[10th/10th] Week ---: Round Three: Adele Pierce versus Annika Reynolds

Rainforest.jpg

The cascading of a distant waterfall joined the chorus of life near the babbling rapids of the Amazon. Life fought for its place in the order of things all around, from frogs eating flies to more exotic creatures, like giant snakes or hostile fish, brawling over life and territory in the often unkind arena of natural selection. Judgment in the jungle is swift, and the weak are seldom forgiven. One of the unlikelier instances of animals vying for their place in the cosmic balance of rainforest ecology was about to unfold: the struggle of the domestic cat and the mentally unbalanced fox was certainly a spectacle even in a corner of the earth as unknown and unforgiving as the Amazon.

Annika’s tail swished to create a gentle breeze in the humid air. What a horrible place this was! No people, no art, just heat and it really needed to just rain and get its melodramatic humidity over with. It was called a ‘rainforest’, not a ‘humidforest’, after all. She tilted back her head and rested it on a tree, her kitsune ears twitching atop her rusty auburn head.

Suited to the weather, she wore shorts and a top that left her midriff bare, and her pale American Northwesterner skin glistened with a sheen of sweat. She had let Mystery Man talk her into this tournament, and she thought it was a good way to learn more about the people the next volume of her manga was going to explore – she wanted to write about shinigami after that redhead’s green light defeated a horrible Wraith on Mount Fuji. But all she knew about these people was that Mister Fuku didn’t like them and Mystery Man was nervous around them. She’d only met a couple and one had been a scardy-cat green-haired boy with a drab style of dress.

Had she known that the weather was going to be so unkind, she might’ve just found a nice mixer instead. They must’ve had them, right? Since they all seemed to know one another. It made her fox ears droop – she didn’t really know anyone. Even Mystery Man Zakki wasn’t exactly a friend, and she hadn’t heard from Mister Fuku in so long! So lonesome... she needed more friends.

Dense undergrowth covers and monolithic trees tower above. The air is heavy, humid and fully saturated with water. Sudden rain-bursts common, drenching the location with several inches of water within seconds before fading. The terrain is unsteady, with large boulders and uneven cliffs forming the landscape. An immense waterfall created by the Amazon River cascades near the center of the arena.

I'll post stats once Annika's Awakening is retooled for current AH mechanics. In the meantime, this is a picture showing Annika's current age, and this is the picture of Annika that her appearance is based upon.

Adele appeared directly in front of Annika, dropping the illusion of Koutaizumai and allowing her reiatsu to flare out from its repression. She wore a dark green top with short sleeves and matching bike shorts in accordance to the weather and terrain. Her hair had been pulled into a single braid that had been pinned up to keep the thick dark locks from overheating the back of her neck and two purple cat ears protruded from the top of her hairdo.

"Hello, I'm Adele Pierce," the nekogami greeted her opponent cheerily, seemingly unbothered by the heat. She offered the red haired a handshake, smiling. "I'm a Mystic of the Tenth Division. Who are you?" From her previous experience, being rude was an unwise choice. This time, the feline Mystic would do things right. Just because they would be trying to beat each other up within the next five minutes didn't mean she couldn't be friendly now.

Hazel eyes drifted over the human's form. Did all humans have fox ears and tails? She would have to ask Adelaide about that. Perhaps her big sister could explain to her the mystery of live humans. The fact that Adele used to be a "live human" escaped her notice.

Silly child, a Siberian tiger chuckled within the depths of the feline young woman's mind.

The fox-eared girl picked her head up. Those other animal ears... that was interesting. And Cat-chan wasn’t dressed in the same drab way she had seen shinigami dress before. So fascinating! “Hello, Pierce-san!” KITTY! “I hope we can be good friends when this is over.” Her tail swished faster behind her, clear energy and excitement looking for a place to express itself while she tried to keep herself mostly calm. She did a bad job of that, typically, but Mystery Man Zakki seemed to want her to be ‘professional’.

