the intent of this event. Even the Seventh had them despite it being mostly useless as the members were not allowed free roam.

Thinking about the Seventh, one very noticeable omission from her list was apparent. Picca sighed. There wasn't anything she could do about it but hope as there was still some time left before the end of the event.

Instead of telling the staff members to do it, Picca walked up to the next captain. "Hey Captain Lilith. That sounds nice don't you think? Ye really deserve it."

She was trying to work up the captain's mood. At the same time, Picca swung behind and gently guided Lilith towards the stage. "Please have fun with this. I'm sure everyone here is reasonable. Dinnae worry, I'll be watching all the dates tah make sure nothing bad happens." With that statement, she pushed the captain onto the stage.

With a press of the button, the microphone clipped to her uniform was turned on again. "Everyone, I present to you our third captain of the afternoon, Captain Lilith Maikeru! Also freshly promoted and master of mystical arts. I'm sure you all also know her for all the lovely parties. Like before, bidding begins at two hundred and fifty."

She threw the imaginary lead back to the auctioneer. He nodded and turned back to the crowd. "Bid on!"

[1337] Awww yeah

And Ish, post darn you.

Adelaide raised her Fourteen sign again, letting a lot of her anger release with that snipe at Yuurei and the copious amounts of alcohol she had been imbibing, "Three hundred on Captain Maikeru.” Surprisingly, for how much she had drank and how angry she felt, she sounded remarkably cogent. She had only a couple thousand she could drop on this and so opened bidding small, working on a more developed strategy as she did. Maybe a few small bids and then she’d fall silent. Yeah, that sounded good.

She really wanted to move somewhere else. She couldn’t, she had her fellow Briton’s booze, but she wanted to run and hide under a rock. Hell, after this, she might. The feeling in the pit of her stomach was altogether unpleasant, and she knew exactly where that feeling radiated from. But by bidding on someone she could easily find distracting, she hoped she could forget about how she felt seeing Yuurei so blissfully happy with someone so... well, with someone Adelaide thought was the portrait of pretention. And damn it, as a Briton of her era, she should be the pretentious one.

Having watched the event mostly in silence, Raury briefly considered bidding on a Captain. But then, what would he even do with a Captain for a day? The possibilities seemed both endless and pointless at the same time. Like a prisoner of twenty years suddenly given his freedom, only to realize he didn’t know what the fuck to do with it.

He was peripherally aware of Adelaide’s growing anxiety, though he had done his best to avoid involving himself in whatever conflict she was currently embroiled in. Her bid for the pretty woman currently on stage seemed odd to him, for some reason or another. What would she want with a Captain? And that one in particular? The whole bit still boggled him a little.

"You okay there, Addle?” He probably didn’t want to be involved in this drama, but damnit, upset woman in his proximity. He could not ignore his concern for the well-being of someone he considered a friend.
