Hey Everyone!

Thought it might be fun to rank your top 5 manga/anime of all time. You can sort based on enjoyment level, nostalgic level, or content level.

Since I'm not versed in manga/anime outside of Cartoon Network and Shonen, here's my list:

1. Naruto
2. Yu Yu Hakusho
3. Bleach
4. Gundam Wing
5. Detective Conan

Bonus: DBZ (nostalgic/first anime)
 
5 is kinda hard to do. I'm sure I'm forgetting something, but heregos!

Had to leave Bleach, Outlaw Star, Trigun, Birdy the Mighty, and a few others off the list because KAGO decided to make the list so damn short!

I limited it to 5 for the shake of forcing difficult choices, Ketchup :P . If I made it top 20, it'd be easy.

Geez, you people always wanting the easy way out.....

It's pretty telling that in general, I prefer a swords/sorcery type of setting and plot, and yet my top five all are more gun/modern type.

You'll notice that most of these are shorter series.

There are a bunch of other series that deserve high ranks (Bleach, Naruto, Gurren Lagann, Samurai Champloo, Soul Eater, etc), but these are the ones that really stand out to me.

My first anime was the movie Unico In the Island of Magic. Still hold a soft spot for it. For an actual series, it was Dragonball (the original).

I kid, I kid, Kaggles :)

The top two I put up, SamChamp and Bebop, are the ones that I can watch over and over again despite the incredibly sad way Bebop ended and the way that Fu, Mugen, and Jin. The little kid in me hoped they would stay together; not because it would leave open the possibility of a continuation of the series, but just because I thought they'd make a nice little band of friends. Again, the little kid in me.

And despite what the Bebop creator says, Spike is 100% dead in my mind.

I love Naruto because of its creativity and alluring plot. There is so much that we don't know about it whereas the only thing we don't know about Bleach is the unseen Bankais and the Zero Squad. Though I'm not as disappointed in Bleach as I know many are, it definitely has waned from my interests since the FKT arc.

GITS 2nd GIG introduced me to a new level/standard of anime. Where I was use to just fightmashing series, GITS required you to actually pay attention and made me think. I almost wanted to be a cop after watching this, but realized I don't have a robot body... meaning I couldn't shoot off a guy's ankle before he hit the ground... which is the whole point of being a cop, right?

Gundam Wing was simply awesome. Nuff said.

Kind of surprised to see that a majority of my favorite anime are mecha, yet my manga are ... actually pretty diverse. I resisted the urge to just throw down the top 5 harem manga I read/loved (or all of Ken Akametsu's work).

NGE was my first anime I ever saw, Jing was the first I read and those are by far my favorites. As far as NGE series goes, I much prefer the reboots that have been coming out over the originals. Both are good, but reboots are better imo.

Aside from Golden Boy, I think that all my favorite anime focuses on the human condition and theorize about that a great deal. Golden boy is the best lulz that has ever been made, period. I would also mention other works from Makoto Shinkai (5cm) as top favorites of mine. The photography work on his films is just superb. Hats off to Ghibli studio too, as well as Macross series and other things of old (DB, DBZ, Sailor Moon, SCC, etc...)

Manga was rather hard. I read a lot, like, a lot. Much like the anime list, the manga focuses on things that delve into the human condition.

But crys, yu yu hakusho? Yeah, exception. Togashi-sensei might have one of the best arts I've ever seen by the end of that manga, for realz. What he does with just three or four lines is amazing. Kenshin is just effing awesome like that. Slam Dunk is the prime example of what a sports manga should be. KareKano is the most human manga I've ever read, and the most accurate in expressing feelings and other intimate stuff about people.

I'd like to point that I'm a big Adachi Mitsuru fan as well, his drawings and story may always be similar, but it amuses me every time. Oh Great! work's are also something that I like, mainly Air Gear and Tenjou - while the latter may have one of the most convoluted plots of all time, it did touch some very nice themes during its run, and god, does that guy knows how to draw gurls! I also read a shitload of CLAMP and recommend it to just about everybody that doesn't bother reading shoujo.

I say go all the way man, read the shoujo, the shounen, the seinen, the jousei, EVERYTHING! Otherwise you're missing out. Even the yuri and yaoi have some good stuff if you can deal with it. Word.
 
Kaze's Top 5 Memorable Manga

1. Shaman King/Kang Zeng Bang
2. Fullmetal Alchemist
3. Yugioh
4. Cardcaptor Sakura
5. Inuyasha

Inuyasha was an epic, noun not adjective, that stands out for me because it not only held memorable story arcs both overarching and subtle, but had characters which kept my interest even over the length Inuyasha ended up being. Cardcaptor Sakura was the first manga I read fully. The concept of magic imbued cards, a sweets devouring monster confined in a body resembling a stuffed animal, and a great magician who created them really helped me to enjoy the series. Yugioh, what can I say, never have been able to read all this series. I know what happens, but I'd still like to be able to read it all just to say I had. At times dark, its integration of magic with games was unique, characters I found interesting, and its eventual integration of almost everything plotwise to lead to its ending really can not compared with very any other series of similar nature. Not to mention, a big bad who had a cameo in one of the earlier arcs and then comes back en force at the end to be the Final Villian, not boss though, of the series. Fullmetal Alchemist was long for a monthly manga, but really shows what all can be done in over 100 chapters of a decent chapter length series. Having good plot twists, the series dingus the brothers questing for being made from human sacrifices being the intial twist that later was given more of a twist to it by their own Father who they did not really want to see again being one, characters so memorable that you never forget them, love them, and/or hate some of them. Shaman King/Kang Zeng Bang, I have this as number one because it is proof that a good series ended before its time can and sometimes does get finished by the author. It had characters I could easily relate to, backstories that kept the story interesting, and most importantly, a unique battle system/concept.

I may do an anime one later, but this list is it for now.

Of course there are lots of other stuff that I really enjoy. These I like best for the settings and the characters. Plot is secondary. Action? Meh, it's cool if it's there, it's cool if it's not.

Top Five Anime

1. Katanagatari
2. Eureka Seven
3. Bakemonogatari
4. Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko
5. Gundam Unicorn

Katanagatari is an amazing series with a totally unique visual style that I can't recommend enough. Seriously, just go watch it.

I really tried to limit myself to one mecha series, but Eureka Seven and Gundam Unicorn do a pretty good job of illustrating what I like about the genre in two very different ways: e7 defined by a character driven narrative with its giant robots playing a secondary role (also the best anime OST in history), while Gundam Unicorn's classic but never generic story is backed by the best animation I've seen outside a Miyazaki film.

Bakemonogatari and Denpa Onna because SHAFT boner and baseballllllll. Really though, they both tie back into my fondness for unique storytelling experiences backed by stellar animation devices. Also Denpa Onna is moe as hell of course I love it.

Five is hard to do -_- So I'll do the five on manga and five on anime.

DBZ get's its own category for being a gateway anime.