“I’m Ani! I’m a mangaka for the Cerberus Corporation!” she said it as if Cerberus actually employed manga artists. She was a mangaka, and she worked for Cerberus, but the company was actually probably rather happy that the two jobs had limited overlap. “Do all shinigami have kitty ears? I didn’t notice them on Miss Red or Mister Green, but maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention!” She was a bit busy painting giant birds of prey to trap a horrible Wraith – Annika’s name for hollows – at the time. It wouldn’t surprise her if she had missed that she was working with catboys and girls. The kitsune found the notion positively endearing!

"Sure we can be friends after the Tournament is over," Adele agreed with a smile, this human sure was nice, "I don't have any human friends. You're actually the first human I've met!" Even if she had to fight the fox eared girl, the nekogami was quite excited to meet a human. And one with animal ears at that! What luck. "And no, not all shinigami have kitty ears. I haven't met another soul reaper with animal ears yet, do any other humans have fox ears and a tail?" She asked the question with honest curiosity. Perhaps in her life as a human before she died and came to Rukongai she had had a fox tail and ears like everybody else.

Excitement aside, Adele felt a tad nervous. She knew nothing of human customs, how was she to ensure she didn't accidentally offend her new acquaintance? The Mystic decided to worry about it later. She might learn a bit about humans from this fight. The catlike soul reaper decided to label this fight as the most interesting and entertaining match of the whole tournament. Perhaps she was getting a little ahead of herself....

[193/413]

She was bubbling over with excitement! “Most humans don’t! Sometimes you’ll see people with animal ears or tails but they don’t seem to be real very often.” Or at all. But that wasn’t what was exciting Annika whatsoever. The fight wasn’t either, in fact she rather hated the idea. Instead, she was thrilled about the prospect of friendship with the nekogami. “So we can be special ear pals! Your nekomimi and my kitsunemimi!”

That was it.

The bubbling excitement finally erupted.

“Fantastic!” cheered the fox, before she tossed her hands in the air in a revelry and, in so doing, also threw a tiny capsule into the air. Quickly, a smokescreen descended allowing for the nimble fox to make her escape. If the battle was going to start, Ani wasn’t going to be anywhere near it.

Instead she hiked up into the tree branches above the catgirl ghost – catghost – and took a nice, quiet seat on a sturdy branch. She was going to need to have the shinigami occupied when the smoke cleared, and that meant painting, so she quickly pulled her brush and made something that took very little time to paint into the air.

As the smoke began to clear below, where Ani once was there now was a rather fierce looking miniature dinosaur, proportioned like a person-sized T-Rex. The creature roared as it came into the shinigami’s view, an intimidation factor to test what she would do.

Tethysane
This bubbly grey liquid is stored in a wrist-mounted bulb. When released, a dark grey cloud spreads out, rapidly obscuring the user from sight in a thick mist. This heavy fog continues spreading until it gradually thins out.
The user spends 100 reiatsu to activate this aerosol. It covers a 10m radius to begin with, centered on the user, and spreads out an additional 5m every round. When it reaches 25m (after three full rounds), the fog is no longer thick enough to conceal anyone inside.

Teihaiku [Air Hike]
A desperation move or merely a fancy trick, some of the most agile humans are able to literally jump on air. By spending 200 reiatsu, the human can create a platform of energy that allows them to push off or jump mid-air. This effect may be used up to three times consecutively before having to land.

Initial Awakening: Art Imitates Life
Realistic Depiction: At the cost of 5% Annika's reiatsu, a creature can be painted. Typically using a paintbrush for precision's sake, the creature must be outlined two-dimensionally in the air before taking three-dimensional form. The creature behaves the way Annika wants it to behave, and is able to be destroyed as per a normal reiatsu construct. No more than one construct may be created per turn, and no more than one per 20% Resonance may be maintained at one time. Annika must pay 250 reiatsu per turn upkeep to prevent 'decay', if she does not, the constructs decay at a standard barrier rate.

Adele coughed as she was surrounded by smoke before jumping backwards. Once the smoke had cleared some, a giant lizard like creature appeared before her. What is that? She wondered. But now was not the time for questions as she leaped into the trees.

Looking back at the T-Rex, the nekogami wondered what to do with it. I wonder if it's smart enough to break a cage... "Halt! Confine to these bars, Bakudou number twenty seven, Keeji!" A steel cage formed around the over sized lizard, confining it. The blue eyed shinigami studied the odd creature curiously from her perch. Then, looking toward Annika she asked, "What is that thing called? I don't think I've ever seen a lizard like that one in Rukongai."

Keeji - Bakudou #27, 100 Kidou

Description: Immediately after the spell is cast, a square-sided steel bar cage surrounds the opponent. The bars are 3 inches in diameter, and confine a person inside. This lasts two rounds plus one round per 1000 Kidou.

Incantation: Halt! Confine to these bars, Bakudou #27, Keeji!

Yeah, so T-Rex is in a cage for about 3 turns... unless it breaks it or something...

That’s no good, watched the fox-girl with a frown. Sure, she could probably have it burst free, but that’d take almost the same amount of effort as just painting something new, and she wasn’t prepared to do that just yet. So, she took her paintbrush and started again – elegantly painting in the sky, with no canvas and the paint of her ability forming a two-dimensional image. As the wings took shape, completing the image she wanted to paint, the image puffed out, growing much larger and more intense, adding detail and shading and dimension until finally...

... diving down from the sky was a giant bird, a golden eagle easily ten times their normal size, and it swooped over the caged reptile ancestor in it’s attempt to launch an attack on the shinigami!

Annika felt so proud of herself up in her tree. But this all tired her faster than it had since she was a little girl and she was already feeling it catching up to her. How it drained her to keep these projections afloat. It was a challenge, no doubt. More of a challenge than the kitty herself was being.

Adele looked at the golden bird coming at her and frowned. "Keeji." A steel cage formed around the avian creature, causing it to drop from the sky. Hopping down from the branch she sat on, the nekogami came closer to the bird to inspect it. It looks so real.. "Huh... well that's different. Hey, Ani-san, how many of these can you make?" The Mystic asked.

Without waiting for a response, she ran towards the sound of the other girl's reiatsu. She didn't want to fight odd summons, the shinigami just wanted a friendly spar with a human. Upon nearing the mangaka, Adele leapt, and then jumped off of thin air. "Found you~!" She sang cheerily, bounding forward to test the human's hand to hand skills.

[ Chikaihou Shinou ] - "Earthly Law Mastership"
Being dead is far different than living, as anyone in Soul Society can attest to, and one can sometimes bypass the physical laws of movement that one is normally accustomed to. True understanding as to what one can and cannot get away with is gained through experience.

This technique allows the user to condense reiatsu around their body or under their feet in the living world. This enables the user to slow their falls, extend their jumps, or even to stand in the open air. Shunpo cannot be used mid-air.

Requirements: 2,000 Reiatsu

Ani’s hand-to-hand skills sucked on a normal day. This thingie that the shinigami made for her to wear made them suck more. So, rather than be fair, the kitsune was very the opposite of that. As Adele was in mid-lunge, she was essentially a sitting duck. Even shinigami couldn’t just fly right? “Sorry!” she called as she flicked her hand toward the coming shinigami, the way someone might try to shoo insects, and a powerful jolt of electricity burst from her, shooting angrily at the shinigami assailing her. Those drugs Cerberus had her take were so crazy sometimes!

“Birdy, out you come!” The bird’s eyes gleaned with sudden strength and it began beating its wings hard, powerful winds being cast up by the ability. After a few flaps, it pushed so much wind that it shattered the kidou prison it was in, and the one the dinosaur was in besides. It couldn’t help but injure Rexy, but that was the cost of doing business, Annika supposed. Cracks began to form on the dino’s scaly skin, like a piece of glass was breaking.

The eagle flew up into the air and with a quick hop, skip and jump Annika was on his back. Gods she was exhausted already! But she was flying on her bird, and she felt the newfound strength her projections had kick in! It was nice, really, being able to do these things, but she wished she wasn’t wasting so much of her strength on things like shooting lightning. She should’ve been safe from physical harm mounted on her bird, right? At least Rexy's cracks were already sealing up!

Dynoac
A fluorescent blue liquid, the first reaction most agents have to this drug is sheer apprehension due to the color. Upon ingestion, the drug amplifies the electrical signals throughout the agent's nervous system, elevating it to the point where they are able to create and retain electrical charges throughout the body.
This injection grants the user the ability to create and control static fields. The user is able to condense fields they create, while simultaneously amplifying the opposing charges. This allows them to fire arcs of concentrated electricity from their hands. Each arc costs 450 reiatsu, with a range up to 3m long, 2m wide.

Initial Awakening: Art Imitates Life
Resonant Attack: Performance Art: Once per turn, Annika can channel 10% of her reiatsu into one of her constructs in order to deliver a powerful attack in the form that makes most sense for that construct - a painted Dragon unleashing a breath attack, or a giant snake having a venomous bite for instance. Despite perceived versatility, this in fact can be quite limiting, because the Performance Art ability of a painted whale might be described as 'rather underwhelming'.

True Awakening: Life Imitates Art
So Lifelike: Annika's creatures are more alive than ever, no longer subject to 'decay' and not requiring upkeep. They do more than simply prevent themselves from falling apart, however. While So Lifelike is active, the creatures projected by her art (not her Instillation Art), recover 3% of Annika's reiatsu per turn, divided among the current number of non-Instillation projections.

Adele decided that she didn't like electrical attacks very much. They hurt and had the unfortunate side effect of making her hair poofy. The electricity also had the effect of disturbing her focus and making her fall. Fortunately, the nekogami had some of the agility afforded the feline race and managed to land on her feet -just barely.

And then she noticed the T-Rex. It was free. "Well that isn't good..." The Mystic looked up again. Release me, child.

Sounds good, Cresh, "A tiger's silence is louder." The shinigami's reiatsu spiked as her shikai was released. In her hands, the Mystic held a pair of twin kodachi with electric violet handles. I wonder if it takes balance to fly that thing...

Adele did two things after releasing her Shikai. The first was to jump up in the trees to avoid the giant lizard thing that walked on two legs. The second was to remember her violin practice and play her kodachi like a stringed instrument. For Annika, the world would have suddenly slowed. Grey eyes watched intently to see how effective her technique would be.

Techs Used
Ability
Lithium High

Adele plays a song from the rock genre, her preferred song for this technique being “Lithium” by Evanescence, in order to speed up her or an ally’s reflexes by changing their perception of time. Using her reiatsu to excite the frequency at which the affected person's spiritual energy moves, she causes them to perceive everything in slow motion. Their physical speed will not be affected. Lithium high lasts as long as Adele plays once per turn and cannot be stacked with Pachelbel's Shield.

She had begun to paint again and the slow movement that accompanied her attempt weirded her out. She noticed Birdy’s wings beating slower, and Rexy trying to strike the tree with a body slam seemed slow as well. “Trrrriiiiiiippyyyyyyyyyy...” she even sounded in slow motion. This was odd. Of course, there were ways that could actually be a good thing, but it effectively made trying to do anything with ranged attacks completely and totally useless. She couldn’t tell how quickly anything was moving, not even Birdy or Rexy.

Thankfully, painting was a tactile thing as much as a visual one. Painting was part of Annika’s muscle memory, it was easy peasy even slowed down, but it did present some challenges. Was Adele still moving at normal speed? Was it just Annika slowed down? And would she be able to tell what song this was if it was in its proper tempo? All those questions and so few answers.

It felt like minutes, hanging in the air and painting. It all would be terribly relaxing if she weren’t concerned someone was going to shoot down Birdy and she wouldn’t notice until it was too late to do anything about it. But finish her painting she did, through the panic, and a six foot wasp slowly grew color and dimension and life before buzzing in a painful-to-hear low register and flying at the shinigami. This wasn’t going to get any easier, decided the slo-mo kitsune.

Adele nearly squeaked as a giant bug flew at her. A thousand reflections of her horrified face were visible in its compound eyes. Vicious looking mandibles snapped at her face as the nekogami jumped backwards. "Ah!" The Mystic sheathed her left sword, holding the other in both hands.

She slashed at the horrible insect with her right sword, cutting it in half before leaping out of the tree the T-Rex slammed into it. She back flipped through the air and then condensed reiatsu beneath her feet to create a perch. Hopefully the over sized lizard wouldn't be able to get her before she destroyed it. "Dragon's Breath!" Super heated flames spewed from her mouth aimed right for Annika's reptilian creation.

This fight was going to be rather challenging if the kitsune girl could just keep making creatures to fight her. She sprung away, not looking back to see if the flames hit. Crouching on a tree branch, she recalled her Shikai allowing her to surpress her reiatsu. A moment later, she turned invisible.

A skilled swordsman holds no fear in the face of his enemy's attacks and may stand his ground against them. In this way, the swordsman can channel his spirit into his sword and slice straight through flames, water, or even raw energy. This splits the attack around the user.

Only possible against attacks up to twice the cost of Ittouryoudan, this technique costs 250 reiatsu to use.

The nice thing about Annika’s style of fighting is she rarely got injured. The less nice thing was that it was hard to keep pace with her enemies. She really worked best in a support role, with Mystery Man Zakki doing the heavy-hitting, or with Mister Fuku using that finny lightsaber thing he liked so much. One-on-one she wasn’t as helpful as she would’ve liked.

The dinosaur was doomed, and honestly she didn’t feel too bad about that. When hit with her flames it burst, like the hornet had, into shards of what looked like glass before they faded away. But the shards of the hornet still lingered in the open air. Annika stretched out her fingers and pulled them back together, like a fist, and as she did the fragments of glass began to shoot back together. This hurt the painter somewhat, but as long as little Adele was busy with a bee, she wasn’t going to aim for Ani, who honestly wasn’t too big of a threat on her own.

The pieces pulling back together felt like an eternity, probably because of the effects of that girl’s abilities, but she had to do it regardless. She was so rubbish in a heads-up fight that she couldn’t allow this to degrade into that, and she needed to buy herself time to paint again. If she couldn’t paint some more, her ‘versatility’ wasn’t very versatile.

Painted in Blood
Initial Awakening: Art Imitates Life
Painted in Blood: When a construct would be destroyed per normal construct rules, Annika can pay an additional 5% to repair the painting, refreshing it to 'good as new' condition. This does not count against her Art Imitates Life creations for the turn.

Adele watched with horrified fascination as her opponent's creations were broken and the bee was restored. She couldn't have healed the lizard? The nekogami pouted. As much as she enjoyed life, she disliked over sized insects that tried to attack her. Well, the Mystic had never really been a large fan of bees to begin with, but now she could feel an active dislike towards the vile creatures forming.

But what to do now? If Ani kept making these creatures, she would be able to keep the shinigami away until Adele wore herself out battling these odd creations. How would she learn about her new ear buddy if she couldn't even get close? Perhaps she'd have to bring her opponent to the ground.

The Mystic dropped the illusion of Koutaizumai, but stayed hidden among the dense foliage. "Halt, confine to these bars, Bakudou number twenty seven, Keeji!" The nekogami whispered. The cage wasn't aimed for the newly reborn bee. The steel bars formed around the eagle Annika rested on and dropped towards the ground. Unless the kitsune human could make creatures really fast, she'd be forced to abandon her bird or break the cage. Hopefully she'd ditch the bird.

Adele moved quickly through the trees to get closer to where her opponent should fall. If luck was on the feline woman's side, her opponent wouldn't think to send the bee after her until she'd closed in on the human.

[239/1258]

Bars appeared around her and her bird, which didn’t seem like much of a problem until the top of the cage smacked into Ani’s head. Right. Gravity. She wasn’t a fan of that. It made her bird squak defiantly as it struggled to keep aloft, but it was definitely falling, and far faster than it could handle. If nothing was done, it and Annika would crash into the forest below and be left in a heap of magical metal. That simply couldn’t be allowed.

I huff and I puff! the kitsune thought, taking a deep breath and turning her head as much as was comfortable. She needed to aim for the bars, they’d be the weakest point of the cage. With all the wind she could gather, she exhaled, the powerful gust knocking the bars off the side of the cage. Her heel smacked into the bird’s side, causing it to shriek again and swivel in the desired direction, making the cage spin around them and the escape was a fairly simple one.

The magic prisons weren’t especially strong, but they were a pain to keep having to break free from. What was worse was that it left her and Birdy plummeting. Might as well use it, she figured, since she was going to be low enough to be hit by errant strikes anyway. The human found herself still laying flat against her bird, the way she had with the cage of magic crushing her, and her eagle went on a diving strike, close to the ground, to try and lure the shinigami out for the hornet’s waiting stinger. Risky, but worth it, Ani figured.

When the bird was low enough to the ground, Ani decided to take a risk and roll off its back into the dense undergrowth of the forest. She needed to keep up her pace or the rush of power she felt would start fading and she knew it. So, she galvanized herself, preparing for an attack in case she was noticed. She had almost no fighting ability, but she was pretty solid when it came to fleeing, so there was a lot to gain from drawing Adele toward her.

Of course, doing what she did made the combat that much more of a high-wire act.

Overdrive Time Begins Now!
First, stuff used. Balance which she's been passively using so far gets its OD upgrade:

Kinkou [Balance]
At the peak of their physical Fortitude, an awakened human can bolster their spiritual power as well. Fatigue fades away and the user's body replenishes itself. The user passively regains 300 reiatsu each round. At 100% Resonance, this is increased to 500 Reiatsu. Regeneration granted by Kinkou is applied to the user’s Fortitude Threshold.
Overdrive: A user may chose to impart their regenerative powers on an ally, allowing one player in the user’s radius to regenerate 500 reiatsu per round. While this effect is active, the user does not generate any reiatsu.

She primed herself with Bulwark

Bouheki [Bulwark]
An Advent human may brace themselves for an oncoming attack. By paying 1,000 Reiatsu, they surround their body in a thin film of Reiatsu, reducing the damage of the oncoming attack by that amount. This ability can only be activated once every other turn.
Overdrive: Bouheki now reflects some of the damage blocked as concussive force, throwing the attacker back from the user roughly 20 feet.

To break the cage she used

Chealon
A vial of foggy white liquid, when injected into the bloodstream it greatly amplifies the user's respiratory system. By allowing them to both intake and expel large quantities of air, this strain is often used for a large amount of air-related tasks.
Repulsion is a term coined for the ability of the agent to produce large gusts of air from their system. By paying 100 reiatsu, the user can launch a gust of air directly from their lungs to easily knock over or stagger opponents within 5m.
Properly applied, a gust of Chealon can also propel the user in the opposite direction, up to 5m.

If I need, I can add Fuubi to that.

Adele watched as Ani and the bird plummeted towards the ground. The cage was broken and then smashed as it hit the ground. Gotcha. The nekogami hurried towards the sound of her opponent's reiatsu. She paused after the cage crashed, but no sign of the distress that such a loud fall would cause was heard in a spike of reiatsu. Odd...

The shinigami paused, crouching in the treetops. She closed her eyes and allowed her large, purple ears search out Ani. There! Adele bounded towards her ear buddy, following the sound of the human's reiatsu. The spiritual pressure signature was getting further away and harder to hear, but that was alright. Annika made a lot of noise as she moved through the underbrush. The Mystic thanked Kami her cat ears could perceive physical sounds as well.

With the sharp hearing of a feline, the neko-Mystic tracked her opponent. "Dragon's Breath," she whispered, sending a hot stream of flame towards the human. She was sure the other would most definitely be able to dodge, even if Ani was burnt... humans could heal, right?

[182/1440]

Fire raining down upon her didn’t seem to bother her much, in fact a concussive shockwave of power shot out from the kitsune’s fragile body. That ‘bulwark’ thing worked really well! She loved how that felt, and it made the fire raining down on her feel like it wasn’t much of anything at all. But where it came from was a perfect way of zeroing in on the Mystic.

“Found you!” she hopped up into the air, jumping up on absolutely nothing to hop into the treetops, while Ani’s creations flew toward the kittygami. Easy peasy. Annika gripped a branch as her hornet and eagle prepared both to strike. She hopped on the air again and used the ability to jump on nothing to hop across the canopy. She needed some isolation. Again, she grabbed a branch and flung herself, hopping across the rich foliage. And a fourth time. She was moving fast, agile and lithe through the dense forest as if she were a creature of the rainforest herself.

She wasn’t. She was a fox. Didn’t really matter.

These again? Adele exclaimed mentally in annoyance. Sheathing her sword, she glared at the bird and the bee before pouncing. What was the point of exhausting herself by using up all her spiritual energy on these creations of Ani and then being too tired to spar with the human? Perhaps this was why Haresuno had been so frustrated with her habit of running away from him and trying to hide. It's no fun with no fight.

Grabbing the hornet by the antennae, she yanked, curling her pelvis towards her stomach to bring her legs up and slam them into the insect's thorax. "Kiap!" Adele released the bug's broken antennae and allowed the motion of her kick to bring her upright before springing towards the eagle.

She managed to land on the bird's head, but not without getting a scratch on her right forearm and breaking the odd creature the way she had destroyed the first giant insect. Fortunately, the nekogami was able to right herself and use the momentum of her fall to push off into a full sprint in Annika's general direction. As she ran, the Mystic began healing her wound -which turned out to be more of a gash than a scratch- with Reiki. The bleeding would be stopped by the time she found her ear buddy, but for now it stung quite badly.

Who knew fake animals could actually hurt someone?

Kit! Stop chasing her, that's what she wants! Crescendo spoke up.

Adele paused and crouched, breathing deeply from her run. She let the illusion of Koutaizumai cover her, rendering the shinigami invisible, to afford herself thinking time. Then what should we do?

Bring her to you.

How do I do that?

I have an idea....

It didn’t mean much to see the hornet go. Even the eagle’s day was done. Now all Annika’s eggs were in one basket. Now, pursuing Adele through the treetops was a looming shadow, blotting out the sun below. What harm could imaginary creatures do? The entire rainforest was about to find out the answer to that question.

A mighty roar shook the treetops as the horrible creature descended. It was a mighty black dragon, the scaly and fearsome kind common in European lore. Technically, since it’s forelegs were replaced with its nightmarish ashen wings, the gray creature was a wyvern, but it was a distinction the artist didn’t draw herself. This was a Great Work, a piece of art to stand the test of time. And when it exhaled a frightful breath of wicked black flames, clearly inspired by the kidou Kokuryuha in their appearance, the horrible legend intended to make this battle very real for the kitten, and to do so very quickly.

That was all Annika really wanted to accomplish. Well, that and massive deforestation, but mostly the dragon. She so rarely got to perform such an amazing masterpiece of art. It was a lucky day for the kitsune.

Magnum Opus
Overdrive: Magnum Opus
The Great Work: Art, like alchemy, is centered around the creation of a Great Work. By dispelling all current projections of art, expending her Resonance and at the cost of half her remaining reiatsu, Annika can create a work of art that stands the test of time. Magnum Opus projections do not count toward her total number of projections, do not require her concentration, act of their own free will, and are not subject to the rules regarding construct destruction, instead requiring the opponent to truly 'kill' them. Magnum Opus projections must be animate creatures (or Annika's augments to herself, as her ears and tail are manifestations of Magnum Opus) and she cannot communicate with or control them telepathically. They may expend their own reiatsu using a variation of Performance Art at a cost of 10% of the Magnum Opus construct's power once per turn, but if a Magnum Opus completely expends its reiatsu it ceases to exist. Although theoretically possible for more than one Magnum Opera to exist at once, with the exception of Annika's self-augmentation only one can engage any single enemy.

Magnum Opus power: 4042 (Attack this turn: 404 reiatsu)

Adele froze as the beast came towards her. Fear dilated her pupils and turned her irises black. The horrid sound of the dragon bearing down on her was almost as bad as a Hollow.

Almost.

Adele flash stepped backwards and shouted, "Dragon's Breath!" The nekogami spat flames directly into the wyvern's face. Unsheathing her sword, the shinigami brought forth her Shikai once more. "A tiger's silence is louder," the words were uttered softly. Glaring at the beast, Adele ran at it and jumped, sheathing one of her swords, and grabbed hold of a vine. The long, green, rope-like tendril broke and then floated, taking the Mystic with it.

Annika wasn't the only one with the ability to go airborn. Mystics could do it, too. Flying at the horrid dragon, the nekogami brandished her sword angrily. The feline shinigami didn't like dragons much more than wasps. I thought you wanted to enjoy this spar. Look around you.She took a moment to notice the wind rushing against her face, the adrenaline flowing through her veins, her heart hammering its way out of her chest, the roar of the dragon, and she was flying. A laugh burst forth from her lips, this is a great spar!

"Ani-san!" She called out rather jovially, "This is your best creation yet!"
